Putting the Mage Merlin fiasco behind us, it was time to move on. The Seekers arrive in the city of Gateway that became their base of operations. Many of the Gateway characters reappear multiple times in this series and in the other games as well.

With these posts, you start to see group cliques begin to form. It's a natural occurance whenever you get a good-sized group of characters together. There also seems to be a lot more free-form roleplaying in the D&D games than in the Champions. Not sure why that is, but it just seems to be the way of things.

The Frontier #5

The battle with the bandits, and the shouting, is over. Using tools provided by Trevor, several graves are dug. (Several members of the caravan died in the attack before the party arrived.) In a quiet ceremony, Merlin and their bodies are laid to rest.

Upon hearing Finrod's plea for the spellbook, Cereld decides to allow him to keep it.

That task complete, those with healing skills tend to the party's and caravaners' wounds.

Flint, Dalliance and Finrod find the treasure on the bandits and the cleric. Finrod examines the box, searching for a method to open it. He plays with it for many hours, but cannot open it.

Cereld examines the remains of the Cleric of Hextor for himself. He produces a flask of Holy Water and pours a few drops on the evil cleric's Holy Symbol. The Holy Water acts as acid and quickly destroys the symbol.

Trevor suggests that the caravan move on, just in case of another attack. After an additional two hours of travel, the train puts up for the night. Camp is made next to a stream and dinner is served.

"You are all more than welcome to share in our meal," Trevor says. "I fear that a financial reward is out of my hands. This caravan is in the employ of the Crown. However, I am sure that General Logan will give you a reward on your arrival at Gateway."

The night passes without incident. Next morning, Dalliance memorizes Detect Magic. She casts her spell on the items found. She discovers that the cleric's armor, shield, flail, as well as the box are all magical.

That evening, while around the campfire, Trevor speaks of Gateway

"As you know, Gateway is the home base in the expansion into the Old Keln Empire. The city was reclaimed two years ago. A military force battled a goblin clan over the city. Since then, much remodeling has occurred. The city has been totally fortified from its rundown state."

"As adventurers for the Crown, you'll be given a mansion to use as quarters. Now, don't let the sound of that fool you. The mansions in Gateway date back to the Keln occupation. The walls and roof have been repaired, but you'll be lucky to have furniture."

The rest of the trip passes without event. During the afternoon of the fifth day, you arrive at the City of Gateway. Gateway is situated on a cliff overlooking the lands of the Frontier. The cliff averages only fifty feet in height. Roads going north and south lead from Gateway down the cliff face. The city itself is walled. As Trevor suggested, the wall is a mixture of old and new construction.

The party's account will have 1300 gp in it. 1100 for the party and 200 as a reward for driving the bandits off. Prices are as per the Players Handbook, but not every item may be available. You might wish to discuss what items to buy.

Then there's the distribution of the magic items found and the mysterious box.

Also, for you spellcasters, please list your current memorized spells. All the party has healed during the uneventful journey with the caravan.

"I do not have any need of equipment save for provisions for our journey." as for the magic items I am too short to wear the armor and don't have prof. in flail and I have both hands full so I can't use the shield. Perhaps one of the magic users has identify to use in he box?"

Upon entrance to the city Dar will immediately seek out a bowyer and replace his shortbow with a fine longbow. When he returns to the company of the other party members he will first look to Cereld and say...."Well we are here! Now what??"

With that Dar will sit back and relax waiting for a response or actions by others. At the first opportunity Dar will memorize 2 CLW's and 1 Magical Stone

I will purchase a longbow, 24 sheath arrows, 12 flight arrows, a quiver, and small saddlebags. I will also visit the Mages' Guild and Fighters' Guild.

Regarding the priest's things, perhaps we should take them to the Mages' Guild and have them examined. Unless Finrod has Detect Evil. We don't need any cursed items....

In any case, alas, I am also too small to use the armor, and the shield would interfere with casting. Perhaps another of the group could use them.

I will memorize Magic Missile as my current spell, as soon as possible.

I have busied myself over the items we found, and as far as I can tell, none of them are cursed. The Box is a Box of Holding, but I haven't yet found the command word to open it.

My suggestions for the split:

Armor: Stephanie- she fought well and bravely against the Ogre bodyguards, and her AC could stand the improvement.

Shield: Ti-cat or Validar-although Ti-cat has both lower hit points and a worse AC, Validar could easily argue that he did the most damage to the Cleric, so...

Flail: Anyone proficient with one? It is a very good weapon, but alas, my elven heritage encourages me to use bow and longsword. :) If no one is proficient with one I suggest Cereld be given it to use and he could begin studying it.

The box: Whoever gets it will either have to pay to get a more complete analysis than my IDENTIFY could reveal, or spend the time figuring it out (and maybe never succeeding). I would like this item for myself, as it has aroused my curiosity, and also, if I can get it to work, is ideal to my preference to travel light. Of course, if I get it to work, and it turns out to be big enough for a lot of stuff, the whole party would be welcome to place things in it...

Now, about the IDENTIFY...that cost me a 100GP gem out of my own pocket. If the party could pay me to replace it I would be most grateful.

As to shopping, I just need 75 gold for a horse, and 10 GP for personal equipment. The other 15 Gold can go into the party kitty for such tings as lanterns for the humans. Also, if whoever gets the magic shield could pass their old one along to me, it occurs to me that while traveling a horse, it would behoove me (pun intended) to use a shield.

When we select rooms at the 'mansion' I will try to get one next to Stephanie's. :) Also, I think the elves should be spread evenly throughout the house, because our light sleep and keen senses make us more likely to detect intruders. It might not be a bad Idea to mount a guard at night. With this many people, it would only take 1/2 hour apiece.

My default spell will be sleep whenever I do not specifically state otherwise. Since Merlin is gone, I will need to be carrying an offensive spell instead of an Util. ('till 2nd lvl, that is)

(Hiding a grin behind a serious expression) "At this point, I feel the armor and weapons should be divided according to need. As to the box, I have no desire to own it: Finrod is welcome. As for the 100gp gem, Finrod, we should recompense you for identifying something YOU want? I bow to the decision of Cereld on this matter." This is not personal, Fin, just cynical...

'My thanks for your suggestion about the armor, Finrod. But I'll leave that decision to Cereld.'

Upon entering the city, Steph will look around. Looks like this is going to be a fun place. It's so big...

'Hey, wait up Dar! I'm interested in gettin' a bow, too. I've you're not busy, perhaps you can help me pick one out. I'm not really sure I can pick out a good one.'

Once Cereld has meet with the city leaders and we are shown to our mansion, I'll wander the building.

'Wow... I've never seen a place like this... Never had anything like this at home...'

Guess I'll have to find the fighters guild and train.

'Now what are we gonna do, Cereld?'

"Excuse me, Cereld, but I must respectfully request that I may find myself a safe haven outside the fortress; it is not the company but rather the environment that puts me ill at ease. As to possessions, all I request is a good riding horse and some provisions for both the horse and myself. I need/desire nothing else. I will await your decision and then be on my way. I will tell you how to contact me as soon as I have found a proper place. I feel that Obad-Hai will be with me while I am living on the land, so you need not worry about my safety."

"Cereld," says Ti-Cat when he sees him alone, "I'll not ask you for much in the way of funds.

"If you see fit to give me the shield we've taken, I'll accept gladly. But Validar fought well, and sure he is an honorable man. I'll not begrudge him it.

"I'd like gold to buy splint mail, if I may, and the makings of some good arrows... nobody's arrows fly like mine," he explains, stroking the striped cat fur on his shoulders.

"Oh... and perhaps a few coppers... for flowers?" he asks, with a nervous little smile.

"Well Raeden you are more than welcome to stay with us, but if that is your wish, so be it. I would ask that you wait however until we find out how long we will be here though.

As to the division of the magic items, I feel that the armor should go to Ti-Cat. His armor could use more improvement than anyone else in the party, and as he is good with that bow of his, he will be less likely to use the shield.

As to the box, Finrod it is yours. I think you should also get the money you need to have it opened from the party as what is inside may be helpful or harmful to the party and we should know about it now instead of when you yourself can afford it. I would like to be there when it is opened however, as this did belong to a cleric of my enemy. As to replacing your gem, I think that should come out of party funds for the same reason as I mentioned giving you the money for opening the box. We may need your spell again and it would be a shame if you weren't able to cast it because you didn't have the money.

As to the shield, (Cereld picks up the shield and walks over to Validar) I would like you to have this Validar as a peace offering. Words were said by the both of us in a stressful time, that I know weren't completely meant. Although I must ask that you curve your impetuousness from now on, I hope that there are no hard feelings between us. (At that Cereld hands Validar the shield and holds his hand out for his.)

Now since no one can use this flail, and no one has said that they wish it, if there are no objections I will keep it for myself, as it seems to be a very interesting weapon. Since we have had first choice of magic, the rest will get first choice when we find some more.

As to money, I think that all the money we found be divided by all in the party, including the two new comers. I do think that we should keep the pay that we are getting and the reward in a group fund for now at least so that all may benefit from it. This fund can be used for such things like opening the box and getting us all horses as well as replacing any broken weapons and arrows. These things will benefit us all in the long run, and should be paid for by the group. If there are any objections to this however I will reconsider it.

Now I have to go check in with General Logan and get us all squared away. I ask that Validar and Sir Radagast accompany me in this endeavor as to lend me their wisdom. If there is nothing immediate that the General wishes us to do, I would like to remain here a week for us to settle in and get all that needs to be done, done before we leave. Agreed?"

Thanks, Cereld, and all of you. What you say is quite true, Cereld, about opening the box, and getting it useable, but I feared to appear greedy, and was quite willing to tote around a useless box for however long it took to save the money or figure it out on my own. I am sure that Dalliance merely spoke everyone's first thoughts when she said that just getting an item should make me happy and I should shut up and take what was given without asking more. Let me know when you are free to go to the Mages guild with me, I need to check in there anyway.

In the meantime, yes, Stephanie, I would be most honored to aid you in picking out a bow, though I am sure Dar would not allow you to be cheated if he were around. I'll also go with you to the Fighter's guild, as that is another place I have to touch base with, then arrange to train in my...er...Scout skills! Yeah, that's it! Scout skills, so that I may continue to better serve the party in the...er...More delicate areas of operations. :)

Since I am sure that Validar will not wish to give up the shield he has carried for so long to a mere common Mercenary, especially considering it is blazoned with his family crest, I withdraw the request that whoever gets the magic one pass his old one along. I can wait 'till we gather some loot to get that shield benefit. I wouldn't be using it very often anyway.

Dar, Steph, ready to go?

GM Notes:

The party can add money to the expense account also. It works similar to a bank account. Thus, including the currency from the bandit encounter, the party has a grand total of: 1327 gp, 40 sp, 3 ep, 30 cp

According to my notes, only 5 of you have horses. Six horses will cost you 450 gp. That does not include any riding gear.

A Knock spell to open the box will cost 200 gp.

To purchase everything mentioned thus far will lower the party's account to: 439 gp, 3 ep, 17 sp, 30 cp

I should also mention that Arafel and Ti-Cat both have the bowyer/fletcher proficiency. In one week, a bowyer can make a shortbow, a longbow, or 7d6 arrows. The raw materials for these items is 1/10th the cost of the finished product.

Well! I guess that solves our archery problem. 22.5 gold is much easier on the account than 225. :)

Assuming, of course, the bowyers are willing. Can you guys whip off a powerful longbow and 7d6 arrows, or would you rather carouse the week away?

:)

Dumb question.

Raeden looks directly at Cereld after hearing his words (Cereld can see the great pain in Raeden's eyes), "Cereld, I understand but I must leave now! I will meet you at the main gate this evening and you may inform me as to how long we will be staying. I will meet you in the same manner every night of our stay here, until I have trained my "messenger". I will fill you in when the messenger is ready. Raeden will then hurry off in the direction of the gate by way of several of the local stores to purchase the necessary provisions and his "messenger".

The allocations of items and funds are fine with me. Cereld's reasons for paying Finrod's costs out of party funds are quite reasonable.

"Fin, just be careful when the box is opened; the previous owner was a person of great evil."

"Ti-cat, if you think you will have the time over the next few weeks, I would be happy to pay you to make me a longbow. I'd much rather have one made by a friend than a stranger. And I'd also prefer to give my money to you than an unknown armorer. I can purchase arrows to start with, to avoid tying up too much of your free time."

If Ti-cat agrees, I will still visit a few armorers' shops, to browse the edged weapons. Also, as stated, I will visit the Fighters and Mages Guilds, and do some general sightseeing. Anyone who wants to accompany me is welcome.

"Raeden, let me know if there's anything I can pick up for you in the city."

Looking first to Steph then Finrod, Dar stands up briskly and readies his meager possessions in preparation for the venture into the city. Before he goes Dar will ask the party's bowyers to fashion a longbow for him as well noting that he feels a shortbow to be inadequate. If anyone decides to shop for mounts Dar will gladly volunteer his help in finding the choicest horses, as he is adept at that through his training and empathy with animals.

Validar will take the shield and the hand offered to him by Cereld.

"I do not hold grudges, friend Cereld. We simply had a difference of opinion and the matter is long since ended. However, I will gladly accept this shield taken in battle from our enemy." It is his first true momento of war.

"You are correct, Finrod. I have NO intention of giving up the shield that I have carried and not only because it bears my coat of arms. I fully intend to keep my regular shield in use. I have trained with it and it is like a part of me. To part with it, at this time, would not be a wise move, I feel."

"Arafel, you are more than welcome to continue to ride with me, if you so desire. Just remember our arrangement..." Validar smiles in return. The two had done some chatting during their ride and Validar found himself intrigued by the ranger. She was a bit rough around the edges to be sure, but those emerald eyes were truly enchanting.

Validar will pay a visit to a suitable trainer to take advantage of the experience accrued to this point. Also, he will spend his free time looking into the fashioning of a suit of full plate armor, either in exchange for the magical shield, or sell it to an interested party and purchase the armor. I will however also purchase a replica of the shield that belonged to that soulless slug, and have it emblazoned in the same manner as a momento of sorts.

Ti-Cat approaches Dalliance. His face reddens as he says, "I would be pleased to make a longbow for you. I cannot accept the money of a person who may save my life, or her own, one-day with my handiwork. If you will pay for the raw materials, I will pick them out myself and make for you the best bow of which I am able."

Later, he speaks to Finrod. The message is much the same, save that he will begin on Finrod's bow as soon as he has finished Dalliance's.

With money supplied by the party members, Ti-Cat will go out to find or buy the raw materials. First he will make a longbow for Dalliance, then for Finrod. Should he have time after that, he will make arrows for both of them and for himself. With any spare time (if there is any) each day, he will practice his own archery.

Since Ti will not take payment, I will think long on a gift for him to return his friendship.
