Sword of Doom #3
Within the meeting room of Gateway's Highmage, the discussions continue...
Finally, Montagne steps forward saying the he will become party leader if everyone will have him. (See last Post). Avoiding the various methods mentioned.
Before anyone can reply, Sharadin speaks.
"This group can hold their own with anyone when it comes to debating! Why not put aside your differences and give the lad a chance? As many of you have noted, you can always choose another person to lead the band. Give him the chance to fall flat on his face."
A wide smile follows that remark.
"Save your energy and anger for those who really deserve it, those who plot against the crown. And, young woman, get off of my table!"
At that moment, Captain Shea arrives. Shea is a non-descript man who gives the appearance of a seasoned warrior. He chats with Sharadin for a few minutes before turning to the group.
"I'd like to welcome you all into the Crowns employ. I am told that Sharadin told you about all the benefits, but I'll cover them anyway."
"Your group will have an expense account created in the groups name. 100 gold per man will be put into the account."
"In addition there are rewards given for discovery of information of importance to the Crown. There is also a Mission Board giving rewards for the performance of various tasks."
"In addition, if the group is willing, we have need of guards for a caravan going to Gerald's Fort two days hence. An additional 200 gold will be given if you decide to carry out this mission."
"Any questions?"
GM Notes:
The party has 1800 gp, or 2000 gp if the guard duty is chosen, to start with.
Obtaining 18 horses with standard riding gear, ie saddle, blanket, bit & bridle, saddlebags will cost you 1350 gp. That is the cheapest you will find.
Gerald's Fort is 2 days distant, 3 for caravans. Each additional town and village is 1 1/2 to 2 days distant.
At the moment the party, as a group, has food for 4 days. New supplies can be obtained at Gerald's Fort. Gerald's Fort is a small keep in control of the Crown. Waypoint is the ruins of a small town. Humanoids are known to inhabit the area. Information of Throm and Northending is sketchy at best.
Spectrum's Comments: Sharadin was just trying to push the selecting a spokesman process along a bit.
SUBJ: Merri (R) FROM: Modesty1 08/09/90 S#: 454847
Merri is silent, with wide-eyes during the debate over party leader. Never has she seen so many people arguing at the same time. She shrinks back into a corner. She much prefers battles, which have two, or at most, three sides.
When Sharadin proposes Montagne as party leader she speaks quietly, hoping she isn't out shouted "That sounds fine to me. But maybe, with this large a group two leaders, co-leaders, would be best." Merri smiles shyly at Montagne, if she catches his eye.
She will try to find Berek alone and ask him again, "However did you earn such a heroic name, Demonslayer? I'd love to hear the tale." She smiles, and waits patiently.
Merri will also try to talk to Belrek alone. She's never seen a gnome before, and is very curious. She'll talk to him very cautiously, not knowing his customs.
If everyone agrees to Montagne as party leader AND to buying the horses together, Merri will approach him when he is by himself or with few others.
"Um, sir? I have a large favor to ask the party. Having received training with another's bow, I have skill with a long bow but do not own one. Could I maybe borrow some money from out treasury to buy one? I'd pay it back, as soon as I'm able." She waits for a reply, trying to look serious.
SUBJ: *Ever* FROM: Ever 08/09/90 S#: 821130
Green eyes twinkling, Ever was waiting for Arathnasis to climb upon the table and remove his clothes. Lack of materialism always created a better ambiance for this sort of thing. When Sharadin made reference to Montagne as designated party leader, she heaved a sigh of disappointment, knowing that her powers would no longer be needed for divining the party's individual auras.
Non-surplussed she climbed down from the tabletop, and dragging her weapon and armor bag with her, she made her way steadily towards Montagne.
Step, drag. Step, drag. When she was almost directly in front of him, she set her cargo down with an audible thump and gave him the once over. Abstractedly blowing her bangs out of her face, she told him he would have to pass reckoning with a higher authority before she would grant leave for him to be the leader of the group.
With that comment she rummaged around in her sack and dug up a small whistle. She blew into it and waited.
Almost immediately, through the door bounded a medium sized black dog with brown markings. Loping to Ever's side, the dog sat at her feet and regarded Ever and Montagne.
Ever's gaze went from the dog to Montagne and back again. "Montagne, before you sits Fluff. Samantha Ann Fluff by name, a dog by nature, a guru in one of her past lives." This last bit Ever departed with in a conspiratorial air.
"Samantha, please meet Montagne deGallant, would be captain of this company. In your opinion, is he worthy of such a task?!" Ever waited patiently while Samantha eyed Montagne. A short bark, then a growl, then "Thump Thump" Samantha had given her acquiescence. This was good enough for Ever.
Emerald gaze met jade, and Ever smiled and said," We," A quick glance at Samantha, "Are at your command."
She then turned to the rest of the party again and asked, "Now... What am I to do about this armor?"
Spectrum's Comments: Ever was certainly a very unique character. Pity she didn't hang around longer. Samantha Ann Fluff indeed!
SUBJ: Arathnasis (R) FROM: Wildchilde 08/10/90 S#: 814580
"It appears that the job is yours for the time being sir" Arathnasis says with a sound of relief in his voice.
Now as for the taking of the guards job I think that we should take the job as we could all use the practical experience that it will afford us.
As for the horse sounds like a good deal to me, but I am willing to go along with what the rest of you decide.
SUBJ: ---===CARPATHIA===--- (R) FROM: Bad Girl5 08/10/90 S#: 462450
Carpathia, now very angry moves to the middle of the floor and stews for a bit. She still has no preference to whom the leadership goes. As she notices a leader has been chosen, she calms down a bit.
"Finally, a decision! This senseless bickering was getting us nowhere fast! We are supposed to be a group. We aren't supposed to be at others throats! On with the adventure!"
Spectrum's Comments: Obviously, Carpathia hasn't seen the Seekers in action before. This was much ado about nothing by comparison!
SUBJ: Omni (R) FROM: Omni Tuens 08/10/90 S#: 808637
Omni listens to Montagne's speech, then speaks.
"You appear to be of good enough character, sir. If you feel up to the challenge of leading 17 others, I will gladly follow."
After a brief sigh of relief, he turns in time to see Shea enter.
"Greetings Captain. It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Omni Tuens, a skilled swordsman eagerly seeking the honor of serving the Crown."
With this said, the warrior turns to the group discussion as a whole, and adds in his part:
"I also feel it would be best to accept this job as guards going to the fort. It will be a good opportunity to see how we work together, and test our leadership. As for mounts, I believe we should go with riding horses for all, as this is the most affordable option, and our funds will later be needed for food. I feel that it goes without saying that everyone is capable of riding a horse...but how many of you are good on horseback?"
With this said and done, the muscular human goes about smoothing out a crease he has detected in his elaborate clothing, and waiting for the others to agree to go as guards on the journey.
SUBJ: Eric (R) FROM: WitchDoc3 08/10/90 S#: 8541
"Well thank the Gods!"
::takes a sip of his drink then slams it back down on the table::
"I thought this senseless bickering would never cease! For a minute there, I thought we were going to stoop to aura readings! Now, not that is any worse than picking cards, but it just showed to what levels of indecision we had fallen to. Now, thanks to Montagne, we can get down to the reason we are all here. Adventuring! Unless someone can think of something better to do, I think we should ride with the caravan."
Having said my piece, I move over to talk to Montagne.
"I have to confess, I was not expecting such a huge party, I can't speak for the other priests in the group, but, I think we are seriously lacking in the amount of healing herbs etc, to properly care for such a large group. I just ask, if there is something left over once the important things are taken care of, we can budget something for this."
SUBJ: Balamar FROM: Deslock 08/10/90 S#: 44752
"Montagne's fine by me. As I said all along, we can change our minds later. No offence meant by that, Montagne, it's just that we don't know each other's abilities as yet. As to the other matters mentioned, I was planning on getting a horse anyway, so getting one at a group rate sounds good to me. We might as well take the guard job, too. It will give us a chance to work as a unit, something we sorely need. Since food seems to be a major issue, perhaps we should attempt a bulk purchase there as well."
SUBJ: Tristan FROM: FrankP25 08/10/90 S#: 444846
Sitting towards the back of the room, Tristan is waiting to get on with some adventuring.
"If I may add a comment, I say that we just go to where the action is at. I don't mind if we pick a leader now. Let's just get outta here."
After speaking, Tristan withdraws and waits patiently.
SUBJ: Argent... FROM: Enchantres 08/10/90 S#: 482774
Smiles slight as Montagne is named party leader.
'Congratulations, good sir. At last we can cease this pointless bickering and begin the quest.'
Argent can't think of anything else she needs for the trip other than food. When asked, she will say that she knows how to ride a horse.
'Guard duty? I spent half my life studying to begin my career as a sorceress with guard duty? -sigh- Very well, I can see that this is something we should do. I don't like it, but I'll do it.'
Spectrum's Comments: Just a touch of the Empress there. As mentioned last file, Argent served as a template for Angie.
SUBJ: FINALLY!! FROM: WhiteFlash 08/11/90 S#: 3244
"Well I for one am glad to see that this sinless arguing has ceased. Now we may get on to some more important issues like seeing this caravan safely to its destination. As for Montague, may you lead us well good sir."
With this he raises his mug, "If I may have the honor to give the last toast....... to the Quest of the Sword of Doom, may we not perish without Honor!"
He then sips his ale and sits amongst his comrades. "Oh and Omni yes I am a very adapt Horseman."
Spectrum's Comments: I'm sure Whiteflash meant senseless arguing over sinless arguing. Maybe.
SUBJ: Tralgo.... FROM: Knightwind 08/11/90 S#: 34019
In turn, Tralgo stands and offers his support to Montagne as group leader. As for riding a horse, well, I was raised on a farm of course I can ride a horse. I'll gladly accept a riding a horse from the party funds. I sure didn't plan on walkin to Karin's Fortress. And hey, looks like it's gonna take us 12-15 days to get there. We are definitely gonna need more FOOD.
Also, I heard Merri ask for a bow. If the good captain will allow me to use his facilities, I can make a bow that would be well suited to Merri.(we do have 2 days before the caravan leaves). I can also fashion arrows for any that have need of them. I'll just need someone else to fashion the arrowheads.

Perell looks up as Montagne appoints himself leader, and then waits to see what the others say. Once I see that most people are in favor of it, I shrug my shoulders, and gather up my cards.
"Ah well, so much for luck." I think to myself.
Then I lean back in my chair, put my feet up on the table, and relax as I watch Montagne deal with his new position and everyone's demands on his time already.
"Horses are a good idea. Food is a good idea. And being guards for the caravan is a good idea." I say when my chance to put my opinion in comes.
SUBJ: Montagne de Gallant... (R) FROM: Shaunnessy 08/15/90 S#: 840370
listens to Sharadin's near vote of confidence, chuckling lightly at his mention of possible failure. Montagne's attention is swiftly commandeered by the waifish girl as she summons her faithful advisor, Samantha Ann Fluff to make certain that he qualifies for the job. Once given the guru's OK others, presumably of their own free will, come forth to show their support for Montagne as well.
"I thank you all heartily for your faith in me and hope to provide us all with sufficient leadership to see us through many prosperous adventures."
Listening attentively to the already burgeoning load of party requests and needs he addresses everyone after all have spoken.
"Tralgo, I salute you! Your immediate volunteering of services is just the kind of teamwork that will get us through thick and thin every time. Balamar...your food purchasing idea is quite sound...you are in charge of pricing bulk food purchases while here in Gateway. Eric... I'd like you to accompany Balamar...you can look around for the necessary herbs while assisting him and you can look for the best offer for those plants."
Montagne pauses briefly as he surveys the large group before him.
"The next order of business is the name of our adventuring party..... several names have been suggested however only one has been seconded, that being 'Company of the Sword' so...unless there are any MAJOR objections...that shall be what we are collectively known as from this point onward. Lastly...we all seem to be in agreement over selecting the guard duty assignment so that will be The Company's first official job." Montagne smiles broadly as he speaks these last words then takes a deep sip from his wine goblet.

So where is that other drink you promised me? What do you mean you don't remember? You said that since I do such I fine job at making speeches, I could have another drink, I distinctly heard that. Gee whiz, don't tell me that you are drunk already. That will be the first thing I guess I will have to teach you, how to hold your liquor. Well hello, look who is coming over here. I think she may like you Berek, but don't worry, I'll help you out there too. Hi, Merri is it? My name's Belrek, and this is my good friend Sir Thomas of Blackrose. Sure I know he said that his name is Berek, but that's just a cover. See he is a world famous knight and if too many people recognize him, they try and send him out to kill every dragon around. And we all know how just going around killing dragons gets to be soooo boring after a while. So please don't let anyone else know his secret. I think we can trust you. You have never met a gnome before? I knew that just looking in your eyes. We gnomes can do that you know. We can tell a lot about a person from looking into there eyes. Sometimes we can even see into the future. Say what's that I see there now? Its you and Black..er Berek (quick wink) falling in love together. Awww and you even let me be in the wedding. Spectrum's Comments: Argent reels her catch in.
Sword of Doom #4
At last things seem to be falling to place for the adventurers now known as the Company of the Sword. Montagne De Gallant has been named the group leader.
Assuming that you have finished your business with Sharadin and Captain Shea, you depart the mages's residence on your various tasks.
Eighteen mounts are bought for the Company. That lowers your account to 650 gp.
Balamar and Eric were elected to gather food for the Company. After some haggling, Balamar has found the best deal on food that he can find. It will cost 50gp per day to feed the company and their mounts.
As I mentioned before, there is already enough food to last 4 days on the trip. Also, as caravan guards, the caravan will feed you. So, you'll be feed until you get to Gerald's Fort.
The best deal Eric can find on herbs is 1 gp per batch. Each batch can be used a maximum of 2 times before losing it's healing potency.
Tralgo has offered to make Merri a longbow. The cost for raw materials to fashion bows and arrows is 1/10th the cost of the finished product. Thus material for a longbow would cost 7.5 go. However, it takes a minimum of 1 week to fashion the bow.
After purchasing the mounts, Montagne is introduced to Trevor, a large man with bright red hair. He is the caravan master for this trip.
"Glad to have you along, boy-o! Should be an uneventful trip, but one never knows what lurks in the wilds."
The caravan consists of 30 horse-drawn wagons. When questioned about the cargo, Trevor will say that it is supplies and weapons for Gerald's Fort.
GM Notes:
I think I covered all your queries.
What I will need for the caravan trip is how the Company is going to be spread out over the train. I'll also need guard rotations for the nights. I'm assuming that you are going to post guards at night! ;)
Also, you need to wrap up your outfitting affairs in Gateway.
Argent has added Phantasmal Force and Shocking Grasp to her spell book.
Spectrum's Comments: Trevor might seem familiar. He was the same caravan master the Seekers rescued at the start of their game.

SUBJ: Johnathan FROM: Stretch611 08/17/90 S#: 114662
1) Forgive my absence for the last few posts; I have been in the mythical land of GEN CON. It was great.
2) As far as the name of our group goes doesn't it seem a bit dangerous to have the name SWORD in it. As soon as we approach the keep where it last was seen it will be obvious to any opposing group what we are after. I like the name::: Destroyers of Evil :::
3) My current spell book consists of
Read Magic
Detect Undead
Chill Touch
My character is not fully created yet because I was on vacation.
4) I feel that with this large group, the idea of breaking it into smaller groups is a good idea. Instead of four smaller adventuring groups, I think each group (Fighters, Clerics, Thieves, and Magic Users) should be split into groups with their own leaders. They report to the Party leader and follow his/her directives, but they are aware of the abilities of their group better that the party leader and use their powers to the greatest affect within the orders of the leader.
5) I think that we should have enough food for triple the amount of time needed to go from each town, I one town is destroyed or we get lost, we will need the food.
Well onward and I will inform the spell casters of my other spells as soon as I get them approved.
SUBJ: Montagne deGallant.... (R) FROM: Shaunnessy 08/18/90 S#: 828301
"Hail and well met friend Trevor!"
Montagne is quick to greet the fiery haired man and offers his hand to him.
"I am Montagne deGallant and we are the Company of the Sword...your escorts for this little excursion. Whatever awaits us on the road ahead we hope to be the equal of."
Montagne smiles brightly at the man then moves to engage the party in a strategy and tactics discussion.
"If anyone has a preference when it comes to night watch duty or wants a specific assignment for guarding the caravan please say so now. Also anyone wanting last minute provisions this is your last chance. As to the food supply, Balamar if you would, see to it that another six days worth of food are purchased.... we're fine as far as the fort and beyond however I doubt we will get a better pricing there as most necessities will surely be in high demand that far out into the frontier...Eric please assist Balamar and buy up two dozen of those healing packets while you are at it."
Later after having studied the map and notes Montagne points out that after Gerald's Fort the party will be on their own as there is little information known about the lands beyond the fort. Waypoint is a ruin already and goblin infested at times. Throm and Northending are both without any information available to the Company at this time.

SUBJ: Omni Tuens (R) FROM: Omni Tuens 08/19/90 S#: 813028
"Yes, I believe we definitely should split into smaller groups. From there, we can assign a certain shift of the watch at night to a certain group, and let them worry about making sure it is covered.
As far as our assignments when riding in the caravan, I believe we should have those more dexterous (aka rogues) among us ride a short distance ahead for scouting purposes. We should try to keep two to three fighters in the back, and an equal number in the front. The mages should stay near the middle, in order to be ready for quick deployment if ambush occurs.
Montagne, I think you should be near the about 3/4 of the way near the front, close enough to hear comments from the head wagon, but near enough the middle to give orders. Personally, I want to be at the front of things."

It takes a couple minutes for Berek to master his embarrassment enough to pry his eyes from the floor and acknowledge Merri.
"I..I must apologize for my friend. He has quite an imagination..."
Berek shoots Belrek a hot glare.
"And a very BIG mouth."
"Actually, I sort of inherited the title. It first belonged to my grandfather, as far as I know, the only member of my lineage to devote his life to the quest. How HE earned it is a very long story."
"Anyway, I was a bit feisty in my youth, always getting into trouble playing 'adventurer' and 'questing' through the village. People started referring to me a 'Little DemonSlayer' and I guess the name stuck."
Berek smiles and tries to look Merri in the eye without blushing again... unsuccessfully
"Eric, I have a few gold pieces if you'd like to build up a small emergency cache of healing herbs. It's not much, but you're welcome to it."
"Montagne...I'll volunteer for nightshift watch. I've always been at home in the dark, there's just something about the night air."

She hardly hears Berek's answer to her question, and barely recovers in time to respond. She converses a little more, with nervous glances to Belrek before moving away. She will smile when Berek's gaze meets hers.
When she is informed that Tralgo will be unable to make her a bow in time, Merri goes back to Montagne. "Um... I'd really like a bow before taking this caravan duty. If you think it will help the party as a whole, and there is sufficient money left, I guess I'd still like that loan."
She'll go back to Tralgo after she asks Montagne for the loan and tells him sincerely that she is sorry that he couldn't make her a bow, and when there is time she'd still like one. She'll replace whatever bow she has then with his.

Ever bowed her head in a subtle attempt to cover the yawn escaping from her. She looked down at Samantha and rolled her eyes. Fluff, in turn gave one of her omniscient doggy smirks, and laid down with her paws covering her head.
Ever smiled at Eric and said, "Me thinks I would like to help thee in a search for these herbs you desire. Whence we are upon the trail, I shall go forth upon bended knees and scour all the lands!" Realizing that she was about to wax poetic, Ever went silent, and nervously tugged on her braid.
At the point that she heard all the party coming up with Jonathon's 'novel' idea to break the party into smaller groups, she risked another glance at Fluff. They seemed to nod simultaneously, each thinking, "Yes, I recall Montagne had originally come up with such a division of labor, and yet it was turned aside before..."
Once again, Ever regarded the party leader, "Sir, *I* care not where you put Samantha and I in the caravan line, or in the watch shifts, however, Samantha wishes that you, (a) not put us near any of the "lowly mongrels sure to be involved in this caravan" and (b) make sure her watch shift is late because she "achieves her nirvana only at night time."

calmly takes in all requests and suggestions then turns his gaze towards the assembled group before him. "To begin, Merri, the loan as you call it is not necessary as the party fund is for us all. Therefore take the needed monies and purchase the bow that you desire. For those of you who saw my previously formatted subdivision --a post or two back-- the only difference shall be that Tralgo will take over White Flash's spot. Group A will ride point while Groups B, C and D will ride at the front, middle and back of the caravan in that order.
