Lost Heroes #34 - 36

"The New Blood"

Spectrum's Comments: The majority of the Lost Heroes has entered the Botany Sphere and have encountered the bizarre Black Forest. Meanwhile, Number 6 is being cured of his medical condition. Inside his mind, the drama of his cure is being played out. And strange blurbs of people talking are appearing for no apparent reason.

Prolog: Elsewhere....

"So far, so good."

"Now what?"

"We need some new blood."

"How are you going to explain this one?"

"I'm not."

"They're going to figure it out, you know. Every one of them has simply appeared out of nowhere. And the last thing they remember was their impending death."

"Even if they do, there isn't much they can do about it."

Lost Heroes #34 - "The New Blood"

The last thing Number Six remembered was the needle going to his arm. After a moment of pain, he passed out. When he awoke, he was under water. Wearily, lungs bursting, he struggled to the surface. With his last ounce of strength he broke surface....

The next thing he knew, he was in a bed in the Medical Sphere. Beth was close by.

Beth - "It was touch and go for awhile, but I believe that the operation was a success! You're cured! However, you're in poor physical condition. The cure has repaired the damage, but you have the stamina of a new born."

Up in the hanger deck, there is a small display of energy and three men appear out of nowhere.

One is a humanoid, but is obviously alien by his silvery skin. Another is a powerfully built man with a sword. The last is a young man carrying a musical device of some type. They are all stunned to find themselves here. They are equally surprised to see each other.

Looking around, they find themselves in a gigantic room, some 200' feet wide and circular. The ceiling is, at it's highest, 50' over there heads. There are aircraft of some type close by. They are futuristic/primitive, depending on your point of view.

Then a voice is heard:

"Intruder alert! Intruder alert! Unidentified personal in the Hanger Bay!"

GM Notes:

Short post this week. Rem and Tarantula are in the same situation as in the last post.

Say hello to the new PC's!

We are reaching the point where you all are going have to talk with each other and decide in what direction you are going to take this campaign. Are you going to go out and explore and use Alpha Base as a headquarters? Will you try to locate other people and installations? What about Dr. Destroyer to the north and the Gothronian Lizard still wandering about? And what about the aliens in Earth orbit? And who killed that woman? Now is the time to decide what path you are going to take.

I realize that you newcomers probably have no idea what all of the above means, but don't be afraid to ask me and the other regulars!

Spectrum's Comments: One of the virtues of this game was that it was easy to introduce new people. They just appeared out of thin air! More clues to the true nature of the game in the prologue.

SUBJ: What's going on.....? (R) FROM: IRONARCHER 12/02/89 S#: 508983

The silver skinned man looks around the room taking only an instant to think over the situation. The man is roughly 6'4 in height and is in top physical condition. He wears black armor that seems to be a few years more advanced then technology that you have seen. The man grips his weapon (which looks to you like a futuristic crossbow) and turns to the others.

"Are you the ones responsible for destroying my ship? Are you the ones that must pay for my troubles! Where am I? This can't be Earth, I have studied long and hard, but this can't be the place" shouts the alien!

The alien returns to his speech after a brief pause and adds "Are you friend or foe, as Earth people would say?"

While waiting for a response the alien shifts its form to a form that looks to you like a were-cat!

Spectrum's Comments: I can't say I remember much about this guy. Other than he was the first of the three new arrivals to go.

SUBJ: Number 6 FROM: Deslock 12/02/89 S#: 35459

"Oh my head... how long was I out? I had the strangest dream ... What's been happening while I was out? There's still a lot to do around this place to get it operational."

I'll try to sit up and get out of bed (Doctors always make lousy patients).

Mail From: AREION Date: Sunday 3-Dec-89 17:36 EST

While in the green house, BT will grab a handful of the foliage, if he can, & slip it into his sweatpants pocket. As he's not sure what he's going to do with it, he'll keep this action a secret for now.

As a direction for BT to take, I'd consider taking the Spider-women back to rebuild their shrine, and society, and set up some kind of counsel or at least establish communications between surrounding villages (assuming there are any) as the first building blocks to reestablishing society.

It would give BT or Warlord Tarantula a lot of room to go power mad. Although it won't be long before surrounding villages start reporting villagers disappearing in the night under mysterious circumstances. If this is an acceptable course, BT will unveil his new armor, when he sets out into the world.

Spectrum's Comments: Portions of BT secret plans for the game.

SUBJ: BLACK TARANTULA FROM: AREION 12/03/89 S#: 501266

Swallowed by the darkness, TARANTULA's grip around REM's waist tightens defensively.

"What is this?!?...This isn't natural It seems almost sentient... malicious!"

Depending on whether or not his danger sense is going of or not, BT will take one of two courses of action.

If Danger Sense gives off a warning: BT will slowly back out the way he came, being sure to keep a secure hold on Rem.

If there appears to be no danger: BT will press slowly forward, his free arm groping before him, feeling for his way.

If, at any point, we're physically attacked, I'll cradle REM in my arms and perform multiple acrobatics flips, straight backwards until we're out of the green house (or I knock us silly slamming into a wall, whichever comes first. :>)

If I should hear the intruder alert from the hanger bay, I'll try to get REM out of there to go investigate.

SUBJ: LORD LUNATIC - Victor Feury FROM: NightStlkr 12/03/89 S#: 518285

"BY THE FOUR WINDS...WHERE AM I?"

Lord Lunatic is a husky young man of around 21,standing 6 1/2 feet in height. In his hand is a golden hilted sword with a mystical flaming blade.

The warrior is garbed in Mystic Robe Armor: his top half of armor is gray chain mail, overlapped by a long red robe that covers his chest, down to his mid-thigh. The armor's bottom half is obviously made of tan leather. He is also wearing a black studded belt w/sheathe, brown/tan trimmed boots and gauntlets, golden shoulder plates, and an intricately detailed amulet made of gold. On his head is a red helmet with gold trim that comes down around his eyes and down the sides of his mouth; throwing a shadow over his face. What the helmet doesn't obscure is his violent, bright blue eyes and his long dirty-blonde hair that flows down onto his chest.

The swordsman stands ready before the others in the room; awaiting conflict: "Who be thee, friends or foes...?"

When he realizes that they aren't out to do him harm; that they are in the same situation as himself, he lowers his mighty Phoenix Sword.

"Forgive me for my paranoia... my name is Victor Feury, though m'thinks thou may recognize me by the Title given me by my peers: LORD LUNATIC... I am a Mystic Knight from the Barren Lands where I uphold the Eight Virtues of Honesty, Compassion, Valor, Justice, Spirituality, Honor, Sacrifice, and Humility. I bid thee, GREETINGS..."

Lord Lunatic converses with the others in the room, hoping to find some clue as to how he arrived there.

Spectrum's Comments: Yes, this is Nightstalker's player with a different character.

SUBJ: REM FROM: REM9 12/03/89 S#:491418

"Tarantula, I can no longer sense the others in this mess. Maybe I can get this thing to give them back, but if this doesn't work your gonna have to get us out of here cause this thing seems to be resistant to my probes. OK forest time to meet FIRESTAR (sorry Schar)" REM will try to connect with the forest's mind and cause it to see flaming blasts come from her hands and emit into a sphere surrounding the two of them.

SUBJ: Yet another addition... FROM: Shadeblade 12/04/89 S#: 466101

The third man, as he materializes in the hangar, looks around as if ready to be attacked. When paired with the similar defensive actions of the other two, it creates a VERY tense moment or two. Finally, he listens to what they say. He picks up a locked metal case and puts his longsword (kind of unimpressive when compared to Lord Lunatic's...) back in its scabbard.

"You guys don't know what's going on, then? I can't be much help, either. This kind of stuff seems to happen to me every now and then. From experience, I can tell you that whenever it DOES happen, I end up in DEEP trouble. From the sounds of the alarms, I guess that there is a bit of trouble in store... By the way, my name is Doug. Pleased to meet you all."

Doug manages to take the events in stride as someone who is accustomed to strangeness. His physical appearance is not too impressive. He looks to be in his early twenties. Physique-wise, he looks stronger than average, but not as built as Lord Lunatic. His head is crowned with blond hair, well kept and cut about an inch over the collar in back. His face is handsome, but seems to carry the dark shadow of a man who has seen much and lost even more.

Spectrum's Comments: Meet Shadeblade. Doug was one of two Champions characters he ran. The other was Tigereye in Young Champions. Doug was another player around all the way until the end. After his stint in Lost Heroes, Doug did some solo stuff before joining the Crusaders. His character has a unique 'Troubleseeking' talent. Basically, every so often (Gm's whim basically) he is teleported somewhere where there is trouble. On this particular occasion, Doug was sent forward in time. Doug's characters have a great deal of personal doubts and internal conflicts. A very good role player. Doug was also one of those very rare characters who did not have an SI.

SUBJ: Beth

'You lie down this instant! You just went through major reconstructive surgery! If you think you are going anywhere, you are sadly mistaken! Let the others take care of the alarm.'

(I too know how doctors are! But in your present condition Beth can out arm-wrestle you!)

Hi everybody, and Rem, I'm sure that Firestar, wherever she may be, would be pleased ;)

SUBJ: Number 6 FROM: Deslock 12/04/89 S#: 26076

I struggle for a moment, but to no avail, the mere effort exhausting my meager reserves.

"All right, all right. It would appear I'm in no position to argue. Still, I'm out of danger now, why don't you go and see what that intruder warning is about. This place is drastically under staffed, who knows what the problem might be?"

- It seems I've traded one prison for another. This is not a situation that I will tolerate. I guess now would be a good time to finalize those designs I've been working on, I have nothing but time on my hands. -

GM Notes:

Rem concentrates and creates the image she desires. 'Firestar' blasts into the darkness... And the darkness flees! She and Tarantula can feel the blasts shaking the forest. Tarantula's danger sense, already humming, goes into overdrive. He holds Rem tightly and tumbles out of the forest.

Once back out in the corridor, the door slams shut of it's own accord. Then they can hear the alarms going off.

Beth moves over the control council in the Sick Bay. She punches up a few keys, and the image of the hanger deck appears.

Beth - "This is strange, Number 6... There are three strangers in the hanger bay!"

And in the hanger bay, the three newcomers have introduced themselves. They are prepared for something to happen. The alarm keeps on ringing, but no one has yet to appear.

At the far side of the hanger, you can see an elevated control room. One of it's glass windows has been shattered. Doors underneath the control room at floor level suggest an entrance.

SUBJ: Slade Ja' Jabal' (R) FROM: IRONARCHER 12/05/89 S#: 499030

The silver skinned alien introduces his self to the others in the hanger deck and tells them his name (Slade Ja' Jabal') "I suggest we head for the doors. What do you two think?"

Slade stays in his animal form, his armor has appeared to change with him, and his laser crossbow is hanging around his neck ready for fire, in addition to this, he has a knife that is sheathed on his leg.

SUBJ: Doug Ballant(R) FROM: Shadeblade 12/06/89 S#: 57411

"I think that those doors are a better bet than sitting around like invalids. I hope you don't mind me calling you just Slade. I might trip over the rest. I've never appeared anywhere where there isn't trouble yet, so we might want to stay on our toes. This whole place gives me the creeps. It's as silent as a tomb, as far as people go. Not too comforting..."

SUBJ: Slade FROM: IRONARCHER 12/06/89 S#: 515571

"Doug, How many places have you appeared?"

"You two appear to be humans and may be afraid of me because of my shape shifting abilities! Do not be alarmed this power is inborn, all of my people possess it!" "Do either of you possess powers? Where do you come from? I am from a distant galaxy and a planet called Cromium."

Slade walks towards the doors, and shows no signs of fear from Doug's response about danger since all Cromians have a fear of nothing and haven't shown any reason to be afraid since there power's are so strong.

SUBJ: Number 6 (R) FROM: Deslock 12/06/89 S#: 517709

"More unannounced guests? Since no one else is responding, it might be best if you went and greeted them. From their general demeanor, I do not think they are hostile. More likely than not, they simply 'appeared' here, as seems to be becoming a more and more frequent event. Leave the console active, that way I'll be able to verbally activate the internal defense systems if they become violent."

- What is going on here? I don't care what the year is; the events unfolding here do not jibe. There's too much to do, what with 6 more Popsicles to examine, the Sh're/Solitaire problem, maintenance to perform,... I cannot just lie here! -

Waiting for Beth to leave the room, I'll again attempt to sit up, leaning back against the headboard for support. (I have no intention of killing myself falling out of bed after coming this far.)

- Ooof. There's a lot to work on internally, too. -

"Computer, analysis of intruders please. Prepare but do not engage security systems at this time. Also, I'd like a full medical analysis of the Sh're/Solitaire symbiote with regard to approaches for successful fission of these entities, including treatments to might restore the sanity of the Solitaire persona. While you're working on those, please bring up the drafts of the designs I've been working on. As long as I'm stuck in this bed, I might as well finish them up."

SUBJ: LORD LUNATIC - Victor Feury FROM: NightStlkr 12/06/89 S#: 517919

"AYE, Doug... m'thinks we should examine our current predicament a little further, and the room yonder appears to be our best initiative; though the Code of Valor bids me not to cower at ANY form that evil takes the visage of...nor does it allow me to cringe so easily at one's physical appearance, Slade. I have no problems with the nature of thy unusual presence. I would INDEED be honored to face our ill bodings with you...and YOU as well, Doug. Thy presence here does remind me of battles past, when I fought alongside my fellow Mystic Knights. Now, I find it difficult to find allies, for as my former-comrades at arms did speak of my insane battle tactics, 'T'would be suicidal to fight along side a Mystic Knight who is so deeply scarred, emotionally that he is yet to be proven more INSANE than the enemy...' I DO hope this does not hinder thy judgment of being along side of me when battle does rage..."

"In response to your question of my abilities, Slade...the TRUE POWER of a Mystic Knight comes within; though I myself possess SOME physical power, my TRUE POWER is directed through my mystical armaments; for only one with the inner knowledge can use mystic weapons to any significant effects... BUT...only a True Mystic Knight may wield the Power of the Mighty Phoenix Sword...thus it has been entrusted unto me by my dear friend Highlord Enik; Me being one of the most VIRTUOUS of Mystic Knights in the entire Order..."

Lost Heroes #35 - "The Next Victim"

Beth - "Yes, perhaps you're right, Number 6. Just let me get a few things and I'll be on my way."

In an adjoining room, Beth straps on her force field belt and holsters her laser pistol.

Beth - "After what happened at the spider temple, I'm taking nothing for granted."

Number 6 - "I'll monitor you from here."

After Beth leaves, Number 6 begins his work. After ten minutes, the computer has come up with some answers.

"Analysis on three intruders is complete. The first is an alien being. Internal body configuration matches no known bio-file. The second man is human, although his physique exceeds known human parameters. His sword is a tremendous source of energy. The last subject is human. In excellent physical condition, but within human parameters. Clothing suggests the late 20th century as point of origin. The device he carries is a combination computer/musical instrument."

"Analysis of subject Solitaire/Sh're. Insufficient data at this time. Both subjects have unknown bio-files. The possibility of curing subject Solitaire's insanity is unknown at moment. Subject existed for 690 years as a formless manifestation. Subject Solitaire must possess others to have physical form. Based on limited data on subject Sh're suggest that subject Sh're was perfect host."

Tactical update on conflict in Earth orbit. Alien force has destroyed the polar space platform. Fleet is gathering at that point."

Back up in the hanger deck, Slade, Doug and Lord Lunatic approach the doors. They slide open to reveal a short hallway leading to stairs going up.

At the top of the stairs is another hallway. This one is much longer and has many doors. Offices, meeting rooms and the like lie behind these doors. The large control room fills the area. While it is deserted now, there is evidence that people have been here.

Just then Slade's senses pick up something.

Slade - "I smell something strange..."

He leads you to a doorway next to what appears to be an elevator. He opens the door and the body of a woman falls out into the corridor. She is quite dead.

The elevator slides open to reveal a woman. She has a pistol in her hand.

Beth - "Who are you? What do you want here? What-- Oh no... Not another one..."

Carefully avoiding the three newcomers, Beth bends down to examine the body.

Beth - "She's dead... I'd say for about a day. The blood drained from her body... My name is Dr. Beth Williams. Welcome to the future."

GM Notes:

Tarantula and Rem can arrive with Beth and the others when they post.

Mail From: Shadeblade Date: Thursday 7-Dec-89 01:08 EST

You might want to check out my post. I figured that Doug, even though a mutant of sorts, wouldn't be able to accept what is really happening, at least not yet. About the only way to rationalize the events is as a vivid dream...

Spectrum's Comments: Somebody elses nightmare is more like it.

SUBJ: Doug Ballant (R) FROM: Shadeblade 12/07/89 S#: 46182

"Well... Let's just say I've lost count of the times I've appeared in one place or another. Actually, this type of situation happens to me quite a bit. In all probability, this is another one of those crazy dreams I get. It doesn't take too much thought to realize that this is my mind creating some kind of Sci-Fi movie on me. This is still pretty wild... even for a dream! I guess that that is why I'm not freaked out. If I were to meet an alien OR a moralistic Conan in real life, I wouldn't stop running 'til I hit the next state!"

"You know, Lord Lunatic, I can understand you being slightly crazy fighter. With all of those morals to uphold, it must be a rough road. I wish I could figure out WHY this dream is so strange. I was never much on dream analysis. It's weird, though... None of my dreams have been so vivid before..."

Going with the other two through the doors and up the stairs, Doug continues to comment on the dream's realism. For some reason, Slade and Lunatic find themselves almost hoping that it really IS a dream. Then the body is discovered...

"Whoa... Gruesome. Now I'm working on a Sci-Fi horror. Look out Stephan King! You know, it might be some kind of space vampire or something. Yeesh! I'm glad it's just a dream! I hope I wake up before it gets any stranger..."

Then the door opens, revealing a much more lively woman. Seeing the gun, but not feeling threatened by his fantasy, he listens casually.

"Yeah, I made the space vampire hypothesis. Who knows how this little nightmare's gonna turn out. Thank you for the welcome. I feel obliged to return it. Welcome to my nightmare, good lookin'."

SUBJ: Slade (R) FROM: IRONARCHER 12/07/89 S#: 798583

"Hello ma'am, or Beth, which ever you wish me to refer to you as, and please put the pistol away because I don't think we will hurt you!"

"What happened to her???"

"I am a metamorph and can change form at will, is it safe around here? I would like to revert to human form and if you know of any danger coming near us that I don't pick up with my keen sense of smell can you warn me?!"

Slade changes back to his humanish form and grips his laser crossbow, he examines the body to see if he has ever seen anything of this sort of murder.

Note: Slade is a scientist, and looks to be in his mid twenties but actually he is in his mid hundreds.

SUBJ: Number 6 FROM: Deslock 12/07/89 S#: 90118

- Now what's all this? Dead bodies and space fleets? How long was I unconscious, anyway? -

"Computer, until further notice, track all life signs in this base. Report any appearances, drastic fluctuation, or terminations immediately. If a termination should occur, note and track all life signs in that vicinity."

- Bloodless bodies? This is getting ridiculous. What is loose in this base? -

"Computer, I want a voice lock on that last command. It may not be altered or cancelled by anyone other than myself. Report any attempt to do so to me immediately."

- Now for the space fleet. Hundreds of years this rock goes ignored, now it becomes the Grand Central Station of the space ways. -

"Computer, I'd like an analysis and report on that space fleet above the pole. In the mean time, run diagnostics on all the bases defenses and armaments. If this base should fall under attack, avoid use of systems likely to fail unless continued base security demands otherwise."

- I've got to get this place into working order, or we're not going to last. I guess 'Fred' just jumped to the top of my design priority list. -

With that, I return to my design work, until the computer comes up with some of the requested info.

SUBJ: LORD LUNATIC - Victor Feury FROM: NightStlkr 12/09/89 S#: 802386

"Greeings, M'lady...

::kneels at her feet; takes her hand and kisses it::

...My name is Victor Feury, but thou may call me Lord Lunatic. I know not of the future of which thou doest speak; I only know of the present."

"I am a Mystic Knight from the Barren Lands; I know not of how I didst come to arrive here...perhaps thy insight could shed a little light on this..."

::Looks down at the dead woman; a look of extreme Compassion crosses his face::

"I do not understand how such a cruel action could have been allowed by The Four Winds to take place. My heart doest go out to this fair maiden, as well as my grievances. Such a horrific a deed as this will not go unpunished."

SUBJ: Beth

Beth is somewhat stunned at the sight of the second body. Her thoughts echo those some of the strangers... What is loose in this base?

Feeling that the strangers are not a threat, I put the pistol away and greet them. Beth seems genuine in her appreciate of Lord Lunatic's actions.

'Oh my... I've never been greeted this way before. Please stand up, Victor, you're embarrassing me.'

'It should be all right to change, Slade. And please, just call me Beth. Doug, I fear that this not a dream. This nightmare is quite real. It is the year 2689 and me and a small group of friends appear to be the only people on the planet. Of course we had much of a chance to go exploring yet.'

'As for what happened to her, I'm not really sure. There are bite marks on her throat and her blood is gone. That about sums it up. Perhaps we should go below and meet the rest of us. Perhaps by comparing notes we might be able to figure out what is going on here.'

SUBJ: Slade FROM: IRONARCHER 12/11/89 S#: 840000

Slade picks up body and follows Beth.

SUBJ: Doug Ballant FROM: Shadeblade 12/12/89 S#: 80486

When Beth says the year and the fact that he was QUITE awake, a look of great fear crosses his face, darkening the shadow across it.

"Y... You've got to be kidding. This has got to be a bad dream... Just vivid, that's all. Hey, look. I bet that all I have to do is wake up! Slade! Shoot at me or something! Lord Lunatic! Take a good swing at me! Don't worry, you can't hurt me. Oh, God... Please! Don't just act like I'm the crazy one. Take a shot at me. I want to wake up! Please, God... let this be a dream! If this is true, than I've lost her... Please don't take Trish away."

Doug tries to provoke an attack from anyone, telling them that this isn't real. To a casual observer, it looks like the dude is going to flip out. Thankfully enough, he seems to have forgotten about his sword or hasn't thought of using it yet.

SUBJ: REM FROM: REM9 12/12/89 S#: 449078

"Oh no, Tarantula. Mary, Brawn and Eclypse are still in there. I can't sense them any more. And what is this all about an intruder alert. I think I had better call the others."

>>Beth, this is REM. What is all this about an intruder alert here? If everything is alright, we have an emergency here and could use both you and Number Six here if possible. Mary, Brawn and Eclypse are trapped inside a living Black Forest growing in our Biology Lab. Tarantula and me barely escaped ourselves. I can't sense them any more either. Beth please hurry, I'm scared.<<

As REM waits for a reply, she holds Tarantula a little tighter to stop from shaking.

Lost Heroes #36 - "Fade to Black"

In the sickbay, the Computer comes up with the data requested by Number 6.

'Analysis of alien fleet complete. Alien technology slightly more advanced than current Earth. Weapons systems are similar.'

'Data Correction: Alien fleet has departed orbit, heading for deep space. Projected course will take fleet to the Tau Ceti star system.'

'Data Correction: One alien ship remains in orbit. It is scanning the planet.'

'Update: Continuing to scan base life forms. No unnatural deviations at this time.'

'Status Report: Base defense. Shields are currently operating at 84% efficiency.'

'Status Report: Base Weaponry. Laser Turret number 1 is operating at 92% efficiency. Turret Number 2 is inoperable. Turret Number 3 is operating at 27% efficiency. Missile silos are blocked.'

'Continuing to scan.'

Meanwhile, Beth has met the new arrivals. Doug has some trouble accepting that he is in the future, but before that can be dealt with, Rem telepathically contacts Beth.

Rem and Beth quickly explain to each other what has been happening.

Beth- "We're on our way, Rem! Come on, guys! There's trouble down below!"

Everyone gets into the elevator and quickly descend to the third level of the base. En route, Beth contacts Number 6 via base communications.

Beth - "We've got a problem in the Botany Sphere. Try to locate Eclypse, Brawn and Mary with the scanners."

Number 6 - "I'll get right on it."

Minutes later they arrive at the Sphere and meet Tarantula and Rem.

Rem - "It was horrible! There's this black forest in there! We barely got out!"

At that moment, Number 6 cuts in over the loud speakers.

Number 6 - "I can't explain it, but the computer can't locate them. It's like they don't exist any more...."

SUBJ: Number 6 FROM: Deslock 12/13/89 S#: 128744

- This is odd indeed. Still, let's see what we can find out about it. -

"Computer, since you can not locate the missing personnel, what can you determine about the Botany Sphere? What's in there?"

- Things are getting out of hand, fast. At least we won't have to handle an entire alien fleet. Good thing too, I don't think one laser turret is up to the job. -

"Computer, what information do you have on Tau Ceti? Was this one of the destinations when the Earth was abandoned? Given data available on the alien vessels, what is the probability that they were built by descendants of the Earth?"

- Let's see, what other loose ends are laying about. -

"Computer, what information do you have on the occupants of the cryogenic chambers?"

- At the rate I'm going, it will be a few more centuries before I'm done with any of my personal work. Still, if I can get Fred up and running, it should aid in my other projects. -

"Beth, I've got the computer working the problem, give it a few minutes to come up with whatever it can before you re-enter the Botany Sphere, should you decide that it is necessary to do so."

SUBJ: Black Tarantula FROM: AREION 12/16/89 S#: 819393

"That cuts it!! Three of our number missing...Dead bodies popping up all over the place...A mysterious BLACK jungle in our own base...Three new arrivals showing up in our hanger bay with no memory of how they got there DESPITE our defense shields being in place! We just don't know enough about this new world of ours, AND ITS HIGH TIME WE DID SOMETHING ABOUT IT!"

"I'm taking the native women back to their shrine to help them rebuild. We can branch out from there, using it as an outpost for further exploration. VAL, LORD LUNATIC, maybe one of you help organize a exploration party. After all this IS your world, the Earth I knew died a few centuries ago."

"BETH, you and NUMBER 6 seem to be the most qualified to run the compound, you should remain behind and continue your work here with anyone else who's staying."

"REM I...please...don't take this the wrong way...but I think you should stay too. At least until we get the shrine rebuilt. Its dangerous out there and WHATEVER killed those women is still lurking around...I'm sure it will follow its preferred prey. Besides, BETH and NUMBER 6 wont have any way of getting in contact with me or the others if they should need to, while I can reach you any time I want."

"Well gang...what's it gonna be? You can stay or go as you choose...but I'm going...EVEN IF I HAVE TO DO IT ALONE."

BT stands his ground, awaiting further discussion. He winces in anticipation of REM's response.

SUBJ: Number 6 (R) FROM: Deslock 12/16/89 S#: 787258

"What is it you expect to accomplish at that site, Tarantula? It lacks the equipment necessary to examine this territory, as well as any defenses against the kind of opposition we've already encountered. In addition, returning the sisterhood to their former home might well trigger a reversion to their old habits."

SUBJ: Black Tarantula FROM: AREION 12/16/89 S#: 43331

"I'm talking about manned exploration NUMBER 6...technological surveillance is your end, and I'm confident that, given time, you'll learn how to run this base, inside and out. That's why I wanted you to remain here. Excuse me if it seems a bit old fashioned, but I prefer the up close and personal approach...I want to see what's out there...FIRST HAND. Besides I can't take this sitting around any more...I mean, I'm beginning to feel like a fifth-wheel. I've got to get off my rump and DO SOMETHING!"

"I don't think there's much danger out there of the kind of attacks we've experienced in here. It seems to me they were launched at the compound not us... we just happened to be here. Besides, we can't lollygag around sitting on our hands scared of what MIGHT happen. We can't afford it...the stakes are just too high. Whatever DOES happen, we'll handle when the need arises as best we can. We're only human, our best is all anyone can ask of us!"

"As for the sister going back to their...Darker...ways, I doubt it. Even if they could work up the guts, I'm going to be through there constantly, I'm not talking about reestablishing their society and leaving. Like I said, after the shrine is rebuilt I intend to use it as a central point for farther reaching expeditions. If there are other villages around, perhaps we can establish the shrine as a trade center so the sisters wont HAVE TO resort to what they have in the past."

SUBJ: REM FROM: REM9 12/17/89 S#: 419585

"But what about our friends in the forest Tarantula? We can't just leave them there. We have to try to get them out before we do anything else. Even after that, wouldn't it be a better idea to get this place working right and then go out from here? I mean if you are right and whatever is killing people follows them, then aren't you sending them all to their deaths? I agree that we should start exploring this planet (mentally only to Tarantula, **Although we will discuss you leaving me behind here later!!**), but let us do it right. I mean we have all those vehicles upstairs (a slight tremor of remembrance goes through REM) that is if Number Six can fix them. And as far as you being a fifth wheel around here, let me tell you something mister. You saved my life just now and don't you forget it ya big dummy." With that REM gives Tarantula a kiss on the cheek and has this huge grin slowly creep across her face.

SUBJ: Number 6 FROM: Deslock 12/17/89 S#: 420671

"We each do what we must, Tarantula. If you feel you must leave this place, then you must. Still, now that the energy damping satellites are gone, we needn't saddle REM with all our communications needs. There's bound to be portable radio equipment around here, you can take it with you. I have a feeling we'll be needing each others assistance for some time to come."

SUBJ: Beth

'They're-- they're gone!? Put Mary is in there!! And the others! I mean... She's me! We're...'

Beth is stunned for several moments. He feelings for her 'sister' controlling her emotions.

'I hated her for so long... And now... Why?!'

After a few minutes, Beth becomes more rational.

'If you feel that you must go, Tarantula, so be it. I wish you success. In the meantime, if what the computer says is true, we shouldn't go into that sphere until we can understand what we are dealing with. Perhaps one of the robots that attacked us when we awoke could be repaired and sent in to investigate? Number 6 isn't the only one who understands robotics here after all. However, our first priority is to find out who is killing the women. If you would be so kind, Slade, follow me to the medical area so that I can do an autopsy on the body.'

SUBJ: Doug FROM: Shadeblade 12/18/89 S#: 86723

Doug is now silent, stunned at the situation and trying to organize his mind.

((Wait a sec, guy... Get a hold on yourself! This is beginning to look TERRIBLY real. No dream, guy. Just think for a moment. You've never been teleported this far before. Somehow I slipped through time or something. If I got here, then there must be a way back. In the mean time, the situation still stands. I've NEVER 'ported to a safe situation yet. It's trouble that brings my teleport out, so that means that this place has got troubles. No kidding... You saw that girl! She looked like she should have been in a Dracula movie. From what else I've heard, this place has got more trouble than that. You can see it in these people's eyes. They're all tougher than nails, but how long will they hold out? You can taste the stress... By the way, guy, you've stopped shaking. Now stop being a piece of furniture and do something.))

"Ahem... Sorry about that outburst. Won't happen again. Can anyone fill me in on what's going on? I've figured out that you've got some kind of vampire on your hands. Any fool could see that. I've also heard something about missing people being lost in the forest or something. Then there's the "shrine", whatever that is... I hate to be an inconvenience, but I might be able to help a bit if I knew more about what this place is and what's going on..."

SUBJ: Slade FROM: IRONARCHER 12/18/89 S#: 842620

Slade will follow Beth so she can examine the body.

"Excuse me Mr. Tarantula but if you need help rebuilding something (I think you said a shrine) I can follow you and change into something that can help!"(i.e. a bulldozer, crane, something huge to carry rubble, or any other thing imaginable (within reason).

"Doug, What does that instrument do? And Beth and Number 6,I know a lot about robots!"

SUBJ: Number 6 FROM: Deslock 12/18/89 S#: 794492

"Yes, I suppose you new comers could use some info on what's going on here. There's a lot of info to cover here, so I'll stick to the high-lights."

"It seems we're on the Earth, in the year 2635, give or take a century, around about the New York/Pennsylvania border. The inhabitants of the Earth abandoned this world because of a strange, energy-devouring virus. They set up a series of energy damping satellites around the planet, hoping this would kill the virus, and left for greener pastures. Since that time, this world has served them as a penal colony. A few months ago, there was a lapse in the energy-damping field, and the cryogenic tubes in which we were stored (that's another story) thawed us out. Almost immediately we were attacked by robots sent by Dr. Destroyer and by a giant alien lizard creature. We discovered the Shrine of the Sisterhood, a cult that worshipped a giant, mutated spider and practiced human sacrifice and cannibalism. The spider was destroyed, and the remainder of the Sisterhood brought with us for safekeeping. We relocated to this main base, and found 6 more cryo tubes (as yet, unexplored), and the ghost spirit of a heroine from our time, Solitaire, although her long isolation has driver her quite insane. In addition, it appears there is a strange, black forest in our botany sphere, which has swallowed up three of our group. I was unable to assist them, having myself only just awakened from major genetic reconstruction (another long story). As if this isn't enough, a large space battle has just finished in orbit. The victorious fleet finished off the last of the energy damping satellites prior to departing, leaving only a scout vessel behind. That pretty much brings us up to date. Oh, you're not the first ones to simply 'appear' in this base, although I don't know what's become of the last one who did. Any questions?"

Spectrum's Comments: I'm not sure what's scarier. All the weird stuff that I came up with or that people understood it!

SUBJ: Doug FROM: Shadeblade 12/19/89 S#: 428332

At Slade's query about the heavy-duty instrument case he carries. He absently strokes the case with his fingers as he answers.

"This is the Harmonizer, the only one in existence. My father and I engineered and built everything about it, and it sometimes seems like the only stable thing in my life. As to what it sounds like, I'll give a demonstration when there's more time. With this, I can make everything from rock bands to full orchestras. I'll set you all up a concert you'll never forget when things settle down."

SUBJ: Black Tarantula FROM: AREION 12/23/89 S#: 4992

"There's nothing we can do for them REM, as the old saying goes 'You can't fight what you can't see'! Even your psychic visions can't penetrate the darkness of that forest. As much as it hurts to admit, we can't help them, at least not now...we just don't have the means."

"Yes, It's dangerous, but I'll do all I can to protect the sisters. It'll be a lot harder to get to any of them without anyone seeing it with all of them in a tight exploration party rather than spread throughout some underground base."

"Thank you SLADE, at least I have ONE volunteer. Better start getting ready, I'll be in my quarters if anyone needs me."

Tarantula takes REM's hand tenderly, drawing her to follow him.

"We need to talk..."
