The Frontier #46

SUBJ: The Frontier - Post #46 (R4) FROM: GM Mad 06/27/90 S#: 832222

Now that the occupant of the grove has shown its reptilian face, the Seekers move to oppose the green dragon. Dar casts his flame blade and then moves to attack the dragon with that and the Dragonslayer.

Dar moves faster than the gargantuan beast and manages to wound the creature with the Dragonslayer. The wyrm roars its anger and rakes the elf with its large claws. Dar is severely wounded by the attack.

Meanwhile, arrows rain down from the tower but bounce off the reptile's scaly hide. Another pair of arrows also fails to affect the dragon from Arocken's bow.

Dar continues his courageous attack on the beast, but it is not enough. The dragon shrugs off his feeble attacks and strikes with another deadly swipe. Dar is sent staggering to the ground with blood flowing from his wounds. Dar is on death's door after being worked over by the emerald reptile. More arrows either miss the beast or bounce off its hide again.

The rest of the Seekers move out to continue the attack on the green dragon. Validar is the first to reach the wyrm, riding in on his warhorse. His lance penetrates the dragon's hide and it roars again in pain.

The dragon shows its displeasure by reaching out and biting Validar with its large teeth, knocking him off his horse.

Validar struggles to his feet, the large dragon bearing down on him....

Validar 19 of 42

Okay, the following has the locations of the various Seekers...

Arathron and Bernice are in the tower. They are about 140' away from the dragon.

Blod, Cereld and Stephanie are rapidly closing on the dragon. About 40' away.

Validar and Dar are too close to the dragon... ;)

Araduin, Valgrin, Finrod, Eagle, Arocken are with 60' to 90' away from you know who...

Demonslayer and Zynara are still in the temple...

SUBJ: Blod (R) FROM: Begal 06/28/90 S#: 394418

Blod will continue to close with the Dragon.

"Hold on Sir Clang!! We will carve this big lizard into Steaks!!!"

SUBJ: Cereld (R) FROM: Lanceson 06/28/90 S#: 481222

As Cereld rides closer to the dragon, he witnesses Dar's desperate battle with the lizard. As he sees him fall, a quick realization tells him that judging from that last swipe; Dar does not have long on this plane without immediate help. Knowing that the others are more than capable of keeping the king sized iguana busy for a few minutes, Cereld spurs his horse on toward Dar. When he arrives, he will immediately lay hands on the valued Cleric, and try to pull him a little more out of the way. Once Dar is safe (or as safe as he can be this close to a Dragon), Cereld will take his axe and join his comrades in slaying the beast.

Mail From: Lanceson Date: Thursday 28-Jun-90 20:57 EDT

Mad I know I did not add this to Cereld's actions, but he will cast more than one CLW if Dar needs it to stay alive. If possible he will save them though, in case some one else ends up this way before this battle is through.

SUBJ: Arocken FROM: Wildchilde 06/28/90 S#: 456627

Due to my wounded condition, I will look for cover in some tree or rocks and fire my bow at the large beast aiming for the eyes or soft underbelly.

Mail From: Zynara Date: Saturday 30-Jun-90 12:15 EDT

I am not sure if I memorized 2 Chill Touch for this battle. If I did, when I move in to become a hindrance, I will cast Chill touch first. At least I am not trying to get through the armor, I am just trying to grab on.

Weakening a dragon like this won't show until it is dead but it may help at least.

SUBJ: Water FROM: Zynara 06/30/90 S#: 809810

I try to wake the unconscious slaves any way I can. Once they come to, I encourage those that can, help get the others out of here. I will then help the slaves get away. Just before I separate from them to go back and help the others, I will tell them which way we are headed and that if they head that way, we should catch up with them and be able to give them some protection. I will then return, putting Sheba aside so she doesn't get injured.

Since my fists won't help much with the dragon, I will do what I can for the fallen members of the group. Otherwise I will keep an eye open for a chance to get up on it's back and become a hindrance. (Great place for a first level mage to be right?)

SUBJ: Araduin FROM: Deslock 06/30/90 S#: 486760

I'll head over to assist Cereld with the fallen Dar. Once he has done what he can for the fallen cleric, I'll stay to watch over him, freeing Cereld to do what he can against the dragon. If any of the orcs should feel like hassling us while we are engaged with the lizard, I'll cast my final sleep upon them. If things should begin to look bleak for us, I'll take my quarterstaff in hand and do what I can against the dragon.

SUBJ: VALIDAR FROM: Panther l3 06/30/90 S#: 414039

Validar will struggle to his feet, waving his warhorse away from the battle. He will toss aside his heavy lance and unsheathe his magical sword, brandishing it at the large green reptilian form before him.

"It seems we have tested the mettle of each other, my reptilian foe! Now we shall see the results of a true battle! Prepare to die, Dragon!!"

Despite his brave words, the noble warrior is quite disconcerted by the close proximity of so dangerous a foe. However, the situation does not allow for anything other than a direct confrontation. Steeling himself for a bloody exchange, Validar advances behind sword and shield.

SUBJ: Stephanie

Chokes slightly as she sees the dragon send Dar flying. With a look of grim determination, she moves to the attack. Strangely enough, she cannot think of anything to say... Lightning shall do the talking!

SUBJ: Dar Thaltus.... (R) FROM: Kazaroth 07/02/90 S#: 23527

springs forward with fiery blade emanating from one hand and his Dragon slayer tightly gripped in the other. Seizing upon the beast's initial shock and subsequent hesitation Dar swings mightily and shouts a cry of triumph as the enchanted blade carves a bloody path across the Greenie's hide. This is followed quickly by the searing flameblade as that too scores a hit. Dar's cry swiftly becomes a scream of pain as the lizard's impossibly quick claws strike home, rending armor flesh and bone. Staggered but not dead Dar stumbles forward knowing that his fate was already sealed. His efforts however valiant are not enough to vanquish the beast and his vision turns crimson as the dragon's razor sharp claws flash before him one last time......

SUBJ: Afterlife?? (Dar cont.) FROM: Kazaroth 07/02/90 S#: 20977

His mind suddenly becomes free of the painful sensations that filled his body's every fiber. "So this must be it ....death...I hope that Ehlonna has judged me worthy in light of my recent failure ....." Dar sighs as these and many other thoughts begin to flow through his mind. "I can only hope that the rest of the Seekers can finish that nasty greenie and fare better than I .....in the mean time I suppose I'll await my judgment at the hands of my most revered Lady Ehlonna" Dar makes a mental shrug as a feeling of free falling takes over his senses.....

SUBJ: Eagle (R) FROM: Perpbuster 07/03/90 S#: 802019

When I see Dar go down he runs to him and will bind his wounds as best he can and pray to Heironeous to spare him. After I tend to Dar, I charge the beast with my mace and swear an oath to avenge Dar.

SUBJ: FINROD FROM: SGT STONEY 07/03/90 S#: 27489

Taking quick inventory, Fin discovers that he has quite exhausted his complete repertoire of Magical Incantations... finding no easy way to employ his-ahem-roguish skills, he draws sword and dagger and rushes forward with a cry. He quickly takes up a position on Steph's left, and joins in the attempt to mince the dragon.

"Ha! This critter looks like a big pile of green pond scum to me! Let's skim it off, and feed it to the pigs!"

Great to be back! Looks like I couldn't have picked a more exciting time for my return. Lookin' forward to plenty of slaughter and loot! ::sideways glance at Val:: And, uh, Glory, too!

:)

*Saving a special hug up for Steph*

Spectrum's Comments: Finrod returns! What a sense of timing he has.

SUBJ: Oh... FROM: Modesty1 07/04/90 S#: 9074

My...Gosh! Is Bernice's first reaction upon sighting the green dragon. Her mouth gapes open and her eyes bulge at the size and strength of the beast. She stands unmoving (except to flinch when the dragon bites Validar and slashes Dar) for a full half minute. She then rushes down the stairs, babbling on about how big and strong the dragon is, tries to boast her courage (but doesn't succeed) and mutters about poor Validar and Dar. (Pretty long stairs, huh?)

When she's at the bottom of the stairs, she slows down a bit, proceeding at a trot. The closer she gets, the slower she goes - until she stops about 50 yards away from the battle. The little halfling stands there, shaking, with big tears splashing at her feet, sobbing, 'I'm sorry Dar, but I can't, I just can't...'

Feeling pretty worthless,

::sniff::

Bernice

Gosh it's good to be back, even if she isn't much help! ;)

The Frontier #47

Within the Temple of Hextor, Zynara and Demonslayer attend to the prisoners found. Pouring some water into the mouth of the man with blond hair, he slowly comes around. He stares at her weakly.

'You have... my gratitude... milady. How.. How are my friends?

Strangely enough, the woman remains totally incoherent.

Demonslayer's sharp elven senses detect noise from behind one of the yet unexplored doors. After locating the correct key, the door is opened.

The room beyond is yet another cell. There is a difference as bars split the room. On the door side of the bars is several chairs and a table. One the table is several items. A sack, 50' of rope and a pile of torches catch your attention.

There is movement from behind the bars, as a man comes into sight...

'Puny, little things!', the great green dragon bellows. 'Woodstalker shall destroy you all!!!'

Out in the ruins of the town, the dragon roars it displeasure. The numerous orcs have long since fled, terrified of the occupant of the grove.

Validar prepares to attack the behemoth again, while Finrod, Blod and Stephanie come in on the flank.

While that is going on, Cereld and Eagle circle around. They reach Dar and pull him away from the conflict. Each casts a CLW on him, bringing him back to the land of the living.

Validar connects again with his enchanted blade, further wounding the dragon.

Much to their dismay, the trio of warriors on the other side of the beast miss. The dragon fear great within them. Lightning is held in check by the dragon's scales.

Arocken and Arathron continue to fire arrows, but do not harm Woodstalker. Suddenly, Woodstalker takes to the air, flying out of the town. The eyes of the Seekers following it.

It turns, soaring back towards the battle. It's huge maw opens and it breathes. Chlorine gas blasts forward, engulfing the attackers.

When it clears a moment later, Validar and Blod are laying on the ground. Stephanie and Finrod still stand, although they are choking on the gas.

Woodstalker flies out over the forest, in the distance it turns, preparing to return...

SUBJ: eagle FROM: Perpbuster 07/05/90 S#: 449899

I will quickly thank my god for sparing dars life. After I see that he will live without my help, I will rush to my fallen comrades and try to save them. If I can't do anything I will wait for the dragon and attack with my mace.

SUBJ: FINROD FROM: SGT STONEY 07/07/90 S#: 496536

With a great, rasping effort, Finrod clears his throat and lungs, and lets forth with a croaking call.

"Medic! Let's get some clerics over here; we've got two guys down from the gas! Steph..."

He breaks off racked with a coughing fit.

"...I don't think I can take another of those..."::Hack::"...I'm gonna try to lure him into comin' after me..."::Wheeze::"...by makin' like I'm doin' a spell...You move off to the left, there, and hack 'im from the flank if he falls for it..."

Finrod manages a wink, and waves the Lovely, capable fighter off to the side, then, gathering himself, begins his best, most theatrical, Knock-em-from-the-sky lightning bolt, hoping that woodstalker is knowledgeable enough to recognize it, and to zero in on him, at least for one strafe.

--Finrod the Mad

--Last-ditch Mage

SUBJ: Cereld FROM: Lanceson 07/07/90 S#: 840969

Finishing up healing Dar, Cereld looks up just in time to see two more of his fellow adventurers drop to the ground.

"Eagle, help Steph and Finrod. Try and hold that thing off a little longer. I will help out the others. I'll be with you as soon as I can."

Praying to Heironeous that the others can hold out long enough for him to help them, Cereld will run, first to Blod and then Validar and apply a CLW to each of them.

SUBJ: The newcomer... FROM: GM Falcon 07/07/90 S#: 470769

The man behind the cell looks up at the new arrivals. He looks them over carefully, and then relaxes slightly. "I heard the sounds of battle..", he says. I thought maybe the orcs were coming to finish me off..."

He rattles the bars, and then continues. "Whatever's going on, maybe I can help! I'm Claudius, a mage by trade, and I may have a trick or two or the scum that captured me yet. Interested?"

Spectrum's Comments: Meet GM Falcon, yet another fellow staffer. It's funny, but as time went on more and more staffers joined the game. I think I had 5 other GM's in the game as one point!

SUBJ: VALIDAR FROM: Panther l3 07/07/90 S#: 803527

After Cereld casts the cure spell on Validar and he comes back to consciousness, Validar will roll slowly and painfully to his stomach. With a slow yet purposeful movement, he will raise himself up on his arms to better address the cleric.

"I thought I told you never to do that." If Cereld could see the warrior's face, he would see a tight mirthless smile. Validar will then try to drag himself over to his fallen sword. He manages to grasp it, but the exertion is about all that he can manage. Seeing that his sword is lost to the Seekers for the remainder of the battle, Validar will remove his great helm to give his voice a better chance of finding the ears of his comrades.

"Do not let it fool you, my friends. The emerald wyrm is near death. My blows coupled with those of Dar have it near to death. Continue to fill the sky with missiles. If but one finds its target that creature will bleed no more! Spread out all of you, at least 40 feet apart to avoid its poisonous breath. Once it comes back into range, one true blow will end this battle in victory once again for us."

"Stephanie, if you were to retrieve your bow quickly, you may have time to kill the beast before any more of us fall. It would be a tribute to our lost comrade TigerCat to have his weapon fell this foul creature. Move! Quickly!"

SUBJ: Stephanie

Fin!!! [[*]]

After the cloud passes, Steph is on her knees choking on the foul dragon breath. Her heart plummets seeing Val and Blod lying on the ground so lifeless. She perks up seeing the clerics apply their healing arts to the two.

Her attention is next attracted to the coughing and choking Finrod. Learning of his intent, I quickly move off to give him room.

But then, the barking orders are heard from Validar.

'Bow? What--? The bow Ticat made!'

Understand Validar's plan, I ran as fast as I can to Thunder. Taking the longbow in hand, I nock an arrow and take aim at the dragon...

Spectrum's Comments: Yes, finally, Steph is going to make use of Ticat's bow! Took long enough.

SUBJ: Arocken FROM: Wildchilde 07/08/90 S#: 836129

As soon as the large beast gets close enough to the ground I will run out from my cover with my sword and dagger draw and plunge both blades into the beast.

SUBJ: Bernice FROM: Modesty1 07/09/90 S#: 9616

Seeing her comrades fall to the gas has a rather unusual effect on Bernie. Rather than hiding behind the largest rock or bush she can find, her face screws up in a mask of concentration. Slowly she reaches for her sling and bullets. Even before the dragon is within range, she is firing bullets at him. 'Take THAT! And THAT! You overgrown lizard!' she screams incoherently. Her aim is shaky and tears still blur her vision, but this halfling has had ENOUGH!

On the verge of hysteria,

Bernice

SUBJ: To the captive FROM: Zynara 07/11/90 S#: 96577

"Sir, some of your comrades are not in good shape, we are still finding others. My companion just went off to check another door. I need your help in getting those in here away from here. The rest of the group I am with is outside fighting something very big and they could use a hand or two as soon as we get everyone away. Please speed is of the essence."

With that I go check on the new find. Seeing the man in reasonably good shape, "Quick, get him out of there and up to help the others. Things are quieting down upstairs and I don't think it is because the others are having no problems. If he can't fight, give him the keys and get him helping the others in here."

Talking aloud to myself, "I hate it when you try to help others and get left out of the fun. I wonder what they are fighting now?

If the captives are finally on the move, I will go outside and see what is going on. When I see the dragon I will take cover back in the temple.

"I am not ready for this. Next time I get up on the other side of the bed because this side is the wrong one."

I will then look around for something I might be able to throw and hit the dragon with. As it passes, I will step out and throw as hard as I can and duck back into the temple.

Spectrum's Comments: Next time, the conclusion of the battle with Woodstalker!!
