Sword of Doom # 14
At last a plan of attack has been reached. Mounting up, the Company rides out of the temple. The Priestess bids you all success and awaits your return.
You ride pass the trees with ease and are long gone before they can start to react. The ride passes all too quickly as you concentrate on the battle to come.
The sun is high in the sky when you arrive at the graveyard. It is as gloomy as the scouts reported.
Splitting into their sub-groups, the Company moves to the attack!
The group led by Arathnasis rides in first. (That includes Arathnasis, Berek, Tristan, Selarin and Merri.)
They ride into the graveyard, approaching the menacing mausoleum. Nearing the building, the doors creak open and zombies start to file out. The group counts about 30 of the creatures pursuing them.
Perrel leads his group to the right of Arathnasis. (This group includes Perrel, Ronin, Eliza, Schar and Drakkor.)
Omni leads the rest of the Company, Tralgo, Argent, Ever and Jonathon to the left.
Both groups ride down the trail toward the center of the graveyard, towards the mausoleum. They see the huge group of zombies approaching the first group.
The doors to the mausoleum remain shut.
However, both groups spot movement around them-- In the graveyard! Hands appear in the fresh gravesites. Then arms, heads and torso. Slowly the zombies claw their way out of their graves!
GM Notes:
Zombie breakdown:
Arathnasis groups faces 33 of the creatures coming out of the Mausoleum.
Perrel's group has zombies on either side of them, 16 to the left, 17 on the right.
Omni's group has 19 on the right and 10 on the left.
Also, due to circumstances beyond my control, i.e. work, I'll be forced to do the next post a day earlier then normal. Thus, I need a fast turnover this week! The post will close at 7 PM EST, Wednesday night!
Happy Halloween! Bwaa-haa-haa!!!

YUCK!!
'Undead to the left, undead to the right!'
Seeing the zombies rising out of their graves gives me goose bumps! Clutching my staff tightly, I wait for on to close in before striking. I'll save my Magic Missiles for now, using them only in desperation.
'Nice place to take a girl, Omni!'

I pull out my two-handed sword and I begin to slice up the zombies like a hot knife in butter!
Spectrum's Comments: Somehow that's just not the mental image I get of the situation... More like in a shower of gore and rotted flesh.
SUBJ: Tristan FROM: FrankP25 10/27/90 S#: 422859
First I'll try to turn all undead possible. Then I'll pull out my sword and start hacking. If we get in serious trouble, I'll post with new moves.

SUBJ: Schar FROM: Schar 10/28/90 S#: 411253
The healer grows more and more nervous as we approach the graveyard. The hairs on the back of her neck are sticking straight out as we approach the mausoleum!
Seeing the undead rise, I do my best to control my mount. Seizing the symbol around my neck, I hold it high in the air, pointing towards the greatest concentration of Zombies.
"By the power and glory of Azrella, I command you to be gone!"
Having completed my turning of undead, I'll draw my mace and fiercely engage the zombies, showing no fear, no granting any mercy upon these vile things.
SUBJ: Arathnasis FROM: Wildchilde 10/28/90 S#: 436316
I will fire arrows until the Zombies reach a melee distance at which time I will have at them with my long sword.
"Come on Company, lets us crush these foul abominations!!!"
SUBJ: "Yipes!" FROM: GM Kill 10/28/90 S#: 26431
I say aloud when the zombies start rising from their graves.
"Everyone, back to back, we don't want them sneaking up behind anyone!" I yell. "Drakkor, Schar, you two handle the ones on the right. Eliza, you're with me handling the ones on the left. Ronin, keep an eye on us four, try to keep any of them from sneaking up on us, while fighting what you can."
"Everyone be careful." I yell, while thinking to myself.."Gee, like that's not obvious?"
I'll try to turn as many as possible, and then cast a Sanctuary on myself, before joining the battle.
"Go for their legs, if possible. They'll have a harder time attacking us if they're stuck laying on the ground." I yell. "Plus, they might impede others behind them."
Thinking to myself:
"Gee, and it looked like it was going to be such a nice day."
SUBJ: Johnathan FROM: Stretch611 10/29/90 S#: 824656
Well I have always wondered about the susceptibility to Color Spray. I will start off by doing a quick evaluation to see which direction to send my color spray.
Then I will use my staff to bash the heads of zombies, using my horsemanship skills to the best ability. Keep as few zombies near me at one time.
If a retreat is called, follow the group, because I know we will be back.
If I get in severe mess, cast my Chill Touch and start attacking with my touch until it runs out and then back to crushing the skulls of the zombies.
Oops we do have horses in the battle don't we, if not my strategy stays the same minus the horse.
Take any opportunity to examine the zombies hit by the color spray. If any seem unaffected try engaging them in melee to see if they are affected in a less obvious way.
SUBJ: Omni (R) FROM: Omni Tuens 10/30/90 S#: 826614
"Quick! We're going for the mausoleum- Ever to my left, Tralgo to my right. We go straight down the middle. Argent, don't let anything behind us, and find something flammable. What we can't beat, we burn. That means be prepared to lob flame on the zombies, and if we get close enough, we'll set fire to the mausoleum if we can't get in. Good luck and defend yourselves!"
With this Omni raises his two-handed sword, gives a battle cry and heads in.
-------------
Let's assume we had the common sense to leave the horses behind. ;D
SUBJ: Eliza FROM: Zynara 10/30/90 S#: 431011
As I enter the graveyard, I have my Katana at the ready. When the limbs start coming out of the earth, I start saying a prayer for the deads' souls as I start hacking away at what ever comes out of the ground. When Perrel orders us into a circle, I drop back and continue to defend against the poor souls that are attacking us. If my katana doesn't appear to be working as well as it would against a regular person, I will switch to my nunchaku then to the broadsword if those don't work.
Sword of Doom # 15
The attack on the forces of the Zombie Master has begun! The Company has split into three sub-groups to battle this menace.
Arathnasis's group has gone if first, to lure the zombies out of the mausoleum.
Thirty-three of the creatures chase after them. After luring the zombies a short distance, the group turns to fight!
Tristan and Selarin attempt to turn the zombies. They succeed to a small degree as seven zombies move away from the group.
Arathnasis fires arrows at the zombies, wounding one. Merri draws her bastard sword and drives it deep into a zombie, but it still stands.
Berek, in an almost berserker rage, slices at the zombies with his great sword. He downs two of the enemy.
The zombies strike back, wounding Tristan and Arathnasis. Selarin goes down from the pounding of the zombies.
While Tristan drags Selarin to safety, the others protect then. Their blades each strike a zombie, slaying them.
Only Merri takes minor damage in the next zombie attack.
Hit Points:
| Arathnasis | 3 of 6 |
| Berek | 10 of 10 |
| Merri | 8 of 9 |
| Selarin | -3 of 5 |
| Tristan | 4 of 8 |
You are currently facing 21 zombies.
Omni's group close's tightly together as the zombies approaching. Picking up their pace, the move towards the mausoleum. Zombies move to thwart them.
Jonathon lets loose with a Color Spray, covering 6 zombies. Two of the zombies appear to be unaffected. However, four of the creatures appear to have been blinded.
Tralgo, Argent and Ever each wound an attacking Zombie, but fail to kill it.
Omni does slightly better with his 2-handed sword, nearly slice two of the creatures in half!
A zombie claws Tralgo for minor damage, while Jonathon goes down from a zombie attack with a crude club.
Ever goes to help Jonathon, casting a Cure Light Wounds on him. The others protect Ever.
Argent whacks a wounded zombie with her staff, crushing its skull!
Tralgo likewise finishes off the zombie he wounded earlier.
Omni misses an attacker.
The zombies attack en mass, wounding each member of the sub-group.
Party Status:
| Argent | 1 of 6 |
| Ever | 6 of 14 |
| Jonathon | 2 of 4 |
| Omni | 15 of 23 |
| Tralgo | 3 of 10 |
You are currently facing 25 zombies.
The remaining group of the Company comes in from the west side of the graveyard.
Seeing the zombies coming towards then, Schar and Perrel attempt to turn them.
Schar succeeds, sending ten of the zombies wandering off. Perrel meets with no success, and the zombies keep drawing nearer.
Eliza, Ronin and Drakkor draw their blades and attack!
Eliza's katana moves swiftly, slaying a pair of zombies. Ronin and Drakkor are just as accurate, each slaying a zombie.
A large group of zombies move to attack. Schar, Eliza and Drakkor take minor damage, but Perrel drops after being hit over the head by a tree limb.
Once more Eliza's and Drakkor's swords deal death to the attack zombies. Ronin and Schar protect the downed Perrel, Schar bashing a zombie into submission with her mace.
The zombies strike back, but fail to do any real damage to the Company.
Party Status:
| Drakkor | 7 of 11 |
| Eliza | 8 of 12 |
| Perrel | 0 of 5 |
| Ronin | 7 of 10 |
| Schar | 8 of 9 |
You are currently facing 16 zombies.
GM Notes:
Omni's and Perrel's group cannot see each other due to the mausoleum. Both groups can see Arathnasis's group and vice-versa.
The zombies move slowly and it would be possible to run away from them. Of course they would pursue and they don't get tired...
Perfect scenario for Halloween, no?
Spectrum's Comments: The Company severely underestimated what sort of opposition they were going to be facing in this graveyard. Even better, it happened on Halloween!

"Argh!" - Sound I make when hit with branch.
::Thump:: - Sound I make when my body hits the ground.
- Sound I make while unconscious. ;)
If I'm healed by either Schar or Ronin, I'll groan slightly, and then look about.
If there is an opening, I'll shout "Retreat through the opening. Eliza, Drakkor on either side of the opening, we'll move through the hole you leave, and then help you out. Then move as fast as possible out of here."
"This is a massacre, not a fight. If we stay, we'll be joining them soon."
If there isn't an opening, I'll shout..."When I make an opening, get through it, and then get out of here as fast as possible. If we stay here, we'll be massacred."
Then, I'll tumble past some zombies, between one zombie's legs would be ideal as then not as many can hit me, but I'll take what I can get.
If I get behind the zombies, I'll try to lure some of them away, by attacking them, or whatever else it takes. Hopefully enough of them that the group will have it's opportunity.
If I don't get healed, I'll just lay there peacefully. ;D
SUBJ: Omni FROM: Omni Tuens 11/02/90 S#: 823235
Omni takes his wound in stride, not liking it one bit (obviously) but prepared to continue charging ahead straight into the middle of the pack of zombies. However, a quick look around brings him back to reality- his group is in bad shape, and can't take much more of this. He brings his sword up to guard, and shouts to the group:
"Fall back! Get back out of the gate...we'll return another day, and claim victory upon this field. But for now...we make a strategic retreat. I'll be the last out of the gate. Now go!"
After this he continues hacking away at the nearest zombies, slowly backing up and taking care to protect the other members of the group. Omni is still determined that setting fire to something would be an excellent strategy against these sluggish yet flammable creatures, and will do so if given an opening. However, getting the group out is first priority. Once the group clears the gate and is safely out of the zombie's reach, Omni turns to the others and says:
"Get back to the Temple of Ehlonna as soon as possible. I'll meet you there shortly. First though, I have to make sure the other groups also fall back, or they'll get cut down without our support."
With this, Omni wishes the others luck and breaks off of the road, making his own trail while he tries to reach Arathnasis's group and avoid being intercepted by the zombies from the graveyard. (Needless to say, he's covering some ground...quick)
Once he reaches them, he'll engage the zombies, and spread the word to prepare to pull out, if they haven't begun to do so already. Looking up, he notes that Perrel's group is doing the same.

The healers' features turn grim at the sight of the small army of undead attacking us.
Calling on the power of her god, many of the dreaded creatures flee from the holy light.
The remaining creatures surround and attack! The magic mace finds it's mark, downing another of the zombies. Then I notice Perrel on the ground.
I bend down next to him, reciting the words for a CLW.
"Perrel, are you alright? This is hardly the time to be resting!" ;)
"By all means, let us fall back and regroup! It may have been a mistake to split the group up as we did."
I race with the rest of my group towards the gates of this evil graveyard. I'll attempt to turn any new appearing zombies that try to stop us.
"This is a great task we are faced with. My we have the strength to succeed next time."
SUBJ: Owch!!!! (R) FROM: GrooToo 11/03/90 S#: 451212

Berek laughs as his sword cuts down one zombie, then another.
"HAHAHA! BACK, FOUL CREATURES!! BACK TO THE BLACK DEPTHS THAT SPAWN YOU!!!"
When Merri is struck by a zombie, Berek moves to her side to protect her with slashing cold steel.
Young Berek reacts with a bit of indignity at the order to retreat (provided Omni makes it to our group, of course. ;> )
"RETREAT!?! That's it?!? Flee back to the temple with our tails between our legs?!? The battle goes poorly, but we may still win the day! One on one, we're more than a match for these devils; it's the weight of their number that's crushing us! May I suggest, good Omni, a partial retreat...withdraw to a distance and wait. Strike fast and furious as the first of their number draw near and pull back again before they can overwhelm us. Throughout the battle the injured can fall back, or be taken, to the rear of the battlefield to be healed by cleric's spell of mystic herb while the freshly healed takes his place in battle. In this way we can whittle their number while replenishing our own strength."
"Granted, it's a risky venture, but no more so than a full retreat! Though we are faster than these undead, they will not tire while we already grow weary. And what will we do if we reach the gate only to find the undead trees we outdistanced earlier waiting for us??"
Spectrum's Comments: Can you say beserker?

With that Arathnasis will begin to move his group back. Moving as fast as possible with the wounded, if any zombies get close he will move to quickly engage the beast and then retreat. SUBJ: Johnathan FROM: Stretch611 11/04/90 S#: 825259
I will make a hasty retreat, I gain much from this battle, a health respect for zombies and knowledge of my spells seem to be effective vs. the lesser undead. This will aid us greatly in our future jaunts.
Yelling to Berek, great plan, similar to what I suggested, but better to do when full strength then as an change in plans due to wounded, how many clerics do you think we have. Fall back and be healed. Fall back or die.

"As the shepherd said to his sheep, let's get the flock out of here!" I shout to everyone, while performing actions as posted before.
I, like Schar, will attempt to turn any undead I haven't encountered before, while getting out of there.
"Talk strategy later, let's just get our of here now!" I shout when I hear some folks talking about what we should do. "Sheesh, some of the most long winded fighters I've ever seen."
SUBJ: Eliza FROM: Zynara 11/05/90 S#: 422685
Eliza quickly jumps to the attack as the zombies come within fighting range. As each zombie falls you can hear her say, "May your god grant you your final rest."
When my leader goes down, I immediately shield him to the best of my abilities being careful not to injure Schar as she tries to get him up and moving.
When Perrel gives the order for retreat, I defend the group as best as I can. Once they are free, I will run as fast as I can to give assistance to the central group if they need it, otherwise I will follow any orders given by Perrel.
If and only if we are totally surrounded and unable to get out easily, I will trust to the slowness of the zombies and ignore any major defense and work specifically on attacking to clear us a path. The only thought running through my mind, 'My life is nothing if I fail to get my group out as ordered.'
Sword of Doom # 16
The assault against the Zombie Master has not gone the way the Company had hoped it would.
Faced with a small army of Zombies, the Company bravely fought its way towards the mausoleum. The priests' turn those zombies they could and the fighters did their part and send many zombies to their final rest.
However, the damage taken by the Company has great. Several members have gone down wounded.
Realizing that to continue attacking would be futile, Omni calls for a 'strategic retreat'.
The three sub-groups disengage without much injury. The zombies slowly follow, but lose ground quickly.
Returning to their mounts, the Company rides back to the Temple.
The Priestess greets you upon return. She offers to heal those wounded. Later, she listens as the attack is described to her.
"Perhaps it was not a total loss. At least now you have an idea what you are up against and can plan accordingly."
Later, when the mages study their new magicks, several of them discover that they can learn more spells! Likewise, some of the clerics find their patron allowing them more spells then before. Many of the fighters seem more confident in their battle prowess then ever before.

I have carefully analyzed the attack and have several suggestions.
1) For my personal benefit, the zombies seem susceptible to color spray, thus I shall memorize Chill Touch X 1, Color Spray X 2
2) The Zombie Master now knows we are here; I shall put forth my previous suggestion. Let us take several days and slowly whittle down the force of zombies. I doubt that the zombie master will be able to replenish all of them and we will be able to get in once most are dead. Also if I were him, I would not waste the spells on front line cannon fodder. I feel he will not make an effort replacing them. Why waste the spells?
Again I will concede to the wishes of the party but spending a few days killing these creatures will be days well spent.
SUBJ: Omni (R) FROM: Omni Tuens 11/08/90 S#: 40393
(If anyone sees this Omno guy, congratulate him for reaching level 4 for me)
Omni returns to the temple, seething with frustration. He obviously is frustrated that the plan- the one he chose- failed. When he finally has all the others gathered back in one place, with all healthy, he reveals his thoughts.
"I'm sorry that I let all of you down. I should have realized their would be more zombies hidden inside the graveyard....the defeat was my fault. But I refuse to give up- we must destroy that evil which infests this fair forest. We will keep attacking, and we will defeat the Zombie Master.
As I see it, we know have two logical courses of action. One is to keep whittling away at the number of zombies, draining the forces guarding the graveyard. The other choice is to make our move now. We can use our clerics...our now more powerful clerics...to turn away the Zombie Master's foul guardians. We can then use our mages, and the content of Tristan's scrolls to disperse the remaining zombies. Our fighters will then finish the job, and raid the mausoleum. Tristan, I feel you should probably share with the rest of us the extent of the power of the scrolls, if you don't mind. And now, I ask of you, Company of the Sword, to pick your fate. Do we assault the mausoleum by force, or wipe out the zombies slowly?"
Omni then thanks the priestess once more for her hospitality and help, and examines his sword and armor, making sure the battle didn't damage them. He then makes sure that none of the members of the company are troubled after the disturbing defeat at the hands of the undead.
SUBJ: Tristan FROM: FrankP25 11/09/90 S#: 441638
Upon reaching the temple I will pray to Ehlonna for the good fortune that has befallen me. I will memorize CLW*2.
"I've got a scroll that has Sunburst*2 and Holy Word. Sun Burst, as some of you may not know, is a spell that will create a great burst of light that severely damages the undead without affecting party members. Most of you know what Holy Word is; it simply will affect all undead, etc. If there are any questions, please feel free to ask."
After that I will simply rest and recuperate.
FrankP25
SUBJ: Schar
Unlike most of the Company, the healer is not discouraged.
"Omni you are being to hard on yourself. None of us here knew the true extent of the Zombie Masters power. I applaud your decision to withdraw when it came. It probably saved several lives. Consider our attack to be a learning experience. We have learned not to take things for granted. I said before this will be a long battle not won in one attack. We have learned from our attack. We will return with new eyes, now knowing fully what defenses the Zombie Master has. Now we have the advantage. We must put it to use. I submit to you all that we must deal with the zombie guards in a fashion as not to weaken the company."
"I have several ideas on how to accomplish our goal. First, my patron grants me access to a spell that renders 1 person invisible to undead eyes. The effect lasts for only a few minutes, but much could be accomplished in time. For example, our fleetest scout could set up a fire trap for the zombies. Pour oil on the ground in a large circle, lure the zombies into the circle and then light the oil. Zombies may be fearless, tireless guards, but are easy to outwit. This method would destroy the zombies at virtually no risk to the Company."
"Another option came to me from Tristan's explanation of the Sunburst on his scroll. Again, we could lure the zombies out and let ourselves be surrounded. Then we could cast the Sunburst. From what I know of the spell, it should destroy them all within range. The Priestess was most wise in what spells she gave us on the scroll. I would have to assume that the Holy Word is for the Zombie Masters consort. She spoke of it being a being from the lower planes."
"Let us not forget, that getting past the zombies is only part of this battle. We do not know what lies within the mausoleum. I fear that the worst may lie ahead."
I then step back, waiting for response from the Company.
Unless requested otherwise, I pray for the following spells: CLW*3, Invisibility to Undead, Barkskin, Aid, & Chant.
Spectrum's Comments: Schar always was an eloquent speaker.

"Omni, I am as much to blame in our defeat as yourself, as it is my plan which failed, but enough talk of failure! We need to attack again as soon as everyone is healed and has their spells memorized. Also this time we should make use of the Holy Water that was given to us. Here may be a plan that may or may not help us, I will give it and leave it for you to decide. What I see is dividing up temporarily one group to distract the Zombies the other I will get to in a second. The first group distracts the Zombies and then starts to slowly pull back to a predetermined place. That just happens to be covered in oil (We will have to supply that) The second group which would be hiding the trees would then come out after they pass and surround them from the back forming a circle around the beasties. Someone then lights the oil and poof, roast Zombies. Tis an Idea that may or may not work one thing is for certain we should use flame against these creatures also. We need every advantage we can get"

I will listen closely to the war council but not put any input unless directed to do so. (So far I see no problems with whittling away but if we do a direct charge, we may be asking for more trouble.)
Once the discussions are done, I will go practice with all my weapons. I will also ask around the group to see if anyone has any skill in working metal. (Blacksmithing, Armor or Weaponsmithing) If they do, I ask them to show me what they know with what is available. If no one knows any of these skills, I will just continue my practice with my weapons.

"Schar, if you're sure your spell will affect someone without leaving them vulnerable, we'll try and set up a fire trap, then bait the zombies into it. Any that survive the traps our clerics can turn (hopefully) or our fighters can overpower. Then we'll move for the mausoleum. The spells given to us by the priestess can be our safety for the fight; if we need it, use it, but hopefully we can save it for the fight inside the mausoleum. Let's try igniting the trap by other means first. Anyone have anything to add to that plan?"

"Seems like a fine plan to me." I say while sitting there playing solitaire. "But, it looks like we're going to need a volunteer to do it, so I guess that'll be me."
"I'm the lightest, and I have spells to protect myself if I'm not finished by the time the spell ends."
"If someone else wants to go, fine, but do any of you trust luck as much as I do?" I say with a sly smile, while flashing an ace that just seems to appear in my hands.
If I'm going into spread the oil, I'll pray for Sanctuary and Protection from Evil, if not, I'll pray for Prot. from Evil and CLW.
Once the decision is made, I'll put away my cards, stand and walk over to Schar.
"Madame..." I say before scooping up her hand, kissing it's back, and bowing humbly. "I am indebted to you for your help earlier, when I was wounded by those undead scoundrels."
"Please accept my thanks for your generous and kind help. This party would not be half as charming without your presence."

"As I stated, the spell will last for about 5 minutes. That should be plenty of time to carry out the plan."
I blush slight as Perrel kisses my hand.
"Please, good sir, I'm sure you have done the same if our fortunes were reversed. I was happy to be of service."
I then move off to rest. I feel a little flushed and keep moving my hair away from my face. I sit with a dreamy look on my face.

"Madame, you are indeed correct. I would indeed do the same for you, but mainly...because I hate to see beautiful damsels in distress."
"I am indebted to you for your aid though, and if ever there is a way I can assist you, please feel free to call upon my help at any time."
I bow deeply as she moves to the others, and give her a warm smile as I do.
If we follow Schar's plan, I'll ask her how long the spell will last. At the first sign that it's not working, I'll cast a Protection from Evil, and then a Sanctuary if needed, and then turn them as a last resort.
I'll try to set it up as Schar and Omni specify, to the best of my ability.

After hearing what Schar's plan is "That sound like a good plan Omni, I only have one question who will put out the fire after it has served it's purpose? I cannot stand by and watch as the fire burns the surrounding area. Who know it could become bigger than we expect."
Overhearing Perell, I want until he is done. "Hey, Perrel would you have kissed my hand if I had healed you? :)"
Spectrum's Comments: And that, boys and girls, was the start of the Schar/Perrel relationship. Actually, I think she was the first woman to pay serious attention to our lighthearted swashbuckler. Next time, the Company returns to the graveyard of the Zombie Master. Will they fare better this time around? Stay tuned!
