Sword of Doom #60
Argent has seemingly returned to normal. That matter taken care of, the groups attention has turned to the mysterious tower.
Schar attempts to Dispel the Wall of Stone, but has no success.
Perrel takes over and using Stone Shape creates an opening large enough to crawl through in the stone.
Passing through the new opening, you find yourselves in a large chamber. It looks like a combination reception/library. Comfortable ironwood furniture fills the room and book cases line the walls.
A casual glance at this smaller library and you note the subjects span ocean life, the outer planes, recipes, philosophy and the nature of other cultures. One shelf is noted to hold books on the far eastern land of Materi. (Eliza's home land.)
The stairs continue to spiral up. They lead to another hatch in the ceiling. This one is currently open. (Argent recalls using magic to open the hatch.)
You emerge into a huge mage laboratory. It fills the entire 60' square room. Items too numerous to mention are present. (Basically anything you could imagine to find in a mage laboratory is here.)
Two items grab your attention. One is a huge diamond, approximately the size and shape of a football! It glows slightly.
The other item rests on a stand in the center of the room. It is a crown that appears to be forged of pure platinum. It is bejeweled with ten diamonds of large size. (Not as large as the one above, only about fist sized.) The Crown's value is almost beyond calculating.
The spiral stairs lead up to another hatch, but this one is closed. You cannot get it to open.
SUBJ: Omni FROM: Omni Tuens 09/21/91 S#: 65498
Thoroughly satisfied that Argent is all better, discovering she doesn't remember her adventure, and knowing full well she wouldn't hesitate to do it again, Omni decides its time to move. So when Perrel succeeds in carving open the stone, he favors entering it immediately. However, he does take one safety precaution...
"Schar, maybe you better stay out here for now...just in case we run into trouble."
Then entering the lab with anyone else who wishes to, the warrior looks around in awe, almost gaping. Slowly he finds his voice and speaks.
"What are these things...?"
SUBJ: Schar FROM: Schar 09/21/91 S#: 25000
I'm a bit frustrated when I can't dispel the magic wall.
"Oh well... Do your thing, Perrel."
I give Omni a puzzled look when he tells me to stay behind.
"... As you wish..."
SUBJ: Eliza (R) FROM: Tora 09/21/91 S#: 61485
Since Eliza doesn't know how to read, she shows no interest in the books until it is mentioned that some of the books are about my homeland. She asks to be shown which books are about her homeland. Once she is shown, she takes the books and sets them in a carefully stacked pile to be removed when the group leaves. She then follows Omni into the lab. When she sees the diamond and crown, her first thoughts are of picking it up. Then she realizes something and speaks out loud, "I bet she touched either the diamond or the crown and ended up being possessed." With that, I move to stand guard over the 2 items, preventing anyone from touching them until a safe way is decided upon to test my revelation.
SUBJ: Gathis FROM: RAD DWEEBE 09/21/91 S#: 515302
Gathis is speechless as he enters the lab. He gasps, then starts looking through everything, everything. If the others leave here, he will stay and look.
Gathis is amazed at the size of the lab, and asks questions of the other mages when he needs to.
SUBJ: Argent (R) FROM: Enchantres 09/22/91 S#: 22642
'Its about time' I say to Omni once freed. I'll be sore for a week!'
Once my guests leave, I'll wash and get dressed. Thumbing through the closet, I'm come across a nice dark blue dress. It's low cut with slits on the side going almost to the waist. A high-backed cloak and matching soft boots finishes today's outfit.
Next I raid the jewelry box cover myself with precious items. A tiara, armbands, anklet's and a jeweled belt are only some of the items. While doing this, I note the strange necklace and rings I am wearing. 'Where did these come from? I don't remember...'
After dressing, I'll re-memorize my spells. (Same list as last time, GM)
By the time I reach the other tower, the others are already inside. Climbing up the hole is not a pleasant task, but no sense in wasting a spell right now.
In the library, I see Eliza near the books. I approach her and speak to her quietly. 'I heard what happened earlier. I hope you don't judge us all by Crandor's actions. I for one appreciate having you around. I am told that someone needs to keep an eye on me at keep me out of trouble.' I eye the book pile she has collected. 'If you need help with those, feel free to ask.' ::smiles::
I then climb up to the lab. Seeing Gathis in shock, I say 'Impressive isn't it?' as I walk past.
Seeing Crandor, I go over to him. 'I trust that you got your weapons back. Like my outfit.' I spin slowly to give him the full view.
And then I head over to Omni. 'I'm not sure what they are. I suspect that the diamond is a receptacles for whatever took me over. I'd be careful of it. As for the Crown, without further examination, your guess would be as good as mine.'
I smile once more when I see Eliza guarding the items. I'll then look around the rest of the lab, looking for magic items or books and scrolls.
SUBJ: Mastiff FROM: Mastiff1 09/22/91 S#: 494421
Mastiff takes a few books from the Library (Outer planes and recipes). "They may come in handy." His hand scratches Ashes head, who is looking out of his large pouch, as he looks around the lab. "Impressive indeed, I could spend many a year in here."
Mastiff wanders around carefully looking for traps just in case. Then his eye falls upon the diamond and crown.
Mastiff and Ashes eye grow to enormous size, as the gaze at the jeweled crown.
**WOW!**
"Yes Ashes, an appropriate response." Mastiff says staring longingly at the jewel. He redoubles his efforts in searching the lab and library. "Maybe they have smaller ones around here."
SUBJ: Perrel... FROM: GM Kill 09/22/91 S#: 15719
"Nyah!" I say while sticking my tongue out at the tower, when I manage to make the opening.
I give Schar a quick kiss, and then crawl through the opening.
Once inside the tower, I look about the place with the others, also looking for anything secret, hidden, or otherwise out of sight.
Once we enter the lab, I look about in awe.
"This is some place." I say, before starting to feel a strong pressure in my head.
I lean against a wall, and shake my head a few times until the feeling passes.
After that, I decide that maybe a little fresh air would be in order, and I head back outside.
Once outside, I look for Schar, and when I find her, I fill her in on what we found.
"Why don't you head on in there and give them a hand, and I'll wait out here."
SUBJ: Selarin FROM: GrooToo 09/23/91 S#: 112699
After crawling through and seeing the gem and crown and Eliza's position I begin to search the room. There may be more here and I want to see that gem when I get the chance. Until then I will just search and contemplate.
SUBJ: Schar FROM: Schar 09/23/91 S#: 113640
I am mildly surprised when Perrel returns. After learning that his head is hurting and that he wants me to take his place, I run up the opening and quickly locate Omni.
"Omni! I have the feeling that our friend tried to take over Perrel! We are in danger here!!"
SUBJ: Omni (R) FROM: Omni Tuens 09/24/91 S#: 114428
The fighter turns quickly when he hears Schar's words, all other thoughts dashing from his head. He draws his sword even as he begins to speak.
"Danger? Can you find out for sure the source? Is it that gem?"
Omni is obviously determined to take action against this entity, not run from it.
"At this point, I don't know if backing out is an option. Either it's tied to something in this room, in which case we get rid of the object... or this room bound it, in which case we just set it free. Let's stop this now."
If an object can be targeted as the source of the possession attempts, that item will promptly be destroyed or disposed of using whatever means necessary.
SUBJ: Crandor FROM: GM Falcon 09/24/91 S#: 114564
Crandor will wander into the library. His eyes are wide with wonder, but he simply doesn't understand most of this room, and so he finally disregards it.
When Argent stands before him, his eyes widen in appreciation. "Well..", he begins, half-taking a step forward. He stops himself, and smiles slightly: "Yes, VERY nice."
When he hears Schar's words, his eyes narrow. He draws both swords, and scans the room closely, waiting for...?
If he has ANY reason, no matter how slight, to believe the gem/crown has anything to do with this, then he will roar past Eliza in his attempts to destroy the thing.
SUBJ: Schar (R) FROM: Schar 09/25/91 S#: 17589
"Well... I... Uhm..."
My face reddens slightly in embarrassment.
"It's just a feeling, Omni. I'm not sure where the danger is..."
SUBJ: Argent FROM: Enchantres 09/25/91 S#: 19199
I return Crandor's smile and then move off.
Upon remembering something, I head towards Omni. 'Omni, there's something I forgot to mention. These two rings and necklace; do you know where they came from? I've never seen them before. Perhaps our elusive friend gave them to me. Based on that, they must be something useful. I wonder what they do...'
'I seem to recall that gems were used as a receptacle for Magic Jarring. Based on that then the huge diamond would be where our elusive mage is hiding. Destroying the diamond would settle the matter.'
When given the chance, I'll cast Detect Magic to see if the items I'm wearing are magical and if the crown and diamond are magical. I'll then give the lab a quick search before the spell runs out for any additional magic items.
Sword of Doom #61
The Company has finally penetrated the mysterious tower. The lower level is a reception area and holds a small library. The middle level is a huge mage laboratory. A huge diamond and a jeweled crown attract the groups immediate attention.
Argent casts Detect Magic and both items glow in her eyes. Studying both objects she determines the diamond to radiate Necromantic magic, the crown is Alteration.
Realizing that the diamond must be the receptacle for the Magic Jar, the diamond is shattered by Omni and Crandor.
An unearthly wail fills the room after the diamond is smashed. It slowly dies and all is then quiet.
The lab is further searched and several magical radiating items are found. The items are as follows:
Four books, they have yet to be opened so their contents are unknown at present.
Several bottles storied on a shelf radiate magic. There are 6 in all.
Inside a small box are found 4 magical rings.
In the rear of the room is a small weapons rack. Two daggers, a short sword, a rapier, a footman's mace and a set of bracers all detect as magical.
No other magical items are noted.
Later that same day, the Company is gathered around the dinner table. Mastiff and Argent collaborated on the dinner, creating an interesting recipe found in one of the books in the mage tower.
Suddenly and with complete surprise, a group of five Magic Missiles streak into the room and unerringly strike Ashes, Mastiff's familiar! The cat immediately collapses. Mastiff himself immediately lets out a howl of pain and collapses to the floor.
Turning, you see a man at the entrance to the dinning area. (He just turned visible after casting the spell.)
While everyone is recovering from this shock, the man casts a second spell but there is no apparent effect.
Argent is the closest to this intruder, while Gathis is the farthest.
SUBJ: GM Notes: (R) FROM: GM Mad 09/26/91 S#: 31570
Who is this stranger and why did he blow poor little Ashes away??
Remember that no one has had a chance to recover spells, so many of you are low in this area. It is assumed that none of you are wearing your armor (magical protections such as rings, cloaks and bracers are assumed on as they do not interfere with normal activities), although your regular weapons are within easy reach.
Ashes has passed on. Mastiff is in shock after feeling the pain of his familiar's death. He will be in no shape to aid in this fight. Mastiff also permanently lost 1 point of Constitution.
Spectrum's Comments: The perils of having a familair. At any rate, here's some insight to what is going on. One of the other GM's had just joined the Frontier and had re-read the old Sword of Doom posts. He noted that an enemy party was heading toward the keep on the same quest. I ended up letting this other GM create, although I did edit them, this other party and play their actions agianst the main group. So for the rest of this post, and several of the ones to come you're seeing group vs. group action.
SUBJ: Argent (R) FROM: Enchantres 09/26/91 S#: 35604
Argent is feeling very proud of herself after determining where the bodiless mage was hiding. 'That should take care of that' I say after the scream dies away.
Further searching reveals of few interesting magic items. Looks like I get to do some Identifies tomorrow!
Dinner is proceeding pleasantly enough. I playful flirt with the normally stoic Crandor during the meal. ;D
After the missiles strike Ashes, I whirl in my chair to see this evil spellcaster! 'You murderous scum!!', I shout. Without a second thought I go into spellcasting and will try to fry this ******* with a lightning bolt. I'll follow up with a Magic Missile and then Web. If he goes down, I'll hold on the Web. This guy deserves no mercy!!
SUBJ: Perrel... FROM: Count Kill 09/26/91 S#: 37571
I stand watch outside for awhile, but when I hear a tremendous crashing noise, I rush back into the tower, where I see a bunch of diamond shards.
"By Tymora's grace, what happened?" I quickly ask. Once someone explains what happened, I sign in relief, and then I realize that must've been the pressure in my mind that I felt.
I say a silent thanks to Tymora for her blessing.
Then someone mentions the magic rapier that was found, and my eyes open wide.
I pause a moment to say my thanks to Tymora again, for this lucky find, and then I race over to the weapons rack and grab the rapier.
I quickly draw the weapon from its scabbard, and examine it for quality, before swinging it a few times to see how it balances.
Once I'm satisfied with looking at it, I walk over to Omni.
"Omni, you know that I rarely ask for magical items, having only one in fact, and so I feel no regret in saying...Mine! Mine! Mine!" I say while holding the rapier firmly, and smiling widely.
"Especially since no one else here uses one." I say with a wink.
After investigating the tower, I head to the temple and pray to Tymora, thanking her again for all the luck she has bestowed upon me.
Afterwards, I'll find Schar and see if she wants to kill some time together until dinner.
Later, while at dinner, I lightly nibble at the small portion of food on my plate, and wonder how some of the rest of the party can stand to eat as much as they do.
"Hey, after dinner, who's up for some cards?" I ask the assemblage. "I cut up some sausages for betting chips."
Just then Ashes gets blown away, and I turn to see the intruder.
I quickly stand and cast a Silence 15' radius on the intruder, and after that, I draw my hand crossbow and fire at him until the others have closed for melee combat, at which time I draw my weapon and advance as well.
If the silence spell works, I fire at him as often as possible, otherwise whenever he begins to cast a spell.
SUBJ: Crandor.. FROM: GM Falcon 09/27/91 S#: 38982
Crandor grins at Argent, and sits near her at the table. He is returning the 'flirts' pound for pound, often upping the ante with borderline innuendos.
Then he sees Ashes destroyed, and his eyes narrow.
"ATTACK!!!!", he bellows, though his compatriots need no help from him in this matter. He will rush to melee with his swords.
SUBJ: Omni FROM: Omni Tuens 09/28/91 S#: 56893
Omni allows himself to smile as the gem is destroyed, dispersing the possessor. He is still uneasy in the room, but realizes there is little else to be done to the things in here.
"Everyone stake claim to what you wish. If there are no conflicting claims, it will save me the time of dividing it up."
The fighter is then close to relaxing over the elaborate dinner when the stranger appears and blows away the innocent cat. He is obviously furious, and barely slows down to reach for his sword as he charges the man (taking the most direct route, whether that be over or around the table).
"Drop him! We can ask questions later... after we make sure there aren't more!"
SUBJ: Eliza (R) FROM: Tora 09/28/91 S#: 59638
Eliza watches the going ons within the tower. When the magic items are found, I ask for no items at this time. Maybe one of the rings or the bracers after they have been figured out.
When the man appears and launches his attack, I grab my katana and leap to the attack. My only thought is to destroy this man that has brought pain to a friend.
SUBJ: Gathis FROM: RAD DWEEBE 09/28/91 S#: 60302
(I love being far away from danger!)
Gathis quickly remembers if he has a spell left( I think he does)and being farthest away, stands on a table to get a clear view to blow that mage away with a missile or something like that ;)
If the unlikely occasion should happen that I don't have a spell left, I hide under a table unless the battle gets out of hand. If it :looks bad for the party, I will grab the crown and see what happens.
SUBJ: GM Notes: (R) FROM: GM Mad 09/28/91 S#: 62483
The Company leaps to the attack at the cat-killing mage.
Argent whirls and tags him with a Lightning Bolt. The spell does interrupt the mages own spellcasting, but does not put him down.
As everyone else goes to the attack, they are shocked to find an invisible barrier between themselves and Argent the mage.
(The second spell he cast that had no apparent effect. ;)
The barrier does not give, nor does any spells cast penetrate it. Perrel's Silence spell and Gathis' Magic Missile do not reach their target.
Now what?

Present:
Seeing the evil and nasty mage burned by my lightning bolt brings a smile to my face. 'Time for more of your own medicine!' I go into casting Magic Missile. If I can keep him from casting any spells, then the fighters can take him down. Yep, those fighters should be advancing any moment now... ;D

::Evil Grin::
P.S. Hiya guys! Seems y'have a bit o' a problem, eh? ;D While you pick up yer rather bruised bodies off th'floor after hitting me Wall o' Force.. You might wish to consider your poor innocent lil kitty cat, and count yourselves lucky that it wasn't a fireball... >:)

"How could anyone be so cruel?"

Mastiff and Ashes whimper when the diamond is broken. "Such a waste." He brightens up a little when the uncover the hidden treasure. "Omni, I would like to ask for the short sword or a ring." Mastiff and Ashes continue to snoop around the lab and library.
At Dinner:
"This should be interesting." Mastiff sits and watches the group eat. "I guess the recipe was good. I think I'll keep this book." With that he relaxes with Ashes next to him to enjoy the meal.
One bite. "Mmmmmm, that pretty goo...AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!"
(BIG SCREAM) Mastiff screams as if his soul has been rendered by some demon and collapses to the table. *The pain, the pain.. I cannot stand the pain. ASHES!!!*
Mastiff fades into the soothing arms of darkness.
Sword of Doom #62
The confrontation with the mystery cat-killing mage continues...
Argent Lightning Bolts the mage and taunts are exchanged.
Meanwhile, the others discovered that they have been separated from the mages by a Wall of Force. Realizing that the wall cannot be penetrated, several of the Company runs to the other exits from the room so that they can circumvent the Wall.
The mage gets his spell of first this time and five Magic Missiles slam into Argent and she drops to one knee.
Seeing the others going for the side doors, the mage turns and rushes out the main exit.
The fighters re-enter the dinning room on Argent's side of the wall to find the mage gone. No one noticed him along the way either.
A quick search of the keep is performed, but the mage or any other intruders are found.
Mastiff comes around after a time, aided by a CLW from Schar. Mast will live, but he feels that he has lost a part of himself forever...
The night passes uneasily. (I'm assuming that guards were posted, but no incidents occurred.)
Next morning, several of the Company find that their abilities have improved.

Once the wall fades, he stomps forward. "Are you okay?", he asks Argent. He smiles at her a bit seductively. He then turns his attention to Omni: "We'll have to find this nut, and fast. Argent's going to need a bodyguard." His tone suggests where he fells he fits in in that equation. "Someone for Mastiff too, that familiar-bashing may have been a prelude to an attempt on HIM."

"Everyone else- we're conducting a detailed search of this place... and I mean every inch. Make sure the drawbridge is up, and check for other possible exits."

'You're right, Omni. We are facing a very intelligent foe. He figured out that Ashes was Mastiff's familiar. Mastiff could have very easily died with his familiar due to their magical link. He did separate me from the rest of the group. Perhaps he figured out that I was the most powerful mage here. Fortunately, I got my Lightning Bolt off first. I could very easily be dead right now.'
'Let me see now, he threw 5 Magic Missiles... That means he's a powerful mage. Much more powerful then myself. He could have attacked us and then used magic to escape to a safe place when he saw the fighters coming around. This is not the last we shall see of this mage. When Schar opens the door to her quarters there is a burst of fire! Schar is slightly burned and took 10 points of damaged. (Also, 41 hp's was an error, the correct number is 48.)
Gathis returns to his quarters and finds it ransacked. His spell book is nowhere to be found.
Several of the other living quarters appear to have been searched. (Some that the group is now occupying and some of the unoccupied ones.)

"My quarters. That moron isn't going to go chase a ranger around without good reason." He stomps off, leading the way.
Entering, he promptly lies Argent on his bed. He grins at her for a moment, then rises. "Someone get Gathis. Schar, stay here for a moment." He looks over, as Gathis (one can assume) reports his stolen book.
"OMNI!", the ranger bawls. When he finally arrives, Crandor speaks tersely: "Let's find Mastiff's book, and Argent's. Those are going to become important." He frowns then, and heads back to his quarters.

'MY BOOKS!! We've got to get those books!!' I leap out of Crandor's arms and run to the tower. (Yes, she could walk but wanted to see how much she could manipulate Crandor. What an evil woman! ;D)
I'm sure that Crandor follows. If my books are still there, I'll gather then all and my other magic items and follow Crandor to his quarters.
'This mage knows what he is doing. He's eliminating the spell casters first. Not good.'
I smile evil back at Crandor when he lies me on his bed. 'To bad we have company. Why should Schar and Perrel have all the fun?'
'I do have Detect Invisible, Crandor. I will memorize it ASAP. However, it only lasts about half an hour.' Taking my spell books, I lie there and study.
New Spells: Magic Missile, Shield, Reduce, Color Spray, Alarm, Web, Mirror Image, Detect Invisibility, Lightning Bolt, Fly

She will use her senses at their fullest realizing that this guy must be using some spell to cover up any visual clues to finding him. Maybe her ears will work better, with this in mind she will ask to go into a room by herself so she can search with her other senses. She will have her Katana at the ready.
I hope this fits. If not, I hope you understand I tried my best for a character not mine and that I am not too familiar with. :)
SUBJ: Mastiff FROM: Mastiff1 10/08/91 S#: 472559
With Schar's help Mastiff rises from the table. Rage grows behind his tears, as his eyes fall upon Ashes broken body. Gingerly Mastiff picks up Ashes and places her in her pouch. "I'm sorry, Ashes, I should have been more careful with you." He looks up Schar "Can you help her?" he says as tears roll down his face.
When Schar says she can't he looks up scanning the area where the mage was last seen. "Where is that dead man Schar? His soul will be mine to savor, and destroy." When he is told that the mage is gone, he takes Ashes out of her pouch and cradles her. He is easily lead to Crandor's room.
He sits in a corner, with Ashes in one arm and his spellbook open. "I always carry my spellbook with me." he whispers when asked where it is.
Spells:
Magic Missile
Phantasmal Force
Spectrum's Comments: I have to give Mast credit for really playing the lose of Ashes to the hilt. You couldn't help but feel for the character! He does continue to carry around the dead cat and keeps talking to it.

While not suffering as bad as Mastiff, I am not in great shape. These seemingly senseless acts of violence has wounded my very soul.
This is further driven home when I find my door trapped. I'm more annoyed at this development.
When we finally arrive at Crandor's room, I take a position out of the way. My heart goes out to Mastiff sitting in the corner, spellbook in one hand and his lifeless companion in the other.
Next morning, I'll pray for:
1st level: CLW*3, Command, Detect Magic
2nd Level: Wyvern Watch, Withdraw, Silence 15' Radius, Hold Person, Find Traps
3rd Level: Dispel Magic, Invisibility Purge
When Crandor asks of spells to detect invisible objects, I tell him of the Purge.
"The spell creates an area, for about 1 hour, were any invisible creature who enters becomes visible. It may prove to be helpful."
SUBJ: Omni (R) FROM: Omni Tuens 10/09/91 S#: 521804
"Yes, of course... Gathis, I'm afraid you'll need to stay with the rest of the mages. I had hoped our adversary didn't realize you were a spellcaster, but the ransacking of your quarters confirms it."
"Everyone who can set up those detection spells as soon as possible. But that's not enough.. does anyone have invisibility spells of their own?"
Omni's anger is obviously starting to build as his sword still rests loose in its scabbard. "I'm sick of being the prey. It's time to be the hunter. Anyone who knows how... start setting up tripwires in the halls, or anything else useful. And if a curtain so much as rustles in the wind..." He pats his sword hilt confidently, a dangerous gleam sparking in his eye.
"Hack it to pieces."

After the battle, I see the pained look on Mastiff, and I try to help Schar console him.
After that, I try to console Schar, as I see the pained look on her face.
"There wasn't anything you could have done."
Later, when I hear of Schar being hit with a booby trap, my eyes open wide, and I quickly rush to her room. Once I find her, I grab her, and hug her tightly.
"Are you all right? Do you need healing?" I ask worriedly, my face showing nothing but my deep concern for her.
I stay with her afterwards, being constantly worried about how she's doing, and what this jerk might try next.
"We need to think." I say to the others when we're together.
"First off, we obviously need to sleep together tonight. With two people on watch at all times."
"Secondly, if Argent can find him with the crystal ball, that would help immensely."
"Thirdly, we need to figure out what he's up to."
"Obviously, he's not after a specific thing, otherwise he could've just wandered around here while we were sleeping and took it."
"He knows where certain people's rooms are, which indicate that he's been watching us for awhile."
"So, why did he attack us for no reason, and especially when he knew we outnumbered him?"
"It doesn't make much in the way of sense."
"Umm..." I say when Omni starts talking about swinging at rustling curtains. "Let's be careful though, otherwise we're going to get so jumpy that any number of accidents could happen."
"I also had a thought, we can't find him in the castle, how about underneath it? There is that dock area below, he might have a boat down there."
Spectrum's Comments: Next time: The search for the mystery mage continues as do the assualts from the enemy party!
