Sword of Doom # 17
The Company returns to the graveyard, armed with a new plan of attack and more confident in their abilities.
The oil carried by the Company is gathered and given to Perrel. Schar casts Invisibility to Undead on Perrel. He rushes into the graveyard and begins the task of spreading the oil in a large circle. The minutes slowly go bye, but there are no signs of Zombies.
At last, Perrel finishes pouring the last of the oil. A creak is heard from the mausoleum and zombies begin to shuffle out. Perrel protects himself with a Sanctuary spell and retreats back to the Company.
The Company slowly advances into the graveyard, luring the zombies towards them and into the oil.
At last the zombies are in position and Omni throws a torch, igniting the oil.
You count 62 zombies in the horde approaching the Company. Around half of them are caught in the fire trap. Many keep on walking towards the Company ablaze. They finally fall to the ground, consumed by the flame.
The remaining zombies close. The clerics move to the front and invoke the power of their patrons. They succeed and twenty zombies shuffle off. Only 13 zombies remain from the horde of 62. These 13 go down fast under the Company's swords and arrows. The fire eventually dies down. The lack of trees or vegetation in the graveyard prevents it from spreading.
With the guards defeated, the Company approaches the ominous mausoleum. It is a square building, measure 40'. There is a door in the middle of each side. The building is one story high.
Gm Notes:
Ready go enter the lair of the Zombie Master??
Everyone is at maximum hit points and only the Invisibility to Undead and Sanctuary spells were used in the combat.
Spectrum's Comments: There's nothing like a good plan.

"Lets move company. Let us crush this abomination" With that I will move toward the mausoleum and look in the door.
SUBJ: Forward!!! (R) FROM: GrooToo 11/16/90 S#: 502596
Drawing my mace and whispering thanks to my deity (TYMORA) I follow Aranthesis to the door of the building watchful for any counter attack or other undead.

SUBJ: Omni FROM: Omni Tuens 11/16/90 S#: 409202
"The evil zombies fell as we had hoped they would. Now to exterminate their foul master. Guard yourselves carefully. He won't be alone."
With this Omni grins ironically, and holds his gigantic sword at the ready as he moves for the door into the mausoleum.
"One other thing....let's not take unnecessary risks. Jonathan, I realize you want the Zombie Master to fall, but lets do this as a team, not as a one man suicide run. All right?"
GM Notes:
At Omni's command, the Company proceeds into the mausoleum.
Beyond the double doors is a 10' square room. The only exit is a single door to the left and right.
(Regardless of what door you enter, you see this. All the entrances are identical.)
Each side door leads to a 15' almost square room. The corner of the room leading to the center of the mausoleum has been 'clipped off' and a door stands there. Another door leads out of the room to one of the other entrance halls.
The middle room of the mausoleum is octagonal in shape and 20' wide. A total of 4 doors lead into the room.
The room is almost devoid of features. The only thing of interest rests on a 10' square raised platform. This object is a large stone coffin. It is closed. Engraved on the lid is 'Thaddeus the 1st'.
Searching the rest of the building turns up nothing. It appears that only the zombies inhabited the mausoleum. The coffin is the only item of interest.
SUBJ: Tora FROM: Zynara 11/17/90 S#: 422255
Wiping the remains of the zombies from my Katana, I await my new orders from Perrel. While I am waiting, I say a prayer or two over the bodies of the zombies wishing them their final rest.
Spectrum's Comments: Actually that was Eliza. Tora was a character this user played in one of GM Falcon's games. When you run lots of characters sometimes you forget who you are!
SUBJ: Tristan FROM: FrankP25 11/17/90 S#: 404760
I suggest we check out the coffin. Whatever Omni thinks is best is fine, but I think that we should have someone powerful open the coffin while the clerics stand ready.
Note: I have Holy Word and Sunburst, which are both extremely powerful against the Undead. I have to use them I will.
SUBJ: Johnathan FROM: Stretch611 11/18/90 S#: 397079
A quick note, the Holy Word and Sunburst should only be used against those that can drain the life force from us. Any other creatures should be killed by sword and weaker spell. Only if we are in dire straights should they be used, for I am sure that more powerful creatures will always be ahead.
Also the undead are very silent, beware they can surprise even the best thief. Even my friend One-Hand would have trouble detecting them. I know my friend would like to be here, he was always curious about undead, but he is currently looking for some artifact or something.
Well let us check out the coffin. Perhaps there are spellbooks. My current spells are getting lonely without friends to join them.
SUBJ: Omni FROM: Omni Tuens 11/18/90 S#: 805460
"This doesn't feel right....it doesn't look right. Arathnasis, have your group check the doors to the outside...make sure there aren't any nasty surprises waiting for us out there. Its obvious the Zombie Master isn't here. That leaves us with the option of finding out what is in the coffin. Clerics...mages....Do you have any knowledge of what might be in this coffin? Or for that matter, what the name on it means?"
Omni listens to the advice that any might be able to give, then draws another torch and lights it.
"I'll open the coffin. Be ready to act upon what's in it....I don't want to be food for the undead."
Omni then opens the coffin with one hand; ready to slam it shut upon anything he doesn't want to see. If he can't get it shut, or sees something obviously hostile, he'll shove the torch at it.
SUBJ: Schar
I inspect the coffin, but cannot offer any useful information.
"Be careful, Omni."
I'll take my Holy Symbol in hand and be ready to invoke it's powers should undead be within the coffin.
SUBJ: Arathnasis FROM: Wildchilde 11/18/90 S#: 417908
I will order my group to check the outer doors and yell if anything seems amiss. I will then help omni lift the lid on the coffin. "Priests, be to the ready."
SUBJ: Perrel.... FROM: Count Kill 11/18/90 S#: 433432
While pouring the oil:
"Please, luck, stay with me." I say while moving as quickly as possible, while pouring the oil.
When the zombies start shuffling out of the mausoleum, I cast Sanctuary, and then get out of there.
"Feet, don't fail me now." I say as I move to the others. Then, I stand and watch the Zombie roast, ready to turn any that get through.
"Schar, I am once again indebted to you, as is the party. As it was your spell that made this cookout possible."
"Please accept my thanks once more."
Later, in the mausoleum:
I examine the outside of the coffin carefully for any traps, secret compartments, or such.
"Does anyone have any Holy Water? If so, give it to Omni, just in case there's undead in there at least he'll be ready."
When Omni opens the coffin, I'll stand right beside him, so I can turn it quickly if it attacks him. Or at least be able to cast Prot from Evil on Omni if the turn fails.
"Good Luck, hopefully it's just a big dust bunny in there." I say as Omni opens the coffin.
GM Notes:
Nothing unusual is noted outside. It is strangely quiet. No traps or secret compartments are located on the coffin.
Omni cautiously moves the stone lid to one side. (It is unhinged.)
A body lies within the coffin, completely wrapped in old, rotting bandages. It lies still... as death itself...
SUBJ: Drakkor FROM: Troll 3a 11/19/90 S#: 840541
I grip my sword tightly and prepare to swing at the coffin "I fear there IS something in there guys " with this I move to the head end of the coffin and raise my sword to attack.
SUBJ: Schar
"Again, no thanks are necessary, Perrel. I'm just doing my part to help out."
I return his gentle smile. I grin widely at his expectations of a giant dust bunny.
When the lid is pulled back and the body is found, I expect it to move but it does not.
"Can it be that the Zombie Master has already died?"
(No, I don't believe it either.)
I'll still remain ready to turn the thing.
SUBJ: Somebody's Mummy? (R) FROM: GrooToo 11/20/90 S#: 436512
Looking at the body in the sheet very carefully I look for anything out of the ordinary such as an old bloodstain or spike through the heart. I grip my holy symbol and look for a secret door through the coffin perhaps there is a latch. If the body should move I invoke the power of my deity.
Selarin Rylin
(Curious, very curious)
SUBJ: Eliza FROM: Zynara 11/20/90 S#: 464759
Seeing everyone crowding around the coffin, I stand back and watch the walls. I even pull Perrel over, "Isn't it odd that if you put the rooms together you end up with empty spaces between the rooms? We start with a square and end up with this strange shaped room in the center. Maybe there is a hidden set of stairs going down someplace in here. What are your orders?"
SUBJ: Argent FROM: Enchantres 11/20/90 S#: 819388
I too move away from the coffin. I want nothing to do with Mummies, no siree!
If it does move and I get the opportunity, I'll use a Magic Missile. I will wait until attempts to turn it have been tried.
Otherwise, I'll stay out of the way.
'I hope so there's a spell book or two around here. Wouldn't mind adding to my spell list at all!' :D
SUBJ: Omni FROM: Omni Tuens 11/21/90 S#: 23415
"Let's not let down our guard yet. We should keep a careful watch on the outer doors, as we are still in a very vulnerable position. You could be right, Eliza...let's check those walls for any openings. No one touch the body in the coffin yet...I don't think that's too good an idea. Don't take your eyes off of it, either."
SUBJ: Johnathan (R) FROM: Stretch611 11/21/90 S#: 527
The body seems to be safe, mummies tend to be very protective and guard thing very well, what kind of guard would just lie there when discovered. To fool us, no too risky. Since it did not move to attack I feel is truly dead. If necessary we should check under, around, and in the coffin for secret and hidden information.
To those who are good at the hidden, look for secret passages, hidden alcoves, and invisible thingies.
GM how are you handling spell components. Are we assumed to have them do we assume we have them unless they are unique or hard to find, or do we need to find and keep track of all spell components. I know several spells I plan on getting have the potential of spell components from this coffin. One spell needs the cloth from a dead body and another spell need mummy dust. Thus when we determine the exact status of the body I will get the required spell components for future use.
SUBJ: Perrel... FROM: Count Kill 11/21/90 S#: 398724
"Eliza, you have a good idea. Round up some of the elves that aren't doing anything, and check the walls and the floor for secret doors. There could be an underground tomb, under this place."
"Omni, might I suggest that we clerics try turning the body anyway. If it is only playing possum, and we do succeed in turning it, it will then have to move."
"If it doesn't move, at least we'll have a good idea that we can't turn it if it does turn out to be faking, and we can concentrate on other things to harm it."
"If it doesn't move, I say we let one of the fighters behead it, before we do any checking in that coffin."
"Eliza, if you do find a secret door, don't open it right away, let one of us with, shall we say "Street Skills", take a look at it first."
Sword of Doom # 18
Inside the mausoleum, the Company ponders what to do next. Before them in the coffin is a wrapped up body.
Selarin looks at the wrappings, but can see no bloodstains or punctures of any kind.
Those watching the outside note no activity.
Some of the group moves to search for any hidden areas in the Mausoleum. None are found. (I just didn't explain the lay out particular well. It does occupy the whole building.)
The clerics attempt to turn the body. At that, you get a response. The body sits, gets out of the coffin and walks away in a zombie-like gait.
With the body gone, you discover the bottom of the coffin is hollow. It is also untrapped.
Lifting it aside, you discover a set of stairs leading down into darkness...
GM Notes:
Jon, I do not require spell components. Which makes everyone's, especially mine, lives easier. :)
Throwing light down the stairs reveals that they go down 30' and enter into a room. Beyond that, you'll have to go down and find out!
SUBJ: Arathnasis FROM: Wildchilde 11/22/90 S#: 851142
I will start down the stair first sword drawn.
"Follow closely behind, and watch your step, I would hate to have any of you fall on top of me."
SUBJ: Downwards FROM: GrooToo 11/22/90 S#: 519899

SUBJ: Schar FROM: Schar 11/22/90 S#: 504550
I'll follow the men down the stairs. If any undead should appear, I'll invoke the power of Azrella to turn them away from us.
SUBJ: Omni FROM: Omni Tuens 11/23/90 S#: 64065
Omni nods as the others move down the stairs, and looks at the lit torch still in his hands. He then turns to anyone who might have an open hand, offering them the torch. Once he frees both hands, he'll draw his sword and also start down the stairs.
"Let's be careful...if you don't know for sure, assume the worst. Also, let's not bunch up...stay within sight of one another, but keep in clusters of two or three, not one big dozen. I don't want the entire party being surprised at once."
GM Notes:
Arathnasis leads the way down the stairs. He nears the bottom of the stairs and becomes aware of something floating in the room ahead.
Suddenly, there is a incredibly loud screech! It is coming from the object floating in the room.
Light flares from the object and you see that it is a skull floating in mid-air!
Beams of light are coming from its eyes, nose and mouth. All the while it is continuing to screech. A sound so loud that it could wake the dead....
SUBJ: Tristan FROM: FrankP25 11/24/90 S#: 422554
With Sword drawn, I will take out my Scroll (with Sunburst and Holy Word) and be prepared to use them, if we have to. This may not be that deadly, so I may not have to use it.
Guys, what do you think?
SUBJ: Eliza FROM: Zynara 11/25/90 S#: 17880
I wait for Perrel to give the order to go down. Once it is given, I will follow those ahead of me. In these closed quarters, I will put away my Katana and carry my nunchaku.
When the screeching begins, my first reaction is to rush forward but I continue to slowly advance so things don't get bunched up.
SUBJ: Arathnasis FROM: Wildchilde 11/25/90 S#: 42384
The piercing sound rings though the hall "Be prepared Company, Something tells me we wont be alone for long."
Arathnasis then takes a swing at the floating head with this longsword.
SUBJ: Drakkor FROM: Troll 3a 11/26/90 S#: 426995

SUBJ: Schar
"It's an alarm! We've been discovered!"
My grasp on Holy Symbol tightens, fearing that an army of undead will soon be upon use.
Once entering the room, I look around hoping to spot any incoming zombies. Upon seeing any, I'll immediately turn them.
"We should all get into the room. Fighting on the stairs would be difficult."
GM Notes:
Before you eyes, the shrieking skull disintegrates into dust. The annoying sound stops.
You enter the room and find it to be 15' wide and 25' long. A passage leads away to the left and to the right. The ceiling is 15' high.
Large shapes seem to be trudging towards you from the passageways.
At last they enter into the light.
You see 6 zombified hill giants coming towards you! Three from each passage.

Going Down the Stairs
Be careful, keep a sharp eye one anything strange. Remember undead do not have to move. They can stay in one place without moving for a long time. If it looks like a figure, it probably is.
Skull
Be ware, an alarm. Be on guard. Check out the skull but look around. I felt that the Zombie Master might know we are coming when the zombies are destroyed. Now I know he is aware of our presence.
Giants
Stepping back to a wall, checking quickly for any anomaly like secret or concealed door. Watching the battle to see how the clerics, fighters, and thieves handle the battle. Use Color Spray ONLY if party in trouble or to save a life.
Spellcaster
Conserve spells at all costs. Let the fighters, thieves, and clerics handle themselves. Help only in dire straits. We WILL need our spells later on.
Fighters Thieves Clerics
The job is yours; I and hopefully the other spellcasters are for backup. If need be we will uses spells, but if we run out then we are really useless. If the clerics turn a creature, try to kill it before it gets away. A turned creature can return and bother us again. Especially when we are low on spells hit points and trying to get out of here with our lives.
SUBJ: Omni FROM: Omni Tuens 11/26/90 S#: 845470
Once the dreadful shrieking stops, Omni takes one look at the situation and springs into action with his sword raised and a battle cry issuing forth from his throat. He quickly jumps in front of the left hand corridor and raises his tremendous sword up, quickly striking at the closest giant with little regard for his own safety.
"Quickly! Warriors! We must meet them before they can push forward into the room! If we have to face them three abroad, we're in trouble! I like our odds a lot better if only one of each three can get at us at once. Take a stand in front of the corridor, and do not yield your ground. Clerics, mages, bowmen. do whatever you can to aid us."
With this he quickly turns back to the fight, attacking again.
SUBJ: Tristan FROM: FrankP25 11/27/90 S#: 523979

(OHHHHHHHH)
Sword of Doom # 19
The Company has entered the lair of the Zombie Master. Locating stairs in the mausoleum, they descend into the darkness.
They enter into a room, triggering an alarm. A skull hovers in mid-air, spewing light and horrible screech. It disintegrates, but the damage has been done. Coming out of the side corridors, 6 hill giant zombies attack!
Jonathon and Argent seek safety along the far wall, while the rest of the Company engages the giants.
Schar and Selarin attempt to turn the zombies and drive off 2 of the large creatures.
Omni leads the charge against the zombies. His great sword scores two hits, but the giant gives no reaction. Merri and Drakkor lands punishing blows, but do little to slow the giants down.
The zombies strike back with their bare hands. Omni takes a solid hit, while Merri is driven to her knees. Berek and Ever are also wounded.
With Argent looking on, Jonathon searches for any concealed openings along the far wall. So far his search has been fruitless.
Arathnasis, Berek, Drakkor, and Eliza team up to down one of the giants. Omni, Schar, Perrel and Tristan do likewise.
Half of the gaints have fallen, but they still keep coming.
Merri, still on her knees, drives her blade deep into the giant before her. Her sword bites deep into the giants' belly, all the way up to the hilt.
The giant survives this attack and pounds her with his fists. There is the sicken sound of bones shattering and Merri goes down. Those who reach her, realize that there is nothing they can do. She was passed on to the next world.
The other giant stands back, as another skull flies over it and hovers before the Company. Amazingly enough, this one speaks!
"Who are you to invade my lair?! What do you want? Speak quickly, or my guards shall destroy you all!"

Color Spray the skull, and in my hate for all evil, try to position myself to get a giant zombie included in the attack.
Once sprayed, attack the skull with my staff until dead. Hopefully until the skull is dead and not me.
SUBJ: Tristan FROM: FrankP25 11/29/90 S#: 464707
I will attempt to TURN any of the zombies. I will then cast a clw on Berek, and anyone else who needs it. After that, I will attack one of the zombies.
I will not respond to the Skull.
SUBJ: Arathnasis FROM: Wildchilde 11/30/90 S#: 449785
I will take a torch and slam it into a Giant Zombies face. I will then attack with sword. "Somebody quiet that floating skull. Take care of the enemies in the area!"
SUBJ: Omni FROM: Omni Tuens 12/01/90 S#: 815630
When the remaining deceased hill giants cease fighting as the skull enters, Omni turns and addresses the floating shape.
"I am Omni Tuens of the Company of the Sword. We were chosen to defend a caravan upon its peaceful journey. We were assaulted by minions under your control, which we drove off. It has come to our attention that you endanger the surrounding settlements and the denizens of this forest. You are responsible for the deaths of countless innocents, and now you have slain our comrade. Your foul ways destroy nature in all its forms, and you must be stopped. For this, we have come. Now show yourself, and come meet your bane with honor."
Omni attempts to state this before the crazed Jonathon reaches the skull, hoping that someone manages to restrain the necromancer, if not for his safety, then for that of the party. (He'll do this himself if he can...or at least delay him). During the conversation, Omni keeps his sword up at guard, and doesn't let the massive zombies wander from his view. Depending on the skull's reaction, Omni may move to destroy it (if it appears ready to harm another party member) or listen to its response (if he doesn't think its a trap).
GM Notes:
The Skull seems to consider what has been said.
"I see. I also suppose that there is no talking you out of this? Didn't thing so. Pity. Oh well, I can use some new more zombies."
Jonathon freaks out and lets off a Color Spray. The giant zombie doesn't show any signs of effect. It just stands, rotting.
The Skull almost has a grin on its face.
"Sorry, boy-o. You'll have to do much better then that!"
It rises high into the air, almost to the ceiling.
"Let's see now... How shall I deal with you? Fireball? No, chars the flesh too much. Lightning Bolt? No, then I can't do a thing with the hair? Cloud Kill? Yes that one has possibilities..."
SUBJ: Eliza (R) FROM: Zynara 12/01/90 S#: 50514
Seeing the zombies hold off attacking while the zombie talks, I continue to attack. (These creatures need to be removed one way or another anyway. Might as well do it while they are being helpful.)
When the skull speaks up of doing fireballs, lightning bolts and cloud kills, I double my efforts to destroy the giants. One thought fills my mind, 'I hope Omni can turn that skull off before we end up as one of these undead.'
SUBJ: Tristan (R) FROM: FrankP25 12/01/90 S#: 457987
I will attack the zombies, in order to get rid of them as quickly as possible. If it looks like we will get in really serious trouble, I'll post again stating my actions. As for now, I will attack the zombies, and if anybody gets really hurt, I will cast a CLW on them.

Seeing the effects of my spell and the distance the skull has moved toward the ceiling, I come to my senses.
Upon hearing the selection of deaths offered, and the final decision by the skull, I desperately begin looking for cracks and holes in the ceiling.
"I don't think it is possible to cast spells through such a device but he may be nearby and casting so the effects can reach us. Beware"
If it looks as if the skull is about to cast a spell, or obvious holes used to pour oil or gasses into the room, I will rapidly head back up the stairs, otherwise will exam the last of the battle.
Seeing the affect of my color spray on the giants, if attacked will cast my chill touch and enter combat.
SUBJ: Omni FROM: Omni Tuens 12/02/90 S#: 826806
Omni looks up as the skull starts rising, and tries to quickly gauge the height to the ceiling. Then he takes a swing at the skull (jumping if necessary) in an attempt to knock it out of the sky. Obviously if gas pours into the room, he'll call for evacuation for the party's welfare. After trashing the skull, as we KNOW he will (right Mad?) Omni attacks the remaining giants in an attempt to destroy them before they can do more damage to the party.
"Let's take these abominations out now...and lets no one else get killed, all right?"
SUBJ: bullseye FROM: GrooToo 12/02/90 S#: 507963
