The Enchantress is a mage with a wide variety of powers. All of her spells require that she make very specific gestures and speak incantations. Her main spell use is to grant the Enchantress the power of flight, a force field for protection, and the ability to throw bolts of magical energy. The type of spells she can cast is limited only by her imagination. On the down side, her magical force field conducts electricity rather than repelling it.
The Enchantress also possesses several innate senses. Her strong connection to magical energy allows her to sense other sources of magic to some degree. She can sense strong sources of magic, analyze them, and determine their distance. Gwen has a special link to the Sorceress that allows communication between the two, but is limited to a twenty mile range. Lastly, she has an innate sense that allows her to locate Muskateer.
Notes:
Gwen is the second oldest child of Anita and Karl Kingston, the founders of the King Krab line of seafood. Having wealthy parents, Gwen grew up in very comfortable surroundings. She went to the finest schools and traveled the world over. Gwen's older brother, Allen, is a reporter for the World News Network, a 24 hour cable news channel. Monica and Thomas are her younger sister and brother. The Enchantress maintains a townhouse in Manhattan.
The magical powers of the Enchantress are handed down to the eldest female in every other generation. Just when these powers first appeared is lost in the distant past. Gwen inherited the powers from her Grandmother on her sixteenth birthday. Mysteriously, Gwen was far more powerful than her grandmother had been. The reason for this unexplained boost in magical power stems from Gwen having been specifically chosen to carry Tabia's Legacy. Tabia was a powerful sorceress on the magical Earth called Terra Nova. She created a spell that would bequeath her skill in magic to a suitable female, while the warrior skills of her husband Leander would be given to a worthy male.
The previous holders of Tabia's Legacy were slain by the Empress of Darkness and Tabia's Fortress captured. The Legacy was sent out into the world to find two new canidates. Somehow, the Legacy ended up being transfered over to Earth and chose Gwen and Muskateer. While Earth is a magically weak world, Gwen was still sensitive enough to sense Muskateer's presence due to the Legacy.
After graduating high school, Gwen moved to New York City where she joined the Circle to be tutored by the Master. Later the Enchantress was a founding member of the Crusaders, a short-lived and volatile hero team. Leaving the Crusaders the following year, Gwen attended college for a time and continued to study in the Circle before joining the Avengers when Black Diamond re-formed the team.
The Enchantress has forged many friendships during the seven years that she has been a heroine. Close friends include the Sorceress of the Superior Seven, Warlock of the Guardians, and Sargon, late of the Avengers. The Enchantress still has contacts with the Circle and occasionally aids the current students as a mentor.
The Enchantress does not disguise her identity in an obvious manner. By use of subtle illusions, she is able to make it appear as if Gwen and the Enchantress are two separate individuals. However, Muskateer is somehow able to pierce this illusion. A mysterious link exists between the two Avengers, the nature of which neither one completely understands. Gwen seems to be more sensitive to this link than Muskateer. Having been attracted to Muskateer for a long time, the two have started the beginnings of a romantic relationship.
The White Dragon Affair was very troubling to the Enchantress as she feared the Avengers were going to take the same path of destruction that the Crusaders had traveled. The sorceress refused to go on this mission due to these reasons. While the Avengers were seeking retribution against the White Dragon, the Enchantress was summoned to Ryker's Island. Unwittingly, Gwen fell into a trap laid by Lady Darkness and is now her prisoner.
While Lady Darkness prepared Gwen for what she termed as 'The Joining', Muskateer became aware that something was very wrong with the disappearance of the Enchantress via the link they share. With Gwen prepared, the time of the Joining was at hand. Lady Darkness' costume appeared to run off of her body and began to coat the Enhantress as well.
Gwen next found herself on a mindscape generated by the Darkness. It caught Gwen and began to merge with her very being. The Darkness itself is a amoeba-like parasite that coats its hosts to control them. The host becomes the senses for the Darkness, while the Darkness does bestow upon the host some powers of its own. The Darkness merged with Gwen and she appears to be enthralled by her new master.
The Enchantress gained several darkness related powers due to her Joining with the Darkness. In addition, she acquire several magic items from the Shadowhold treasure. With the Darkness firmly in control of the Enchantress, she was dispatched back to Earth with an Ectolian assistant named Mira to pave the way for eventual conquest.
The Enchantress was created by Spectrum. Pictures were drawn by Muskateer.
