The Gladiator is widely considered to be the best hand-to-hand combatant in the world. He does not use any one particular style of fighting. Rather, he has dabbled in a multitude of disciplines and melded them into his own unique style.

Using mystic rituals and unique herbs, the Gladiator now possesses strength and agility beyond that of any normal human. Likewise, his senses are beyond human range as well. His sense of hearing is so acute as to be able to locate targets if necessary. The Gladiator is keenly aware of what goes on around him.

The Gladiator's past is mostly a mystery-- and that's the way he seems to want it. His real name is unknown to anyone. Only a few facts about his past can be gleaned. He was once in the military, probably the Marines, and served in Vietnam. It is believed that he first learned his love for martial arts during this time.

Accounts of what happened to the man who would be known as the Gladiator are sketchy after the war. Some say he remained in the East and traveled widely, learning many different styles of combat. Others say that he served the United States government in various covert agencies before becoming disillusioned. Then he traveled the world, learning new combat styles and strengthening his body with rituals, rare herbs, and arcane potions.

When the boom in super beings came in the late 70's/early 80's, the Gladiator was there and fought by their side. It was during this time that the Gladiator conceived of the idea of a training program for super-beings. The idea reached the ears of Hyperion, the founder of Sanctuary, and a deal was struck. Thus the Young Champions were born.
