The Frontier #74
A variety of activities are going on in the Tomb of the Gatherer. Some are having discussions, some are reading the runes on the wall and some watch as Finrod tries to open the armored Gatherer.
Validar scans the walls, learning more of the founders of Gateway's encounter with the Gatherer. As he reads, he finds parallels between their encounter and that of the Seekers.
Both encountered the strange Gatherer after he had kidnapped a victim. A boy in the Seekers case, a miner in the Kelnar's case.
They located the Gatherer in his tomb, absorbing the strange energy from the pillars. Both groups moved to stop him.
Beams of energy came from its eyes, striking one of the warriors, destroying him without a trace. Fortunately, only a pillar was disintegrated in the present.
They defeated the Gatherer in combat. Then a strange thing happened. A mist surrounded it and they later found in the sarcophagus. The Keln group waited for the Gatherer to attack. Days passed and the Gatherer did not move.
Believing the foe to be defeated, they moved closer to investigate. At their first touch, the Gatherer attacked!
He was defeated and once again he reappeared in the sarcophagus. This time they did not touch the Gatherer. They sealed this area off and wrote the warning, 'Disturb ye not the Gatherer of Souls'.
At that moment, Finrod tries to chisel an opening in the armor. He strikes, but the metal fails to yield.
Suddenly, the Gatherer rises, striking Finrod with his mailed fist, nearly taking the elf's head off! Fin is thrown back over 10 feet by the force of the blow.
The Gatherer rises from the sarcophagus...

Spectrum's Comments: Now did anyone NOT expect that to happen? ;D
SUBJ: DING DING DING! (R) FROM: GM Falcon 01/10/91 S#: 462277
Claudius watches with shock as Finrod goes flying, and, if anyone were to look very closely, a hint of amusement.
His face grows somber though, and he immediately chants the command word to the *Wand of Lightning*, working to disintegrate the...Gatherer.
"I KNEW IT COULDN'T BE THAT EASY!", he howls.
SUBJ: Padraig (R) FROM: GM Shifty 01/10/91 S#: 436894
"Didn't you just KNOW that was going to happen?"
Not really believing there is enough space in the chamber for a Lightning Bolt, Pad jumps back through the door. He then zips another Magic Missile into the Gatherer. If the thing is still active after the first round of attacks, Pad'll try a Dispel Magic on it.
SUBJ: Mercy FROM: Mastiff1 01/10/91 S#: 823551
Mercy is intrigued by the runes and the story they tell. He is somewhat startled when Finrod starts banging on the armor.
As the Gatherer strike Finrod, Mercy move is to action. He winds with his
Morning star and lets the Gatherer have it.
If Mercy sees the bolt of lighting before his attack, he will jump out of the way.
SUBJ: FINROD (R) FROM: SGT STONEY 01/10/91 S#: 473284
"I KNEW that would get some kind of rise outa the old boy!", Finrod exclaims from his new position, on the floor, on his posterior. Gathering himself up, he places himself directly between the Gatherer and another of the pillars. Waving his hands and hurling insults, he tries to get the attention of the armored figure.
With any luck, ol' tin-britches will try to disintegrate me again, I will dance nimbly out of the way, and another pillar will vanish... unless I miss my guess, once all the pillars are destroyed, our boy will lose his powers. If we can keep tricking him into destroying his own power-source, eventually he will have done our work for us.
Fin's smile is grim, and he has a determined light in his eye... Unfortunately, few of the party are nimble enough to try this with any hope of success, so I am the only one I am willing to risk in this bold (stupid?) plan....
SUBJ: Thundron (R) FROM: Dark2 01/10/91 S#: 451491
"I had a feeling this would happen! Let's get him!"
I draw both swords and my wolf and I attack with a flurry of swords and bites, hoping to bring the Gatherer down as quickly as possible.
SUBJ: vonte FROM: Vonte 01/10/91 S#: 521765
After examining the walls, (and noticing Finrod's flying lesson) I will grasp my holy symbol and attempt to turn the creature from beyond the realms of man.
(If this doesn't work I will grasp my longsword and position my self to keep tin-britches away from the pillars.)
:I will look at tin-britches eyes to see if he/she/IT has "recharged".
SUBJ: Stephanie FROM: Schar 01/10/91 S#: 433498
"Fin!", I shout as me hubbie goes flying. I rush to his side, ready to defend him if the Gatherer should attack.
I listen to him shout at the Gatherer, but do not comprehend what he is trying to do.
"Are you mad?! That thing tried to kill you before!"
Steph raises her sword and positions herself between Fin and tin britches.
(Steph does not comprehend Fin's plan. The curse of limited/low intelligence! ;) )
"You will have to come through me first, monster!"
SUBJ: VALIDAR FROM: Panther4 01/10/91 S#: 491160
Validar puts most of the discussion behind him as he concentrates on reading the Kelnar runes placed here long ago. Validar pauses to consider this situation and then notices what Finrod is about to do. Before he can get the words "Finrod, wait!" out, this Gatherer is functioning once again.
The noble warrior has been ready for the battle, having not yet sheathed his enchanted blade from the previous battle with this construct. He moves forward to attack, but sees that other Seekers are already enacting certain strategies of their own.
With the Lightning Bolt about to be thrown and the fact that this Elder device may react in any number of fashions when the two meet, Validar will take a strategic position behind one of the portals, until the effects of The Lightning Bolt pass. Then he will attempt to maneuver behind the creature, as others as confronting it head on. He would rather be forcing his way to the forefront of the combat, but sees that this may actually prove advantageous with such a deadly foe as the Gatherer. As Validar moves around the room, he thinks that perhaps 'Destroyer' would be a more appropriate name for this strange Elder creation.
Seeing that Stephanie fails to see the plan of her new husband, although not approving of that one either, Validar wants to warn her away. However, the attack may be better served by remaining silent and striking. Validar will move quickly to the attack and try to down the Gatherer with two swift blows before it can summon any more energy to shoot at the newlyweds.
Having struck his first blows, Validar will then speak up.
"There may be yet another way to destroy this Gatherer. If we can keep it from the pillars and recharging, then perhaps by continuous assaults on it, we may force it to expend all its energy. That may be considerably less dangerous than Finrod's impromptu game of 'tag'.
To Bernice, previously:
"Do not worry yourself, my friend. You have nothing to feel ashamed about for your defense of a comrade. I am honored to have as many fine people as yourselves willing to support me. Times have certainly changed."
"Once you take the boy to the surface, you may return, if you wish, or not. Hopefully, we will only be observing this creation. And for a short time, as well. We will be back on the surface soon, I hope."
(Then again, maybe not! Thanks, Fin!)
SUBJ: Arocken FROM: Wildchilde 01/11/91 S#: 834436
Arocken draws his blades and moves on the Gatherer, "Time for you to lie back down friend!!".
"What would happen if Pagdraig hit those pillars with the dispel magic???"
SUBJ: Zynara (R) FROM: Zynara 01/11/91 S#: 823563
Since I was busy trying to read the walls at the time, I don't get to see the flying lesson but my ears hear the landing. I spin to see what happened. Seeing the Gatherer rising, I quickly call up my acid arrow spell and launch the metal eating arrow at the Gatherer.
Those near her hear, "Since your spirit appears to dwell within the tin can you wear, let me see if I can open it up and let your spirit out."
If the Gatherer returns to it's resting place, I will launch more acid arrows at it. "You live in that armor and I am going to destroy that armor. I hope it destroys you at the same time."
SUBJ: Armon FROM: Omni Tuens 01/11/91 S#: 514237
The bard allows himself to venture close as the opening of the armor is about to begin. He looks up momentarily, noticing others studying the runes on the walls.
"Hey Validar! What do those runes you're reading sa-?!?"
The Gatherer, only a few feet away, moves...quickly and with hostility against those nearby. Armon jumps back, quite surprised to find him moving again, and drawing his sword instinctively. The words of Claudius's spell don't register with the bard until the bolt sizzles past a few feet away (assuming Claudius lives long enough to fire it, that is). As Armon tries to absorb the events flashing rapidly before him, he manages to hear a few words spoken by Finrod.
"He wants us to try what??? Is he crazy?!?! This guy is trying to kill us!" When he speaks the words, it dawns on him....the Gatherer IS trying to kill them. He then takes it upon himself to kill this walking armor...again.
Yes, thats right...Armon has the party's worst AC, THAC0, and Hit points. Why not attack? >;D
Post Continued:
The Gatherer is awake once more! Claudius fires his Wand of Lightning, striking the Gatherer solidly.
Unexpectedly, a portion of the bolt fragments and is reflected off the armor. The smaller bolts of lightning fill the chamber, striking Finrod, Mercy, Vonte and Armon. Armon goes down.
Padraig, watching from the safety of the door, fires another volley of Magic Missiles.
Shaking off the effects of the minor Lightning Bolt, Vonte tries to turn the Gatherer with no success. He looks and sees no blue glow to its eyes.
Zynara acts next, throwing an Acid Arrow into the Gatherer's chest. The armor begins to dissolve around the area of the wound. Still nothing can be seen underneath.
The warriors move to the attack. Of the group attacking, Validar, Thundron, Arocken and Mercy, only Validar connects.
Padraig follows up his Magic Missile with Dispel Magic centered on the Gatherer. He slumps to the floor, like a puppet whose strings were cut.
Yep, he's down again...
SUBJ: Padraig FROM: GM Shifty 01/13/91 S#: 846099
"Personally, I don't know an 'Elder' from a hole in the wall. But from what you've said, I guess anything of their making is both mysterious in its aims and extremely powerful. I defer to those who know more than I in this case, but I think you're missing a possibility here."
"From what we've seen and what was written, this thing only attacks those who attack it first. We have no idea what it was doing to the boy, but if it was only trying to kill him, it had ample time before we arrived. Given no more information, I wouldn't categorically state that its intentions towards the boy were evil or harmful."
"Because of this, and the fact that we probably don't have what it takes to permanently disable it anyway, might I suggest we leave it be. Then we can consult with your city leaders about it. If they have no better ideas, we can come back down and seal off all entrances to its 'lair' and let it lie undisturbed for another millennium."
(Besides, if it gets up again, the spells I have left to throw that might affect it won't do much good for the party. Fireball and Lightning Bolt have some severe drawbacks in tight areas.)
SUBJ: Vonte 2 (R) FROM: Vonte 01/13/91 S#: 817836
After catching fragments of a lightning bolt, and noticing everybody else picking themselves up off the floor. I will attend to Armon's unconscious state(just bandaging Armon [NO magical healing without PL's consent])
***What if we destroyed the sarcophagus while Tin Britches was out, where would he/she/IT go to once destroyed???***
Why did tin-britches decide not to use lazer-eyes on us , a recharging problem he must touch the pillars to use energy-blasts???
***Maybe going to the surface is not so bad an idea, half of the party is hurt, my healing abilities are limited...we can rest and form a plan on the surface and return and destroy this if we decide to, but I think we should move on and not stay here too much longer.***
SUBJ: Armon FROM: Omni Tuens 01/14/91 S#: 815299
Armon turns his full attention towards the figure, raising his sword to strike and realizing he's just paranoid to worry about the effects of Claudius's spell, as the mage surely knows what he's doing and would have more sense than to fry his own friends. He is given little time to reconsider this as the bolt pinballs off the armour to strike him directly, sending him flipping several feet backwards to lie in a heap on the floor. Any observant members of the party will note that he appears to be in pain, and is subsequently groaning slightly (although he doesn't seem to be aware of it). His pain appears to lessen as Vonte bandages him, although it does little to help his scorched and still smoking clothing (Nothing ruins a bard's day more than having a perfectly good wardrobe fried!). The bard remains motionless on the floor, making a mental note when he regains consciousness to tell someone he doesn't have anything at all against healing spells.
SUBJ: Claudius... FROM: GM Falcon 01/14/91 S#: 802603
Claudius reacts with plain shock when the lightning bolt fragments.
He sheathes the wand as the blows strike, and turns beet red. Utterly ignoring the rest of the battle, he runs to the only major casualty... Armon.
"CLERIC!", he bellows, but Vonte is already there to repair the damage.
He continues to watch Armon with a worried expression. After the battle, he seeks Padraig out.
"How did you know?", he asks simply.
SUBJ: VALIDAR FROM: Panther4 01/14/91 S#: 809066
"First of all, Vonte, you do not need MY permission to cast your spells upon another member of the party. I simply do not consent to having spells cast upon MYSELF. Whether the others are accepting of such is entirely a matter between you and them."
"I believe that whatever effect was caused by the blue glow of its eyes was not accessible to it this time. Being right next to the construct, I noticed the blue glow in its visor just before it fired. And it was drawing the same type of energy from these pillars when we arrived. This energy was not evident when it attacked this time. I believe that it must draw this energy out of them again before it can utilize it."
"Also, we have no way of knowing what that effect was. Teleport? Disintegrate? Or any number of possibilities. I cannot, however, allow myself to believe that its intentions, or the intentions of its creators, ISN'T evil or harmful. You are correct, Padraig, in saying that we do not have enough information to assume its course of action, but that does not allow me to decide that it will not cause us or others trouble if we leave it here alone. It is my responsibility to see to it that it does not have the opportunity to hurt anyone."
"For one thing, we do not know that the armor had ample time to harm our servant. It may be that the pillars energy is only available after a period of time, or at certain times. We cannot be sure that it wasn't acting as quickly as it could. Nor can we assume the opposite. Also, we DON'T know what it takes to disable it. We may in fact have the capabilities. We may have even disabled it already."
"If those that are injured wish to return to the surface, you are all welcome to do so. As I said, I am not yet satisfied that the danger is passed and will remain until that concern is assuaged. I have a few 'experiments' that I wish to further conduct."
"As for you, Claudius, do not trouble yourself with the slight backfiring of your attack. I foresaw the possibility that such a thing might happen as well, but feel that the attack was still a good one. Catching us off guard as it did, it may have caused greater damage if we did not put it down quickly as possible."
Validar will move over to the pillar that was 'affected' by the blue energy from the Gatherer and examine whatever may be left of it, or at least the area around the pillar. Also, he will give the armor a solid smash with his mace before, and if, it returns to the sarcophagus. If nothing happens, he will do so again, if the armor does indeed return to its resting place.
If nothing occurs, then Validar will ask for a volunteer or two to guard the Gatherer while the rest of the Seekers return to the surface of Gateway to discuss the courses of action with the Council.
SUBJ: FINROD (R) FROM: SGT STONEY 01/15/91 S#: 446716
"Ah, Steph, I love you dearly, Darlin'! But Please, try to assume that I do know what I'm about in the future... sometimes it's crazy, and often tough to explain the leaps of intuition I get in battle... just watch my back, and I'll watch yours, as any shield-bound couple would, and trust that I know Magic and Roguery just as you are far the better warrior than I."
Finrod gathers Stephanie in a fond hug.
"Validar, I think that myself, Stephanie, and Claudius would be ideal candidates to guard the creature while you seek guidance from the elders... Steph can single-handedly deal with as wimpy a slugger as this fellow is, and I am no slouch with a sword. Also, Claude and I can continue our researches into what there is to find about Tin-Britches. Before you go, though, please translate for us the Old Kelnar runes you were studying."
"Both of you Clerics should be made aware that I will refuse no magical healing, being a pragmatist and a thaumaturgy. Also, be aware both of you that if you should withhold any healing from my Wife, I would take Violent offense. You may withhold what you like from me, but endanger Stephanie at your Peril!"
There is a dangerous glint in the elven mercenary's eyes when he speaks of the consequences of failing to tend Steph's wounds in proper fashion.
SUBJ: Padraig FROM: GM Shifty 01/15/91 S#: 789349
Speaking first to Validar, "Again I preface my statements with the disclaimer that I know nothing of these Elders you speak of, whether they were good, evil, or indifferent. However, I'd like to remind you that this construct wasn't named the 'Gather of Souls' by these Elders. They called it the 'Seeker of the Chosen', a much less menacing title."
"I say that it could have killed this boy earlier, because it obviously has the physical strength necessary to kill him with a single blow. Granted, such a simple death might not suit its designers' purposes. However, taken with its name, it's enough to make me wonder if it doesn't have a much less sinister purpose."
"As to whether or not we can destroy it, I don't know either. However, I've had a little experience with magical constructs. If it got back up once after having gone down, it's unlikely that mere physical damage will stop it. Rather than take chances with something that might be able to disintegrate people, why not consult with wiser men first?"
To Claudius, "I didn't know it was going to fragment like that. However, that room didn't look big enough to contain a lightning bolt without reflecting back on us. Just remember in the future that area spells can be especially devastating in enclosed areas. Be sure you have enough room to toss them without frying friendlies. You'll give Invokers a bad name, this way."
SUBJ: Stephanie FROM: Schar 01/15/91 S#: 794960
Seeing tin britches go down so quickly and that my blade will not be needed, I sheath the sword.
I tend to Finrod, ignoring, and not truly understanding, the conversations going on around her.
As I tend Finrod, I scold him for such foolish actions.
"Are you trying to get yourself killed?! Well? Are you?"
I listen to his reply, but I'm not sure what to think.
"What did you want me to do? I saw that thing going towards you. I wouldn't let anything happen to you."
I nod in agreement when Fin suggests that I also remain behind.
"Someone has to watch out for you."

After binding Armon's wounds, I will proceed to cast my curing of wounds upon him. Looking to Validar "thank you for dissipating my fears for the use of my healing powers upon the party"
Bowing slightly to Validar
Then turning to look at Finrod. With a look of disgust upon my face I then turn my attentions back upon Armon. Hoping to see some improvement in his health.
Spectrum's Comments: No, Fin and Vonte were not buddies.
SUBJ: Zynara FROM: Zynara 01/17/91 S#: 415620
As the Gatherer goes down again I stand ready to watch the effects. As talk quickly swings to someone staying, I speak up.
"My acid arrow was doing some damage to that tin can until Padrag (?) nullified the spell. I also noticed that there was now mist this time and the Gatherer is still where he fell. Might I suggest we clear the room so the boy mage can have all the room he needs for his spells if they are needed and I cast another acid arrow on the tin can. It should open the can so we can see what is inside. If it gets up, we can all see raw magic unleashed before putting the monster down again. What do you think?"
The Frontier #75
Vonte goes to work on Armon's wounds. He gets quick results between the bandaging and the CLW, completely healing the bard's wounds.
Validar examines the area where the pillar was apparently destroyed by the Gatherer. No trace of it remains, no chips of stone, nothing.
Turning the Gatherer himself, he sees the armor to be in poor shape itself. Numerous sword slashes mar the armor. Zynara's Acid Arrow has destroyed a large portion of the chest.
Taking a mace, he slams it into the Gatherer, creating a huge dent in the armor.
Follow blows further distort the Gatherer's armored form.
Time passes and the Gatherer remains laying on the floor.

The bard slowly comes around as the healing spell is applied, and soon arises, well.
"Thank you Vonte. I am within your debt. Now, however, I suggest you see to your own wounds."
Armon quickly notes the abuse being registered on the armor, and recalls what this lead to previously. He moves closer, staying cautiously away from 'that mage'.
"I don't think we're taking the right approach to this. Let's think this through...if this Gatherer is hidden underneath Gateway, then doesn't it figure that someone above, IN Gateway, would know something about it? Or at least maybe an old tome noting its existence? I think we should go see what we can find, along the lines of more information. Then we can judge from what we learn whether or not to take any further action."
SUBJ: Claudius... FROM: GM Falcon 01/18/91 S#: 504757
"Look..", the mage snaps peevishly. He walks forward and gives the armor a suitable kick.
"The Keln runes said that he should be getting up now. After the second attack the Gatherer went back to his sarcophagus again."

SUBJ: Padraig FROM: GM Shifty 01/19/91 S#: 501033

Thinking aloud, "Well, we watched it for an hour or so before the mist formed last time. Perhaps it cannot reactivate until it has been returned to its resting place by the mist."

Seeing everyone else around Tin Britches, I move away having lost interest in the thing. I approach Vonte.

"Forgive my husband for being overly protective. I assure you that he shall use no form of force against you. I will see to that. Also, I will accept healing spells cast upon myself."

"I think that this THING is sufficiently damaged to no longer worry about any danger from it for a awhile, if ever." Validar will smash it one final time with his mace as a punctuation to his statement.
"Therefore, I think perhaps we should consult with General Logan and the rest of Gateway's Council. However, I have my doubts that they know much about it. The Gatherer was locked up down here by the original founders of the city: the Keln Empire. This town was taken by Cynalon after the war with Keln. It is worth asking about, but unlikely to prove much in the way of information."
"Again, I do not purport to understand the workings of the Elders, but the fact is, this Gatherer is simply a crushed metal skin. Even if it does reform and repower, it will certainly take some time. With that in mind, I think we can all safely leave here for the time being and have some of the regular guard of Gateway watch over it, if General Logan deems that appropriate."
Vonte, I think we can offer a much more comfortable place to rest at if that is what you wish. The Seekers have a manor house not far from the entrance to this underground complex. We shall all retire there, or go our own ways for a while now. I will go to the Council and present the situation to them and let them deal with it as they see fit. Come, let us return to the surface."

We don't want to start a panic do we? If we take the time to clean ourselves up a bit, not spit and polish clean, wouldn't it be better?"
Once back, I get myself cleaned and presentable. I dress in a clean set of adventuring clothes. When asked why the change in dress..."If I remember right, someone mentioned that there was a band of goblins killed down there. I don't think the local army will be traipsing down there to find out where they came from. I think we will be serving that purpose and I will need to get use to wearing these grungy things again. Might as well start now. Anyway, I am getting tired of sitting here in town. I always enjoyed the rush of going into the unknown. I would like to go and find that entrance and see who was behind that goblin band. Maybe we can even turn in a detail map of the sewers for the town. That should make them happy shouldn't it?"

Hearing no objections, Thundron hacks at the sarcophagus until it is damaged to his satisfaction (nearly destroyed).
"I would of course accompany you Vonte. I require the advice of Ehlonna from time to time as well as you. Although I do not receive spells as of yet, she gives me strength to continue in battle."
