Crusaders #17 - "Picking Up the Pieces"
SUBJ: "PICKING UP THE PIECES" FROM: Panther13 06/03/89 S#: 74462
Four sore and weary heroes slowly regained consciousness.
Firestar - "I hurt all over!"
Imperial - "I know how you feel, sweet-cheeks. Where are we anyway?!"
Spirit - "We are still at the battle site."
Ranger - "Look at this place. It looks like a disaster struck!"
Imperial - "One did. Or should I say eight did."
Firestar - "Well, where is everyone, then?"
Imperial - "How should I know?"
Ranger - "I have a bad feeling about this."
Spirit - "As do I."
Imperial - "Well, let's just head back to the HQ and find out what happened there. I want to get out of here in case more of those can-heads show up."
As the heroes make their way back to the Crusaders HQ, Firestar makes a surprising discovery.
Firestar - "Look at that!"
Imperial - "What?"
Ranger - "Glendale National Bank? When was that put there?"
Spirit - "I am certain that no such structure stood on this spot this morning. "
Firestar - "Impossible."
Imperial - "Like I said, we can sort this out at the headquarters. I want to take a long hot shower."
Once at the base, they are enter and find Lightwarp in the meeting room!
Lightwarp - "Glad to see that the rest of you were able to make it back! We have an incredible situation to deal with."
Imperial - "Oh man, can't it wait? I hurt all over."
Lightwarp - "No, I'm sorry. It can't..."
Suddenly, Lightwarp bursts into flames. The armored figure melts in the blaze, and a man with a flamethrower steps forward.
Blowtorch - "You've got a problem all right! ME!!"
Spectrum's Comments: The crossover with Equinox has concluded, but now the memberships had been juggled a little bit. Those familiar with our site probably realize what is going on here. I won't spoil it just yet for those not in the know.
The issue title is something of an inside joke as well. It goes back to the old files version of X-Factor. While Muskateer wrote the majority of X-Factor, I did do a few issues. I did old #20, which was partially redone as Spectrum #19 on the site. I also did # 36-41 as well, with 36-38 being the origin of Spectrum that was redone in Spectrum #25 & 26. Well, when Muskateer took back over with XF #42 it was called "Picking Up the Pieces". Then on Q after he picked up Crusaders from me filling in, he again called an issue shortly thereafter "Picking Up the Pieces". See a trend there? The title referred to the mess the previous person had left behind!
That's okay, as I finally got back at him on the website. Muskateer wrote Spectrum #1-5 and I took over with #6 and then titled #7 "Picking Up the Pieces".

While we gather ourselves up and prepare for the trip to the Crusaders HQ, I'll introduce myself to my new companions. "Although we've battle along side one another, we haven't actually been introduced. My name is Ranger. The last thing I recall before awaking was being slimed. It therefore seems odd that we were left on the battle scene. What became of the Minutemen, and our companions?"
Upon witnessing the attack at Crusader's HQ, I'll attempt to jump over the assailant and kick him in the back, toward the others. "Here's the inbound pass, it's your ball now."

SUBJ: Firestar
'Pleased to me you, Ranger. And Spirit, your aid will be more than appreciated. Gentlemen, I am Firestar, the elected leader of what is left of the Crusaders.'
This is all very strange indeed. Glendale National Bank? Isn't that in California? I do not like this situation at all. Like, Ranger stated, the last thing I also remember is of being hit by a tidal wave from one of the Minutemen. As for Blowtorch...
'You are the one with the problem! Let's get him, guys!'
I'll fly at Blowtorch, hoping to draw his fire. (Literally!) Being a fire wielder myself, his fire shouldn't' hurt me too much. That should give the guys a chance to take him out.
Oh, and Imperial... Call me 'sweet-cheeks' one more time and I'll burn every hair off of your body one at a time!
SUBJ: Imperial
'Sounds like a real temptin', babe, But business before pleasure. Time to whomp this flame throwin' freak. I'll also fly forward and punch Blowhard. That should take care of this bozo.
'You're right, babe. Glendale is in Cali. Grew up there. This is like totally weird.'
Spectrum's Comments: As if that would deter Imperial in the slightest!
SUBJ: Update
Blowtorch has just arrived on the scene and apparently slagged Lightwarp. But was it the real one, the fake, or someone else altogether. Time to worry about that later!
Imperial - "Blow it out yer ear, Blow-hard!"
Imperial and Spirit are the quickest to react. While Spirit simply disappears, Imperial takes the more direct approach. He flies forward and bashes the villain square on the jaw. Blowtorch is knocked back, stunned.
Imperial - "Where does this bozo get off attacking us in our headquarters?"
Ranger - "Maybe you should ask him, when he wakes up!"
Ranger moves in and kicks the recovering villain. He is smashed back further still and slams into a wall.
Firestar - "Hmmm... It seems as if there isn't even any need to fight fire with fire."
Just then, Spirit emerges out of the floor and begins blasting the stunned villain. Blowtorch is unconscious before he hits the floor. However, Spirit has a look of grim determination about him, and blasts him again.
Imperial - "Whoa there, Sparky! He's out of it."
Ranger and Imperial help bring Spirit back to his senses, as Firestar examines Lightwarp.
Spirit - "I am sorry. It seems I lost my head there. I do have my reasons, however."
Ranger - "I think I understand."
Firestar makes a startling discovery!
Firestar - "Everybody! Come here!"
As the heroes gather around the place where Lightwarp fell, all they see is a puddle of fluid, green and gold in color.
Imperial - "He was literally liquefied. I hope that was the bogus one, and not our real boss."
Ranger - "This is almost beyond belief. What is going on around here, anyway?"
Firestar - "I'm open for suggestions."
"Perhaps you should ask me, then."
The heroes turn to see Nightingale walk into the meeting room, escorted by Felicity.
Felicity - "Glad to see that you heroes made it back."
Imperial - "I thought the bogus Lightwarp said he captured you?"
Felicity - "No. We were just put on a bit of a wild goose chase. We were never in any real danger."
Firestar - "Well, that's a relief."
Spirit - "So, where are the rest of the heroes?"
Ranger - "Yes. I was just about to ask the same question, 'Gale."
Nightingale - "Well, there was a terrible battle with the Minutemen, as you remember."
Firestar - "Some of it, anyway."
Nightingale - "They started taking us out, rather quickly, I might add. The last few that remained went after them when they tried to leave and we fought again. Somehow, we overcame that group and freed those of you that were originally captured, but another band soon followed. This time, we were all captured. I managed to slip away by confusing their sensors with some mental illusions. Everyone else, excluding the five of us, were captured and taken away. Unfortunately, I have no idea where yet. I've been trying to contact some of them, telepathically, but haven't had any success."
Imperial - "Looks like it's up to us to save the day then."
Ranger - "Interesting..."
Spirit - "Where do we begin, then?"
Firestar - "Well, for starters..."
Just then, each of you hears a voice in your heads.
"We know that you're in there Nightingale! You cannot hide from us!"
Ranger - "That's Psi-kin. I recognize Indigo's voice."
"Ah, my friend Ranger, you are correct. That makes this a doubly good visit then. You are welcome to come out and surrender peaceably."
Imperial - "Stuff it, bozo!"
"Hmmm. I thought not. But good manners necessitate that the invitation be offered. Very well, we shall do this the difficult way. And do be assured, friend Ranger, that any sort of sneak attack will not be looked upon favorably this time!"
Firestar operates some of the machinery and a view screen flickers to life. On it, near the fountain on the front lawn are four costumed villains: Indigo, Crimson, Emerald, and Alabaster. The PSI-KIN!
Crimson wears a black costume with deep red trim. A glowing energy field, also of red, surrounds him.
Alabaster is a large man, whose skin is albino white. He wears a black bathing suit and boots, and is bald.
Emerald wears a white bodysuit with green trim. She carries a green shield and her hair is also green.
Indigo, the leader, wears a black costume with purple and white trim. He, also, glows with energy.
SUBJ: ENFORCER and STARSHINE (R) FROM: Panther13 06/10/89 S#: 795180
We look in on the hero known as the Enforcer. Just returning from his regular patrol of this fine city, Enforcer seems to be having some difficulty re-entering his base, thanks to his A.I.D., CINDI.
Enforcer - "Look, CINDI, will you quit clowning around and let me in?!"
CINDI - "I cannot do that."
Enforcer - "What do you mean cannot?"
CINDI - "You haven't given the password, yet. I can't let you in without the password."
Enforcer - "CINDI, we don't use passwords."
CINDI - "I thought I'd try it out and see how it works. What do you think?"
Enforcer - "I think I may have to replace you with a Nintendo system!"
CINDI - "Were you expecting visitors?"
Enforcer - "What is this, 20 questions, now?"
CINDI - "No, just that one."
Enforcer - "No, why? Who's coming?"
CINDI - "Unknown, but they are approaching rapidly from the southwest."
Quickly looking in that direction, the Enforcer sees a white streak rocketing toward him at incredible speeds. Suddenly, it slows and drops to the ground, and the blue and black garbed hero can see that it is a woman. She wears a white tunic and golden bracers. She appears to be nearly exhausted.
Enforcer - "Who are you?"
CINDI - "I'm CINDI!"
Enforcer - "Not you! Her!"
CINDI - "Oh..."
The woman struggles to rise, but is having difficulty. Enforcer helps her to her feet.
Enforcer - "Easy."
Starshine - "I am Starshine. I'm being chased. They've been after me for a few days now!"
She seems frightened as well.
Enforcer - "After you? Who's been chasing you?"
Starshine - "Creatures. I never thought the bogeyman was real, but...."
Suddenly everything goes pitch black!
Starshine - "They're here!!"
After a moment, there is light once more. Starshine is glowing, illuminating a small area of the darkness.
Enforcer - "There's something moving out there."
On the fringes of the darkness, movement can be seen. A misshapen form can barely be made out.
"You cannot escape, Erica Gianelli! You can run, but you cannot hide. We have found you. And now, you must die!"
Spectrum's Comments: Here are two new players to the game. Enforcer was a character by N4sir, big surprise huh?, to replace Golden Lion. Lion was just basically written out and no one even seemed to notice. Starshine has a very familiar real name that is also shared with the Tigress! She was also covertly played by Muskateer.

"I encountered these four once before, while in Nightingale's company. They don't exactly see eye to eye with her. From what I could gather during our battle, they are all mentalist, each with a different specialty. Nightingale knows some more about them."
Once the group is ready to move, I'll head outside, preferably from some point where I'll have a height advantage. I jump into the Psi-Kos, taking my best shot at Indigo. After that, its catch as catch can.
"We've got to hit these people hard and fast. Last time, Gale and I had the element of surprise on our side. This time, they know exactly what's coming."
SUBJ: Imperial
'With the power we have assembled here, we don't need the element of surprise. Time a trash these suckers!'
Imperial flies from the base and headlong into the conflict.
'Hey, Crimson! -You're number one on my hit parade!'
I'll fly in and blast him first. Switch to strength and then engage him hand to hand. Brainy types never seem to be able to hand themselves in a brawl. I'll alternate between the attacks, using which ever seems to be working the best.

Looks like I get to tackle Emerald. I'll fly in towards the woman.

"Yes. I can illuminate the area. I guess the darkness is too big to light the whole thing though."
My light has a 3" diameter.
"I don't know what that thing is, but it won't quit following me! It's been chasing me for two days now! Can you help me? Please. My powers don't seem to affect it!"
Starshine wears a white, tight-fitting, tunic-like costume, which leaves her arms and legs bare. It also has cutouts, front and back. It is fastened over one shoulder by a ruby pendant. A bright orange sash is on her hips and also secured by a matching ruby pendant. She wears four golden bracers that extend halfway up her forearms and shins. She wears other gold and ruby jewelry to round out the costume. Starshine's hair is dark brown and falls to the middle of her back in wavy curls. Her eyes are green.
Spectrum's Comments: Muskateer was going to college during this time period at the University of New Mexico. Their nickname was the Lobo's.
Crusaders #18 - "PSI-ed Out"
As Starshine lights the area, an odd-looking, misshapen figure can be seen on the fringe of the darkness. However, while its description is currently fuzzy, its intention is clear!
Creature - "Erica Gianelli! Prepare to die!"
Starshine - "It knows who I am! Who are you?! What are you?!"
Creature - "I am your nightmare. I am your death."
During this moment, CINDI has had time to scan the area. He says that that is the only creature close by, although another figure is closing on the site. Somehow, the darkness clouds his scanners and he cannot "see" who it is. Only radar works.
Starshine is currently terrified, as Enforcer interposes himself between the creature and herself.
Enforcer - "You will have to get past me before you can harm the girl."
Creature - "As you wish..."
Suddenly, the thing is gone!
Enforcer - "CINDI! Scan! Where is that thing?"
However, Starshine is the first to learn. The creature appears behind her and wraps its huge gnarled hands about her neck. She screams!
Enforcer - "That thing gets around fast!"
CINDI - "The being is behind you now."
Enforcer - "I already know that, CINDI. Thanks, anyway."
Enforcer leaps at the intruder and delivers a flying kick. However, it doesn't seem to be affected much. It still is intent on its stranglehold on the young heroine. The lighted area around everyone is beginning to shrink.
CINDI - "I should inform you that the other...."
Just then a man in a dark blue mesh outfit bursts onto the scene. He wears a bright red arrow on his chest. You can soon see that he is black. He also has a blocky forcefield about his body. He crashes into Starshine and the creature sending all three sprawling.
CINDI - "....radar blip has just come into range."
Enforcer - "As always, your timing is impeccable."
Starshine tries to get away, but the creature is upon her again. It swings an arm out and sends her crashing to the pavement, barely conscious.
Nomad and Enforcer close in on the misshapen thing. It is disgusting to look at, like something out of your most terrifying nightmare as a young child.
Nomad - Man, how do I get into these situations, anyway?
Creature - "By standing at the girl's side, you have marked yourselves for death, as well."
Enforcer - "Give it your best shot. I don't die easily!"
As the heroes move in, the creature gives an evil grin. Reaching into a hidden place, of some sort, it pulls out a large pistol and fires! Enforcer takes the bullet in the shoulder and is spun backward to his knees. Blood starts to pour from the wound.
Creature - "And now for you!"
He turns to Nomad, as the hero closes to grapple with the creature. The two lock for a moment, but the creature proves stronger. Nomad is knocked aside, but the creature is upon him in an instant. It continues its attack with an inhuman ferocity. By the time Enforcer has recovered sufficiently, Nomad is unconscious and Starshine nearly so.
Creature - "Now you will die!"
Enforcer - "Not if I have anything to say about it."
Enforcer is upon the thing once more. His attack makes it drop Starshine. The thing and Enforcer trade a few blows. The blue and black-garbed hero matches the creature blow for blow, but it is soon obvious that this being is much stronger than he. He soon falls, stunned.
Creature - "Your protectors have fallen. You can no longer run. It is now over, Erica Gianelli."
Starshine - "I don't know who you are. or even what you are, but I'm not going to run any more!"
Suddenly a burst of light erupts from the young heroine. It slams into the monster and drives it back.
Starshine - "You've hounded me and hunted me for days now, and I am just SICK of it!"
As the monster rises once more, she fires again. This time, the creature howls an unholy howl as it is struck by the light energy. Then suddenly, it is gone again.
Enforcer and Nomad are just barely aware of what happens next, as it all happens very quick. The creature appears behind Starshine again and wraps its huge arms about her.
Starshine screams, but also emits a tremendous display of energy from her entire body. Her scream is quickly drowned out by the scream of the creature. It is literally disintegrated before everyone's eyes! Starshine drops to her knees from the effort.
Enforcer - "Here, let me help you up."
Starshine - "Thank you. Thanks for saving my life!"
Nomad - "From where I stand, looks like you saved it yerself. Got some fancy firepower there, sister."
Enforcer - "Well, if it wasn't for your intervention, we might all be dead."
Starshine - "Look, I'd rather not talk about this anymore. It still gives me the creeps to think that that thing wanted to kill me, and I don't even know why!!"
Nomad - "Interesting.... Hey, man, are you alright?"
He points out Enforcer's bullet wound.
Enforcer - "It's nothing serious. I've had worse."
Nomad - "By the by, I call myself Nomad. I've just been asked to join the Crusaders. We just dealt with Mechanon and VIPER at that caper at the airport yesterday. I'm sure you heard about it."
Starshine - "Yesterday? Are you sure?"
Nomad - "Yeah, it was in all the papers."
(Editor's note: Both of you did hear about said thing, but it was well over a week ago!)
Nomad - "From what Lightwarp said, he's lookin' for some new blood. Judging from this little slugfest, the two of you might ask to sign up. Both of ya got spunk, that's for sure."
Well, you all should have plenty of questions by now, and even if not, it's up to you what you do now anyway!
The assembled heroes burst out into the Crusaders' front yard to do battle with the newly arrived, and threatening, Psi-Kin.
As Spirit turns invisible and moves to outflank the villains, Imperial uses the more direct approach. He flies straight forward and rockets into Crimson. The two go tumbling a short distance. Meanwhile, Ranger moves to intercept Indigo.
Ranger - "So, we meet again. Our first encounter wasn't enough of an embarrassment for you?"
Indigo - "You may not be so smug after this fight, Ranger. Not in the least."
Before Ranger can react, Indigo lashes out with a mental blast harming the green and black-garbed hero.
As this goes on, Firestar and Emerald square off. Firestar shoots a burst of flame at the green haired villainess, but she deftly blocks it with her shield.
Indigo - "Alabaster, beware. There is an invisible one attempting to sneak up on you from the rear."
Alabaster turns and swings, blindly. The sudden attack takes Spirit by surprise and he just barely avoids the crushing blow.
Alabaster - "Perhaps we should change partners, brother."
Indigo - "The Ranger is all yours, brother."
As Indigo unleashes another mental force bolt, this time at Spirit, Alabaster moves to confront Ranger.
Ranger - "I didn't have the pleasure during the last encounter."
Alabaster - "Nor I!"
The albino villain swings a tremendous blow, but Ranger leaps over the attack. As Alabaster tries again in vain to strike Ranger, the hero suddenly throws him off balance. Ranger then delivers a kick that sends the massive villain backward, stunned.
Nearby,...
Imperial - "Hey! You've got six arms!"
Crimson - "One of my many talents, you'll find."
Crimson begins to pummel Imperial with all of his limbs. The hero takes some damage, but retaliates as well.
Imperial - "You only need one, if you use it right!"
Crimson is sent flying backward from the force of Imperial's mighty blow. He crashes into the fountain.
Emerald - "Very funny, witch! I'll make you pay for that remark!"
Emerald rushes forward to attack Firestar at close quarters. However, Firestar does not cooperate with the villainess. Leaving a flaming streak behind her, she soars into the air.
Firestar - "Testy, testy. That impetuousness is going to get you one of these days!"
She blankets Emerald in fire.
Firestar - "In fact, it looks like today!"
Meanwhile, Spirit's intangibly and invisibility is no defense against the mental powers of Indigo. On the ropes, he is forced to use a more conventional mode of attack. His energy beam slams into Indigo knocking him to the grassy lawn. As Indigo rises and returns the attack, Spirit fires again at the same moment. Both supers hit their targets and both drop to the ground, stunned.
As Ranger moves in to put the final touches on Alabaster, the villain reacts with surprising quickness for so large a man. He blocks Ranger's attack. However, before he can follow up with one of his own, Alabaster is suddenly downed by an unseen source.
Nightingale - "Some villains just never learn."
Ranger - "Thanks, 'Gale. Time to return the favor."
Ranger does a flip across the battlefield and downs Crimson as he struggles to rise where he landed after Imperial's blow. He lands with a splash in the water, unconscious.
Ranger - "Well, can't let him drown."
As Ranger pulls the unconscious villain from the fountain, Imperial uses the opportunity to help his favorite teammate.
Imperial - "I'm here to give you a little help, sweet cheeks."
Emerald - "Not even the two of you can defeat the likes of me! I'll take all of you on by myself!"
Imperial - "Fat chance, sister."
He fires a beam of energy from his red-gloved hand. However, Emerald is quite adept at using her shield. She deflects the beam away.
Emerald - "You cannot harm me with those pitiful attacks."
Imperial - "Guess we'll have to do this the old-fashioned way."
Imperial delivers a blow to the villainess, catching her square on the chin. She is dropped by the blow, and doesn't appear to be stirring for some time.
Imperial - "Well, I hate to say it, but with your yap flapping like that so much, it sure made a great target!"
Finally, Firestar glides over to the last two combatants. She sees that both hero and villain are rising at the same moment.
Firestar - "Can I offer you an assist, Spirit?"
Together, the two heroes fire at Indigo. Both beams hit before he can unleash an attack of his own, and together, they bring down the last of the Psi-Kin.
Imperial - "We're unbeatable!"
Well, at this point you are all welcome to deal with the Psi-Kin as you see fit. You will finally have a moment, however brief, to discuss your plans at this point. However, as a side note, should anyone check on the secured Blowtorch, they will find him gone without a trace.
