Spectrum's Comments: The Company has returned to Karn's Keep and Argent has vanished. The search now begins.
Sword of Doom #57
The Company attempts to discover what happened to Argent. Her trail leads to the second mage tower, the one that appears to be sealed against all normal entry.
Selarin and Perrel attempt to climb the side of the tower. The climb is harrowing and both nearly fall off several times, but the somehow make it to the tower's windows.
Using the hilt of his sabre, Perrel attempts to shatter the glass. He swings but does not shatter the glass. In fact, the glass sounded metallic when it was hit!
Movement and sound draws the climbers attention. Looking up, you see a window on the top level of the tower open. You can see Argent standing there. She steps up to the window sill and jumps out!
However, she does not fall. Her body slowly floats to the ground. Argent lands softly, but does not rise from the ground.
Approaching closer, you can see that she is unconscious.
SUBJ: Perrel... FROM: GM Kill 08/31/91 S#: 846361
I smile at Schar, and give her a soft kiss, while feeling happy over her concern for me.
"Don't worry, I'll be careful." I say while looking her in the eyes. "But, we don't really have too many other options."
With that Selarin and I start up the side, and I'm surprised at the problems we encounter as we climb, and am much relieved when we reach the window.
But, my relief quickly fades as the window refuses to break, and I curse softly under my breath.
Then, I see Argent, and I gasp loudly as she starts towards the ground, but then sigh with relief when I see that she's floating down.
I realize that she'll be all right, with Schar and the others down there to help her, and seeing the open window, I realize this might be our chance.
I motion to Selarin, and point to the window Argent opened.
"Tymora gave us our chance, let's take it!" I say to him, while starting up the wall towards the window.
SUBJ: Crandor FROM: GM Falcon 09/01/91 S#: 816973
Crandor runs to Argent, only to find her unconscious.
"MEDIC!", Crandor roars. He runs a cursory examination over her body to try and determine what ko'ed her (bruise marks, wounds, and the like).
If any are found, our young ranger will start climbing, using the rope as rappel, hissing something about attacking unarmed civilians. (No, he hasn't learned his lesson yet ;))
If not, he'll be content to watch Perrel and Selarin climb.
SUBJ: GM Notes: FROM: GM Mad 09/01/91 S#: 791316
For those who watched from the ground, it was clear that the climbers did not come into contact with Argent. The window she leaped out of was 60 feet further up the tower then the window the climbers were at.
Also, Raith departed with the others.
That leaves us with:
Argent
Crandor
Eliza
Gathis(?)
Mastiff
Omni
Perrel
Schar
Selarin

SUBJ: Omni FROM: Omni Tuens 09/02/91 S#: 821668
When Omni sees Argent being lowered, he curses quietly, but stands back to let the clerics do their job. Once this is done, he shouts up to the climbing duo.
"Selarin! Perrel! Do what you have to do to get in there! Then either lower the rest of us that rope, or find some other way to get us in!"
Omni then stands, looking intently upward, and fingering his ring restlessly. Finally, he comments to no one in particular:
"We're finding out what's in there, if we have to bring down the entire tower to do it."
SUBJ: Crandor... FROM: GM Falcon 09/02/91 S#: 843860
"Bring down the entire tower?" Crandor looks at Omni humorously, and strings his bow teasingly: "Now that's an interesting idea." He takes aim at the lower half of the building before relaxing his grip.

The woman on the ground suddenly opens her eyes and stands. 'Still groggy. Did not expect the headache. I must rest.'
That said, I turn towards my quarters in the other tower. 'Prepare your band of adventurers, Omni. We go for the next piece of the sword in the morning. I must rest and study my spells. Before long the sword will be in my-- er- our grasp.'
Argent then walks off.....

As argent floats down to the ground, Gathis peers up at the window looking for a sign of life(hostile I mean)If something appears, he yells, "surrender or feel the wrath of great magic!"(not to mention a bunch of arrows :) A little over boast in my situation, but hey, does he know?"
SUBJ: GM Notes FROM: GM Mad 09/03/91 S#: 512878
Perrel and Selarin continue to climb. They reach the upper level where Argent jumped off of. Mysteriously, the window has shut itself. Again the window sound metallic when hit with the sabre.
SUBJ: Schar FROM: Schar 09/03/91 S#: 787318
Greatly concerned over this fool stunt, I silently watch as Perrel and Selarin climb.
When Argent falls out of the upper window I scream loudly! My heart starts beating again when I see that her fall is very slow.
Once on the ground, I respond to Crandor's call for aid. I quickly examine her, but can find no visible wounds.
I gasp once more when she suddenly sits up, speaks and the walks off.
"Omni, something is not right with her!"
Forgetting about the mage's strange behavior for a moment, I look up at the tower. Finding that Perrel cannot get in, I shout up once more.
"Come down from there before you hurt yourself!!" ;D
SUBJ: Eliza FROM: Tora 09/03/91 S#: 825722
I stand and watch our two climbers climb the tower. I am surprised when Argent jumps from the window and floats on down. When Argent is declared unconscious, my brain starts aching. 'How can an unconscious person jump from a window? How did Argent get into the tower? How does Omni propose we tear down the tower?'
When Argent wakes and speaks, things just aren't right. 'What is the "my...our hands" bit about the sword? Argent wasn't like that before the tower. What happened in the tower? Who is this person pretending to be Argent? How is Omni going to get us into the tower to solve this puzzle?'
All the time these thoughts are running, Eliza stands off to the side with a puzzled look. When Argent walks off, Eliza looks to Omni then follows Argent. Battle senses on the alert but no weapon drawn. I will stand personal guard over Argent at all times.
SUBJ: Perrel... FROM: GM Kill 09/03/91 S#: 501468
I frown when we find the window shut, and begin to think that maybe things aren't quite right in this tower.
I hang there thinking, trying to figure a way to break into the tower.
An idea occurs to me, and I motion for Selarin to go on down, and as he starts down, I head the opposite direction, climbing up towards the top of the tower.
"No point in both of us getting killed." I whisper softly to myself, as I make the climb.
Once I reach the top, I stand there looking down at the party and resting for a few moments, taking an opportunity to wave at Schar as I do, and then blowing her a kiss.
After that, I look around the top of the tower, looking for hatches into the tower, or anything else that gets my attention.
If I do find a hatch, I examine it closely before I do anything else.
SUBJ: Omni FROM: Omni Tuens 09/04/91 S#: 1327
The fighter stands in stunned silence as Argent rises, makes a quite uncharacteristic pronouncement, and walks off. Finally recovering from his astonishment, he quickly decides to set a plan in motion.
"No...something is definitely wrong... Schar... does your God grant you any powers which may aid us in determining what is happening with her? If so, ask that they be granted, immediately. The rest of you... find a way in that tower. I don't care how, or what it takes... just do it. I'm going after Argent, before she does something we'll ALL regret."
Omni then sets off after the mage, approaching cautiously and giving her a chance to speak before he does.
"Argent...do you feel okay?"
SUBJ: Argent FROM: Enchantres 09/04/91 S#: 481323
I note woman following me and then this hulking man asks me if I'm okay. 'I'm tired. I need rest before we continue on. Is this ::gesturing towards Eliza:: my personal guard? Good, I do need protection. Unless you want something else of me, I shall retire to the tower and sleep.'
Unless there is further conversation, I go upstairs and crash.
SUBJ: Selarin FROM: GrooToo 09/05/91 S#: 38862
Quickly climbing the tower I wonder about Argents safety. Seeing her float down I gasp in astonishment. As Perrel yells to enter the tower I reach the door area too late to enter.
"Damn!" I curse as I hang there. When Perrel Motions to descend I do so repelling rapidly. Seeing Argent rise and just missing her comment I wait at the bottom of the tower and catch my breath.
"Omni, there may be no way in. Mages can sometimes make openings in solid stone." Looking up I note Perrel on the roof, "Perrel may be trying to find a way in though the roof however." After hearing of Argent's strange comment I echo sympathies of worry and contemplate the feasibility of a possession or something along that line. "Omni I believe we should watch Argent very carefully. She is still a mage possessed or not and could endanger us if she losses control. With that I will go Take turns watching Argents quarters.
Sword of Doom #58
After returning from the greater mage tower Argent is behaving strangely. She announces that the Company shall leave to continue the Sword Quest in the morning. Omni and Eliza, and later Selarin, follow Argent. True to her words, she returns to her usual sleeping area and rests.
Meanwhile, Perrel explores the roof of the tower. The upper portion of the tower is cone shaped and ends at a point. Climbing is tricky up here due to the angle of the roof, but much less dangerous then the side of the tower.
A hatch is spotted, but Perrel is unable to open it. He deduces that it is probably sealed on the other side.
The Company searches for another entrance to the tower, but none is found.
SUBJ: GM Notes: FROM: GM Mad 09/06/91 S#: 521948
There appears to be no normal entrance to the tower. (Something that would not necessarily stop a powerful mage.) The tower is constructed of huge stone blocks. The windows appear to be glass, but sound metallic when struck. The cone-shaped roof is wooded, as is the hatch.
You can locate digging tools if you search the Keep's stores for them. Perhaps brute force is the only way in?
Now what?
And what is wrong, if anything, with Argent?
SUBJ: Schar FROM: Schar 09/07/91 S#: 839793
My heart almost leaps out of my chest when I see Perrel clowning around on the top of the tower.
"Is he crazy?!"
This is asked to Omni.
"What is that fool trying to do? Kill himself?"
I change subjects back to Argent and try to put Perrel's antics out of my mind.
"I'm not sure what I can do. Regardless my present spell list is not suitable for the task. It will have to wait until tomorrow for to try anything."
For the next day, I'll pray for
1st Level: Detect Evil, Protection from Evil, Detect Magic, Cure Light Wounds x2
2nd Level: Silence 15' Radius x2, Detect Charm x2, Withdraw
3rd Level: Dispel Magic x2
Next morning I'll meet with Omni concerning Argent.
"I am ready to examine her. Could you and Eliza also attend. Just in case she gets violent. If she should attack us, I'll cast Silence on you Eliza. That will counter her spell casting. Then you should be able to subdue her. I doubt she is a physical match for you."
Before entering Argent's quarters, I'll cast Detect Magic, Detect Evil and Detect Charm. I'll wait to see what I find with the Detect's before continuing on.
When Perrel does come down, I'll embrace him tightly and kiss him passionately.
"Please, don't ever do anything like that again! I was so afraid. Scared that I would lose you."
Much later, I'll ask Perrel and Selarin if Tymora allows them any spells that could help that I cannot cast. (The best ones I could come up with I memorized!)

SUBJ: Eliza FROM: Tora 09/08/91 S#: 796008
Eliza has already volunteered to pull watch on Argent. She won't mind someone giving her a break but she will watch her through the night if no one else will.
When called by Schar, I reluctantly leave Argent. When Schar explains what she wants to do, "Will you cast it before we enter or if something happens? If before, I might not be able to hear any commands. I will also loose out on my own hearing. It is a sense I have been working on greatly. Now if you do it if something comes up, then it should make very little difference. Either way, I will trust your wisdom in this Lady Schar."
I will stand ready when we enter Argent's room. When she makes her statement, I think to myself, 'Now she thinks herself a man? What next?'
SUBJ: Schar FROM: Schar 09/08/91 S#: 500582
Before the examination: "I'll have to cast it on you when Argent resists. It has a short duration, only ten minutes or so."
After I learn my findings, I gesture to have Omni and Eliza follow me.
"My findings settle it. Argent, or whoever she, or he, really is has a tint of evil. Argent may be a bit overzealous when it comes to magic, but I would not consider her evil."
"My suggestion to you Omni, would to immobilize her as soon as possible. This may sound radical, but we don't know what we are dealing with. My advice would be to cast Silence on you and Eliza. Then you can subdue Argent without fear of her casting any spells. Bind her hands and gag her mouth. That will prevent any further spell casting.
I can try to Dispel whatever has a hold on her, but there is no guarantee of success. This is the only way I can see to proceed."
I await Omni's response, or any other suggestions by those present.

I stand there, looking at the hatch and frowning, trying to call upon my vast roguish experience to figure a way in.
"Windows are sealed. Hatch is sealed. There is no door downstairs. Hmmmm...." I think to myself as I stand there, my face contorted in thought.
"Wait a minute!" I say aloud. "The roof's made of wood!"
"Wooden shingles nailed to a wooden frame!" I say, while pulling a stiletto from my wrist sheath.
Then I start work, trying to pry nails up out of the shingles around the hatch.
"This stiletto's going to need some real sharpening after this." I say, while working hard.
Once I get all the nails out of a shingle, I take the shingle off, and start on another one until I have a hole big enough for me to slip through.
When I have that hole, I look and listen through it first, before I slip in through it.

"Yeah, I'll get in that tower if I have to tear it brick by brick!", Crandor snarls.
"Stone by stone, whatever."
He will then dig out these digging tools, and begin trying to get UNDER the tower. If this isn't feasible, then he'll wait to see if Kill manages to break in.
"I wish Padraig were here..", he murmured softly, "He could probably blast that tower to bits."

Clearing up some tower misconceptions here...
The Keep has two mage towers. Each tower grows out of a single building. The first floor of this area is general mage work area. The second floor is the library that was guarded by an invisible stalker.
The towers become separate after the library level. One goes up two more levels. This is the tower that Argent claimed.
The other tower, the one that is horrifyingly difficult to get into, is three stories high. Stairs lead up to what once was an access way. This area is now blocked by stone.
So, it is not necessary to dig under the tower. ;)
SUBJ: Perrel... (R) FROM: Count Kill 09/11/91 S#: 799425
I work hard on prying up shingles, scraping my knuckles repeatedly from the exertion and effort.
I pause a moment, and look down at the others, my eyes lingering on Schar.
I stare at her for a few moments, and really hope I survive this, as if anything were to happen I'd miss her warm embrace, her soft hair, her soothing eyes, and her lovely voice.
Once I feel I've stared at Schar long enough, and have gotten my wind back, I start in on those devilish shingles again.

Frustrated, Crandor decides to copy Kill. Using a rope, he begins to climb the outside of the tower...his goal, the wooden shingles.
SUBJ: Omni FROM: Omni Tuens 09/11/91 S#: 48666
"Okay Schar. Go ahead and use a spell of silence on Eliza. That way, I can lead the way without Argent getting suspicious if she addresses us...it would let me get closer. Eliza, follow my lead, and have some rope ready; I'll try to immobilize her, but I'll need you to secure her."
This said, Omni slips his sword, still sheathed, from his back, and hands the massive weapon to Schar.
"I won't be using this."
Omni then enters Argent's room again, and (assuming she notices his entrance), addresses her as he approaches her slowly.
"Argent, I'm sorry to keep bothering you like this... because I realize you need your rest... but there's something important we need to discuss."
Hopefully by this time he's reached her, and can (with luck) grab her, using one arm to pin her arms next to her body, and his other hand to clamp her mouth shut. Failing this, she gets roughly tackled. (Sorry Argent...but I'm NOT giving any more time than I need to).
Accomplishing this, he'll call for Eliza to jump in with the rope.
Sword of Doom #59
Perrel goes to work on the tower roof. Before too long, Crandor is up there helping him. The work is difficult since the roofing shingles themselves are giant sized!
The sun is sinking behind the mountains as the pair finally make an opening wide enough to drop through. Tossing a rope down the hole, the pair enter the tower.
It is a 15' drop to the stone floor. You are in a huge area. The floor is stone blocks and level. The ceiling is the outer roof itself. Supports and beams take up most of the room.
A hatch is noted in the center of the floor. Unfortunately, it is metallic and refuses to budge.
Tired and weary, the pair return to the rest of the group. At least they have made progress!
Next morning, Schar, Omni and Eliza examine Argent. Fearing her to be possessed, they decide to capture Argent for everyone's safety.
Omni quietly approaches Argent's quarters. He speaks to her as he approaches. Once close enough he grabs her arms and covers her mouth. Argent tries to fight but is no match for Omni's superior strength.
Eliza, operating under a Silence spell, rushes in and binds the mage. Argent puts up a fierce struggle, but cannot free herself. She glares at her attackers.
Suddenly, Argent simply collapses. Several minutes pass and she comes around. She looks about, confused.

The next thing I know, this guy grabs me in vice-grip. I try to squirm but cannot match his strength. 'Hey! What are you doing? Let me go!! I'll--'
My voice fades as this other muscle woman comes in. I'm helpless to resist either one of them. In moments they've got me wrapped up nice and tight. Shouting is now out after the gag is popped in. I can only give them evil glares!! Everything goes black shortly after that...
I awaken with a throbbing headache. For some reason, I find myself tied up! I'm in my own bed, my nightgown is torn in several places and Omni and Eliza are hovering over me! 'I never knew they were so kinky!' I think to myself. ;D

I am waiting down on the ground for Perrel to finish whatever it is he is doing. When he does come down, he finds me there rhythmically tapping one foot and featuring my best stern look.
After a brief reunion, I then grab him but his overgrown ear and drag him back to my quarters.
"What do you think you were doing? Trying to give me a heart attack? Life is far to precious to waste on such fool stunts. You could have died if you had fell! That is too high a price to pay!"
My mood is somewhat mollified once we reach my quarters. Once inside, I instruct Perrel to sit. I return shortly with a washbowl and pitcher of hot water.
"Men simply do not know how to take care of themselves! Let's get you out of those dirty things."
I help Perrel out of his things and gently wash him. Seeing the cuts, bruises, and blisters I pause to kiss them gently. Taking a second wash pan that I had already prepared, I sponge on a mixture of healing herbs.
"This will increase the healing time and soothe the skin. It's more then what you deserve for doing something so foolish! Priest of luck indeed!"
After the cleansing of his wounds, I return with a tray of food and drink. I curl up in Perrel's lap and feed him. My anger is long since gone, but the fear still remains. I hold him close.
"I was so afraid that I was going to lose you. Please, don't frighten me like that again..."
I finally break down and tears well up in my eyes...
Next day, after finishing the examination of Argent, I suggest my plan. Casting Silence on Eliza, I stand back and watch them go to work. It was as easy as I had hoped. Argent always did say that she was feeble.

As we climb down, I'm more than somewhat frustrated over the findings on the roof, and my mind races for a way to enter the tower.
But, all those thoughts vanish when I get to the ground and see Schar standing there tapping her foot, and I know I'm in trouble.
I smile at her just before she grabs my ear, and as she drags me off I give the others a shrug and wave goodbye.
After she sits me down, and starts complaining about my foolishness, I start to protest, but realize that's not going to help the situation any, so I just fill her in on what Crandor and I found.
When she tells me to take off my clothes, I smile widely, and am a little disappointed when she only wants to clean me off.
"Oh, that feels good." I say when she applies her salve to the scrapes and cuts on my hands.
When she offers me the food, I find that I can't resist, the work on the roof giving me a large appetite, and I quickly gobble down whatever food she offers me.
When she starts crying and holding me tight, I put the food aside, before holding her tightly as well, my right hand slowly caressing her hair.
"I know you were worried, and truth to tell, so was I. Not for myself though, as I trust Tymora to grant me her luck, but for you."
"I know, I know, I was the one swinging around on the roof, why was I worried about you." I say softly, while continuing to hold her tightly. "I guess it's because...I love you."
"We knew it wasn't going to be easy, and it's not going to get any easier. At any given moment, either you or I could be in trouble, with the other being able to do nothing but worry."
"Now while this is rough, the only other alternative is to not care for each other, and I don't think either of us could do that." I say, before moving my hand under her chin, and slowly pulling her head up to look at me.
Then I kiss her, softly, while holding her close, letting actions instead of words tell her how much I love her.

As for the opening why not try to pull the stone back around your opening to increase the structural capacity of the opening so that it is less likely to fall." After offering my Opinion I will go back to Argents room. " Omni, is there anything that I can do to help? If she is possessed again I could try and charm her with a spell. "Do what is necessary to get us in. I'll gladly use my strength to help. I realize it seems as if I'm delegating an overly amount, but to be honest, I have to be more concerned with Argent's situation at this point."
When Selarin comes to him with questions, his response is basically the same.
"I thank you for your help, Selarin, but I believe the problem with Argent can probably be handled. However, you more than likely would be useful in helping to get in that tower. It seems to be very stubborn...""
Finally, back to Argent's Bedroom.
Omni slowly pulls the gag from Argent's mouth, sitting down on the edge of her bed and looking at her sternly. He looks to both Eliza and Schar, nodding, then turns back to the mage.

In the morning, when Schar tells me that maybe I should wait for Argent to answer questions first, I agree, and hold off on casting the spell until she does answer them.

'What was I doing in the tower? Looking around of course. A powerful mage used to live there! Who knows what magic lurks about the tower.'
'How did I get in? Simply, magic.' ::smiles at this: 'I merely transformed myself into a vapor, found a crack in the stone and seeped through. Pretty clever, huh?'
'What happened? Hmm... what did happen? I remember a small library, this humongous lab with all sorts of interesting things and then... darkness... then I was here all wrapped up by you two. You going to let me go or what?'

Since he can't help those with bulging muscles go thru the wall. He will go see if he can help Omni with Argent. "Can I be of some help?"

"She's back to normal, Omni."
When the question of going into the tower is brought up:
"Are you sure that we should try to go in there? Someone went to a lot of trouble for their privacy. Considering what happened to Argent after she went in there, do you think it wise to send others in?"

Listening to Schar's worries I offer a response, "Schar if a number of us go in whatever it is can't control us all and those that are not controlled can hold those who are. I think we should take the chance. Tymora will be with us if we go for it. Omni I think that Schar and Perrel should stay outside they represent most of our magical power and could throw spells of hold person to control those who might be
possessed. I volunteer to go in and I think Crandor or Mastiff should accompany me. That way if things are bad then wee can get out without tripping over everyone else, plus Argent can keep an eye on us with her crystal ball. What do you think of that plan?" After voicing my opinion I will await to see what Omni has to say.
