The Frontier #76
With the threat of the Gatherer of Souls over for the moment, the Seekers return to the surface of Gateway.
Thundron gives the sarcophagus a good hit with his sword. However, swords usually make poor hammers and the blade shatters upon contact.
Proceeding through the tunnels, you reach the underground lake before too long. Climbing up the rope you come out of a well in Gateway.
It is late at night by now. (It was after dusk when this whole thing started.) You decide to approach the council in the morning.
Most of you travel to the Seekers mansion. In the past, the mansion district were the homes of the wealthy of Gateway. Once the Crown took over the city, they have used them to house adventuring companies.
The mansion was in poor shape when the group first received it. Since then, they have accumulated much wealth and have made the mansion more comfortable. They just recently added servants. There is enough room for each Seeker to have his own private room.
Early next morning, Validar, Padraig and Armon (and any others who wish to go along) go to see the council.
After a short wait, you are led into Council Chambers. At the far end of the chambers, seated behind a long table are four people, three men and a woman.
In the center is General Logan, the highest authority in Gateway. The General is a large man with bright red hair.
On his right is the High Mage of Gateway, Sharadin. Sharadin is not what you would expect a mage to look like. He is tall and muscular, someone more expected to swing a sword, not sling spells.
On the left side is the High Priests of Gateway. Selinda of Azrella and Durn of Heironeous. Selinda has a look of calm and tranquility. This is not shared by her counterpart, Durn. He looks like the nervous type.
"Good morning, Validar and friends. What can we do for you on this fine day?"
GM Notes:
Again, those who wished to go along to the council may do so. If not, then post where you are and what, if anything, you are doing there.
I'll be on vacation next week, so there won't be a new post for two weeks. I'll be on enough to field questions that may be posted.

SUBJ: Geez what happened to me!!! ;) FROM: Vonte 01/25/91 S#: 842314
I thought I was a party member, (hopefully it was just an oversight!)
After getting directions from Validar, and the last of the farewells, I head for the nearest forested area.
After finding a suitable area to camp, I will unload my gear and start a campfire in which to prepare a meal for both Thundron (and his wolf), and myself.
As the evening goes on I will ask Thundron to fill me in on all the scoops about the party and it's members.
After conversation starts to taper off, I will prepare for prayer (setting out candles, incense, holy symbol, etc.) I will ask Ehlonna for guidance and the replenishing of spells (CLW), IF I receive this I will see if Thundron needs it (if not I will cast it upon myself), and start the process again in hopes of receiving my blessings again from Ehlonna (CLW).
Spectrum's Comments: I wonder if that was a Freudian Slip not listing Vonte on the roster.

Claudius/Frontier Spell research attempts:
Level 1- Choose one, in order of preference: Wall of Fog, Cantrip.
Level 2- Choose three, in order of preference: Detect Evil, Invisibility, Mirror Image Knock, Know Alignment, Wizard Lock
SUBJ: Claudius.. (R) FROM: GM Falcon 01/25/91 S#: 832648
Claudius is torn between the chance to root through Gateway's libraries some more, or help in the meeting with the council. Strangely enough, though perhaps not so strangely to those who know him well enough, the library wins.
All but purring at the books, he'll begin to read. On a hunch, he'll start with subjects like Gateway's history under the Keln Empire, the construction and layout of Gateway's sewer system, and so on...looking for clues on the Gatherer, or perhaps a cryptic warning from another scholar long dead...
And, a spell or two when he needs a break from trying to understand what the Kelns tried to say.
SUBJ: Mercy FROM: Mastiff1 01/25/91 S#: 428119
Mercy will accept the Hospitality of the Seekers. "It will help me to get acquainted with you all."
Mercy will ask to accompany Claudius to the Library. "I am a Cleric of Mortidus, wisdom and knowledge are my bread and water."
Spectrum's Comments: Mortidus was another deity of my own design, like Azrella. As noted above, his province was wisdom, knowledge, and common sense. In fact, Mercy gave his mace the name 'Common Sense', as he liked to pound that into his foes. :D
SUBJ: Armon FROM: Omni Tuens 01/28/91 S#: 833089
(Hey! Waitaminute!!!! *I* will handle the Armon jokes here!!!) ;D
The bard cleans himself up, making sure his bright cloak is as obvious as ever and carrying his mandolin along on the trip to the council. When they step before the assembled leaders, he'll suppress his urge to speak out, instead letting Validar do the talking. However, Armon won't even THINK about hesitating to answer any questions, and will quickly stick a word in if he feels any omissions are being made. Afterwards, if time allows, the young Flamehilt will wander over to the library to see what the scholars are up to. Then on the way back to the mansion (once more as time permits) he'll wander into a tavern (or two), and try to find out the place the city 'higher-ups' go to socialize. If he has any luck in this regard, Armon makes time to attempt to reach this place.
SUBJ: Padraig (R) FROM: GM Shifty 01/28/91 S#: 813181
::quietly leaning on his staff waiting for Validar to explain things to the council and make introductions::
When Validar (finally) introduces Pad to the council, Pad will bow and say, "Greetings, lords and lady, I am Padraig, a travelling wizard. I seem to have been pulled far from my home by a magical accident. My newfound companions seemed ignorant of this city's position in relationship to my own city. I was hoping one of you might be able to supply me with this information."
Pad will then proceed to ask if they've ever heard of the various people, places, and events that he had previously mentioned to the Seekers.
SUBJ: Arocken FROM: Wildchilde 01/29/91 S#: 453382
Not really caring for politics, Arocken will head out into the wooded areas surrounding Gateway just to get away and maybe do a little hunting. And quite possibly to meet some of the peasant folk (preferably the gals!!:) )
SUBJ: Stephanie
Steph will not go to meet the council. Instead she will sleep in and not rise until nearly noon. :D
I'll spend the afternoon practicing my weapon skills. First with Longsword and then later target practice with my bow.
GM Notes:
The library in question, Claudius, Mercy and Armon, is part of the High-Mage's private mansion. One whole wing has been converted into a library. Arriving at the door to the house, you are all greeted by an attractive young woman with blonde hair and blue eyes. Claudius recognizes her as Terry, (or is it Sherry?) and she allows you all access to the library.
"Father is involved at a council meeting. Just give a holler if you need any help."
At the meeting itself, the Council has not heard of the places Padraig mentioned either.
"Perhaps my library may hold more information on those places", Sharadin adds. "I shall investigate it this evening. As for the Drow menace, and as far as I know, there has not been a true drow sighting in this area for decades now. Most puzzling. Magic is a tricky thing. Are you sure this is even your home world?"
SUBJ: Padraig FROM: GM Shifty 01/29/91 S#: 805644
Talking with Sharadin, "I am beginning to wonder myself if this is my world. No one knows of anything that happened on my world, though the events had repercussions far from my own city. There is also the fact that I have not heard the name of a single god that was familiar to me. But, I never paid much attention to world of clerics and their gods."
"However, since I am here, I've decided to offer my services to the Seekers for a while. A little adventure would be a pleasant change. Without Baulgruel stirring things up, life had become rather boring."
SUBJ: GM Notes: FROM: GM Mad 01/30/91 S#: 828751
Sharadin talking to Padraig:
"Deities tend to change names as one crosses the land. The same god may have several names on the same world. Are you familiar with constellations? These are imaginary pictures formed by connect points of light in the sky with lines. Some of these lights are arranged to resemble people or beasts. There is one constellation in the sky that appears to resemble a hunter. Another, a great ladle. Perhaps we can truly determine whether this is your world or not by the sky."
Spectrum's Comments: That's another of the little wrinkles in my game world. The main grouping of Gods were worshipped differently in different places. The same deity may have several other names across the world. It explains why there can be so many different Goddess of Magic, for instance, just the same one operating under different aliases.
SUBJ: VALIDAR (R) FROM: Bl Panther 01/30/91 S#: 429592
Validar will return to the mansion to change his clothing before leading Padraig and Armon to the Council for a meeting. Once at the Council's meeting room, Validar will greet the three heads of Gateway.
"Greetings, General Logan, Selinda, Sharadin, and Durn. Allow me to introduce Armon and Padraig. They are recently joined members of the Seekers."
"I trust everything has been well and thankfully, relatively quiet in the past weeks since the siege of the Hextorites and their goblinoid horde. However, this visit is not a simple matter of discussing politics. We have just recently returned from the vast tunnel system which exists below the streets of Gateway."
"Our impromptu expedition was begun due to the kidnapping of one of our mansion's servants. Two of them were at the well in the mansion district when something rose out of the shaft and grabbed the boy. His companion ran back to us with the story of his capture and we proceeded to begin a quick of the search of the tunnels from the cavern at the bottom of the well shaft. It was during this time that we added Armon, Padraig, and a few others to our number."
"After splitting up and travelling the many passages which radiated out from the central cavern, I came upon an interesting sight. A few moments later, some of the others met up with my progress there. In fact, all of the tunnels led to a small collection of cavernous rooms. The entrance to this area was marked by a warning in the Keln language saying that this was the resting place of the Gatherer of Souls. Apparently, the trail of our servant led through this area and into the complex of rough underground chambers."
"The barrier that was erected here by the Keln settlers, who previously occupied Gateway, was burst outward. We proceeded to investigate and came into contact with this Gatherer of Souls. It seemed to be drawing power from a series of pillars and there was bluish energy all about the armored construct."
"We approached the Gatherer and it attacked, firing this energy from its eyes. The true effect of this act is mere speculation on our part. The pillar that the energy contacted was gone from the scene as if it had never been. A few of the Seekers assumed this to be a disintegration ray and attacked. The other groups managed to reach this room by the other tunnels. In any case, the creature was clearly hostile and we defeated it. Or so we thought."
"Our servant was thankfully uninjured and is recovering at our mansion. However, the armor was overcome by a blue mist and it suddenly appeared in a stone sarcophagus nearby. While a few of us examined the armor, we read the writings on the pillars and also more on the wall of the chamber. The Keln writing was a recount of their encounter with the Gatherer."
SUBJ: VALIDAR (cont.) FROM: Bl Panther 01/30/91 S#: 416084
"Basically, the Kelnar settlers 'activated' this Elder construct which they dubbed the Gatherer of Souls. After defeating it, it lay motionless much like our initial confrontation with it. After trying to destroy it, it came back to life, in a sense. They defeated it a second time and unsure of how to actually destroy it, they simply sealed it up and left the warnings behind. They also believed that the blue energy shot from the Gatherer's eyes was a disintegrator."
"Apparently, however, the Gatherer was disturbed by a company of goblins which had attempted to use those tunnels in the recent seige. There were numerous goblin corpses around."
"The writing in Elder on the pillars themselves, however, told a slightly different story. The referred to this thing as 'the Seeker of the Chosen', whatever that refers to. From this, we believe that the energy may be some sort of teleportation or something similar, but have no way of knowing for certain. This is mere conjecture on our part. The ways of the Elders have always been shrouded in mystery, as you all know."
"Regardless, Finrod managed to reawaken the Gatherer/Seeker, much the same way as the Keln settlers before. We battled the armored construct again and again our might prevailed. This time, the armor lay damaged and after a few more well placed blows was quite mangled. The bluish mist never did return while we remained, but what has happened since we left is unknown."
"We felt that as there may be an unknown danger still involved with this Elder artifact, we should inform you of our encounter in detail. Perhaps you know of other information that may fill some of the holes in our theories concerning this place. Or there may be forgotten writings somewhere that you may have access to that would explain some of this mystery. Also, there is some concern as to what else may lay undisturbed below us. A thorough examination of the tunnel complex may be in order."
"In any case, I did not choose to make any hasty decisions and therefore decided to consult with you and place the decision in your hands where it rightly belongs. There are not many pertinent details that I left out of my tale, I believe."
"What course of action do you propose with this situation?"

Hi, It's me, Finrod's driving life force.
Some of you may have wondered what's been up with me.
Well, I got called to active duty, but have been left sitting stateside.
I sent home for my disk, and am posting from a relative's computer.
For the full scoop, check one board up, in the latest LEGENDS post for detailed description of my goings-on.
Suffice it to say, I am still hoping to get my chance to fight, and so might not be able to post again.
If I remain here stateside much longer, Finrod will begin posting again. In the meantime, you can assume that whatever Steph is doing, Fin is by her side, and when she wants to be away from him, he will hang out with Claude at the Library or Val in his political maneuverings.
Love to all;

:* for Steph ;)
Spectrum's Comments: A real life explanaton from Sgt. He would disappear for weeks at a time only to return. Eventually, he just never returned. Considering that he was in the military and this was around the time of Desert Storm, we always wondered what happened to him.
SUBJ: Claudius.. FROM: GM Falcon 02/01/91 S#: 476204
Claudius continues his studies, nodding coolly at (the cleric) who asks to join him. Not coldly, simply long distracted.
He finds a phrase in a long lost tome, but unfortunately disregards it (for the moment, at least). He continues his efforts by studying a map of the Gateway sewer system, then studying several other books.
He finally nods to himself and closes the last tome a bit loudly.
"Come, let's get some lunch.", he says amicably to the cleric, "Then we can come back and find someone to discuss metaphysics with." For one reason or another, he looks as if nothing would please him more..
SUBJ: Home Body FROM: Zynara 02/02/91 S#: 425344
Since it is late when we arrive, I take Blod up to the bath and get us both cleaned up. Once clean I lock our doors and we don't come out till late the next morning.
When I do come out and find that not everyone is going to the council, I decide there are other things for me to do. I go and learn my mending spell and repair the damage to the clothes we had on when we rescued the boy. I also help with the house cleaning and cooking.
In the afternoon, I go look at the library the others went to in the morning. Maybe I can find a spell or two to add to my own book. I am also looking for information on any magic that can be make me more powerful (Increase my intelligence, ect.)
The Frontier #77
At the Council Meeting, the Council members listen to Validar's tale.
"You've acted wisely in this matter, Validar", the general replies. "What do the rest of you make of the 'Seeker'?"
That particular question is put to the other council members.
"As they suggested, it appears to be a magical construct of some type", Sharadin answers. "Similar to those that exist in the present, but radically different in other areas. My guess would be that the Acid Arrow damaged the armor, destroyed part of it. When Pad hit with a Dispel Magic, it rendered the armor vulnerable to further damage. The pounding it took after that seems to indicate that it was no longer magical. More then likely the magic was temporarily cancelled. I find it hard to believe that an Elder Artifact could be destroyed so easily. As for a method of destruction, I believe that the armor can be destroyed after it's magic is Dispel. I could go down there cast Dispel Magic and then Disintegrate it."
"But we don't know if it's a menace or not", Selinda counters. "If it is a 'Seeker of the Chosen', perhaps its function is to locate those deemed worthy by the Elders themselves. If I followed your story correct, the Seeker only attacked in response to being attack. It did not initiate any hostile action on it's own. If it wished to slay the boy it had ample opportunity to do so. It cannot be destroyed!"
"This is just great", Durn starts in. "We have a evil artifact under our city! This smells of Hextor's involvement. It must be destroyed!"
And so the meeting goes back and forth.
At last the council decides to have Sharadin and Selinda investigate the Seeker's chamber. The Seekers are requested to go along just in case. That trip will take place first thing next morning. Both Council members have a few things they wish to research.
Later Sharadin has his talk with Padraig. That night is clear and Pad searches the sky for something that looks familiar. He does not see any familiar sights.
The two mages talk long into the evening.
"If you find your home had become boring then you should find enough excitement to keep your interest. Come this spring we are going to be marching on New Keln, the seat of power of our enemy, the Priests of Hextor. It will be a bloody struggle and your magic would be a definite boon to our side."
The day passes quickly for the rest of the group as they perform their various tasks. Nothing unusual happens.
GM Notes:
Now what?
We'll be back on our regular posting schedule this week. This post will close on Wednesday night.

Armon then spends a little more time poking around the library, seeing what all he can find that would interest a young bard. He won't hesitate to 'look into' any captivating or relevant bit of text that he finds. Armon does not return to the 'Seeker of the Chosen' unless specifically asked. SUBJ: Claudius... FROM: GM Falcon 02/05/91 S#: 25364
Claudius, oblivious to the findings of the Council, will continue to pass his days in the library, reading anything and everything. When and if he learns of Pad's need to catch up, he'll immediately shift gears and dig out some generalized history books for the mage that he's taking a strong liking to.
When Padraig talks of swapping spells, Claud will speak:
"Well, actually this group tends to trade spells freely.."
Assuming he doesn't get his head bitten off, he'll continue.
"Swapping is the way my master taught me also, but this group believes that spell availability is community property...which is good, actually. It's allowed me to gain the maximum number of spells in a minimum time..."
He will open his books to Pad:
First List- Alarm, Chill Touch, Color Spray, Detect Magic, Identify, Magic Missile, Protection from Evil, Read Magic, Shield, Tenser's Floating Disk, Wall of Fog
Second List- Darkness 15' Radius, Detect Evil, Detect Invisibility, ESP, Flaming Sphere, Irritation, Know Alignment, Mirror Image, Stinking Cloud, Web, Wizard Lock

2nd: Detect Evil, Flaming Sphere, Web
SUBJ: Padraig FROM: GM Shifty 02/05/91 S#: 490093
After talking with Claudius, "Well, I understand the sentiment behind that way of operating, but there are a few drawbacks to it in the longer run. However, since I normally let the younger mages in my old party 'run a tab' on spell trades, allowing you free access to all the low level spells in my book won't be a big change from my standard spell swapping deal."
"Oh, and just a friendly word of warning, never open my books by yourself. The results would be unfortunate. You should also avoid opening anything else of mine, if you don't want to here a lot of yelling."
Padraig will attempt to learn the following spells from Claudius' book, in this order: Know Alignment, Wizard Lock, Detect Evil, Darkness 15' Radius.
Pad's Second List Spells: Flaming Sphere, Stinking Cloud, Web, Alter Self, Blur, Continual Light, Detect Invisible, ESP, Fog Cloud, Invisibility, Knock, Levitate, Locate Object, Magic Mouth, Mirror Image, Protection From Cantrips, Pyrotechnics, Rope Trick, Shatter, Spectral Hand
SUBJ: VALIDAR (R) FROM: Bl Panther 02/05/91 S#: 496087
Once the Council has made their decision to go under Gateway and examine the remains of the 'Seeker of the Chosen', Validar will return to the manor house and inform everyone of the situation. Seeing that Finrod is amongst those of our mighty band to volunteer for the return trip, he will address his elven compatriot.
"Hopefully this will be a mere trip down for Sharadin and Selinda to witness the remains of the Gatherer themselves. In any case, I am giving the leadership of the group going down to you for the duration of the expedition. I trust you will work with the Council members however they decide to act."
"I doubt that there will be much action involved, but one can never be too cautious when an artifact of the Elders is in question."
Validar will take the free time he has now given himself and check on the progress of the armor he has commissioned to have made and to prepare a message of recent exploits to have sent back to the Barony of Pyris.

I have seen this work quite well and it may have saved a life or two. But if you wish to trade spells, I will be happy to go along with your wishes."
I then open my books for all the mages.
1st: Armor, Audible Glamer, Burning Hands, Charm Person, Chill Touch, Enlarge, Feather Fall, Find Familiar, Light, Mending, Mount, Sleep, Unseen Servant, Ventriloquism, Friends, Read Magic
