Captain Lightning in a mutant with electrical powers. He can physically change himself into lightning, granting himself the powers of flight, the ability to rapidly move along conductors, and he is able to disrupt electronic machinery. His touch can be fatal in this state. In human form, Captain Lightning can project several different electrical effects, some of which can be fatal. Cap can see just as well at night as he can during the day. By tapping into an electrical power source, such as a electrical outlet, Captain Lightning can increase his powers.

Emmet Ward is a renowned and respected electronics troubleshooter. He offers his skills at top dollar and rarely has a client been disappointed in his work. Emmet has formed Ward Electronics and employs a small staff of similar troubleshooters. Ward has also become independently wealthy from his work. He has invested some of his fortune in other companies, such as Eye Tech Identification Systems. The general public knows that Captain Lightning is an electronics expert and scientist, but not that he is Emmet Ward.

Captain Lightning has been an active hero for almost a decade. Over the years, his adventures in the Dallas area have led Cap to meet several other local heroes and form friendships. One such friendship was with the Sorceress. Together they decided to formally create a hero team to deal with the threats they had been combating as soloists. They asked several other heroes to join their alliance and the Superior Seven was born.

It was decided for Captain Lightning to be the official team leader, since he and the Sorceress were the financial support for the new team and the Sorceress had no desire to have a leadership role. A base was acquired and heavily remodeled to suit the needs of the new team called the Ranch. Pooling the expertise of Captain Lightning, Titan, and Centurian, they were able to create many devices and pieces of equipment for the new team.

Cap has led the Superior Seven through many adventures, such as teaming up with most of the hero teams in the United States to combat the menace of the Crimson Claw. The Superior Seven also has strong ties to Sanctuary and is one of the hero teams used for field training with the Young Champion trainees. A recent collaboration in El Paso unexpectedly led to the death of the Comet. Out of respect, the team changed their name to the Superior Six.

Recently, Cap was drawn into a conflict with Janissary operatives over Eye Tech Identification Systems. Unknown to the general public, Cap and the Sorceress were stockholders and had a vested interest in stopping the Janissary plot to drive Eye Tech to financial ruin.

Cap and the Sorceress have been friends for many years know, but just recently their relationship has taken on romantic overtures. They shared a quiet dinner together at Emmet's apartment. If remains to be seen if this is the start of a serious relationship or not.
