Formation:
In the late 1970's, the second Hunter found himself working more and more with other heroes to combat the menaces that plagued New York City. With the explosion of new paranormals that happened in the late 70's and early 80's, the idea of banding together with like-minded individuals seemed like a natural. Using his vast resources, Hunter created the team that would become the Avengers.
The Avengers were backed by a special trust fund created by the Maria Kirby Foundation. (Maria Kirby was the mother of Hunter and wife of the original Hunter.) This fund provides the team with all the equipment it requires, provides a stipend to those who need it, and handles all miscellaneous finances. Lane Kirby (Hunter himself) oversaw this fund up until his untimely death. His daughter, Helena, currently monitors the fund.
Hunter handpicked the founding members of his group. They included the Golden Avenger, Black Diamond, Nightingale, Captain Valor, Density, and Warlock. Membership has varied since the group's formation. The Avengers soon became the first hero team since World War II to be officially recognized by the Government. This partnership was something of a curse and a blessing. Recently, the Government revoked the Avengers official status. For a short time, the Guardians were a sister team to the Avengers and were based in Los Angeles. This arrangement proved to be a failure, and the two teams went their separate ways.
Recently, Hunter and several others of the team were killed under mysterious circumstances. Black Diamond has assumed the leadership position and tries to carry on Hunter's dream.
Base of Operations:
The team is based in a mansion located at 5th Avenue and 70th Street, across from Central Park. It was originally the Hamilton Mansion, but was extensively remodeled when ownership was transferred to the Avengers. Jennifer Hamilton, who was happy to see the mansion put to a good use, authorized this transfer. (Jennifer Hamilton was known as Shadow Cat during the 30's and 40's, as related in the Golden Age of Champions. Jennifer had a daughter who was also a paranormal. Going by the name of 'The Cat', Felina Hamilton embarked on a career of burglary. The Cat had a long love/hate relationship with the second Hunter that ended up with the two being married. Their union resulted in Helena Kirby, recently better known as the Huntress.)
The Avengers Mansion is similar in set up to the comic book version. The ground floor holds the dining hall, kitchen, servant's quarters, library, and a public meeting room. Behind the Mansion is an automobile garage. A portion of the driveway is used as a landing pad for the teams Quinnjets.
The second floor of the Mansion is primarily dedicated to members' quarters. The office of the team leader is located on this floor as well.
The Communications Room is located on the third, and top, floor of the Mansion. A Recreation Room, a English Conservatory, and Sun Deck round out the top floor.
The basement of the Avengers Mansion is your typical basement consisting primarily of the laundry area, storage areas, and the pantry.
Located 50' below street level is Sub-Level 1. On this level is the Quinnjet Hanger, the Combat Simulator and general exercise area. The Med Lab is on Sub-Level 1 as well. A hydraulic lift pushes the Quinnjet landing pad up to the surface. A portion of the driveway slides back to make room for the landing pad.
Sub-Level 2, located 150' below the sidewalk, is where the highly secured Main Conference Room is located. Various Labs are on this level as well, including one for Computers and another for Electronics.
The lowest point in the Avengers Mansion is Sub-Level 3, some 300' below street level. A small fusion reactor is located at this level and provides the base with all its power needs.
