The Frontier #41
In pursuit of the goblin army, the Seekers have found a ruined city. While the main group rests in a secluded section of the forest, a party of scouts goes to reconnoiter the ruins. Another smaller group goes deeper into the forest, hunting for food.
Roughly two and a half hours pass before the scouts start to return. They had split up into one and two person groups.
Pooling the information from all the scouts, the following is determined.
The city is inhabitant by Orcs. They number over 150. There is a slave labor force of over 30 humans and demi-humans. There are also seems to be a contingent of Priests of Hextor. At least 6 of them were seen.
The city itself is mostly in disrepair. A 10' high stonewall surrounds the city, but has crumbled and fallen in many spots. The southern and eastern sides being in the worst shape. Only 2 of 8 watchtowers still stand. One is along the south wall, the other the western wall. Bands of orcs lackadaisically patrol the interior of the city. They don't appear to go outside the city walls.
The orcs appear to live in the southeast portion of the city. The southwest portion of the city has been converted to grow crops, mostly grains.
There are six large buildings that appear to be in good repair. They all have orc guards near then. Of the six, one appears to be the slaves quarters, the other a stable. A temple dedicated to Hextor dominates the northeast portion of the city.
Roughly in the center of the city is a wooded grove. While Dar was watching from the hills behind the city, a procession of Hextorites came to the grove and appeared to be arguing with something within the grove. What they were talking to could not be seen.
No one got close enough to hear anything.
Not to long after that, the hunters return with 3 large turkeys and a rabbit for Sheba.
GM Notes: The city looks something like this...

Did my detect evil search produce any results? Huh? Huh? Huh?
I say that if we choose to liberate this forsaken city, A small party should go from the north, free the slaves, Free the animals in the stables to create a frenzied air, while a larger party attacks the hopefully confused orcs from the south. We need to use good defensive spells like sleep and Phantasmal Force when we attack. All the people in the party who still use mounts should lead the attack, or lend their mounts to willing people. If we use this strategy, I will volunteer for the lead attack on the south. Meanwhile, while Validar rejects this plan, I will go around and get more leaves, flowers and weeds and mince them up and place them in my backpack. When attacking, I will use my battle Axe (griffcleaver.) :)
Spectrum's Comments: Considering that a paladin's Detect Evil ability only has a range of 60' and that he was no where near the ruins and spent most of last post up a tree, the odds of him Detecting Evil were virtually non-existent. Boy, this guy was annoying.

What about drawing the orcs out of the city somehow so they don't have the advantage of fortification? This area is heavily forested, right? Well, I prefer guerilla warfare to tactical anyway, and it would be much easier to pick the orcs off one by one anyway.

(Yes I am back. Before I post I think I owe everyone a little explanation as to my sudden disappearance. To put it simply, I was so overworked between finals and papers due and work, that I did not have one spare minute in the past four weeks. Yes I am extremely brain dead at this moment and in the need of some severe role-playing as a release. I have talked with Panther and discussed the return of Cereld to thinking status. I do not think it would be fair for me to suddenly come back as party leader especially due to the fine job that Validar has done. I have asked him if it would be ok for us to become co-party leaders however, and this seems fitting especially because this group seems to be getting bigger and bigger every moment. I think we would both appreciate everyone's input in this decision. As I said I am sorry if my leave caused any confusion, I am very glad to finally return. Now on to my post.)
"Dar, I know that our primary goal right now is to return to Gateway and stop the goblins, but I feel it would be a mistake to not destroy this base and free these slaves first. Forget for the moment that I am a priest of Heironeous and sworn to destroy the foul temples of Hextor wherever I find them. Forget for a minute that there are slaves in that city. But instead think of what Gateway will be like even if we arrive to help save it. Leaving these orcs behind to gather up their forces and perform another counterstrike on Gateway so soon, which is what I believe would happen unless we were able to slay EVERY single goblin so none could report back. From the descriptions given of the orc camp, although I don't expect it to be a stroll in the meadows, with careful planning, we should be able to take out the entire camp fairly quickly. There we could also find supplies, not just those suited for the orcs, but food fit for the human priests in that city. Kamreill is right about using the illusionary abilities of this party to create mass confusion down there. With the archers in the trees so close to the city limits, the orcs would be whittled down before they could even organize themselves. And with a small band of us sneaking into the city itself, we could keep the priests busy until the main force of our group comes crashing in to administer the final killing blow. Although this is only a rough idea of a plan, what does everyone think about it?"
SUBJ: Stephanie
'Welcome back, good cleric! Congrat's Val! Hard to believe that this came about seeing how we started out...'
'Aye, Cereld, I wouldn't mind whittlin' down a few more of this vile priests. Present your plan.'
Spectrum's Comments: Yeah, it is hard to believe considering how everything started out.
GM Notes:
Kaan, what weapons do you propose to give the slaves? The group is rather under stocked as it is.
The buildings in the town are mostly built of stone. Those that do have roofs and covered with hay. Only the temple is entirely stone. Many of the orc dwellings have no roofs at all.
Kam, I would also question a few things about your characters ideals. Paldinhood is a very strict life and you are flirting on the board line. Your knowledge of mage magic would be very limited at best. Guerilla warfare tactics seem more to a ranger's suit. It seems to me that a paladin would cringe at such tactics. A paladin is a noble and heroic warrior, the symbol of that is right and true in the world. As such, you have high ideals that must be maintained at all times.
I'm not trying to tell you how to run your character, but there are guidelines. Perhaps paladinhood is not suited for you.
Spectrum's Comments: I finally said something about Kam's behavior. Both paladin and druid are very strict classes when it comes to behavior. Kam tended to act like a ranger, begging the question why didn't he just play a ranger? Now a days in my games paladin's need to choose which god they serve which further indicates their behavior. A paladin of Heironeous is not necessarily the same as a paladin of Mystra or Azrella.

I do agree with Cereld's plan for the destruction of the city, and I too am a priest of Heironeous, but we should still go fer the goblins...Dealing with the city... hmmm...We need to question the leader of the orcs to see if he knows of the goblin army....
hmmm... For the illusion, what about a HUGE fomorian Giant riding on a HUGE griffon? We've seen them both, so the illusions will be quite accurate. Does anyone speak (grunt?) orcish?
Hmmmm.. We need to take inventory of all the weapons and spells before we go into combat. I have a two handed sword, a footman's mace, and a battle Axe. If we have an accurate catalog of the weapons and spells, we could more effectively plan the attack.

"I agree with Dar Thaltus that the defense of Gateway is of primary importance. However, I feel that the destruction of this fortification will go a long way towards that goal. If those of you who were among us when we laid waste to that last foul temple would remember, they were the ones behind the goblinoid advance. I believe that those priests are there to assemble more forces for the Gateway assault. We could do much damage to the main force were these expected reinforcements to not arrive at the battlefield."
"Also, in taking with the scouts, it seems that young and non-fighting members who would abound if this were a simple orc village are noticeably absent. Therefore, I think it is best to assume that this is indeed an armed outpost, regardless of their lazy attitude. Remember we are still some ways from the Cynalon border."
"I believe that the orcs are not the true foe here, but those soulless slugs that are organizing this foul army. Therefore, I suggest that the temple is the main focus of our attack."
"We could still use the archer cover, but from inside the city. With only two watchtowers, the northeast section of the city is the most accessible. As their is only 1 patrol, it would be easy to avoid them and the towers and get those with missile weapons into the town from the foothills and have them set up at points to the south of the temple."
"Then when they were in place, a main body of attackers could rush in assaulting the temple. Such an attack would likely draw the attention of the orcs and our archers could easily ambush the humanoids."
"Finally, a third group could move in from the south in an attempt to either squeeze the orcs between them and then archers, or to rout them if the archers were to force the orcs to retreat."

Those near by can hear me saying to myself, "This quiet one seems to temper Validar into a very good leader. Then again, it takes two too succeed usually in anything."
When things start going for attacking the orc village, I listen closely. When Validar give his plan, I wait until there is a break then, "Excuse me Validar. Your plan sounds like a real sound one. Not being familiar with the power this group welds though, if this is the build up of an orc army, wouldn't all hundred and fifty come running at once if there was an attack along with all the priests? Not to say this group couldn't kill that many but wouldn't the numbers overwhelm us especially if we are divided into three groups as you suggest? Wouldn't it be better to sneak in and take the head off from this rabble and then get out of there? Without the priest to lead them, wouldn't it be safe to say they would fall apart as an organized group with a purpose? This is only me speaking but on this I will follow you lead."
If asked what I can contribute, I will respond, "Not much. I am a pretty good boxer and the only combat spell I have is known as Chill Touch. It makes a good combination with my fighting. I do have a minor protection spell in effect but it is only minor and these bracers aren't much for protection."
Later to Kamreill, "This time Validar seems to have gained some wisdom from the silent one. I also apologize for clouding your mind and leading you from your calling. We can still be friends I hope." For everyone's information, Lanceson, MAD and I had an informal meeting over the weekend and put together a plan of action. We drew upon the ideas and suggestions of everyone and tried to place each member where they would be the most beneficial in fulfilling this plan.
If ANYONE has any problems with this plan, please let me or Lanceson know immediately. It will be difficult at best to change anything once underway and MAD posts on Thursday, so time is limited. Thanks for everyone's attention on this matter.
Spectrum's Comments: As Panther noted, we all got together in a chat room and they ironed out their strategy while I fielded questions. A much faster way to work out something of this scale!
SUBJ: VALIDAR (R) FROM: Panther13 05/29/90 S#: 794543
Once everyone is rounded up and assembled, Validar will address the entire group for himself and Cereld.
"Cereld and I have contemplated the situation and taken everyone's suggestion into account in formulating the following plan. First of all we will be seperated into three groups. Group A will consist of Arathron, Bernice, Dar Thaltus and Rathis. Group B will consist of Finrod, Kaan, Araduin, Eagle, Arocken, and Valgrin. Finally, group C will be the remainder of us: Blod, Cereld, Stephanie, Kamreill, Zynara, Telinos, Demonslayer, and myself."
"We have decided that the only safe entrance to this fortification is from the northeast. Therefore, we will all travel around the foothills and make our assault from there. Group A will proceed into the battle zone first. Stealth will be of the utmost importance here. The main objective of this group will be the taking of the watchtower in the western section of the fortification."
"We will give this group time to reach a point near the tower when Kaan will use his Phantasmal Force to create the illusion of a huge ball of fire in the sky. Its only need is to draw attention. Dar will then move to within fifteen feet of the tower and cast his obscurement spell. This will give the group safer passage into the tower and also supply cover for group B later. If necessary, other members of group A may have to further draw the attention of the orcs in the tower by firing upon them. Once the fog is in place, the group will proceed to take the tower, disposing of the orcs. That is the main objective. Once in control of the tower, any cover fire will help, and we will provide Arathron with Telinos' longbow and some flaming arrows to rain down upon the buildings, causing further havoc."
"Group B will be given a small stone with a silence spell cast on it to assist them in moving into the fortification next. Between it and the probable confusion caused by the fireball, fog, and flaming arrows, this group should be able to move into a position near the center of the town. Their first objective will be to cast their web spells amongst the buildings clustered there, cutting off most of the reinforcements of the orcs. This will channel their forces into one main avenue, besides those that try to stumble through the obscurement. This force has suitable weapon skills and magicks to handle this job well, we believe. A personal suggestion might be to have Araduin's flaming sphere ready should any patrol or the guards near the stable try to stop this group before reaching the objective point. The member of this group who carries the silence stone might also cast it into the midst of the orcs, possibly causing more confusion amongst them, but in any case, it must be gotten rid of to allow the spellcasters to ply their trade."
SUBJ: VALIDAR (cont.) (R) FROM: Panther13 05/29/90 S#: 807283
"Finally, group C, also utilizing the benefits of a silence spell, will charge into the fray on mounts and assault the temple itself. Our objective is the simplest in theory: simply kill anything that moves."
"I would point out that everyone, but mostly group B in particular, keep in mind that there is something in the grove. With luck, whatever it is will not come into play. In any case, as we have NO idea what it may be, if anything, we cannot prepare for it and must be able to adapt on the spur of the moment. Keep this in the back of your thoughts!"
"If anyone has any objections or questions, please speak up directly. Time is of the essence. We will attack in the morning when the orcs are at a disadvantage in the sunlight. We will camp here in the forest so as not to give away our position with any fires and move to a point behind the hills first thing in the morning. Everyone get your rest; we will all need it. We'll use our standard guard procedure for the night."
Validar will wait some moments to answer questions or address any problems. Once everyone is satisfied, Validar will spend a few last moments finalizing the attack with Cereld, then move away to tend to his armor and weapon, his thoughts to the coming battle. While quite stern and serious, he also looks like a man who is quite pleased.....

I think that should at least help the slaves to survive. Also we should use the silenced stones on the priests, to prevent them from using their foul powers on us. About the ball in the sky, don't you think a circling golden dragon would create more distraction? "
I will eat some meat and go off and start carving some clubs and crude spears. (And I mean crude!) Let's get some sleep. I will memorize sleep and Phantasmal force. I will check my weapons and my flute, polish my sword and collect some sling stones. Let's kill the Orcs!!

When Zynara kisses Blod on the cheek, he will blush, kick the dirt with a toe and say" Aww Gee, Zynny."
Later when plans are being made, Blod will listen intently to the plan. He will slap Validar on the back and say, "Good plan, Sir Clang!! Me like it!!!"
Here is an idea. We can supply the slaves with the weapons from any orcs that happen to fall. That would save us the time and trouble of making or giving out weapons.
Blod will then retire to sleep.
SUBJ: Stephanie
Quietly listens to the epic plan put forth. When finished, she will ask a question.
'Uhm, I'm in the group that kills anything the moves, right? That's what I thought.'
Steph will move and prepare to retire for the evening, thankful that she doesn't have to remember much...
SUBJ: Dar Thaltus.... FROM: Kazaroth 05/29/90 S#: 806414
while returning from his trek into the woods passes by Cereld and Kam and shakes his head approvingly. He mutters...."he'll help straighten the lad out I'm sure if anyone can." Continuing on Dar reaches the clearing just as Validar begins his outline of the attack plan. Dar sits on his heels nearby and devotes his attention entirely to Val as he completes his explanation of strategies.
After Val finishes Dar stands and clears his throat to speak once more of his own ideas. "Truly a sound plan Validar...although I would ask one small deviation.... when through with the tower defenders I would much prefer to join the ranks of hand to hand combatants for I feel that with my enchanted longsword and the fiery blade that I can summon I would be much more...productive. Also I would like to ply my own prayers and shower the vile orcs with Ehlonna's displeasure. This in the form of a couple of well aimed ENTANGLE spells. A word of caution to those less experienced.....the grasses and shrubs gain no intelligence by this spell and will surely detain friend and enemy alike if the opportunity presents itself. I am well versed in the use and deployment of such a spell will remain mindful of its full effects when placing it. In fact...the closer we can 'herd' the orcs towards the grove...the better for the spell effect!"
Dar resumes his place among his fellow Seekers and listens intently to any adjustments, objections, etc that might be made. Suddenly he steps forward again..."One last thing...I think it would be in our best intentions that Group 'A' move individually towards the tower and regroup there. This just a precaution in the event that one of us is unfortunate enough to be discovered ......or worse. Once at the base of the tower....or in my case 15' away we can begin our assault as a cohesive unit."
Once again Dar takes his place among the ranks and waits for everything to be settled. Once this is accomplished Dar will head off to start anew his meditations and supplications to Ehlonna. He will ask Her to grant him the favor of these spells... ENTANGLE (x2),CLW(x3),FLAME BLADE, OBSCUREMENT, STALK. After finishing his prayers Dar will fall into a light slumber til morning.

Ummm... 'scuse me, 'scuse me. If the more stealthy party is carrying a silenced stone, then THEY won't be able to cast the spells, unless they move 15' away from the rest of the group, and then they will be open for missile fire.

- It looks like this attack has become a fact. I hope we have not sealed Gateway's doom by this decision. -
"If attack we must, this plan appears sound to me. For one studied in the arts of war, you understand the art of magic well, Validar."
"Bernie, I'm sorry we can not accompany each other in the coming skirmish, but I'm comforted knowing that you shall be covering us from the tower."
SUBJ: VALIDAR FROM: Panther13 05/30/90 S#: 830629
To answer questions or clarify things...
"Dar, I find your ideas sound. You are certainly welcome to join the battlers, once the tower is taken. I also approve of your thoughts on individual 'entrances' for your group. As you are more skilled in this area, your attention to this matter is appreciated."
"The group assaulting the priests will certainly use the silence stone to affect their abilities. I may not have been clear, but it was decided as such, not to worry. Also, I did mention that the other group with the silence would have to remember to get rid of their stone before any spells can be cast. As only one of this number is not a spellcaster, that would be the simplest way to deal with the situation."
"My thanks to everyone for their appreciation of this plan, but I must point out that it was not strictly my ideas, but done in close discussion with Cereld and drawing off of many ideas of you all, as well. As for my limited knowledge of magic, I was fortunate to learn some things from my father who also knew the benefits of magical assistance."
SUBJ: Validar (R) FROM: Panther13 05/30/90 S#: 845432
"One last note, should it be necessary: Araduin will be considered acting leader of his group and Dar Thaltus of his, at least until he joins the fray directly. Should any unexpected occurrences happen, I am confident that they can handle such."
SUBJ: Cereld (R) FROM: Lanceson 05/30/90 S#: 521912
"One point I would like to add to Validar's words Dar. Before you rush into combat with the orcs, make sure things are secure everywhere, not just the tower. You will have a good vantage point from above and be able to see more than we on the ground. That grove is still a big mystery and I see it as a possible unexpected problem to our plan. With you in the tower, you might be able to spot anything unexpected and deal with it appropriately before it can cause all of our dooms.
Here Eagle is the Wand of Fear. After this is over I will instruct you as to its use.
Arocken, you are the one that I am going to give the silence stone. Remember to get it out of range of the spellcasters when they wish to cast their spells. One more thing before we bed down, Validar I believe you are still hurt from our last encounter. We will need all of our strength tomorrow, and my spells will be replenished in the morning. I know how you feel about spells being cast on your person, but I ask that you allow Heironeous to heal your wounds.
Steph, when we are going into battle, I would like to cast the second silence spell on you. This way I can cast spells as it becomes necessary by simply staying away from you. And I think it would be safe to assume that you would have no objections to getting as close to the clerics as you can to give them a taste of lightning, am I correct? Tomorrow will be a glorious day. Heironeous will surely be watching us in our battle. Let us rest now, and conserve our strength." Cereld will go to Validar and heal him IF Validar gives him permission to do so. If I remember right, he is the only one still hurt, but if I am wrong, I will heal anyone else that needs it too. Then I will go off and instruct Eagle into how to use the wand, after which I will ask him and Kamreill to join me in prayer to Heironeous. When it comes time to charge into the city and rush the temple, Cereld will raise his axe high in the sky and shout "For Heironeous" and ask him to grant his blessing on this group.

I will thing the best glorious battle song I know( I am sure you know it all): The song of Greenelf, the legendary fighter. I hope that will improve our morale.
BTW, Mad, I am checking those potions. Have I heard of them? (see Player Handbooks :) )
Good Idea, with the Orc weapons. As soon as I hear that I stop carving clubs. "Thanks Blod. I must be really stupid, if YOU think of it and I don't."
The tall bard stares down into the fire. He is thinking about tomorrow. Will all of us survive the next day? Will I survive the next day? I am thinking about the gods. I silently pray to Lydia, goddess of art. I turn to Cereld after a while: " Cereld, I know you are a priest of Heironeous, but should I die tomorrow, just in case, could you arrange that I am buried near a Lydia temple with my flute next to me? Thank you. Well friends, good night it might be our last."
I will lay awake for a while thinking about my life, about tomorrow and about death. Finally I will doze off into a unquiet sleep with several nightmares.

Spectrum's Comments: The plans have been set. The Seekers begin their attack on the ruined city next time. This was a particularly LONG battle. It doesn't conclude until Frontier #48.
