Emmett Ward was making his last second preparations. His apartment had been cleaned and straightened to within an inch of its life. The table had been set with his finest china, candles had been lit, and a bottle of wine was being chilled in an ice bucket. Dinner was just about ready and soft music was playing in the background. Everything was perfect. She would be here shortly.
Emmett couldn't help but be looking forward to this evening. His friend and Superior Six teammate the Sorceress was coming over for a private dinner. The two had first worked together as independent heroes in the days before the formation of the Superior Seven.
In time that association had changed into friendship. The two had shared many interests and had both used their own fortunes to fund the Superior Seven. They had even both invested in various companies; some at Emmett's suggestion like Eye Tech Identification Systems.
But now those feelings had become more serious. It was a subtle thing at first. The way that Tanya would call Emmett 'Captain' and the looks that they shared. Emmett cared deeply for Tanya and now he felt that she was sharing those feelings.
For the first time Emmett realized that he was deeply in love with Tanya. Not that it was a big surprise to anyone, except maybe himself. There was much to admire about the Sorceress. She was breathtakingly beautiful and kind and generous to a fault. Tanya carried herself in an aristocratic manner, but she was never stuck up like some many others would be.
It was no secret that most of her male teammates were very attracted and highly protective of the mage. Centurion had made no secret of his feelings about the Sorceress, but Emmett suspected that he had never said anything to Tanya. Titan looked at Tanya the same way, but in his quiet manner had never spoken up.
Tanya treated all of her teammates the same, but seemed to be more attentive to Captain Lightning. Emmett shrugged it off at first. After all, it was his and Tanya's money that supported the team, so it made sense for their relationship to be different from the others.
The Chamberlain family was fabulously wealthy and had a strong streak of magic in it. Their already sizeable fortune was increased many times over during the oil boom of the '70's. Thanks to the Chamberlain Foundation, their fortunate situation had been channeled back into the community through a variety of charity organizations and events. It was the strong sense of community and caring that had made the Sorceress the toast of Dallas society.
All of Emmett's thoughts faded with the ringing of his doorbell. He rushed to the door, pausing only to make one last check of his appearance in a mirror. Taking a deep breath, Emmett opened the door to find no one there.
"Pleasant evening, Mr. Ward," a voice called out.
"Do come in," Emmett responded. He stepped aside to allow his guest entry. Once confident that Tanya was inside, the apartment door was shut. A moment later, the Sorceress materialized by flicking back the hood of her Shadow Cloak. The mage was in her heroine costume.
"My apologies for the subterfuge, Captain," Tanya explained. "While I may not have a secret identity to hide, you do. It might be awkward for me to be seen entering your apartment."
"I understand perfectly. That's partially why I suggested my place as opposed to something more public."
"Something smells marvelous," Tanya complimented. "What a charming little place you have here. Allow me to change into something more suitable for the occasion."
The Sorceress took a step back and began spell casting. Upon completion, her costume had changed into something more appropriate. Tanya wore a dark green dress with matching pumps. Her hair was elegantly styled and she was adorned with numerous pieces of jewelry.
"There, much better. So how do I look?"
Emmett couldn't help but stare at the vision of loveliness before him. "My dear, you are breathtaking. May I have the privilege of escorting you to the table?"
Tanya offered her hand, which Emmett accepted. "Please do."
The next hour passed quickly. A perfect dinner was enjoyed and Emmett and Tanya were chatting over cappuccino and desert.
"I must admit that I am still concerned about these magic items that we are storing. What's to prevent Black Paladin from trying to acquire them again?"
"Nothing other than your defenses," Tanya simply answered. "I must find a new place to seal away those items."
"What do these items of yours actually do, anyway? You've never really said before."
"I consider that information to be something that you are better left not knowing. It's much safer this way."
"Still, you can at least give me some idea about why they are so dangerous?" Emmett rationalized. "Why they must be locked away?"
Tanya took another sip of her cappuccino and considered for a few moments. "Perhaps I can at least draw a parallel to why these items must remain hidden at all costs."
"Please do."
"It was last November," Tanya explained, "back when Gwen and I were enjoying a skiing holiday in Aspen..."

Tanya Chamberlain couldn't help but feel giddy as she made her way down the snow-covered slope. It was a bright sunny afternoon in Aspen as the world famous heroine slalomed her way back and forth down the mountain face. She was enjoying herself immensely. Tanya always treasured the time spent with her best friend Gwendolyne Kingston, better know as the Enchantress.
As was usual, Tanya was stylishly, but practically dressed. Her ski outfit was dark green in color. What was unusual was that Tanya had used a minor spell to alter her features. Her normally long and luscious red hair had been transformed into short and brown. This was one of those instances when Tanya concealed her true identity to protect one of her close friends. It was one of the more unusual burdens of being a heroine without a secret identity.
Reaching the bottom of the course, Tanya skied to a stop and waited for her friend to catch up with her. "Let us see how well you can negotiate this course, Gwendolyne," Tanya thought to her friend.
The two mages had undergone a ritual years ago that allowed them to share their thoughts when in close proximity to each other. It was not true telepathy, but rather something more akin to conversing on the telephone. Except in this case, no equipment was required. They could only hear those thoughts that the other sent.
"I am more than ready for the challenge," Gwendolyne sent back. The Enchantress had assumed her normal appearance for this little vacation. Her normally silver hair had been restored to its natural blond state. The subtle illusions that differentiated the Enchantress from Gwen were currently inactive.
Snow was sent flying as Gwen made her way down the slope. Gwen was also stylishly dressed, but had chosen a sky blue ski outfit with white accents. Finally, she reached the bottom of the course and slid to a stop near Tanya.
"Nicely done," Tanya clapped. Since the two were so close, she didn't bother to use the link for communication.
"Thank you," Gwen graciously bowed in appreciation. "I'm glad you talked me into this little excursion. It has been ages since I have had this much fun."
"It's good to get away and enjoy the company of close friends. The stresses of our everyday lives can be tiresome at times."
Gwen looked up at her friend, mildly surprised. "Is there some sort of problem in the Superior Seven?", she telepathically asked. Earlier in the year, Tanya as the Sorceress had helped found the Dallas-based hero team. Together with Captain Lightning, Tanya was the financial backbone of the group.
"No, not at all," Tanya responded in kind. "Sometimes you just need to get away and relax. Our profession can be most stressful at times."
"Agreed," Gwen answered. Like Tanya, Gwen was a former student of the Circle, a place where mages could hone their art under the direction of the mysterious Master. The two had been students at the same time, which led to their longstanding friendship.
It was only recently that the Sorceress had joined forces with other heroes, while the Enchantress had been a part of and resigned from the Crusaders years ago. For the most part, it was an experience that left a bad taste in her mouth. The Enchantress had not been part of any organized hero group since that time. Although she still occasionally helped out the current class of the Circle as necessary. (Editor's Note: This story takes place before the Enchantress joined the Avengers.)
Slowly, the two women started to ski back to their lodge. They moved across the snow at a leisurely pace. "Any thoughts on how we shall spend our evening?"
Tanya considered for a moment. "Perhaps hook up with some cute guys and enjoy an evening of dinning and dancing? I'm sure that we'd have no trouble in finding suitable candidates back at the lodge." Tanya was well aware of the looks that she and Gwen had been getting from the other male skiers. It was not surprising, as both women were quite beautiful.
"I was hoping for something a little quieter," Gwen admitted. "Maybe a little dinner, head back to the hotel and curl up and watch a good movie."
"You'll never find your one true love if you don't get out on a few dates," Tanya teased. Tanya was not surprised by her friend's reluctance to seek company for the evening. It was a subject that had come up many times before.
"I believe with every fiber of my being that there is one special man for me in the world. One special man who is destined to be mine and mine alone. When I find my soul mate, I will know it. I do know that he is not here in Aspen at this time."
"Of course, my friend," Tanya chuckled. "A quiet evening it shall be." But in the back of her mind, Tanya continued to calculate how to get Gwen to be more open to meeting other men. While she did not doubt the sincerity in Gwen's assertion that she was saving herself for her one true love, Tanya was unsure if such a man really existed.
The rest of the evening passed as expected. The two friends enjoyed dinner while fending off the advances of numerous men in the restaurant. The resorts were busy this time of year, but with Thanksgiving only a few days away they would only become busier. That was why they had chosen the week before the holiday to have their little vacation.
Tanya decided to remain in the lounge when Gwen was ready to retire to her private suite. Gwen drew a hot and relaxing bath once back at her room. After that, a little television would help pass the rest of the evening. Tanya kept Gwen updated with what was going on down in the lounge as she tried to persuade her friend to join in on the fun. Gwen politely declined the invitation.
Much later that night, Tanya awoke with a start. She spent a few hours enjoying the goings on in the lounge before calling it a night. Tanya was aware that Gwen had retired a little bit earlier due their mystic bond. So instead of stopping off to visit, Tanya simply went to her own suite. She relaxed for a little bit before calling it an evening.
Sleep had come easily to Tanya, but now something had disturbed her slumber. Her senses were telling her that something was very wrong. Much like Gwendolyne, the Master had tutored Tanya to be sensitive to magic and evil. Right now, Tanya was sensing a great unnatural evil in the area.
"Tanya?" Gwen's mental voice was suddenly inside the Sorceress' head.
"I sense it as well, my friend," Tanya sent back. "Intense evil."
"I believe it is demonic in origin," the Enchantress started to explain when suddenly a scream pierced the otherwise quiet night. It was the scream of a woman either experiencing great terror or great pain. Most likely it was both. "I am going to investigate!"
"I will join you momentarily." The Sorceress swept off her covers and rose from her bed. She didn't bother to turn on the lamp on the nightstand. Instead, she cast a familiar spell and her nightgown was replaced by her heroic costume.
The Sorceress wore a dark green bodysuit, minus the arms and legs, with matching full-length boots and gloves. A dark blue cloak swirled from her shoulders and an ornate amulet was worn around her neck. The spell also undid the illusion concealing Tanya's identity. Her long and luscious red hair had been restored. With another gesture, the magical blade Reaver appeared in her hand.
The Sorceress stalked towards the hallway door. As she moved across the dark suite, Tanya lifted the hood of her cloak over her head. As she did so, the Sorceress faded from sight. Mysteriously the hallway door opened by itself and the Sorceress slipped out unseen. Breaking into a sprint, the Sorceress attempted to home in on the evil she was sensing. It was on the other side of the lodge.
Likewise, Gwen had used magic to conjure her Enchantress costume and change her appearance. Gwen's current outfit was mostly red in color. Odd black and red designs covered the tights on her arms and legs. Her hair was restored to its silvery color. The Enchantress cast a Spell of Transport and she was gone upon its completion.
A split second later, the Enchantress appeared before the door to one of the other suites. The evil that Gwen had sensed was much closer to her then it was to Tanya. It was only half a dozen suites away. Several other doors were open when Gwen arrived. Other guests had been disturbed by the sudden, unexpected screams and were curiously looking on.
"Vacate the area!" the Enchantress called out to the other guests. "There is evil afoot!"
Without waiting for a response, the Enchantress threw the door to the suite open and stepped inside. The heroine involuntarily gasped upon seeing the horrific sight that greeted her.
The first thing that the Enchantress noted was that there was blood everywhere. It was pooled on the floor and dripping from the walls and ceiling. The occupant of the suite was sprawled out on the bed covered in her own now spent life's fluid. From the looks of it, razor sharp blades had dissected the unfortunate girl. The stench was nauseating. Bile involuntarily rose up the Enchantress' throat.
Then Gwen noticed that there was someone else in the room. There was nothing particularly remarkable about the man. His looks were average as was his height and weight. His hairline was thinning on the top, but he had long brown hair done up in a ponytail. He wore an unbuttoned flannel shirt, revealing a T-shirt underneath.
What was disturbing was that he had been splattered with blood and that his eyes were now jet black in color, including the cornea. The man also wore small-framed glasses. The Enchantress instantly knew just what she was dealing with. Her earlier assessment of the situation had been correct.
"A demon!"
"Another pretty to play with," the man giggled maniacally as he noticed the Enchantress. "I just love to play with pretties. I just love to open them up and see what comes out."
The strange man gestured towards the Enchantress and ebony blades were fired out of his hand. The shadowy blades impacted on the magical force field that surrounded the Enchantress, driving the heroine back. The field protected her from serious harm, but the attacks still caused her immense pain.
"Vile creature!" the Enchantress cursed as she began spell casting. A bolt of magical energy surged forward, striking the strange man. The force of the impact threw the mad man across the room, bouncing him off the far wall.
Effortlessly, he rose to his feet once more. The attack, while powerful, didn't cause it serious harm. "You are a powerful pretty," the demonic man replied. "You make a better pretty to play with! Ansara enjoy cutting you up!"
Another volley of shadowy blades was sent the Enchantress' way. This time the magic wielding heroine flew off to one side, instead of allowing her magic shield to bear the brunt of the attacks. "You will find me far more powerful than this poor unfortunate who you murdered, demon!"
While hovering in the air, the Enchantress retaliated once more. Another bolt of magical energy slammed hard into the possessed man, driving him through the suite wall and out into the dark and snowy night. Wood and plaster exploded out of the lodge with his passage creating a large hole. Without hesitation, the Enchantress followed him out in the snowy night.
The attack had been with a purpose. First it drove the demon out of the lodge, away from other potential victims. Secondly, it would give the Sorceress the chance to strike the demon down from surprise. When it came to combating demons, tactics that the Enchantress would normally refrain from using were permissible. Combat tactics such as subterfuge and attacking from an ambush didn't begin to bother her. Defeating the creature was all that mattered.
Ansara was waiting for the heroine. The attack, while spectacular, was not sufficient to stop the demon. Shadowy blades slammed into the Enchantress, knocking her out of the sky. The heroine hit the snow with a muted thud. She did not stir.
"Poor pretty. She fall down and go boom." The possessed man stepped closer to the prone Enchantress. She had yet to move. "Now my pretty, show Ansara your blood."
"Get away from her, you demon!"
Ansara gasped in pain as a sword simply passed through his body without causing physical injury. But the mind of his host was on fire. Ansara crumpled to the ground in agony. "Such pain? How can this be? Such pretty pain..."
Behind him, the Sorceress flicked back the hood of the Shadow Cloak nullifying her invisibility. Reaver was in her hand. Thanks to the rapport they shared, Tanya was aware of what was happening with the Enchantress and had used that knowledge to attack the demon from surprise.
"That is just a taste of what lies ahead, demon!"
The Enchantress scrambled to her feet and unleashed another magical blast at the prone demon. The attack she had endured, while painful, was mostly repelled by her magical force field. She was simply bidding time to allow Tanya to join the battle. The blast struck him once more, driving him further away from the magical heroines.
"We shall send you back to your pit," Tanya vowed as she closed on the demon once more, Reaver leading the way.
"More pretties," Ansara giggled. "Hurtful pretties. Ansara play with you later. Then you can show blood." With that, Ansara's physical form began to change. In a matter of seconds, his flesh changed from normal skin into an inky black mist. This mist was rapidly blown away on the swift wind.
"We must follow him," the Enchantress announced.
"Agreed, my friend."
The two heroines took flight. Both of them still sensed the strange demon. It would not elude them, no matter how powerful the snowstorm grew. Together they flew off into the night.
The miles blew past as the magic users pursued the demon Ansara over the Aspen countryside. It was a dark and windy night. Fresh snow fell steadily from the sky and the winds caused it to swirl wildly. The Enchantress flew thanks to the power of her magic. Another spell had provided an Aura of Comfort to protect her from the night's cold.
The Sorceress was borne aloft by her Shadow Cloak. Among the abilities of this powerful artifact was to grant its wearer the power of flight. Likewise, Tanya had cast her own Aura of Comfort spell to withstand the winter chill. Her long hair was whipped wildly about.
The chase led the spell casters away from civilization and further up into the mountains. A lone road, barely visible in the storm, led the way. This part of the Rockies was rough and uneven. It was not ideal for skiing and had never been developed.
Somewhere ahead of them, lost in the swirling snow was the demon they were chasing. Both heroines could sense its presence, but could not see it visually. As they flew along, they began to sense something else.
"Do you feel it, Tanya?" Given the strength of the howling wind, the Enchantress had used the link for communication.
"Yes. I was just about to ask you the same question. There is powerful magic up ahead. But I sense no malevolence from it."
"Agreed. The demon appears to be moving closer to this new source of magic."
The pursuit lasted a few more minutes before ending. The road they had been following suddenly ended. Numerous boulders and rocks blocked the way further up into the mountains. Parked before the debris was a motor home. There was no one in sight and no lights were on. Not totally surprising as this was the middle of the night. Snow covered the vehicle. The mages landed a short distance from the motor home.
"Up there!" Tanya pointed past the end of the road and up the mountainside.
The Enchantress strained to see and could just vaguely make out what appeared to be an opening among the snow covered rocks. "A cave?"
"Yes, I believe so. The source of magic and the demon both seem to be within the cave."
"Let us investigate." The Enchantress brought her magic into play once more. Upon the completion of her newest spell, a hovering glowing sphere came into existence. It lit up the night with its powerful light. At the Enchantress' direction, the sphere shot up towards the cave. The magical heroine took to the air once more chasing after the sphere, the Sorceress following.
The sphere flew a few feet inside the cave and then stopped. The Enchantress landed inside the entrance, the Sorceress moments later. The cave was rough and uneven. The ceiling height ranged from five to eight feet in height, the width averaged about six feet. The dark tunnel led deeper into the mountain.
The Sorceress eyed all the loose rocks near the cave opening. "This cave was just recently unburied," Tanya telepathically noted. "There were many boulders at the foot the hill as well."
"Perhaps the explosion we read about near Denver caused this," Gwen suggested. The girls had read about a tremendous explosion just outside of Denver that had literally blown a mountain apart less than two weeks ago. Traces of a GENOCIDE based had been uncovered as well as many sightings of mutants. However, much of the report was speculation. What had really transpired remained a mystery to the general public. (Editor's Note: See Spectrum #5 for what that was all about.)
"It is a possibility," the Sorceress admitted. "Perhaps this Ansara was imprisoned in this cave and the landslide that uncovered the cave entrance freed him as well."
"A most likely theory."
At the direction of the Enchantress, the sphere of light moved forward once more, lighting the way. The heroines gingerly made their way deeper into the winding and twisting cave. The howl of the wind faded as they moved deeper into the mountain. Soon the only noise was the sound of their footfalls and their breathing.
Suddenly, the Enchantress stopped. "Did you hear that?", she mentally inquired of her friend.
"Yes." The Sorceress had also stopped and now was straining to hear this new, distant noise. "It sounds like--- like a cat purring?"
The Enchantress nodded in agreement before continuing on. In short order the source of the noise was discovered. Sitting in the cave watching as the two women approached was a jet-black tabby. The cat didn't seem the least bit concerned as the spellcasters drew closer. The feline didn't register as magical or malevolent.
Bending down, the Enchantress offered her hand to the cat. "What are you doing here, little one?" The cat gave the hand a curious smell and allowed the Enchantress to rub its head. The cat purred contentedly as it was scratched. "You are a very pretty kitty."
"Maybe the cat's from the mobile home we saw outside," Tanya wondered.
Suddenly, the cat ran off about a dozen feet before turning back. It mewed at the two women in an urgent tone.
"I get the distinct feeling it wants us to follow it," Gwen noted. Both the demon and the strong source of magic lay off in the direction the cat wanted to travel in.
Tanya shrugged her shoulders in response. "Lead on, little friend. We shall follow you."
Seemingly satisfied, the cat spun and continued on down the cave. The heroines followed as best they could. Several intersections were reached and the cat instantly chose which new tunnel to take. The feline would scamper off ahead, wait for the Sorceress and Enchantress to catch up, and then run off again.
As the heroines continued along, the ragged tunnel began to take on a more worked appearance. Rough rock passageways eventually gave way to finished stone. The ceiling became a standard height and the floor evened out. A light could be seen off in the distance.
The Enchantress and the Sorceress slowed their pace as they examined the change in their surroundings. "This must be some sort of structure," Tanya noted. The two had continued to speak only through their telepathic link.
"Buried for who knows how long," the Enchantress added. "The source of magic is directly head. The demon is close by as well. Be on your guard."
Up ahead, the duo could see the black cat waiting for them near an entryway. Behind the tabby a larger chamber could be seen. Lit torches held in wall-mounted sconces provided illumination. As they neared the portal the cat turned and scampered into the chamber.
The Enchantress reached the doorway first. The chamber beyond was rectangular, with the entryway at one of the corners. A group of six pillars surrounded a raised, central circular platform. One of the pillars had collapsed and a large portion of it was lying on the floor outside the raised area.
Silently, the magic-wielding heroines entered the underground chamber. The Enchantress circled off to the left, the Sorceress, Reaver now in hand, to the right. The tabby leaped up on top of the stone column and was seemingly waiting for the heroines to arrive.
As the Sorceress closed on the pillar, she could make out a figure lying behind the obstruction. "Gwen! There's someone behind the pillar!"
The Enchantress nodded her understanding and closed in, her magic at the ready. As the pair drew closer, they could make out a purple clad figure behind the collapsed column. The form wore a deep purple cloak and what appeared to be a patchwork purple outfit could barely be seen underneath.
The purple figure was neither the source of the intense magic or the demonic creature. Lying on the ground before the figure, just beyond its reach was a crystal-headed staff. A flower of some type could be seen within the crystal. Both mages realized that the staff was the source of the intense magic they had been sensing.
As the two heroines watched, the cat leaped down from the column and sat beside the prone figure. The Enchantress circled around the pillar and drew closer. It was clear that the pillar had fallen upon the legs of the purple-clad figure, trapping them.
"Can you understand me?" The Enchantress said aloud as she neared the prone figure.
Painfully, the purple clad being turned to face the heroines. A hooded cloak protected its face. Both heroines inadvertently gasped when they finally saw the face of the trapped person. Instead of a face, purplish flames obscured the being's features! Fiery red flames served as eyes.
"Who's there?" It was a woman's voice that had spoken. There was a weary strain to the woman's voice. "Help me..."
"What manner of being are you?" The Sorceress looked on incredulously. This had to be one of the most unusual beings that she had ever laid eyes on.
"I am the Purple Phlox," the woman stated. "I know who you are. You're the Sorceress and the Enchantress. Free me before the demon returns!"
"Curse me for a novice," Tanya uttered. "I should have recognized the Crystal Staff and the flames that conceal the Purple Phlox."
The Purple Phlox was a name out of the past that was familiar to both women. The Phlox was a legendary figure in magical lore, but one that had not been seen for over a century. Until now. At last report, the Purple Phlox was a man.
"What do you think?" Tanya mentally sent the Enchantress. "Is this really the Purple Phlox?"
"Unknown, but her appearance and the Crystal Staff are compelling evidence. I would suggest assuming that she is the genuine article until we find evidence to the contrary. But do proceed with caution."
"Agreed," the Sorceress responded.
"Permit me to assist you," the Enchantress spoke aloud. Another spell was cast and the pillar crushing the legs of the Purple Phlox gently rose into the air. Aided by the Sorceress, the Phlox was pulled free.
"Thank you," the Purple Phlox gratefully acknowledged. She reached out and grasped her staff. As she did so, a purplish flame engulfed her legs. In seconds, the damage from being crushed by the pillar was healed. "That's much better."
Now that she was free, the Enchantress and Sorceress could see that the Purple Phlox wore a skintight patchwork purple bodysuit that seemed to eerily move and change of its own accord. It snuggly fit her comely curves. She was the same height as the Sorceress and Enchantress. The Phlox bent down and took the black cat into her arms. "And a special thanks to you, Snowball." The cat purred contentedly as it was being cuddled.
"We were not aware that the Purple Phlox was still active," the Enchantress admitted. "We have heard the stories and legends of your past exploits."
"You heard the stories of my predecessors," the purple-clad woman corrected. "I've only been the modern day incarnation for a few months now. The mantle of the Purple Phlox has been handed down from generation to generation. Look it's a long story and we don't have much time. We've got to stop that demon!"
"You are correct, my friend," the Sorceress admitted. "We can converse later on. This demon must be prevented from harming any more innocents."
"Our chance is at hand." The Enchantress could sense that the vile being was drawing closer. "The demon is approaching."
The three women turned to face the lone entryway into the chamber. The Enchantress prepared to unleash more mystic bolts, while the Sorceress cast an enchantment on Reaver to make it even more deadly to demons. The two friends were as prepared as they could be for what lay ahead.
The Purple Phlox let Snowball jump down to the floor and he scampered off to safety. She grasped her staff in both hands; purplish flames engulfed the ancient weapon. "We must capture the demon as gently as possible. He currently possesses the body of my companion."
The Sorceress and Enchantress exchanged puzzled glances with the Purple Phlox. "It's another long story," the Phlox added sheepishly. "I'll explain later."
Suddenly, an explosion of black blades erupted from the entryway. Most simply missed their target. A few were blunted by the Enchantress' magical force field. Tanya's Shadow Cloak whipped about on its own accord, batting away those blades that threatened its mistress. The Crystal Staff simply absorbed the demonic knives that were near to the Purple Phlox.
The Enchantress was first to return fire. Her mystic blast was sent down the entryway but only met with marginal success. Purple flames shot out from the Crystal Staff and burned the possessed man. An unearthly howl filled the caves.
"Those who would do evil are burned by the flames of the Purple Phlox," the Phlox commented. The Phlox dearly hoped that meant the flames would burn the demon and not its innocent host. She couldn't bear to lose Peter now.
"The legends say as much," Tanya added.
"Pretties hurt Ansara! Ansara hurt pretties!"
More shadowy blades were launched by the demon Ansara, but this time they impacted with the tunnel ceiling. The stone was blown apart and a great rumbling filled the air. The entrance to the chamber collapsed in a shower of earth and stone. A wave of thick dust blew towards the women as they tried to remain on their feet.
The Enchantress managed to expand her force field to ward off the cloud of dust and debris, giving the three mages a safe port in the storm raging around them. The dust settled to the floor after a few minutes. By then it was clear that entryway was buried underneath the collapse.
"It'll take hours to dig our way out," the Phlox complained angrily. None of the magicks the Phlox currently had in memory would help clear the blocked passage.
"The demon has fled once more," the Sorceress reported. Already the creature was growing fainter to Tanya's sharp senses. "Perhaps he is off in search of easier prey."
"We must continue the pursuit. Gather close to me," the Enchantress commanded. "A Spell of Transport will whisk us away from these caves."
"Hold on a second," the Purple Phlox interrupted. "Let me grab Snowball and the statuette."
As if he understood what was going on, Snowball advanced on the Sorceress and vigorously rubbed against her legs. The tabby purred contentedly as Tanya reached down to pick up the feline. She absentmindedly scratched underneath Snowball's chin.
"What statuette?", the Enchantress wondered aloud.
The Phlox moved towards the center of the raised area. On the circular platform, previously unnoticed by the Enchantress and Sorceress was a dais. On this stand was a clear crystalline statuette. The Phlox retraced her steps, holding the statuette up for everyone to see.
"This crystal originally imprisoned the demon until it was accidentally unleashed," the Phlox explained. "My companion unknowingly released the demon and was possessed by it. Once free, the demon attacked me, causing the pillar to fall upon me, trapping me while it went off to do whatever evil acts it desired. Fortunately, my personal wards were strong enough to hold the demon at bay. I probably don't want to know what it would have done to me otherwise."
"My guess is that the explosion a few weeks back unburied the cave," the Purple Phlox continued as she took a place near the Enchantress. "I could sense the presence of the demon and we came to investigate and if possible deal with the fiend. Unfortunately, things had not gone as planned."
"That much is evident," the Enchantress commented. "Let us take our leave of this place." The Spell of Transport was cast and all three mages and Snowball disappeared in a flash of crimson light.
A split second later, the spellcasters appeared outside the cave close to the mobile home. The snow was still coming down at a rapid clip. The drifts were knee high to the women. The wind was still howling as loud as ever.
"We must find and defeat this vile beast," the Enchantress called out over the wind. "Already the trail is growing more faint." It was true. The presence of the demon was growing weaker and more distant.
"Are you capable of flight?" Tanya's query was directed towards the Purple Phlox. The purplish flames that covered her face were blowing wildly on the fierce winds.
"Yes, the staff grants me that ability. But there is something that I need to look up first. I may have access to a spell that will re-imprison the demon without harming his host. It will take me time to locate."
The Enchantress considered for a moment. "I will pursue the creature. Tanya, you assist the Purple Phlox as she looks to locate her spell. I will try to keep the demon occupied in the meantime."
The Sorceress shook her head in agreement. "You better get a move on. And keep in touch."
Offering a slight smile, the Enchantress streaked off into the air in pursuit of the demon. She was quickly lost in the snow-filled night sky.
The Purple Phlox and the Sorceress watched her companion depart for a moment. Then the Phlox made her way towards the mobile home. Tanya followed a moment later Snowball still cradled in her hands.
Stepping up into the RV, the Phlox hit the light switch. She immediately made a beeline to the rear chamber, pausing only to brush the snow off of herself. Once inside and safe from the snowstorm, Tanya let Snowball drop to the floor. The cat went towards its water bowl and drank heartily.
Looking around, Tanya could see what she guessed to be a film editing station along with a multitude of equipment. There were several types of cameras, video equipment, and viewing monitors. The logo "Supernatural America" was emblazoned on several pieces of the equipment.
"Anything I can do to help," the Sorceress called out.
"Unfortunately, no," the Phlox responded. She emerged from the back room carrying a large and bulky book. It was a struggle for the woman to bear the tome.
"Allow me to assist you." Tanya stepped forward to assist the struggling woman.
"No!', the Phlox strongly retorted as she maneuvered the book away from the approaching Sorceress. "Forgive my rudeness, but the book bites. Only I can safely touch it."
The Sorceress backed away, giving the Phlox plenty of room. "My apologies. I didn't stop to realize that your spell book might have wards on it. It is a sensible precaution."
"It's okay. I didn't realize it at first either. So much of what I've been doing has been by trial and error. Stuff that you and the Enchantress take for granted scare the stuffing out of me." The Phlox set her burden down on the kitchen table. Wearily, she plopped into one of the chairs and began to thumb through the tome.
"I take it that you do not have a background in things mystical and mysterious?"
"You got that right. I thought it was all nonsense and bunk at first. Boy was I wrong." The Phlox laughed lightly as she turned the pages of the great tome in her search for the desired spell.
Kari Donovan had undergone many changes since becoming the newest Purple Phlox. Her reporters' skepticism caused her to be hesitant to believe anything so outlandish as magic and demons and the like. Even months later the Phlox was still encountering ideas and concepts that she would have once met with scorn. It had been an astounding and bizarre time since the change.
"Perhaps some coffee would help ease the chill," Tanya suggested. "May I?"
"Please do. That sounds wonderful."
Tanya nosed through the small kitchen, opening cabinets before finding the coffee. In short order, coffee was beginning to brew. While she waited, Tanya took a seat across from the Purple Phlox. Snowball curled up in her lap and was content to be scratched. "Have you ever heard of the Master?"
"I can't say that I have," the Phlox answered. "Snowball seems to like you."
"He led us directly to you," the Sorceress commented. "You have a very smart cat here. A friendly one too."
"I've found Snowball to be a very good judge of character. My friend jokes of him being my 'evil, fur-bearin' familiar'."
"That thought did cross my mind," Tanya admitted. "Mages of old sometimes used mundane animals to provide a small boost to their abilities. Anyway, the Master helped instruct the Enchantress and myself in the arcane arts. He runs a loose school for those with magical or magically related talent. Perhaps he could assist you in becoming familiar with your abilities."
"It is something to consider," the Phlox admitted. "However, I am not exactly without guidance of my own." Just what this guidance was, the fiery-faced woman would not comment further. The Purple Phlox seemed to wish to keep her secrets her own. The Sorceress did not blame her in the least and did not pry.
In short order, the coffee was ready and Tanya poured two cups. She kept conversation to a minimum as the Phlox worked to find the desired spell. The mental rapport she shared with Gwen was active as the Sorceress kept track of her friends' progress. She petted Snowball to pass the time.
"This is it!" The Phlox excitedly pointed to a particular page in the massive book. It was written in a language that was not readily familiar to Tanya. "Give me a few minutes to memorize this and we'll be ready to go. Will you be able to locate the Enchantress?"
"Yes, I have been in constant contact with her while you searched for the spell." Sensing a better explanation was required Tanya added, "I share a mental rapport with the Enchantress. It permits us non-verbal communication over short distances. She is currently closing in on the demon."
"Good. According to the book this spell will remove the demon from Peter and re-imprison it in the statuette. But there's a catch. I need to draw a mystic circle first and then lure the demon inside it."
Tanya considered for a moment. Clearly, the type of magic the Phlox wielded was different and more limited than the kind the Sorceress and the Enchantress employed. Of course, neither woman could invoke the type of magic that would re-imprison the demon either. So in that sense, it was more powerful as well.
"I'll inform the Enchantress and then we'll see what we can do."
Miles away, the Enchantress was closing in on the fleeing demon. She had used her magic to boost her natural flight to even more impressive speeds. Another spell helped her see through the dark and snowy night as if it was the daytime. The Enchantress could sense that she was gaining on the demon. The trail was growing stronger and stronger now.
The pursuit had lead down from the mountains and into a valley. Small outlying houses and buildings could be spotted. Several farms with corrals and barns were seen as well. It was a small rural community nestled high in the Rocky Mountains.
As she flew along, Tanya's thoughts came into Gwen's mind. "Have you located the demon yet?"
"Not yet, but I am getting close. Has the Phlox located the spell she spoke of?"
"Yes, that's mainly what I was contacting you about. She's memorizing the spell as we speak. However, she will have to draw a mystic circle and then lure the demon inside for it to be effective."
"She will need someplace indoors to draw her circle," Gwen mused. "Attempting such a feat outdoors is currently out of the question."
"In that we are in agreement. Are there any structures near your current location?"
"Yes," the Enchantress reported. "I am currently approaching a small community. There was a large barn near where I entered the valley. It should be the first structure that you come across. Have the Phlox draw her circle there. I will attempt to lure the demon into the trap."
"Understood. I will keep you advised of our progress. Do be careful."
"Of that you can be certain."
By now, the Enchantress could see the flying demon ahead of her. It was unaware of her rapid approach. The fiend was nonchalantly flying towards an unsuspecting house. It was impossible to tell if anyone was home at this late hour or not. Regardless, the Enchantress was going to have to intervene.
The Enchantress closed the distance between her and the demon and fired a magical blast. It caught the demon in the back and totally unaware. The force of the blast propelled him further ahead. He violently bounced off the side of the house before landing in the fresh snow.
"You will not escape me, demon!" the Enchantress vowed. "Your days of evil are finished!"
"Pretty comes after Ansara," the demon sneered. "Pretty must want to show Ansara her blood. Ansara will not disappoint pretty."
Once more the fiend fired off his shadowy blades and a volley of them slammed into the Enchantress. Her forcefield saved her from being cut open, but the pain momentarily overwhelmed her mind. The magical heroine fell from the sky, landing roughly in the snow.
Fighting back the throbbing in her head, the Enchantress fired another blast. At this close range it was almost impossible to miss. The demon was blasted back once more. This time it was slow to recover. It was possible to wear the beast down.
Using this pause to her advantage, the Enchantress conjured a red sphere of energy around the fiend. Ansara regained control of his senses to find himself imprisoned! Vainly, he pounded on the side of the energy sphere.
"You cannot hold Ansara! Ansara locked away for too long! He will be free!" More shadowy blades were launched and the sphere was destroyed. But just as fast as he destroyed the sphere, the Enchantress created another. This second one was rapidly destroyed, forcing the creation of a third.
"Do hurry," the Enchantress mentally urged the Sorceress. "I am unsure how long I can keep delaying the demon!"
"Understood," the Sorceress sent back. "I will keep you advised."
The Sorceress flew through the snowy night, the enigmatic Purple Phlox beside her. The Phlox held her staff out before her, grasping it with both hands. From what the woman said, it was the source of her being able to fly, much like the Shadow Cloak granting Tanya the ability to flight. The two were making good time. They were rapidly approaching the location of the demon and the Enchantress.
"We must make haste," the Sorceress told the Purple Phlox. "The Enchantress is holding the demon at bay, but cannot do so forever."
"I understand. Did she suggest where I could draw my mystic circle?"
"It is my understanding that we are approaching a valley. The Enchantress spoke of a barn being the first structure that we should encounter. It was her suggestion to draw your circle within the barn."
"Sounds good," the Phlox answered back.
Tanya found it unusual how the flames concealed the Phloxes features, but didn't seem to cause her any pain or ignite her clothing. It was a mysterious and very creepy effect. Undoubtedly, it would strike fear into the heart of the Phloxes foes.
The pair flew along in silence. In short order, the valley the Enchantress spoke of came into view. In spite of the snow and swirling winds, the barn in question was rapidly spotted.
"There!" The Sorceress pointed and shouted over the wind. She had also used her magic to grant her better sight in the darkness. Everything appeared to her as if it was an overcast day.
"I see it."
The pair landed before the structure. No noise could be heard from inside over the howling winds. There was no light from inside the old barn. Fighting the snow and breeze, the Sorceress made her way to the entryway. Her hair and Shadow Cloak where thrown about wildly on the winds. Likewise, the deep purple cloak worn by the Purple Phlox was whipped about.
Thankfully, the interior of the barn was deserted. Apparently, only equipment was stored here. The Sorceress managed to find a light switch and the overhead lights flickered to life. The floor of the barn was dirt with sawdust and straw mixed in.
"Will this suffice for your purposes?" the Sorceress inquired.
"It'll have to do." The Phlox selected a large area and pulled out a small bag of powder while the Sorceress gave the enigmatic mage room to work. "This powder must be arranged in a specific pattern and then ignited once the demon is within its boundaries. That will also be the most difficult of our tasks. We will also need the statuette close by so that the demon can be re-imprisoned within it. However, it cannot be physically touched once the beast is inside. Otherwise our efforts will have been in vain."
"Do not worry, my friend," the Sorceress responded. "I think I know just how we can pull this off. Work quickly or the Enchantress will be overwhelmed."
Thanks to the mental reports send by the Sorceress, the Enchantress was able to keep abreast of the Phlox's progress. The demon continued to shred the imprisoning energy spheres as fast as Gwen could conjure them. The magic-wielding heroine was not making any significant progress, but that was not her goal. She was simply buying time for the Purple Phlox to complete her task.
Finally, and thankfully, the all ready sign was given. The Enchantress was able to make her move.
"You waste your energy, pretty," Ansara sneered through Peter's mouth. "Ansara will never tire. You will grow weak and then Ansara will cut away your flesh!"
The resolve that had shown on the face of the Enchantress had given way to concern and uncertainly. "It is impossible!" the Enchantress cried out loud. "My magic isn't strong enough to stop this demon!"
"Nothing can stop Ansara!" To prove his point, the demon shattered yet another sphere. "Nothing!"
"I must get away," the magical heroine muttered as she turned and flew off into the night. "Before this demon kills me!" Fear now fully etched on her face, the Enchantress glanced back in horror. Ansara was following her! Perfect!
"No, my pretty. You cannot get away from Ansara. You've caused Ansara much annoyance. Now Ansara will take his revenge!" The Enchantress surged forward, picking up speed. Ansara easily kept pace and was actually gaining.
Suddenly, the Enchantress dove down towards the ground and began to weave her way around trees and structures in a vain attempt to lose her pursuer. It didn't work as Ansara continued to draw even closer. No matter what she did, the Enchantress could not escape the closing fiend.
Nearly exhausted, the Enchantress landed before a large barn. She opened the man-door and flew inside. Ansara followed without missing a beat. The demon flew inside the open door and found his prey huddled in fear against the back wall.
"Stay away from me!" the Enchantress cried out. The terror she was feeling grew in intensity as the demon floated closer. There was no back door to the barn. Gwen was trapped!
"Now why would I do that, pretty? Ansara wants to play!" The fiend cackled and he closed in on the trapped heroine. The demon was going to savior every moment of what was to come.
Some ten feet behind the demon, the Sorceress came into existence from the Shadow Plane in a dark blue swirl. "Playtime is over, demon!" Grasping the edges of her cloak, Tanya activated the portal to that dark and mysterious plane.
The Purple Phlox stepped out of the cloak a moment later. She quickly reached out with her Crystal Headed Staff and ignited the powder she had laid out earlier. Immediately purplish flames leaped up all around Ansara in the form of the pattern that had been drawn.
"Now get out of Peter's body, you bastard!" the Phlox cursed.
"NOOOO!!" Ansara screamed as he felt the familiar sensations of the imprisoning spell. The purplish flames burned him into the depths of his hellish soul. Already his spirit was being wrenched out of Peter's body.
"Ansara will not be locked away again!" But in spite of the demon's claim, the magic of the circle was doing its job. Peter was unharmed by the flames of the Purple Phlox, but they burned the demon. There was nothing the fiend could do to stop his being imprisoned once more.
The Sorceress held out the clear crystal statuette before her and quickly set it down on the ground. The magic of the mystic circle funneled the still screaming spirit of Ansara back into the statuette. The figurine started to turn jet black as the soul of the fiend was once more bound inside it.
Then all at once it was over. The purplish flames were gone and Peter Ramsey collapsed to the ground. He was now free of his possession and Ansara was incarcerated once more. The Purple Phlox was at his side instantly.
"Peter?"
Weakly, Peter Ramsey's eyes flickered open. They were no longer black. A meek smile came to his face. "That you Phloxy lady?"
"He's back to normal, all right," the Purple Phlox said with a laugh. She gave Peter a hug. "Now listen, numbskull, when I tell you to not touch something, you don't touch it. Understood?"
"Yes, ma'am." Peter looked around in confusion. "How did we get here? Is that really the Enchantress and the Sorceress? This is so cool! Where's my camera?"
"Yep, definitely back to normal."
The Sorceress regarded the statuette that was Ansara's prison once more while Peter and the Purple Phlox were reunited. She could almost feel the evil and hatred coming from the small object seated on the floor before her. Tanya didn't dare touch the object, err Ansara attempt to possess her.
The Enchantress came walking up, immensely pleased with herself. "What did you think of my performance? Poor Ansara actually thought I was fleeing for my life. Never did he realize that I was merely leading him into this trap."
"It was an award winning act of legerdemain, my friend," Tanya smiled. "Now that this evil has been contained once more, all that remains is to see that it remains that way for all eternity."
"I think I can see to that," the Purple Phlox stated as she joined in on the conversation. "Permit me to memorize a few spells and the menace of Ansara shall be dealt with permanently."
The Enchantress and Sorceress exchanged glances and shrugs. "What did you have in mind?", the Sorceress inquired. Tanya had encountered items similar to this statuette that also held unspeakable evil. She, with the assistance of Captain Lightning, had constructed a special vault in the Superior Seven base to hold these vile artifacts.
"Gals," the Phlox explained, "you'll just have to trust me."
An hour later, the Enchantress, Purple Phlox, and the Sorceress were back inside the caves where the statuette had been stored. The Circle-trained mages simply watched as the Phlox did her work. More of her strange powder, apparently a different variety this time, had been poured out around the other wall of the cavern.
The statuette itself had been placed on the raised circular platform. The Enchantress had used her magic to move the artifact about, denying Ansara the human touch he needed to escape once more. Seemingly satisfied with her efforts, the Purple Phlox joined the other women.
"We are ready to begin," the Phlox announced. She pointed her Crystal Headed Staff at the statuette and a jet of purplish flame came out. The flames enveloped the statuette and it disappeared underneath the blaze.
As the Sorceress and the Enchantress looked on, the purplish flames began to burn their way through the stone platform. The fiery globe gained in momentum and quickly dropped away, burrowing itself deeper into the earth.
"Ansara will be several miles deep before my spell gives out," the Purple Phlox explained. "The statuette is unbreakable, so by depriving Ansara of any human contact, he will never be able to escape again."
"A most horrific fate," the Sorceress stated.
"Necessary when one deals with demons," the Enchantress corrected. "What purpose does the powder you poured along the chamber walls serve?"
"With Ansara gone, there is no reason for this place to remain standing. I plan to bring the walls down, further entombing Ansara."
"A sensible precaution," Tanya nodded in agreement.
The Phlox pointed her staff at the powder and fired off another jet of purplish flames. The powder was quickly ignited and began to burn. "I would strongly suggest that we vacate the premises," the Phlox commented.
The Enchantress was ready and her Spell of Transport whisked all three women away. A few moments later, the chamber walls imploded, bringing the ceiling and the tons of rock it supported down. The ground shook for several moments and then was still once more. Humanity was again protected from Ansara's evil.
A short time later, the Enchantress and Sorceress were standing outside the RV. Snowball came out to visit while the Phlox went to check on her friend. The storm had died down and it stopped snowing. The first light of a new day could be seen over the mountaintops.
"We've been up almost all night," the Sorceress noted. "Not exactly how I envisioned spending my holiday."
"It is fortunate that we were in the area. Otherwise Ansara could have harmed a great many people."
"Indeed. What are your plans for today?"
The Enchantress considered for a moment. "I think a nice, warm breakfast is in order. Afterwards a few hours of sleep would be desirable. How about we travel into Denver and do some shopping?"
"Capitol suggestion," Tanya agreed with a grin.
The door to the RV opened and the Purple Phlox stepped out. She still maintained her flaming mask over her normal features.
"How is your friend doing?" the Enchantress inquired.
"He is resting comfortably," the Phlox reported. "Hopefully he'll be able to put this ordeal behind him."
"I guess this is where we part company," the Sorceress said. She offered her hand to the Purple Phlox. "It was a pleasure meeting you, Purple Phlox."
"Likewise," the Phlox responded by shaking the Sorceress' hand. "I just hope next time it will be under less trying circumstances."
"In that we are in agreement." The Enchantress shook the Phlox's hand after Tanya. "Should you ever need our assistance, please do not hesitate to ask. Have a good day."
"Thank you for everything you've done for Peter and I. I am most grateful."
The Enchantress rose into the air, followed by the Sorceress. Both heroines waved as they started to fly away. The Purple Phlox waved back until the Sorceress and Enchantress were out of sight. Once that happened, Kari willed away her flaming mask and sighed in relief. This particular mission had nearly blown up in her face but fortunately everything had worked out in the end.
Reaching down, Kari picked up Snowball and held him close. The tabby purred contentedly. "Now let me guess, you're hungry. To tell you the truth, Snowball, so am I." Kari turned and stepped back inside the mobile home.
Epilogue:
Upon finishing up her story, Tanya took a sip of her cappuccino and sat back. Emmett was running through her tale in his mind. She could tell that he was somewhat skeptical of the whole thing. Still, the Superior Six had encountered demons before, so it was not that far fetched.
"So what you are suggesting is that the items you've secured in the vault may actually be imprisoning evil critters in addition to having diabolical affects?"
"That is the truth of the matter," Tanya admitted. "Some of the items we have locked away make Ansara seem mild by comparison. Now do you understand why it is imperative that these artifacts be sealed away from those foolish enough to use them?"
Skepticism was still on his face, but Emmett couldn't help but nod in agreement. "I guess I understand now. Well understand better at any rate. I'll see what I can come up with to improve the security of your collection."
"I would appreciate it immensely," Tanya stated gratefully.
"I aim to please," Emmett smiled back. "What would you like to do next?"
Leaning forward once more, Tanya considered the request. "How about stopping off at a club? I feel like dancing. I can use my magic to change my appearance so as to not be noticed."
"That won't be necessary, my dear." Emmett pushed several buttons on his remote and the tempo of the music grew several levels louder. More controls caused the lighting in the area adjacent to the dinning table to soften. In short order a private dance floor had been created.
"I'm impressed, Mr. Ward."
Emmett rose from his chair and offered his hand to Tanya. "You're most welcome, Ms. Chamberlain. There is no need for magic or illusions. I happen to like you just the way you are."
Walking hand and hand, the couple moved out to the lighted area. Emmett drew Tanya into his arms and they began to dance slowly. He marveled at the feeling of her body so close to his. The couple swayed to the music and was quickly lost in the moment. Both couldn't help but wonder just how this romantic evening was going to turn out.
