The Frontier #28 Cautiously, Cereld, Finrod, Finius, Stephanie, Araduin, Dantar, Dalliance and Arafel enter the tower. The building creaks and moans as they enter, but what remains seems to be sturdy enough. As you travel along, it becomes apparent that the tower has taken some fire damage. Most of the damage appears to have been made by the creature. The first floor of the tower is totally in ruins. All the rooms have been previously searched and trashed. Nothing remains intact. Ceilings have collapsed in several areas. Only the thieves have the skills to explore the second floor of the tower. Again, not much remains. Having nowhere else to turn, the explorers proceed downstairs into the basement of the tower. The basement is in better shape than the tower above it, but not much better. The whole basement is a mage's workroom. Workbenches and bookcases fill the room. Almost all of the items have been destroyed. The bookcases have been ransacked. Most of the books burned by indication of a large pile of ashes in the far corner of the room. Broken glass from smashed beakers covers the floor. There are footprints down here. Arafel believes them to be Wendy's. A few scraps of paper are found. They appear to be torn pages from a diary. They read: '...uncontrollable. Too late I realize my folly. My creation nearly destroyed me. I must stop it.' 'A truly great prize... if the process works. All indications that it will...' 'I have assembled almost all the parts. Only the giant remains.' 'Power is in my grasp. The creature shall serve me well. Woe to those who oppose me...' Nothing else of interest is found. Having searched the tower, the Seekers continue on the trail of the Mountain Monster. Approximately one hour later, the trail leads into a abandoned mine. Many tracks are around, including those of Wendy. The fresh tracks all lead into the mine. |

GM Notes: Are you ready to enter the lair of the Mountain Monster? What is the Mountain Monster? Heh-heh... Cereld, the following occurs when you grasp the battleaxe: Suddenly, a vision appears before. You can see a mighty warrior bathed in a wondrous light before you. It is too bright to clearly see him. 'Hail, my son. Use this tool to further the Cause. This tool shall increase your might when in battle against the Foe. When raised to the sky and my prayer is recited, thy comrades shall receive my Blessing. Use this tool wisely, my son.' The vision then fades. In your mind you know that the Blessing spoken of can be done 3 times a day. In addition, half of your valuables need to be tithed to remain in possession of this tool. Now what?

Validar Outside with Dar: "My uncle had a weapon similar to that one, Dar Thaltus. I have learned that sometimes enchanted blades will give a clue to their powers through various engravings or markings on the blade. My uncle's blade was similar but the color was different. I was very young before that blade was destroyed, but I will never forget the sapphire-like shine to its blade. It was destroyed in killing the dragon, Azure. Mayhap you also have a dragon-slayer!" Validar was a rapt learner when it came to legends told by his father's scribe, Lars Belbin. He and Lars daughter, Lara, would often sit for hours and listen to the old man's tales. He also learned much about the use of magick on the battlefield. Lars was much more than a mere scribe and a trusted member of the Baron's staff.

Stephanie 'I don't like the sound of those pages... What did he do here?' Steph looks around, searching for an answer but none appears. Later, at mine opening. 'It appears the answers to our questions lie within... Shall we proceed?'

Dantar I don't like the idea of chasing some 'mountain monster' into his home ground. I feel like this is very bad and we should try to get the 'monster' out here on our terms! Say sending a few of you down there to lure it out and then spring a trap to bring it down? Send the fighters in after it and when it comes out have the thieves (including me) backstab it and the M-Us and clerics blast it from a safe distance and let the fighters finish hacking it to bits! A nice plan I would say!

Araduin "It may not be necessary to place such a grave danger upon the warriors. If we merely wait in ambush, I'd say we had a good chance of encountering the beast. That way, in addition to the backstabbing and spells, those fighters who are skilled at such will have the opportunity to use missile weapons against it. Also, should Wendy emerge, we will have the chance to capture her and find out her part in this matter.

Finrod I think any plan to have a thief try to backstab a creature of unknown body type, structure and origin, is doomed from the start to result in some dead thieves. They would serve much better in case of armed conflict with this vile creation as missileers and as hand-to-hand men, or, in the case of some of us, as spell-casters. The plan to send fighters clanking in there to draw it out is likewise more likely to produce high-protein food for the monster than the desired results. Perhaps the best I have heard so far is just to wait out here until it comes out. That, however presumes that: 1) There is no other way in or out through which the creature might move at will while we sat here for days watching an empty hole. 2) Wendy is guilty of whatever nebulous charge we might feel she deserves, and should be left in there to fend for herself. 3) Wendy is incapable of controlling the beast herself, and using precious time while we sit here, and she learns the fine points of bending it to her whims. I do not like the paths both explored and unexplored that those assumptions lead us down. Therefore, here is my suggested improvement to the plan: We lay here in ambush in case the creature, Wendy, or both emerge. We send a small party of thieves in to explore, gather info, RETURN, and REPORT, so that we can then make an informed decision on what to do further. This seems to cover all the bases as safely and thoroughly as possible. What say you all? Shall we do it?

Arathron I greatly agree with Finrod's plan. It seems to be the most likely to work. so far. This Wendy must not be liked, eh?

Dar Thaltus Dar Thaltus eyes widen at Val's comment. "A dragon slayer eh?! My that would be a prize indeed!!" Dar will continue scrutinizing the blade while awaiting the return of the rest of the party. He will pay particular attention to any markings or runes around the base of the blade....especially near the hilt and quillons. Occasionally Dar will pause and glance in the direction the other group took....wondering how much success they are having in their endeavor. He feels a bit left out....knowing his scouting skills could be put to better use than sitting around staring at his new blade...........

Cereld "Finrod your plan is well thought out and quite sound. I too am a little wary of going charging into this situation without knowing a little more information. There are too many variables here. What exactly is this mountain monster? I think it is safe to reason that it was created in the tower, but we still have no idea what we are fighting. And how exactly does Wendy fit into all of this. I am beginning to agree more and more with Validar about Wendy's guilt in misleading us. It seems quite obvious that she entered this mine willingly and not as some prisoner. No I think it for the best if we wait out here in ambush while our stealthier side tries to gain us a little more information. This way when they return, we will know better how to proceed in this matter."
