The Frontier #42
Plans have been made for the attack on the Orc city. In the predawn light, the final preparations are made. Mounting up, you ride to a position to northeast. The sun is just appearing over the forest as A group sneaks into the camp.
Since there is so much going on, and since you are divided into three groups, I've decided to divide the post into 3 parts. The chart below will show which letter group you are in. This will correspond to the post letter. Thus group B is The Frontier 42B post.
Group A - Arathron, Bernice, Dar Thaltus, Kaan and Rathis
Group B - Finrod, Araduin, Eagle, Arocken and Valgrin
Group C - Blod, Cereld, Stephanie, Kamriell, Zynara, Telinos, Demonslayer and Validar.
Group A proceed onward to the next screen, the rest of you to your own post! :)
Spectrum's Comments: As noted above, I did split the post into 3 separate files. In fact, I covered multiple posts in those files. Frontier #42A ended up covering posts #42-45 for group A. In Frontier #46 the groups were all back in the same post. For this reposting, I've split the files up again to make them more coherent to the reader. First up will be Frontier #42A, then B, and then C. Then will come Frontier #43A, then B, and C. Each section was updated as necessary. And now the fun begins!
Cautiously, Group A moves into the Orc city. All is quiet, and only a few wandering orcs are seen. They are easily avoided.
Dar is the first to reach the tower, shortly followed by Bernice. Kaan and Arathron follow over the next few minutes. More minutes pass and Rathis is nowhere to be seen.
Deciding not to wait any longer, Kaan casts his Phantasmal Force. At almost the same time Dar casts his Obscurment.
Mist begins to form around the tower, but not before a group of 5 orcs notice the intruders.
Noise and movement can be heard within the tower itself.
SUBJ: GM Notes:
What are you going to do? The orcs outside the tower are 70' away. You can be inside the tower long before they reach you.
Kaan, the potions elude your Bardic Lore talent. They, more then likely, have no interesting history.
SUBJ: Arathron FROM: RAD DWEEBE 05/31/90 S#: 61319
I think we should take on the orcs; I want to have a good fight.
If we do, I will attempt to hide or move silently and sneak up on them if I can, and if I don't feel safe about it, I will attack head on with two weapons if OK.
SUBJ: Dar Thaltus..... FROM: Kazaroth 06/01/90 S#: 520951
eyes narrow as his hisses sternly to Arathron. "The Tower! Remember...that is our PRIMARY mission." Glancing quickly around at the other arrivals Dar motions them all into the tower. "We've no more time to wait for Rathis..... Either he is dead or been captured. We cannot help him now in any event. Later perhaps.....for now the others are depending on us to take this tower and provide missile cover after doing so."
"Arathron....you and Kaan will remain by the inside of this door.....try to barricade it if possible....if not... keep those slugs out by whatever means necessary. Stealth is not needed now and remember the mist restricts ALL FORMS of vision to a few feet. Bernice...with me! We will continue upward and remove any others. One last thing Arathron and Kaan.......once the entrance is secure ....either through the death of the orcs or PREFERABLY through blocking the door....come up after Bernice and I both for support reasons and so that you can contribute to the missile barrages."
Dar gives them each a look of determination and confidence. "Now...to your areas!" Dar pauses and quickly incants his STALK spell. "Bernice...you will follow me at a discreet distance. Together I'm sure we can handle anything above." With that Dar turns and moves upward quickly to spy out that which lies ahead......
SUBJ: Bernice.... FROM: Modesty1 06/01/90 S#: 474711
Bernice heaves a sigh of relief upon arriving at the tower. She leans against the wall, breathing heavily. Her mind is racing, and she is positively aching to tell the story of her harrowing journey. However, the little bit of maturity this adventuring has given her holds her back. She instead squeezes Dar's hand and smiles timidly.
She likes Dar's plan better than the other, preferring the unknown to a band of charging orcs. Once inside, she quietly begs everyone to hurry and bar the door, lending her small strength to the task.
She also likes the idea of FOLLOWING Dar up the stairs. She beams with pride when Dar hints at the strength of their 'team', but her heart is beating like a rabbits as she silently follows him up the stairs. 'Let is be empty, oh, please, let it be empty.' she thinks to herself. She mentally reminds herself to take up religion SOON. A dagger is clenched in her hot and sweaty little hand.
Made it this far,
Bernie
SUBJ: Kaan FROM: Xent6 06/02/90 S#: 790529
"@*!$$, I told you cast it earlier, but you would not listen. Damn. Hurry up; we will be after you in a minute. I run in the building and start pushing the door shut. Come on " Ugh " Help me!". As soon as the door is closed I will put the bar on and look for some thing to block it. Should the Orcs arrive before we close the door, I will take cover and fire my sling at them. I will switch to my sword later. If more Orcs come, I will cast my SLEEP spell at the Orcs. Once the door is bared I will run upstairs and then listen. Do I hear fighting? If yes I run in that direction. If not I will sneak up the stairs with the sword in my hand.
GM Notes
Everyone rushes into the tower and slams the door. While Kaan and Arathron barricade the door, Dar casts his Stalk spell and moves up the stairs. Bernice follows a short distance behind.
The stairs lead up to a landing, there two orcs are moving down the stairs.
Dar surprises them; slaying one before either orc knows that he is there. It takes the combined effort of Dar and Bernice to bring down the other orc.
Stairs continue on, leading to the roof of the tower. Orc voices can be heard up there.
Down below, Arathron has secured the door. The orcs pound on it, but cannot break it down.
SUBJ: Dar Thaltus.... (R) FROM: Kazaroth 06/05/90 S#: 28038
glides stealthily up the stairway with Bernice not too far behind. Hearing the noise of the oncoming orcs Dar quickly ducks to the side then springs forward to engage them. A pair it turns out as he quickly slays one with a sweep of his enchanted longsword. The second orc, having a chance to put up his guard is more of a hassle.....until the timely arrival of Bernice. Dar smiles openly at the orc as the foul creature attacks. It never gets a chance to understand the meaning of the gesture as Bernie swings at it from behind and Dar attacks from the front. Felling the evil one swiftly Dar pauses only long enough to give Bernie a quick thumbs-up and flash a grin then he spins and heads upstairs once again.
Dar will take a shortsword for his left hand if one is present from the two orcs. Also...Dar is aware of the fact that his STALK spell is rendered ineffective after attacking the two orcs and will utilize his normal stealth abilities from that point forth. Onward to face the (as yet) unknown......
SUBJ: Bernie... FROM: Modesty1 06/05/90 S#: 465039
Almost jumps out of her skin at the sight of the two orcs, but recovers in time to assist in the slaying of the second. She shudders a bit and then smiles at Dar and whispers 'Piece a' cake!' There's a little more confidence in her step as she follows Dar to the sounds of their next victims.
Behind you all the way Dar!
Bernice
SUBJ: Kaan FROM: Xent6 06/06/90 S#: 524174
"Nice work, Dar and Kaan. The door is blocked. Nothing to worry about."
I sneak upstairs, my sword in my hand. When I see the two dead orcs I kneel real fast and pick up their weapons and gold. Then I hurry on. "Come on A..., let's get upstairs and give cover to the other groups."
Spectrum's Comments: Now on to Group B.
Frontier 42B-
At the sign of the ball of fire appearing in the air, Group B, using Silence, moves into the city.
The group is proceeding down the area between the Temple and the Slaves building when they are spotted by a group of 6 orcs. They were originally running to investigate the fireball in the sky, when by chance they noticed your group.
The orcs are 40' away and closing fast!
SUBJ: Arocken FROM: Wildchilde 05/31/90 S#: 470284
::Before we embark I will ask the parties spell casters to give me a hand signal when they want me to heave the rock.::
::look back at party checking for signal if I don't get anything, and I don't expect one I will draw forth my bow and arrows and start firing at the orcs, I will look for some cover like an alley or trash heap to hide behind,::
(Spell casters position yourselves away from me as I have the stone)
SUBJ: Araduin FROM: Deslock 06/01/90 S#: 508538
I'll signal Arocken to head to the left, while I head off to the right. Once clear of the effects of the silence stone, I shall cast sleep upon the charging orcs. Hopefully this will take care of them all, or enough such that the remainder can be quickly dispatched. Once they're all dealt with, I'll signal everyone to get cracking, we've got to get into position, or this whole plan will fall apart.
SUBJ: Valgrin FROM: Vanter 06/02/90 S#: 824732
He lets the other deal with the orcs. He will ready his blade and once the orcs are dealt with he will stay in the back of the group to guard the rear.
GM Notes:
Araduin hits the advancing orcs with his Sleep spell, dropping all of them. The sleeping orcs are then dealt with.
The group continues on, unhindered. They cast the Webs as directed, blocking off portions of the town.
Soon a group of orcs can be seen rushing into the one clear path. They number about 20.
Now what?
SUBJ: Arocken FROM: Wildchilde 06/04/90 S#: 2701
::Looks back and checks for the signal:: If I don't get it I will go to the right of the alley and draw my bow and begin to fire until they get into range where I will draw my long sword and daggers and fight hand to hand. I will keep Kortul back until the orcs are at hand then let him loose into the group.
SUBJ: Araduin FROM: Deslock 06/04/90 S#: 41281
I give Arocken the signal, and prepare to cast a spell.
- Twenty? No point in casting the Sphere yet, sleep should do for this lot. -
I cast my spell once Arocken has cast the stone amidst the orcs.
"Come, my friends, there are many orcs yet to be slain, but we may make a good start here!"
After casting my spell, I ready my quarterstaff.
Post Continued:
As the orcs rush forward, Group B settles into place. Arocken fires into the midst of the onrushing orcs while Araduin casts his sleep spell. The first five in the group drop to the group.
The orcs continue their rush as Finrod steps forward and a vivid, fan-shaped spray of bright colors springs forth from his hand. Four more of the advancing group is removed. Finally, Eagle points the wand with the orcs a mere 10 feet away and speaks the command words. A pale amber light shoots out and bathes the entire pathway. Under the effects of the fear spell, all but two of the orcs drop their weapons and flee in panic.
The last two orcs see their particular plight and decide on their own that it may be better to join their fleeing comrades and rush away as well. Arocken continues to fire arrows at the orcs before the move around a building and manages to drop one.
After a few moments, giving everyone time to deal with the unconscious orcs however you see fit, the group can see and hear a large group of orcs which seem to be massing for another attack. They number well over fifty individuals from what you can tell.
The avenue that leads your way is about 15 feet wide and 80 feet long. The main force seems to be coming straightforward again, while some few are carrying torches and moving towards the interposing webs.
SUBJ: Araduin (R) FROM: Deslock 06/07/90 S#: 816426
The sleeping and unconscious orcs shall be dealt with terminally.
- This would seem to be an opportune time for my flaming sphere. -
I'll cast my spell and guide the sphere into the mass of the orcs, taking care to keep it away from the webbing.
SUBJ: Eagle FROM: Perpbuster 06/07/90 S#: 482608
I will see if there is any vegetation around the orcs and if there is I will cast my entangle spell. And right before I go into battle I will cast a Protection from evil on myself. I will try the wand again and if it seems to be working well I will use it freely, if not I will rush into battle crying Heironeous name and kill as many as possible.
SUBJ: Arocken FROM: Wildchilde 06/08/90 S#: 520626
I will release Kortul and let him join in the fray. And will continue firing arrows until such a time that Melee weapons will become necessary. Then I will draw my dagger and long sword and prepare for battle.
Spectrum's Comments: And finally Group C.
Frontier 42C-
The other groups have already gone to the attack as the last group mounts up.
Cereld casts Silence on Stephanie and you are off.
Group B has disappeared from sight, moving between the slaves' quarters and the temple.
Movement is seen from behind the temple, around the stables. A small group of orcs look skyward, at the fireball.
They notice the approaching riders and scatter.
Note: The silence has a limited area of effect making it impossible for all 8 of you ride within it's effects at full charge.
Now what?
SUBJ: Kamreill FROM: Kid Texas 05/31/90 S#: 128484
::armorless::
Well, I suppose that I'll go inside the temple, and if no one is there, look around for anything relevant. If someone IS there, I will try and sneak up on 'em, and cut as many down as I can before chugging my potion, I will also lay hands on myself if the need arises.
The KId/Kamreill
SUBJ: Stephanie
Grins at Cerelds plan.
'I won't mind making many of the priests permanently silent!'
Being silenced, Steph doesn't have much to say about what is happening. If the others pursue the orcs, I'll help them. Otherwise, I too will enter the temple.
SUBJ: VALIDAR FROM: Panther l3 06/04/90 S#: 47277
First of all just a short note: I was not completely explicit in the plan it seems and Kaan ended up getting switched from group B to A by mistake. Apparently, it hasn't caused too many problems, so we'll just ride it out as written by MAD.
Validar will decline Cereld's offer of healing.
"I am clearly in no danger of this injury affecting me in this battle. Save your strength for after the battle. Those soulless slugs are in more danger than I, for certain. Thank you for your concern, in any case."
Once in the fortification and riding at the fore of the formation, Validar will ignore the scattering orcs, as he feels that the only true target of this attack resides within the foul temple up ahead. Validar will spur his mount up the steps to the vile building and lower his lance at the front door, attempting to blast the rotting doors off their hinges! With that completed, Validar will dismount and proceed into the temple to dispense his particular form of vengeance, killing all who are seen.
SUBJ: Blod... FROM: Begal 06/06/90 S#: 52184
I will follow Validar into the temple, attacking anything looking evil, concentrating on priests.
SUBJ: Cereld (R) FROM: Lanceson 06/06/90 S#: 21489
"Forget the orcs, on to the priests!!" Cereld will ride right by the orcs following Validar into the temple. If one of the orcs does happen to get too close as he rides by, Cereld will let him feel the blade of his axe slice through his throat (geez getting a little graphic here kiddies).
SUBJ: demonslayer FROM: Ace37 06/06/90 S#: 486750
demonslayer shall draw his longsword and follow the others into the temple.
Spectrum's Comments: And now back to the beginning with A Group.
The Frontier # 43A
The stairs lead straight up to the roof. Dar slips silently up the stairs, but an orc is standing right there and sees him and Bernie. As Dar steps forward to get the roof's footing under him, two of the four orcs there engage him. Meanwhile, Bernie comes up behind, but has an orc opponent of her own.
The two heroes attack first, but the orcs evade the blows. One orc wounds Dar with his sword. The battle continues on and the tables turn in the heroes favor. Dar kills one orc and Bernie wounds her opponent as well. Dar is wounded again as Kaan and Arathron rush onto the scene.
Dar's opponent tries to switch targets and slices Kaan with his axe, but Dar uses the opportunity to kill this orc as well. Meanwhile, Arathron moves to help Bernie finish of her foe.
The final orc sees himself outnumbered four to one and drops his axe to the ground and steps back, eyeing you all nervously.
At the bottom of the tower, you can still hear orcs pounding on the door.
Hit Points:
Dar 23 of 28
Kaan 10 of 15
SUBJ: Bernice.... (R) FROM: Modesty1 06/07/90 S#: 51587
Not being the kind of halfling to rush into a fight anyways, Bernice eyes the remaining orc for a few moments. Seeing the panicky look in his eyes, she feels a kind of empathy with him. But the fact that seconds earlier he would have been glad to slice her in two overrides her concern.
'I guess killing him would be the way to go, Dar. I mean, what would we do with him alive? Course I couldn't do it! Stomach's still a little queasy. But it's your decision, you being the senior party member. Yep, up to you...but I can't see keeping him alive...' Bernice rattles on until someone stops her. She is clearly a tad nervous about this. She'll turn her head if someone does kill the orc. Bernie will make a pathetic joke about it afterwards, to show her 'lack of concern'.
See you later,
Bernice
SUBJ: Orcish anyone? (Dar) FROM: Kazaroth 06/07/90 S#: 501198
While heaving a short sigh of relief Dar looks at the captive orc. "Hmmm... information may be gained from this one." he mutters under breath. Then to the orc in common..."Do you understand me?" and in elven the same thing. If Dar gets a positive answer from the vile humanoid then he will first demand that the orc submit to being tied up then will begin a brief interrogation. Or, on the off chance that another party member understands orcish, Dar will proceed as above through the newly appointed interpreter. If the orc refuses them Dar will threaten to end its life immediately. If that ploy does not succeed then Dar will hint at terrible tortures to be endured if it doesn't comply with him then a VERY slow death. Should all of the above fail then Dar will simply knock the orc unconscious with the pommel of his sword and bind the foul being up. (If anyone in the group possesses rope skill then that character will do the binding. otherwise Dar will do it himself.)
Interrogating the orc if possible Dar will quickly ask for details about the priests' living quarters, their current whereabouts, the Temple and any hidden surprises that might be about i.e. special shock troops, reinforcements, tricks, traps etc. Finally, after milking the orc for all the strategic info that he can Dar will ask but one more question....."Who or What presides in the grove of trees?" After finishing the interrogation Dar will draw forth his enchanted blade and if possible cause it to emit its greenish hue. He will then chant in a somewhat loud voice and point its tip at the orc. Dar will then explain that any lies that the orc may have told him will be revealed to him as such unless the orc quickly recants and tells the truth. Dar will also clearly indicate death to be the punishment for telling said falsehoods. Regardless of the results Dar will knock the orc unconscious and bind him as above and decide what to do from there.
SUBJ: Kaan FROM: Xent6 06/09/90 S#: 475665
I rip a strip of cloth of my shirt and bind the cut in my shoulder. Then I will turn to the Orc and try to talk to him. Maybe I can pick some words up with my Barden Talent. At any hostile move I will kill the Orc. Once the Orcs downstairs break through I will take the bodies of their dead comrades and throw them down the stairs, to slow and demoralize them. As soon as we are finished with the Orc, I will go to the window and look down to find out what is going on. I will fire at Orcs if I can see any.
Post Continued
The orc panics! Turning, he leaps from the tower, plummeting into the mists below. You all hear a sickening thud.
Surveying the situation from the top of the tower, you can see that Group C has entered the temple.
Group B has erected the webs and repelled a small group of orcs. However, a much larger group is massing. A main group of about 50 orcs is rushing into the only opening available. Several smaller groups are attempting to circle around the obstructions to come in from the rear. Yet another group of orcs, bearing torches advance to the webs.
Now what?
SUBJ: Kaan FROM: Xent6 06/12/90 S#: 488232
I lean out of the window. I am shocked when I see that many Orcs in one spot.
" Dar, Bernice, Arthis, come over look at this. At least 200 Orcs. We have to help our friends." Hastily I free my little sling from the belt and pull the string back. Right into the front row of the Orcs. (At any leaders I can see.) How far are the Orcs away? I try to figure if I could throw things in the crowd. I quickly reload and fire again. And again and again until I run out of bullets or until I hear something at the stairs. In that case I will throw the dead Orcs down. (^ last post)
The Frontier #43B
Seeing the advancing orcs, the Seekers prepare to repulse them. Eagle casts Protection from Evil on himself. Arocken let's his war dog loose. Araduin summons a Flaming Sphere.
Finally, the orcs charge to the attack!
Araduin's Flaming Sphere greets 3 of the orcs, igniting them.
Arocken bows down 2 more, while Kortul wrestles with another.
Using the wand, Eagle let's the orcs have it. Again the fear ray shoots out, covering the attackers. Most of them flee, but some 15 orcs remain, unaffected. On particularly large orc appears to be the tribal chief.
Kortul was inadvertently caught in the Fear ray and ran off yelping...
Now what?
SUBJ: Arocken FROM: Wildchilde 06/10/90 S#: 474468

Frontier #43C
Validar leads the charge into the temple, smashing the unstable doors off their hinges. They drop with a soundless crash, as Group C dismounts and steps into the temple.
A twenty-foot wide hall leads inward for about thirty feet, ending in a railing. At the end of the hall, steps go down to the left and right. Still under the effects of the silence spell, the group moves forward quickly to the railing.
The area is similar to the last temple of Hextor that was raided, but without the tiered effect and is not open to the second floor. However, this information is not what first registers in the minds of the Seekers, for a hideous and bizarre sight greets them.
Three bodies are strapped to an inclined slab in a rough semi-circle. Each of the bodies has had numerous wounds made to allow the draining of these unfortunate souls blood. It has run down and been collected in a large bubbling cauldron at the center of the slabs. A table has been set up on the other side of the bodies and numerous strange looking ingredients are scattered about on it. Kamreill can most definitely detect evil!
Validar motions to Cereld to take half of the group and head down the stairs to the right, while he leads Demonslayer, Kamreill and Telinos down the left stairs.
At the bottom of the stairs, it opens up to a large area, roughly 50 X 60, which is symmetrical. The stairs end at a landing that opens into this area. Each landing has a door at the bottom and there is also a door just beyond each landing. A third door on each side is about 30 feet further up on the same wall. The slabs and cauldron are on the far end of this room.
Validar's group hears a low moaning issuing from the middle door to their side. It is all quiet on the other side however.
Gruesome, isn't it?

Post Continued
The Seekers begin to explore the inner temple...
Kam shoulders the door open, the one from which the groaning was heard. The room beyond appears to be a cell. A beautiful young woman is chained to the wall by her wrists. She is slumped against the wall. She is bruised and battered, her clothing ragged. Her hair is brown.
Validar forces a nearby door open. Sword drawn, he enters what must be a torture chamber. No one is in the room.
On the other side of the room, Stephanie kicks another door open. Her, Zynara and Blod cautiously enter. Inside is another cell. A muscular man with flowing blond hair is chained to the wall, along with a short, black haired man. Both appear to have suffered greatly in the priests' hands. Both are unconscious.
Now what?
SUBJ: Cereld FROM: Lanceson 06/10/90 S#: 28284
The sight of all that he sees in this temple is more than the priest of Heironeous can bear. A fit of rage comes across the face of the usually quite calm and rational cleric. Cereld storms out of the cell and proceeds heedlessly for the cauldron. Then using the head of his axe, for leverage and to prevent his little fingers from being burned, Cereld attempts to tip over the pot spilling its gruesome contents. "Where are you foul brethren of Hextor? Come out and show your slimy faces and feel the wrath of one of Heironeous's servants. Come meet the mettle of one who can fight back and not innocents who could not stand up to your evil ways." Cereld is quite out of control right now. If the clerics do not show themselves, Cereld will proceed to desecrate the altar until they make their presence known. When they are seen, Cereld will rush forward like a man possessed screaming Heironeous help me destroy this vermin and avenge those whose lives they have stolen here." (Yes Cereld is not a happy camper boys and girls).
SUBJ: Stephanie
We may not have been able to save those unfortunates by the altar, but these men we can. Steph moves towards the first man. My, he is a handsome one. Grabbing the chains that hold him, I'll first attempt to snap them. If that fails, I'll then attempt to rip them out of the wall. Blod's strength would be most appreciated in this task.
That task complete, I'll reenter the temple area and see Cereld freaking out. Hmmm, so the good priest does have a berserker's rage to him. I'll have for now, awaiting the arrival of the priests. Yes, Lightning shall taste blood this day.
SUBJ: Kamreill FROM: DM Texas 06/11/90 S#: 480113

I will see if the woman that I've encountered radiates a deowmer of evil, if she doesn't, I'll lay hands on her. If she becomes conscious immediately, I'll ask her where the priests are. If she doesn't know, I'm gonna run out into the grove and hack everyone I see down (If they're not with us :D)
"DOWN WITH THE SMURFS!!!!!!!!!!!"
The disgruntled Kamreill
SUBJ: VALIDAR FROM: Panther l3 06/11/90 S#: 13454
Seeing the empty room, Validar will back out into the main room. As Kamreill and Telinos deal with the woman, he will move to the final door on this wall and burst it open, like the last, and enter, sword drawn and ready and shield raised.
SUBJ: Blod... FROM: Begal 06/12/90 S#: 126623
Seeing all this evil, Blod becomes very quiet (despite the fact he is inside the silence). He moves over to Cereld and stands ready with his 2-handed sword. He appears calm but is very upset by what he has seen. If no priests come forth, he will follow Cereld to wherever he goes.
Spectrum's Comments: That's all for this time out. The battle continues in the next file!
