Sword of Doom - Post 5
At last the Company of the Sword departs Gateway and begins their adventure in the Frontier.
Before leaving, Montagne has Merri purchase a longbow, quiver, and 36 flight arrows. This brings the parties account to 261 gold.
Divided into four groups, the Company travels with Trevor's Caravan. The first day passes without incident.
Late the next afternoon things start to get real interesting. Suddenly the front and middle of the caravan is struck by dozens of arrows. Fortunately, none of the Company is struck, but several Caravaneers go down.
Glancing a quick look about, figures can be spotted in the trees on either side of the road. They are too far away for an accurate identification.
The Caravan comes to a halt as the workers and drivers all make for cover.
At the point, two groups of 10 hobgoblins can be seen rushing in on foot towards the flanks.
GM Notes:
It looks something like this.

Group A is at the point while B,C,D are at the front, middle and rear of the caravan.
Ready for action??
Spectrum's Comments: It took a little bit, but I finally got this group to see some action. Forty goblins might seem like a whole lot, but remember there were 18 PC's, so that's only a hair more than 2 per adventure. This should be pretty easy.
Mail From: Belrek Date: Thursday 23-Aug-90 19:26 EDT
Mad sorry I did not send it sooner, but Belrek's memorized spells are Taunt and Spook.
SUBJ: Belrek FROM: Belrek 08/23/90 S#: 477795
"Hey guys and gals why don't we see what we can do about those archers so that the other groups can deal with those buffons rushing us from the front."
With that Belrek is off his horse and trying to get out of sight under cover. He will try and make his way a little closer to the group on the right and when he is in range, stand up and cast his taunt spell. As soon as he is finished, he will then run VERY VERY fast back to the safety of the caravan.
SUBJ: Arathnasis (R) FROM: Wildchilde 08/24/90 S#: 416515
"We need to take out the archers in those trees"
If someone has a sleep spell or other area effect spell memorized we need it cast on one group of archers. I will dismount and move towards the archers on the left trying my best to take cover and fire back.
SUBJ: Montagne..... (R) FROM: Shaunnessy 08/24/90 S#: 787430
Curse loudly as his engaging conversation with Omni Tuens is rudely interrupted by the murderous arrowfire. Quickly assessing the situation he begins to shout out commands...to those too far away he waves and signals his intentions....
"Balamar, to the fore of the caravan.... begin a retreat towards us!"
"Omni, you and yours take cover on the right side of the caravan away from the left arrow fire and prepare to meet the rushing hobgoblins."
"Tralgo, take Group C and attack the right side archers."
Montagne waves for Group D to move forward and join in the fray....
He then spurs his horse to the right side to help silence the buzzing strings of the archers on the right side of the caravan....
SUBJ: Omni (R) FROM: Omni Tuens 08/24/90 S#: 487028
After the interruption of his discussion with Montagne, Omni listens alertly to the orders, takes in his surroundings, and then takes action. He signals to his group to follow, then moves them to the right side of caravan, where the wagons can be used to shield the arrow fire. After dismounting, he begins spewing 'suggestions' to those around him.
"Merri, you have your bow. Use it to try and slow down those charging hobgoblins and give the point some cover. Eric, if you have the power, have your god bless us, then set to receive charge. Jonathon, I don't know your spells, so just slow down as many as possible."
Omni then pulls his sword and prepares to meet the charge.
SUBJ: Eric... (R) FROM: WitchDoc3 08/24/90 S#: 796012
Listens to Montagne commands then he hightails it to the right side of the caravan. Once there, he starts to take put his holy water for the bless spell but stops for a second when he hears Omni say "Eric if you have the power..." Looks toward omni "Now, what kind of priest would I be if couldn't even cast a bless spell.....humph"
When I cast the spell, I see if I can get everyone in my group in the spell first then, I see if it is possible to reach any other party members. All the while I'm casting, I try to duck behind the other group members or the wagons until I'm done. We all know what good targets spell casters make while their casting their spells...
SUBJ: Eric FROM: WitchDoc3 08/24/90 S#: 338
Once my spell casting is done, I draw my mace and ready myself for the upcoming battle. ::laughing:: "Almost forgot to pull the darn thing out!"
SUBJ: Tristan FROM: FrankP25 08/25/90 S#: 489294
I will try to see if I can get the Archers with my bow. I will try to stay under cover of the caravan. If I can't get the Archers by Arrow I will wait to see if anybody will need healing.
SUBJ: Arathnasis FROM: Wildchilde 08/26/90 S#: 112265
Upon hearing Montagne orders Arathnasis will wave group D toward the attacking hobgoblins. Turning from the archers and beginning to fire at the ones approaching.
"Come on group D lets take these Hobgoblins out of this battle" When He gets close enough he will draw sword and shield and go hand to hand, all the while cursing at the hobgoblins in their own language.
SUBJ: Argent
'Oh, goodie... Hobgobs!'
The first thing Argent will do is get to cover. Then she will, if in range, cast a Magic Missile at one of the Archers in the trees. Next round, I'll fire the other missile at a different archer. After that I'll remain in cover, coming out to whack a hobgob with my staff only when very close by.
Spectrum's Comments: The joys of being a first level mage...
SUBJ: Johnathan FROM: Stretch611 08/27/90 S#: 100426
To GM Mad - Here are the remaining spells I would like in order of importance
1. Color Spray
2. Chromatic Orb
3. Armor
4. Protection From Evil
5. Identify
6. Shocking Grasp
If I get Color Spray or Chromatic Orb the two spells I will have memorized are Chill Touch and (Color Spray, Chromatic Orb) In this case I will use (Color Spray, Chromatic Orb) first followed by Chill Touch if any come close.
If I do not get color spray or chromatic orb, I will memorize Chill Touch and Detect Undead until further notice.
I will use my spells to support the group as much as possible, If I have Color Spray I will use it to take out as many archers in the trees as I can safely get to. If I have Chromatic Orb I will use it to toss at any creature that get too close to the caravan, and then use chill touch to protect myself.
SUBJ: Balamar FROM: Deslock 08/28/90 S#: 848461
- What foulness is this? Little did I suspect our services would be required so soon. -
Before I can utter a word, I see Belrek bounding off his horse and into the underbrush.
"Good luck to you, friend!"
Catching hold of the reins of Belrek's now riderless steed, I call out, "Kein, Perrel, back to the Caravan! We must link up with the others lest we be brought down by weight of numbers!"
I turn my horse and head back toward the others. "Come quickly, we must prepare!"
Once back, I dismount, draw my swords, and prepare for the onrushing hobgoblins.
SUBJ: Merri (R) FROM: Modesty1 08/29/90 S#: 96787
Merri is extremely grateful for the long bow, and thanks Montagne over and over again. She'll spend most of her free time practice with the bow, getting the 'feel' of it.
When the attack comes, Merri's heart races with excitement. This is why she started adventuring, to battle evil! She draws her bow as ordered and fires away at the hobgoblins. At the first opportunity though, she draws her sword and fights hand to hand.
SUBJ: **EVER** FROM: Ever 08/29/90 S#: 808180
Ever moves as close as need be and casts *entangle* at the hobgoblins on the left side, when spell is complete she hollers to the party, "Stay thee away from these cretins on the left! Lest ye find yerselfs enmeshed in mine spell!"
After the casting she rejoins the ranks of her company and unsheathes her scimitar, awaiting the first hobgoblins approach.
Samantha guards at her left side, opposite her flashing blade.
Sword of Doom #6
The caravan guarded by the Company has been ambushed by hobgoblins. Montagne barks some orders and the battle begins!
Argent casts Magic Missile, wounding one archer, knocking him out of the tree. The fall finishes him off.
The archers on the left side of the caravan are stunned when suddenly the branches move to surround them, courteous of Ever's Entangle. All ten archers are wrapped up. One does manage to escape, but perishes from falling out of the tree.
Belrek runs towards the archers to the right, and proceeds to Taunt them. Enraged, the hobgoblins begin to climb down to pursue the gnome.
Up front, the Company braces for the hobgoblin attack. Balamar and Kein each slay one foe, while Omni removes two with his great sword. Tristan and Merri make good use of their bows, each slaying one hobgoblin.
Seeing the archers running towards the caravan in a group, Jonathon spins and hits them with a Color Spray. Six of the nine go down. Argent removes another with a Magic Missile and normal arrows finish them.
The hobgoblins up front strike back. Perrel is badly wounded, while Omni, Tralgo and Balamar take less threatening injuries.
Group D enters the fray up front. Carpathia and Berek each remove one hobgoblin, as do Arathnasis, Omni and Balamar.
Jonathon follows up with Chill Touch, but fails to touch is target.
The hobgoblins up front begin to lose their resolve. Many of them have fallen. They begin to retreat.
While that is going on, noise draws the companies' attention to the rear of the Caravan. There, a fifth unit of hobgoblins have sneaked in from the rear. They have captured three wagons and are prepared to ride off with them.
Spectrum's Comments: That probably went a little easier than I had first expected, so a little more excitement was added.
GM Notes:
The two front groups are in retreat. The left hand group is down to 2 members, while the right has 6. Nine of the archers on the left are Entangled, 6 of the archers on the right are unconscious. The rest are dead.

SUBJ: Johnathan FROM: Stretch611 08/31/90 S#: 815034
Knowing I have but a few minutes for my chill touch, I will leap onto a horse (using my riding proficiency, careful not to touch horse) and immediately go into a full gallop, I will try to get to the first wagon and leap off (again using my riding proficiency) on the wagon I will try to chill touch any in my way, yelling "Evil, die like the pig dogs you are!!!"
SUBJ: Montagne deGallant.... (R) FROM: Shaunnessy 09/01/90 S#: 827436
is surprised and a bit dismayed at the efficiency of the Company.....he has yet to bloody his own blades in glorious battle. Hearing the noise to the rear he quickly shouts a few words of encouragement followed by some specific commands.
"Merri! Aim for those entangled archers. Finish them before they free themselves.
Belrek! You and Argent finish off the color sprayed hobgoblins....that spell won't hold forever!
The rest of Group A remains with Omni and Eric in case the retreating hobgoblins decide to stage a rally.
Everyone else except Perrel, to me! Let us vanquish those too cowardly to face us directly and reclaim our wagons!"
Montagne then spurs his horse after the thieving hobgoblins, waving one of his rapiers over his head wildly.
Once he catches up to the enemy he will guide his horse with his knees while wielding both rapiers simultaneously.......
SUBJ: Berek DemonSlayer FROM: AREION 09/01/90 S#: 426482
Berek doesn't need to be told twice, he turns his hoarse wildly, silently cursing his lack of foresight to remain behind and guard the rear position.
Battle Axe in hand, he spurs his hoarse hard, knowing full well that a mount with a singe rider can outrun a pair laden with a merchant's wagon.
Laughing and babbling nearly incoherently he races after the wagon in the lead until he catches it or his mount gives out. When/If he reaches the wagon he'll grin at the driver with a wild glare in his eyes before leaping from his horse onto the wagon (I hope) and sever the thief's head with his Axe.
SUBJ: Argent
Argent smiles at the effect of her spells. She looks at her hand with a 'Not bad' look on her face.
'Nice going there, Jonathon. You'll have to teach me that spell someday. Very effective!'
Upon hearing Mon's orders, Argent will take her staff in hands. Using it she will whack the down hobgobbies. Those looking will notice that she closes her eyes right before hitting them. (Gross)
Spectrum's Comments: I would imagine that Argent didn't think she'd start her career in exactly this fashion.
SUBJ: Tristan FROM: FrankP25 08/30/90 S#: 829162
If it is possible we should go after the Hobgoblins in the rear to get the wagons. Maybe some magic could slow them down. I figure one group could hold off the other groups. If the Hobgoblins on the rear are too far for me, then I will attack with bow. If none are in range then I will cast CLW on the player in the worst condition. At all costs we must try to get those wagons back. I'll get the Archers with my bow if they are in range, if hobgoblins aren't.
"Let's get those wagons! Get those scumbags! Don't worry about the Archers, a few of us can handle them. Let's go!"
SUBJ: Merri FROM: Modesty1 09/01/90 S#: 825618
Merri winces when Montagne gives her the order to take out the archers. Firing on defenceless foes is NOT her idea of fun. But she does go along with the party leader. She'll fire arrows at the archers until all fall. She glances wistfully at the riders taking out the wagons between shots though. She'll sigh when they are all down, and look around for any action.
plunk-plunk, ho-hum,
Spectrum's Comments: While a necessary action, Merri wasn't too pleased with taking out the downed hobgoblins either.
SUBJ: Arathnasis (R) FROM: Wildchilde 09/03/90 S#: 838757
As the hobgoblin forces are being repelled a little sigh of relief comes across Arathnasis' lips. Hearing the commotion behind him he turn to see the hobgoblins stealing the wagons
"Blast. Montagne, we should have expected this sort of treachery, we will have to be more careful in the future, if a feeble minded hobgoblin horde can draw us away then a formidable foe well may be able to lead us to slaughter."
Arathnasis is really kicking himself for leading group D into the front ranks whether he was told to or not; he accepts full responsibility for the action.
"See if you can't take one of the devils alive, I should wish to speak to him."
SUBJ: Omni Tuens FROM: Omni Tuens 09/03/90 S#: 840218
Upon (hopefully) seeing that the repulsion of the forward hobgoblins is complete, Omni quickly remounts his horse and seeks out Trevor.
"Trevor! Have your men put their wounded aboard the wagons, then prepare to move out! We cannot remain here- we must travel hard until sundown, and longer if possible. Montagne and the others can take care of those in the back, but we must have the front of the column moving immediately, or the hobgoblins may return!"
With this, he moves to aid the remobilizing of the caravan, riding longside the lead wagon once it is back in motion.
SUBJ: **EVER** (R) FROM: Ever 09/05/90 S#: 90886
Ever smiles slightly upon seeing the results of her cast spell. Standing with scimitar drawn and waiting, she is slightly startled by Montagne's call for the hunt of the retreating hobgob's. Nevertheless, she resheathes the blade, lurches into her saddle, and with Samantha at her heels, trots speedily after the hobgobs.
Once she jolts alongside one, she will unsheathe her blade and proceed to hack-n-slash.
SUBJ: Balamar FROM: Deslock 09/05/90 S#: 429923
"Not too fast, Omni. Having just routed them, I doubt the hobgoblins will be back immediately. As you noted, we have wounded to attend to, and other members of our group are pursuing the captured wagons. We don't want to get too spread out, or we will make the hobgoblins job that much easier. We have time to reorganize this caravan before moving on."
SUBJ: Perrell... FROM: GM Kill 09/07/90 S#: 402419
"Haha!" I shout as I move about while fighting the Hobgoblins. "Luck is with me today!"
::Slice:: ::Stagger, Stagger::
"Then again, maybe not." I say while watching my nice bright blood stain my nice white shirt.
If someone is going to be kind enough to heal me, I'll fall back to let them, otherwise I'll continue fighting, counting on luck to see me through.

Sorry I missed the last three posts all, but my 128D decided it wanted a vacation, so I wound up taking one too, whether I wanted to or not. :ü
But, it's back and working hard again. So, I say onward, let's find that sword. :)
Sword of Doom #7
The Company has managed to repel the main group of attacking hobgoblins. However, they have discovered that that attack was a diversion. A fifth group of hobgoblins have taken a trio of wagons are fleeing with their stolen goods.
Many of the Company pursues, while the others recover from the attack. Merri, Argent and Belrek are given the task of dealing with the magically incapacitated archers.
Jonathon leaps upon his mount and rides after the fleeing Hobgoblins. With great care not to unleash his active Chill Touch, Jon leaps aboard the first wagon, touching the driver in the process. The hobgoblin is rendered unconscious and falls off.
Turning, Jon sees the other hobgoblin preparing to strike him with its shortsword. Suddenly, the hobgoblin stiffens up and falls over. Behind is Montagne with a bloodied blade.
Further along, Berek boards the next wagon with a flying leap. His momentum carries him into both hobgoblins, sending all three flying off the wagon. One hobgoblin is knocked unconscious from Berek landing on him; a sword thrust from Arathnasis as he rides past dispatches the other.
The remainder of group D surrounds the last wagon. Ever and Samantha force the drivers to halt. Finding themselves outnumbered, the hobgoblins drop their weapons.
GM Notes:
My apologizes for taking so long to get this posted, but I had a very long workweek. The next post will be up on the regular day, Thursday.
XP's will be awarded next post.
The caravan can be ready to move within half an hour. What are you going to do with the captured hobgoblins?
Also, include new spells lists.

SUBJ: Montagne.... (R) FROM: Kazroth 09/09/90 S#: 497009
Yes, this IS *me* and I've 'almost' got my name back....
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Spurring his mount after the pursuing Jonathon and the three stolen wagons, Montagne gasps as Jonathon makes his heroic leap. Surprise turns to chagrin as his mistake becomes apparent. Montagne quickly closes the distance, thrusting his blade at the second hobgoblin as it begins to attack the now defenseless Jonathon. By the time the beast hits the ground Montagne is ready to move on to another wagon, however the efficiency of the Company astounds him once again as they have already captured the other two wagons.
Montagne gathers the wagons and rejoins the main body of the caravan.Looking around he quickly assesses the situation.
"Congratulations Company! We've won our first battle! Now on to other important issues....First, anyone wounded, into the wagons. I'd like the healers among us to tend them, including any of the drivers who survived their wounds. Secondly, Omni take "B" and organize the remainder of the caravan so we can move out ASAP. Once on the way everyone is to fall into their original position as before except those still hurt, if any."
Later on at a quiet moment Montagne will take Jonathon aside where NO ONE else can hear and have a private 'chat' with him....
"Jonathon, we all appreciate your efforts on this day. In fact without you things might've gone much worse. It is for that very reason that I'd like you to understand that from now on, PLEASE stay with your group! No more solo attacks, especially when you are outnumbered like today. We are the 'Company' we can and do act together... ...and I'd like to see ALL of us remain together for a long time. There is strength in numbers and had you been killed that loss would have been much more grievous than ANY number of wagons."
::clapping Jonathon on the shoulder::
"Let us return to the rest and enjoy the last bit of this journey, hopefully in peace."
Montagne spends the rest of the trip circulating among the members of the Company, pausing to give each and every one a word or two of commendation on their various battle deeds.
On the subject of the hobgoblins:
Montagne studies the surly creatures in front of him. Turning to the Company he asks if anyone per chance speaks hobgoblin or goblin. He addresses the drivers as well when asking.
"Tralgo, see to the prisoners' bindings. They will be placed in wagons closest to your group. We will interrogate them when we reach Gerald's Fort."
SUBJ: E*V*E*R FROM: Ever 09/09/90 S#: 463249
is pleased at her rapid approach upon the third escaping wagon. Needless to say, only her scowling visage along with Samantha's steel determination were enough to scare the fleeing hobgoblins into stopping..
Ever quickly jumped out of her saddle and rushed the hobgobs..
"HO! HALT! Surrender yourselves to me and my..." With a nervous glance to Samantha, "My... Hobgoblin trained killer beast, WolfFangShredder. Yes, Shredder, come here and stand guard over these miserable beasts." This last was said with a mental thought directed at Samantha, "And PLEASE try to look more FEARSOME!"
Somehow, Ever and Samantha, err rather WolfFangShredder, managed to hold onto the captured hobgobs until help arrived, irregardless of their knocking knees, and Ever's shaking sword arm....
Spectrum's Comments: Now that's funny. WolfFangShredder is quite a name!
Mail From: Stretch611 Date: Sunday 9-Sep-90 18:54 EDT
Hi this is Johnathan from the Sword of Doom game. In my post I ask the person that will interrogate the captured creatures if they know the name Zombie Master, I will be there during the questioning and if I think they react to the name then I will kill it before anyone can stop me if possible. Did you ask for spells known by the spellcasters if so here is my spellbook:
Read Magic
Detect Undead
Chill Touch
Color Spray
Chromatic Orb
Identify
My memorized spells are Chill Touch and Color Spray
See you later
Spectrum's Comments: Dealing with the Zombie Master was one of the Missions on the bulletin board back in the Frontier. Jonathan has a past history with ZM, hence his special interest.
SUBJ: Tristan (R) FROM: FrankP25 09/09/90 S#: 13131
Let's get as much information out of the Hobgoblins as possible. Maybe they have a camp somewhere and we could investigate it. There's always something going on in their camps. I will use a CLW on one of the party members. I will take CLW again. I will spend the remainder of the camp resting, praying and training.
SUBJ: Johnathan FROM: Stretch611 09/09/90 S#: 415642
After a brief and private chat, Johnathan calls for attention and says "Never will I allow evil to bother those around me, my life means nothing to me until all of evil is destroyed."
When the subject of the hobgoblins arise, Johnathan will ask the person who interrogates them if they know the name Zombie Master. It is just a name I have heard and thought they may know.
SUBJ: Argent
Thankful that this battle is now over, Argent will clean the hobgoby goo off her staff and then proceed to clean wash herself thoroughly.
'Zombie Master? Sounds like a pleasant fellow. A relative, Jon?'
Assuming that nothing else happens, I'll memorize Magic Missile*2.
Spectrum's Comments: Argent just couldn't let that zinger go past.
SUBJ: Balamar FROM: Deslock 09/09/90 S#: 456567
"Don't worry about these scratches, Montagne, they're not serious. As close as I can come to hobgoblin is orcish, which I don't think will help, but if you want to give it I shot, you know where to find me."
Once we get moving again, I'll move back to the front, and take up scouting duty again, hopefully a little more vigilantly this time.
SUBJ: Arathnasis FROM: Wildchilde 09/10/90 S#: 787768
::pulling my blade free of the now dead Hobgoblin::
"Fine job comrades, you have all proved yourselves in the face of battle. Montagne, I have a working knowledge of the language of these beasts. I will interrogate them."
With that I will go over and begin to ask the prisoners questions, "Where are you from??" " Who sent you?" "Do you know of the Zombie Master" (that's for you Jon :) ) And anything else the party thinks should be asked.
Gm Notes:
After some talking, the hobgoblins relate they their tribe serves the mysterious being known as the Zombie Master.
They prisoners know little of the Zombie Master himself. His lair is further to the north, within in an abandoned Temple of Ehlonna.
Best guest would place the lair some 4-5 days to the north. The caravan regroups and is underway under an hour.
SUBJ: Omni Tuens (R) FROM: Omni Tuens 09/11/90 S#: 813089
Omni is pleased to see how quickly the caravan regroups, and rides near the lead wagon dutifully, letting absolutely nothing distract him from his duty. Upon hearing what the interrogation revealed, he raises an eyebrow, but refrains from commenting. After a few moments of thought, he comments:
"Eric, if you have any healing spells left, you might want to use them on some of the wounded merchants; it might speed up our progress."
When given a chance, he also pulls near Montagne and speaks:
"Just a thought, Montagne, but I say we try and get Trevor to loan us a wagon. The mages could use it to get a head start on rememorizing spells while we travel. After all, they are still growing in power, and I'm afraid the skirmish may have overextended their abilities..."
SUBJ: Arathnasis FROM: Wildchilde 09/12/90 S#: 826942
::Rather surprised when hears that they do know of the zombie master.::
After relating the information that I could obtain from the Hobgoblins I will speak to the group.
"Well Comrades what do we do with our "Guests" here?? Also what about this creature known as the zombie master, just the name reams of evil and hence should be destroyed, granted we are on a quest for the crown and speed is of the essence but I fear the crown may be unaware of he danger that lies close to them. I suggest that we consider an assault on the so-called Zombie Master and his forces of Evil. It is possible they could be in league with the Hextorites and may lead us closer to the sword (granted this is a long shot)"
SUBJ: Merri (R) FROM: Merri2 09/12/90 S#: 397313
Merri notices Belrek taking out the entangled archers with her. "This is not exactly to my liking. How about you? I prefer honest battle over this sort of killing."
She'll seek out Berek after she's done. "I saw you chasing down that wagon. Gee, that must have been exciting! Tell me all about it." She looks into his eyes with wonder.
Spectrum's Comments: Yep, Merri is smitten with Berek...
SUBJ: Montagne.... FROM: Kazroth 09/12/90 S#: 787080
listens intently to the interrogation put forth and the results He then turns to Jonathon...
"What have you heard about this 'Zombie Master' person? I've no recollection of him and, judging by the others' reactions, neither do they."
Montagne turns and addresses the rest of the party...
"Well we seem to have a minor dilemma here people. Shall we decide upon our course of action after we reach the fort? I for one would like to know more of this 'Zombie Master' before committing to a change of plans and remember..... We DO have a pledge to the crown to fulfill yet."
Spectrum's Comments: Will the Company take on the dreaded Zombie Master? Stay tuned!
