The Frontier #34 At last, the Seekers depart Whispering Hollow. Several of the inhabitants have joined their ranks, swelling the Seekers' numbers to over a dozen. Several new adventurers arrive at virtually the last second. The trip to the trail made by the goblins takes two days. The group arrives in the late afternoon. No hazards are encountered along the way. The goblin trail is a wide track of trampled forest made by the passing of the goblin army a few weeks back. The Seekers encountered this trail en route to Whispering Hollow. Suddenly, everyone's attention is attracted to screeching coming from the sky. A pride of griffons are circling overhead. Having smelled the party's mounts, they are preparing to attack in a feeding frenzy.... |

| GM Notes: You'll have 1 round to prepare for the incoming Griffons. I need the spells lists for Eagle and Demonslayer ASAP! Fin, what kind of arrangements are you going to have in taking Wendy back to Gateway? I'm assuming that you're having guards during the night. I would appreciate if you could tell what kind of rotation you have. With all the new players, here is an updated party listing. A couple of the new players did not make the post deadline and are included below.
House Rules: The following are rules and variations in use in this game: Encumbrance is used. I do NOT require Spell Components I use individual initiative rolls for the Seekers and Group Initiative for like groups of monsters. Weapon speed figures into to Initiative and Magical Weapons reduce Weapon Speed. I use the Exceeding Level Limits option on Demi-Humans. Mages do not automatically gain new spells when they gain a level. There should be enough spells on hand, from captured spell books and scrolls, to get a descent selection. Characters advance and train on the 'Advance now, Train Later' method. The Crown supplies free training to the Seekers back in Gateway. I allow characters to advance in levels automatically, but they still must make up the training at a later date. Training takes 1 week per level gained. Thus, once the party is safely back in Gateway, some players will have to spend as many as four weeks in make-up training. New players won't really be affected by this, since they can be trained by the older players of the same class. Hovering at Death's door is used. Weapon breakage: In my off-line game, we devised an easy system to check for weapon breakage. Without really thinking about it, I've used it in this game. Whenever a natural 1 is rolled on an attack roll, I immediately re-roll the dice. If a 2nd 1 comes up, the weapon in question has broken. This does not occur very often, but just enough to add spice to the game. It also seems to always happen at the wrong time... And lastly about magic items: Wands, Staffs and Rods all require command words. More often than not, the words are written on the object, but Read Magic is needed to comprehend them. Magical swords DO NOT emit light. Also, I do not label magic items. That is, if you find some magic items, I do not reveal exactly what they are up front. 'The sword is magical, the chain is magical, etc.' No pluses are ever given. My feeling is that the player really has no way of knowing which sword is +1 and which is +2. They can determine which is stronger, but no pluses will be given. The nature of other items can eventually be determined. For example, Araduin has a Ring of Protection. Of course he doesn't know what the plus is! When the nature of an item is determined, I usually tell what the item is. Like in the example above. |

Present Day Comments: In hindsight, some of my house rules changed over the years, even during the time on Q! The weapon breakage rule dates back to Muskateer and my live games in the days before Q. Still use it to this very day! |

Present Day Comments: This was that paladin who thought he was a ranger mentioned in the forum during the discussions about Raeden. In hindsight, he seemed to play his character for laughs, which didn't fit particularly well since this was a fairly serious game. What humor there was came about from character interaction and the situation, not slapstick. |

| Finrod Before leaving town, arrangements will be made for traveling with Wendy. She will be bound gently but firmly at the wrists. I will carefully explain that her 'sickness' causes her to have 'fits', and that we do not wish her to hurt herself. Because of these 'fits', she cannot ride alone, she might fall off... she will have to ride in front of Fin. (Sorry, Steph, it's the best I could come up with.) We are both pretty light, and carry little equipment outside of the chest, so the horse should have little difficulty in carrying us. When the griffins circle to begin their attack, Wendy and I will dismount, and Wendy will be told to hold and calm the horse while I defend the three of us. This should take up most of that initial round. While all this is going on, I shall be looking for two trees, at about the proper distance apart to anchor a WEB spell. When the Creatures swoop to attack, I shall attempt to foul as many as possible in my WEB. This should (I hope) bring one or more to the ground, and befoul their wings enough to keep them there. I have no illusions that they will be stuck IN the web for more than a round or two, but once on their wings, it should keep them from taking off for quite a while. On round two, I plan; if possible to use COLOR SPRAY to further discomfit the closest one or two of the beasts, then will wade in to hand-to-talon combat with them, using shortsword and dagger. "DAMN the loss of my bow--I hate not being able to attack at a distance and at these beasts while they are flying! I can only hope I can succeed in bringing a couple down where I can de-claw them, and keep them there!" "Keep that Gelding quiet, now Wendy! It's an important job, and he'll be wanting to break and run from these things!" **************************************** Welcome to the Party, Newcomers! I am Finrod, and I provide the baser side of of our group with inspirational leadership. I am a charming elf of average build and height, with blue eyes and blond hair, dressed in black garments of fine make when you first meet me in town. Later, when we are ready for the road, I am dressed in fine quality studded leather armor, but whenever the threat factor is low, I prefer to go (apparently) unarmored, though always armed. I keep the party's captured spell-books safe in a locked chest of fine manufacture, but anytime you Magic-using sorts desire to copy a spell, let me know. We have an 'open book policy' here, and fully share our books with each other. If any of you fledgling fighters need training, I'm glad to help, but Steph is better. But don't get any Ideas--She's way to rough for any of you. :) |

| Bernice Bernice follows Araduin around pestering him with questions. 'How did you guys get the name Seekers? Funny name Seekers. what are you Seeking? You've run into these goblins before? Nasty bunch, huh? Where's this army from? Who are they fighting? Where is this Gateway? Big town, huh? Always wanted to see a city? Is it a CITY? Boy, all those stores...and rich people just walking the streets, ummmm.' After a pause 'Ha ha ha, just kidding.' and she smiles a big smile showing several crooked teeth. When she sees the Griffons, Bernice will let out a short scream and then clamp her hand over her mouth. Muttering to herself, 'Gosh they're big and pretty scarey too! Be brave...be brave.' She tumbles off her horse and runs to the nearest cover. From there she'll attempt to stop shaking and use her sling. Trembling in the shadows, Bernice |

| Stephanie 'You misunderstood what I spoke of early, Dar. I wish to near the head of the party, not to lead it on the return trip. Your superior skills leave no doubt who shall lead us on this journey. I merely wished to near the front so that I could quickly engage an enemy who dared to attack us.' I'm somewhat amused at Fin's handling of the foul mage. 'I'm beginning to suspect that you have feelings towards the wench, Fin. The way you look after her and ride with her and all. She is a devious one, more devious then you... Yes, that is the root of all this isn't it! Why, Fin, I believe you might have found the perfect woman!' :) 'I may be rough, Fin... Perhaps too rough even for you. Is that correct, little friend?' With a huge smile on her face, Steph draws up to her full height, standing almost a full foot over Finrod. When the 'big turkeys' attack, looks like you shall fit in quite well, friend Blod, I shall guide Thunder to a place of safety. No overgrown bird is going to eat my horse! 'Be gone foul creatures! Les you taste the bit of Lightning!' Drawing my magic sword, I'll attack the nearest monster. |

| Araduin "Really, Bernice, we must do something about your shyness... As to our name, well, when we find it, we'll know. But really, I think each of us here seeks something, otherwise we would not be here. I personally seek knowledge, and to do what good I can with the knowledge I gain. Those vermin goblins we follow are controlled by the evil religion, whose local control we have only just broken. We have met them before, or at least some of their ilk. They took one of our party captive, and we have not seen him since. There is a large band on it's way to Gateway, and if they should surprise that outpost, then they may well overthrow it and break out into the lands beyond, for Gateway, as it's name implies, guards the passage between the peaceful lands beyond, and the remains of the evil which used to rule the lands in which we now travel." When the griffons are spotted, I'll throw my Magic Missile at the nearest, and then ready my quarterstaff. I shall remain mounted, and defend my mount as best I can from the winged beasts. Araduin is an averaged sized, attractive Elven male. His clothes are normal fare, all in greens and browns. A headband holds his long raven hair back from his green eyes. He travels lightly, the quarterstaff his only apparent weapon, the rest of his gear sitting into his backpack. |

| Cereld "Welcome new Seekers, my name is Cereld, cleric of Heironeous, and leader of this band. (Sorry I could not great you last post, but time just ran out on me.) You are all more than welcome to join us in our adventures. Eagle, it is a pleasure to have someone else in our band who teaches the ways of our just lord, Heironeous. Perhaps later we could get together and discuss the blessings that he has bestowed on each of us. Bernie, your sense of humor is most welcome in this party, especially now. We have had many a tragedy lately, and have lost a few of our friends, and your cheery spirit is a well-needed relief. As is also your music, Kaan. I look forward to a time when you can play for us. Blod, Demonslayer, Telinos your fighting arms are more than needed especially in the times that quickly approach us with the upcoming battle with the goblins and a special mission that we have next summer. Rathin, I expect that you will add that extra bit of stealth that any well-balanced band of adventures could use. And last but not least Kamreill. I welcome your guidance and wisdom in the coming journeys. May our new found alliance be full of adventure and reward, and serve the greater good of Heironeous." A brief description of Cereld is that of a somewhat plump (not overweight, but could easily get there) human male who is about 5'7" tall, with black hair and a white complexion. He is wearing plate armor to which he proudly displays the holy symbol of Heironeous on the outside. He carries an impressive looking battle-axe which also bears this symbol. When Cereld talks he usually speaks rather loud, almost on the verge of shouting, and even if he is reminded of this, he will quiet down for a few seconds and then his excitement will get the best of him. Cereld is a very jovial man, who is very good tempered and humored, but he also is very passionate about the things he believes in. When we spot the griffons preparing to descend upon us, Cereld raises his Battle Axe in the air. "Heironeous hear the plea of your humble servant and grant your blessing on this band that is about to fight against that oncoming beasts. Ready Seekers, at them foul flying beasts. Drive them quickly off so we can continue on our quest." Last thing is that I think I should set some sort of guard for when we sleep. Each shift will be for two hours each. 1st - Arathron, Eagle, Kaan 2nd - Araduin, Bernie, Kamreill 3rd - Cereld, Demonslayer 4th - Rathin, Stephanie, Dar 5th - Blod, Finrod, Telinos If anyone would like to change shifts for whatever reason, just let me know. Also I will warn everyone anytime we set up camp for the night. Every night I will cast Wyvern Watch on the area, so do not leave it for any reason. |

I ask the highest mage available to show me some tricks, so I can cast spells on 2nd level. I also offer to cook for the group. As the griffons get closer, but not quite into melee range Dar will caste his Flame Blade and use it in his left hand, giving him two swords to wreak havoc with. He then quickly heads away from the party in an attempt to draw some of the flying beasts away from the newer and/or more vulnerable party members. (Which includes the horses). If things go very badly for the party in the opening rounds of combat Dar will resort to using his Obscurement spell to lay a covering haze over the largest group of needy members.
