The exploration of the caverns in the ruins didn't go quite as well as planned. After holding off an army of zombies, the Seekers were attacked by a trio of unseen mages. Minor arguments followed and it was finally decided to return to Gateway. Pad and Claudius power up the pillars and all enter.
A moment later they reappear underneath Gateway. The group is escorted by the guards to the surface.
Several messages await the group upon return to the manor. General Logan requests a tactical report on the Elder Artifact and if it can be useful in the battles to come. Sharadin wishes to compare notes with Pad about the operation of the artifact itself.
Everyone else relaxes after the long trip. Wounds are healed, restoring the full group to maximum HPs.
Elsewhere, Armon is putting the moves on one of Sharadin's daughters. She listens as Armon speaks.
"You may call me Sherry. I wouldn't proclaim being a bard so loudly around here. Many mages have a rabid dislike of bards. They find it rather upsetting that individuals who usually don't have the slightest idea what they are doing can cast their spells. I don't mind bards all that much. Their lack of discipline is rather disconcerting however. Perhaps we should go to someplace not so opinionated?"
Over the next several days many new faces arrive at the mansion wishing to join up with the Seekers.
Zynara continues work on her new spell. It is coming along, but is much more difficult work then she had first suspected. So far, so good.
One morning, Validar receives a letter via messenger. It bears the seal of the Baron of Pyris. (See E-Mail, Panther.)

I'll be on vacation next week, so the next post will go up on August 1st. I'll be on often enough to answer questions and post minor notes.
You have several things to talk about in the meantime. What is the group going to do next?? Explore the other pillar locations?? Rest up until spring?? (It is mid-fall for the new players.)
Don't forget that you still have the horde of goodies from the demon to check out and distribute.
Say hello to the new players! ;)
Seeya!!
SUBJ: Tania (R) FROM: Enchantres 07/18/91 S#: 819145
Shivering slightly from the cold, a young woman wrapped in a blue overcoat approaches the Seekers Mansion. Once let in, she'll introduce herself as Tania.
She tells her story as she warms by the fire. 'Much have I heard much of the magical prowess of the Seekers. I've come here today in hopes of apprenticing myself to a powerful mage. The Lady of Mysteries herself spoke to me in my prayers suggesting that I come here to further her cause.'
Taking a better look at the young girl, you see that she stands about 5'5" and probably doesn't weight 100 lbs. Her hair is long and brown. Her eyes a sparkling green. After removing her heavy cloak you see that she wears a low cut blue dress. The symbol of Mystra is worn around her neck. A mace hangs at her right hip, a sheathed dagger on the left.
'As you may surmise, I am a priestess of Mystra and a mage. My mother was also a Mystran Priestess, my father a human mage. I wish to follow in their footsteps and have come to the outlands to prove myself. My magical training is slightly lacking and I need a tutor to further teach me. Will any of you teach me??'
Spectrum's Comments: Here's the first of the newcomers. Tania is a half-elven mage/Priestess of Mystra. This is yet another character from my stable and her defining trait is how timid she is. Tania lasts until the end of the series.
SUBJ: Padraig FROM: GM Shifty 07/19/91 S#: 81930
A 12 year-old boy in dark red-brown robes bustles into the entry hall as Tania is speaking with the servants. Pausing at a mirror, he rakes a hand through his wild red hair to no effect. Throwing a cloak about his shoulders, he says to the servant, "I'm going out to see Sharadin for a Wizard's Conference. I should be back by tomorrow. Tell the others that if they haven't got those magic items identified yet, I'll take care of it on my return."
As he reaches the door, he turns and looks back at the servant with a mischievous grin, "By the way, Validar suggested something about a zombie butler to answer the door and take people's cloaks. What do you think of the idea? I could whip one up without much problem."
Without waiting for a reply, Pad is out the door and heading off to Sharadin's place.
SUBJ: Stephanie FROM: Schar 07/19/91 S#: 398868
Once back home Steph orders a servant to prepare a hot bath. She soaks away her aches and pains. It's nice to be away from all those undead things. I discard my working clothes for a comfortable pair of pants, a blouse and boots.
After several days of lounging around, taking nice hot baths and hours of massages from Fin of the nimble fingers I finally start to feel better.
Discovering several items of equipment have been destroyed, I go out to replace them. The minor items should be simple enough to find, but my bow will be different. It was specially constructed for me by the late Tiger Cat so that my great strength would not be hindered. Off to find a bowyer will be one of my priorities.
I'll also check up on Thunder to see how he is fairing. I spend at least one hour a day tending to his various needs and grooming him. I'll try to find carrots in the marketplace to find him. He just loves carrots!
Otherwise, Steph will mainly keep to herself. She'll spend some time with Ross while Zynie is off doing her magic research. Fin also takes a great deal of my time, of course! ;D
For the New Seekers:
Stephanie is a powerfully built human woman. She stands about 6' all,
have long black hair and eyes, and is very muscular. She is seldom seen without her husband, the multi-talented Finrod.
SUBJ: Claudius (R) FROM: GM Falcon 07/19/91 S#: 830643
An older man, in his mid-twenties stalks in. After a visit with a barber, he had almost literally declared war on society by wearing his hair short. Very short, almost at the level of bristles. He appears to be one who makes an effort to remain clean-shaven, but that effort is at three or four day intervals, giving him a scruffy appearance.
When the new cleric/mage (of Mystra) shows up, Claudius will wander over and engage in small talk. Where are you from? How long have you been in Gateway?, and so on. Finally, he speaks: "Well, we definitely have the capability to help. You'll have to talk to tinplate over there..", he indicates Validar, "..to actually join. He's the leader."
Then, to himself, "..because no one else wanted to have to deal with a backseat general, methinks."
He will spend his time by going to the library, and spending hours at a time poring over materials.
Finally, a vicious smile plays across his face, and he approaches the librarian.
"My lord, I know that you do not allow people to obtain books, and for very good reasons. However, would it be feasible for me to leave substantial collateral behind, and borrow one for a night or two?" With that, he draws his *Wand*, and lays it on the table.
If agreed, he'll take the book, and find a craftsman who deals with.. paper. He will ask that the book be wrapped.
Grinning like a little boy, he'll deposit it in front of Val's book.
The cover reads: "Tactics", written by a Cynalon general from long ago.
A note is left on the first page. It reads:
"Val. Read and enjoy!
Oh, try not to destroy the book out of vengeance, I have a wand riding on its safe return to the library.
Have fun!"
It's unsigned, but the handwriting should make it fairly obvious who is involved.
SUBJ: Armon FROM: Omni Tuens 07/19/91 S#: 824094
Armon smiles happily to Sherry as she makes the suggestion of going somewhere else.
"Certainly... and I understand completely how you feel about bards. However, I don't think of myself as undisciplined... I am merely much more willing to enjoy the finer points of life than many of those who keep me company." He winks as he starts to lead his lovely companion from the table. "Did you have some place in mind, or is it to be a locality of my choosing?"
Later, assuming of course that the other events weren't transpiring simultaneously...
As Padraig exits the house for the conference, he finds Armon leaning on the wall right outside the door, dressed in his extremely bright red cloak. The bard wasn't there moments ago when the young girl entered.
"Good morning Pad! Where are you off to today? By the way, I found some more information about those teleportation devices of yours while you were out tromping around the countryside. You may find it important... oh, I haven't had a chance to check with Sharadin yet on whether or not he knows about it."
SUBJ: VALIDAR (R) FROM: Bl Panther 07/19/91 S#: 470435
Upon receiving the note, Validar will address the assembled Seekers, with the servants forwarding the message to those not available.
"There are some personal matters in Pyris, the barony of my father, that require my immediate attention. Due to the importance, I must leave as soon as possible. With luck, I should be able to return by the early Spring, in time for the War with the Keln Empire. Until that time, I am naming Finrod as presiding leader of the Seekers in my place. Should he not want this responsibility, I leave it up to a democratic process, or however you wish to choose a temporary leader."
As Validar makes his final preparations for the long journey back to his home, he is presented with Claudius' "gift". The noble warrior examines the book for a moment and then snorts derisively. He then sets about to find the mage.
Validar will calmly place the book in front of Claudius and address him with an icy stare.
"Perhaps you think yourself clever or witty, but I find this sort of action to be wholly infantile in nature. I can assure you that I have been thoroughly learned in all forms of military endeavors. I can also assure you that I will never allow myself to be looked upon as a coward. If you had half a brain you would have read this book and you would see that in this Kingdom honor is just as important as life itself to those of noble bearing. Life is meaningless if it holds no honor. To retreat simply to save one's misbegotten skin or to conserve power is a fate worse than death. Once committed to an action, to turn back unnecessarily is cowardice."
"If you do not agree with that philosophy, then you are not only in the wrong adventuring company, but in the wrong nation. Perhaps you would do better to find another one, or else try to fit in to this one."
Regarding those who are applying for membership to the Seekers...
"I am willing to accept anyone who shows promise as a trial member of the Seekers. If the group decides to do some further exploration, this would be a good opportunity to test the mettle of each of you. I shall leave the final decision up to those you actually adventure with. Hopefully, each of you can become a trusted comrade and a valuable member of this mighty team, the Seekers."
Spectrum's Comments: At the time of this post, the true nature of the letter was unknown as it was not important. It was simply a device to move Validar out of the game.
SUBJ: Padraig FROM: GM Shifty 07/20/91 S#: 465325
As Validar tells everyone of his impending trip, Pad steps forward. "If you have a long distance to travel perhaps I can be of assistance. If you could describe someone or some landmark near where you want to go, I could try scrying it up in a Magic Mirror. If I can get a lock on it in the mirror, it will be a simple matter to teleport you there."
As he's leaving to see Sharadin, Pad bumps into Armon. When Armon mentions information about the teleport grid, Pad pauses. "Well, I'm off to see Sharadin right now to discuss that very thing. If you can briefly summarize the information, I'll pass it on to him."
SUBJ: Stephanie FROM: Schar 07/20/91 S#: 517075
"I hope that it's nothing serious, Validar. Have a good journey."
I step forward and give our very serious leader a big hug.
"Perhaps when you return your sense of humor will return as well."
Hmmmm, looks like I'm the bosses wife now!
"What's our next course of action, Finrod?"
Out of Character:
Since Fin has not be around here much lately, it looks like we may have to pick a new temporary leader. Any takers?? With Val and Fin gone I am the member with the longest service in the group, but Steph is definitely not the leader type! Her low INT and WIS ensure this. ;D
SUBJ: Zynara (R)FROM: Tora 07/20/91 S#: 453330
Book work first. I believe I finally get a new weapon. Since my wedding gift was a dagger, I will take that as my next weapon to be proficient in. As for non-weapon proficiencies, I think I will learn how to cook. :) It might be nice to cook my husband and child a meal now and then.
As for my new list for memorizing, I am in town. While in town, I will have 4 unseen servants and a mending spell. This should help out in the mansion. As for second level spells, Melf's Acid Arrow *2 and a continual light. I think the mansion has all of them it needs, if not, continue lighting the place up, otherwise, I will cast it on a stone and give it to one of the needy each day. As for 3rd, I will learn flame arrow, vampiric touch, and the new identify spell. I will continue my experiments with it on the recovered treasure. Now that I know it is safe, let's see what I can come up with. :) With practice, I just might be able to identify things properly. :D
(Now on with the post.)
Zynara spends most of her time running in and out of the lab working on her personal spell and testing out the identify she learned. She reports on the items as she gets the info.
The rest of the time, is spent with Ross and Blod with an occasional sideline with another member of our group.
For the new people. Zynara is a female conjurer. At the moment, she has most of her time taken up in research. When you do get to see her, you will see a lady in her mid 20s. She has thick golden blonde hair down to her knees. This hair is put into a bun when adventuring, otherwise it is down. Zynara's eyes stand out in that they are emerald green with silver flecks. Under certain conditions they turn more silver. This is usually when she is near her husband, Blod, or her child, Ross. In town, she dresses the part of a lady. On the road, she wears bracers and travelling clothes.
If you ask about the child, it was conceived on or near Blod's and her wedding night. (Which I believe was 5 or 6 weeks ago. How close am I GM?) Unfortunately, she was caught on the edge of a haste spell and it lead to very quick birth. Even though Ross appears to be a couple of months old, is development is near new born. Zynara is usually a friendly person to be around. With luck, she will be around for some time to come.
SUBJ: Claudius.. FROM: GM Falcon 07/20/91 S#: 426021
Claudius wordlessly takes the book back, and starts flipping a few pages before he begins to read.
(Rats, I returned that book to the library...adlib time)
"When you outnumber your foe by ten, surround him."
"When you outnumber by five, overwhelm."
"When outnumber by two, engage. Do not give them a no-win situation, they will fight to the death and take many of your men with them."
"On even footage, lightly engage, and probe for weakness." (See 'How to irritate the enemy general)
"When outnumbered, withdraw for the moment in tight order unless you absolutely must fight."
He closes the book. "There are things worth dying for, Validar. Causes worthy of such, no matter what the odds. There are times when glory, and, by YOUR definition of the term, honor, must hold. Note that your definition and mine disagree. Exploring some cave as a means of using up the rest of our time before spring doesn't count."
He smiles coldly and walks away. He proceeds to return the book to the library.
When/if the question comes up over whether anything else should be done before the spring campaigns, Claud looks up: "Maybe we should find out where the Gateway teleporter goes. If this Captain Shea wants to use it, he may want to know where he gets out."
As to a possible leader should Fin not be available, Claud would vote for Pad. However 1) Pad doesn't want it, and 2) he's not exactly the one who's been in this game longest. Democracy time, methinks.
SUBJ: Arocken FROM: Wildchilde 07/21/91 S#: 480887
Everyone's favorite ranger spends the majority of his time healing from the wounds he sustained in the battle with the unseen mages. Arocken himself is very unsure of why he felt so weak during the encounter (Mad, you used Armon's hit points for mine. Oh well.. least I didn't die, right?)
When he has recovered Arocken will purchase 4 dozen arrows to replace the ones he lost in the blast. Along with a new grappling hook and 50 ft of silk rope.
SUBJ: Armon Flamehilt (R) FROM: Omni Tuens 07/21/91 S#: 506228
Armon is disappointed when the encounter with the lovely Sherry ends, but accepts it stoically as he can sense the GM wants him reunited with the rest of the gang. "It has been a lovely evening... I am sure your father would not mind you staying later, but I fear I may speak too boldly so I shall allow you to depart... I hope to be in your company again soon." He bows and kisses her hand as they part.
Later, when Padraig responds to Armon's mention of information...
"Well...it might take a few minutes, and I wouldn't want you to keep Sharadin waiting. I can come along, if you'd like." Armon smiles innocently.
Even Later, when the word comes that Validar will be departing soon, Armon pipes up again. "You're sure there's nothing we can do to help, Val? We're here, you know, and going no where."
At the question of leadership, the carefree Armon will mostly just play observer in the debate, but isn't too enthusiastic at the idea of one of the mages taking over, as he feels they need too much time alone for their studies to effectively 'lead' a group.
SUBJ: Padraig FROM: GM Shifty 07/21/91 S#: 394700

SUBJ: Rooster 1 (R)FROM: ShadowFoxx 07/22/91 S#: 405857
As the group is debating about a new Chief, a trail worn Halfling approaches...
He's about 3 1/2' tall, 70#, & appears to be in his early 30's, though the sun & experiences have taken their toll...
His curly flame Red hair & "Howdy Doody" looks are offset by a grim expression & by a long wicked scar down the entire left side of his face, running through his left eye... a black leather patch covers this w/ a painted red "Jolly Roger" winking jauntily from it...
He stands boldly before you, wearing a homespun wool "Poncho", hood back, wide-brimmed, flat-crowned floppy leather hat tilted back on his head w/ the front pinned up... he's wearing Leather Armor, by the bulk of him, & has the hilt of a Short Sword peeking through the hole next to his head...
He holds a Composite Short Bow w/ both hands crossways at waist level... & while obviously a HairFoot, he's wearing knee high moccasins...
At the first break, he pipes up...
"Be this th' 'stead of "Th' Seekahs"... 'N ya'll "them"?...

He then silently eyes the group shrewdly as they continue...
Spectrum's Comments: Meet Shadowfoxx. You'll be seeing a lot of him and his various characters in the posts to come. He is extremely long winded and loves to write his speach in slang. Figuring out what he was trying to say was a challenge at times.
SUBJ: Padraig (R) FROM: GM Shifty 07/22/91 S#: 489618
Pad heads off to Sharadin's with Armon in tow. After the discussion about the artifacts, Pad has a few questions of his own to ask. First, he asks if Sharadin knows a competent alchemist. Second, he'll ask if Sharadin's ever heard of the concept of a "teleport tower". And finally, he'll ask if Sharadin could help him learn a few key teleport coordinates around the kingdom and into "enemy territory" as well.
During his first chance to relearn spells, Pad takes 2 Non-detection spells and an Extension II. From that point on, he keeps a Non-detection running 24 hours a day, just in case the mages we were playing with decide to learn more about him.
Pad will show great interest in the functioning of the new spell. "What you need to do now, is try it on as many items that you've already ID'd as possible. If the effect isn't random, then the color must have something to do with the properties of the item. I'll proceed with ID'ing the new items. After that's done, we can compare what I learn to the colors you've observed."
"The only thing I'm concerned about are the two items that showed black temporarily. Being as paranoid as I am, I think we might possibly be looking at a couple of cursed items. Do any of our clerics have access to Divination or Augury? I'd like to try and check those items out further before attempting to ID them. On the bright side, if your spell does show curses on items without activating them, it's an extremely useful addition to the process of checking out items."
Pad's Town Spell List:
Magic Missile, Color Spray, Comprehend Languages, Identify x2 (at least initially)
Web, Alter Self, Know Alignment, Improved Phantasmal Force, Mirror Image
Melf's Minute Meteors, Dispel Magic, Fly, Non-detection x2
Otiluke's Resilient Sphere, Magic Mirror, Polymorph Self, Stoneskin
Wall of Force, Extension II, Teleport x2
SUBJ: Padraig (R) FROM: GM Shifty 07/22/91 S#: 497308
Pad will take the time out to introduce himself to the two new members of the party, but he will approach each one separately. Finding Tania after his meeting with Sharadin, Pad formally introduces himself, "Greetings, Tania. I am Padraig, wizard by trade. I am not a native of your planet, I was sucked onto this world during a teleportational accident. Since I can't cross the planes under my own power yet to return home, I have offered my services to the Seekers."
"Obviously, you find this somewhat hard to believe, since I don't appear to be old enough to be an apprentice yet. The story behind that is that I had an accident with a Potion of Youth. Instead of taking away a couple of the years of aging I had suffered in a battle with a ghost, it took off over 30, reverting me to a 12 year old. At my true chronological age, I look something like this," Pad stops and casts an Alter Self spell and assumes a shape approximating his own.
"Well, welcome aboard. This group has a much freer attitude towards the contents of spell books than normal. If you would like to learn any spells from my book, you have only to ask."
"Oh, just a cautionary note, never enter my room or open my book without me. I come from a much more paranoid world than this one, and I've kept to my normal habit of placing traps."
When meeting the halfling, Pad says, "Greetings, Rooster. I am Padraig, a wandering wizard from another world. I joined the Seekers only a few weeks ago myself. It's a good group, even if they have a few weird ideas about things."
"For your own safety, I caution you never to enter my room or tamper with anything I own. I come from a much more paranoid culture and am in the habit of trapping various things."
Mad, this is how Pad intends to get a Teleport coordinate to send Validar home if he wishes Pad's help. Pad will cast an Improved Phan Force and have Validar start describing the proposed coordinate. Pad will use the spell to create an "artist's rendering" of the person or place. After getting the picture set in his mind, Pad will cast the Magic Mirror and try to make contact. If contact is made, Pad will study the real scene/person carefully. Pad can then wait until Validar is ready to leave. When he is ready, Pad will cast another Magic Mirror to reestablish contact, and then cast the Teleport.
At some point, probably with Validar, Pad will go talk to the General about the tactical uses of the teleport grid. Pad will explain the differences between Gateway's "grid" and the one at the ruins. Pad's conclusion is, "Someone is going to have to do a little experimenting to find out where the grid under this city will take you. And, it had better be someone who can get back on their own if need be."
(Gee, I'm talkative tonight, aren't I?)
Pad will ask the rest of the spell casters to assemble to provide support for the Identification process. He'll ask that they carry any spells that they think might come in handy in case something goes wrong. His suggestions are a Detect Poison spell to run over the potions, the Auguries/Divinations mentioned earlier, a Bless on himself, and Remove Curse if anyone knows it.
Pad will attempt to ID the items in the following order: the wand, the dog statue, the broach, potion 1, potion 2, potion 3, potion 4 (skipping any that reads as poison, naturally), the plate armor, the elf-size chain mail, the halfling-size studded leather, the long sword, and the morning star.
Since scrolls 1 & 2 weren't mage scrolls (or at least I assume they weren't), maybe a cleric should try reading them?
The dagger and the ring are the tricky part. I'd really like Auguries or Divinations about the safety of IDing them. On top of that, someone should be standing by with a Remove Curse. If nobody else has access to the spell, Pad can tool one up. But, that means that someone else will have to cast the Identify spell. Does anyone else know it? Would anyone like to learn it? If we can't have a Remove Curse standing by, Pad is in favor of calling in outside help before attempting to ID these items.
By the way, Pad will ask Zynara if he can look at her research notes on the new spell. He's interested to see if he can spot what the differences are between the mechanics of her spell and the standard Identify spell.
Lastly, Pad will see if he can purchase a pregnant animal and a few normal animals of the same species, with the additional stipulation that the creature's normal life span as an adult be greater than 1 year. Without letting Zynara or Blod find out about it, he would like to perform an experiment. He'll cast a Haste spell on all the animals and observe what happens. He'll then compare the effects upon the pregnant animal, the non-pregnant control animals, and lastly, Zynara's experiences.
(No, this isn't ghoulish or morbid. It's just the pursuit of knowledge, a high and noble calling. ];> )

Among the others entering the Seeker's mansion for the first time is another priest of Mystra. He is young in appearance, slight of build, and fair skinned. He wears chain mail, carries a small shield strapped to his back, and wears a bright scarlet cloak over his armor which matches the feather in his hat. On his breast bounces Mystra's symbol, a circle of stars, and at his side is a flail.
Dani enters the mansion rather timidly, standing by the door quietly until he is noticed (and remaining there for as long as necessary. :D ) though once someone speaks with him, he asks to meet with someone who may direct him to the person in charge of new recruits. No doubt meeting with jeers about his strange request, he blushes and seems to be at a loss for words.. Finally turning and starting to leave the mansion as his embarrassment overcomes him.. "Pardon me.. I didn't mean to disturb you.. I'll just be going.. "

Well, I gave you a lot to mull over in Frontier. By the way, just a reminder, Pad has Magic Mouths on all his important items, etc. set to go off in anyone but himself tampers with or tries to open them. His room is actually only guarded with a Wizard Lock and a Magic Mouth. The coin purse that he wears on his belt, which contains only a little walking around cash (say < 100gp), is Magic Mouthed to say "You are attempting to steal from a powerful mage. Stand perfectly still or you will become a smoking pile of ash or worse. Thank You"

SUBJ: GM Notes: (R)FROM: GM Mad 07/22/91 S#: 826630
Pad and Armon arrive at Sharadin's estate in the late morning. The family is having brunch and invite you to join them. Situated around a large table are Sharadin, Sherry and Terry.
Armon does note which twin is which. It seems that they part their hair differently.
"Padraig! Good to see you. Sit, have some lunch if you're hungry. What have you learned about the 2nd artifact? Feel free to talk in front of the girls. They know as much as I do about the Elder Artifacts."
Answers to Pad's questions...
"Yes, there is an skilled alchemist in Gateway. His name is Pendral. He runs a small shop off the market place."
"A teleport tower? No, I don't believe that I've heard the term before."
"I can provide you with maps of the Kingdom. Those are easy to come by. There are maps of the wildlands of Keln, but their accuracy is in doubt. The further you travel from Gateway, the more inaccurate they become."
Later, Sharadin gets around to his own discoveries.
"The artifact under Gateway appears to be an early model. Based on what I heard, the one under the ruins was far more advanced. I would surmise that the Elder's continued to expand upon their devices, improving them as their knowledge grew."
"I've also been able to study the runes in the Gatherer's tomb. I am beginning to believe that it's not a destructive device at all. I believe that it was created to seek out those whom the Elder's deemed worthy. Furthermore, I suspect that once it located a worthy subject, it sent that subject to the Elders. Perhaps that was the function of the beams that shot out of its eyes?"

Yet another new face enters the Seekers Mansion. He is tall, but thin. He is wearing heavy brown robes that cover him from head to toe, and cast a shadow over his face. Underneath the robe, a set of strange armor that looks like leaves banded together can be seen. He carries by his side a scimitar, and a few spears across his back. "Hello Seekers, my name is Carnery, I am a priest of Silvanus, Lover of Nature. I would be greatly honored if I could join you in your quests. I am a skilled woodsman, long with my other talents."
Spectrum's Comments: I don't remember much about this guy, so he must not have lasted very long..
SUBJ: VALIDAR (R) FROM: Bl Panther 07/23/91 S#: 442241
The Seekers' leader considers Padraig's offer, then decides to accept his help, if it can be accomplished.
"To be honest, even with all the talk of teleportation, I hadn't first thought of that as a mode of travel. Of course, you have to realize that I am sometimes TOO used to being independent in my personal actions. Regardless, I thank you for your offer of assistance."
"I would think that a suitable landmark for you to locate would be the military statuary located in the courtyard of my father's castle. I should be able to give you quite the detailed description of it and as much of the surrounding area as you may need."
In response to the various Seekers expressing concern over his journey...
"Do not worry yourself, my friends and comrades, I must return for a personal matter. It is not as serious as it could be, but it is something that I must deal with myself. Without going into any more detail, I expect to return here to Gateway in plenty of time to engage in the War on Keln. In truth, it would take an army of beings from the lower planes to keep me from it."
Validar will take the time to meet with General Logan, regarding the workings of the teleportation apparatus and the possible uses and advantages it may offer us in the impending conflict. Validar will volunteer the Seekers as an advance group in the War effort, should the General decide to use such forces.
In the meantime, it would be quite prudent to make some cursory inspections of the areas to which the teleporter leads.
Regarding the distribution of the magick items we have recovered, Validar will allow those few items which were temporarily claimed during the previous adventure to keep those items, should they wish. Beyond that, I am willing to listen to requests, before making any other decisions on item distribution.
A general description for the new potential Seekers:
Validar is a somewhat tall and striking figure. He stands just over six feet in height and his manner betrays his noble standing. The noble warrior often dresses in military outfits, when not fully armored. In neither case, no unit designations are worn, instead his coat of arms is proudly displayed. An ebon griffon is upon a field of contrasting royal blue and silver triangles.
Validar wears his brown hair closely cropped and sports a mustache. Dark brown eyes gaze out at the world around him.
Not wishing to shirk his duties as leader of the Seekers, even with his temporary absence pending, Validar will take a few moments to meet individually with each of the prospective Seekers.
The noble warrior will take a few moments to ask each of the newcomers some questions about their past, without becoming to personal, and attempt to solicit a reasonable set of credentials to warrant membership in our band. This is more along the lines of personal skill and a question of heart and determination, rather than experience.
Once suitably satisfied that each of the applicants understands the danger involved and the commitment required, and that are not simply starry-eyed commoners hoping to fulfill a fantasy, Validar will welcome them to the Seekers.
A side note on the matter of the distribution of the magical items in question, Validar will show an obvious interest in the plate armor. Such a thing is a matter of pride with those of his ilk. The opportunity to call such an exquisite suit of armor as his own is almost more than he can stand, although he will certainly not allow such a feeling to actually show.
Spectrum's Comments: Twelve years later the armor was his. Arocken brought it with him in the New Frontiers game..
SUBJ: Padraig (R) FROM: GM Shifty 07/23/91 S#: 84588
Pad sits down to brunch with Sharadin and his daughters. Pad informs him that he has no new information about the artifacts since last they talked. He does mention the goings on in the caverns under the other night. And, he mentions that Armon believes he has uncovered some new information from his studies.
Moving on to other business, Pad explains the concept of the "teleport tower". He buzzes through a bunch of magical equations that describe the instability of the landing coordinates, at least partially for the amusement value of baffling Armon. "Now, at the higher power levels you get the Teleport Without Error spell and lock down the variance. But, there's a way to greatly reduce the risk of using the standard spell. On my world we built special towers in all the places we commuted to often."
"Physically, the towers were 3 stories tall. Only the third story had a floor. The tower was empty space below that, with a large pile of hay or something similar at the bottom. The roof was built as a cistern and kept filled with water."
"The floor on the third story was inscribed with a unique and intricate design. We called it a 'staring pattern'. The third floor rooms in all the towers were identical except for that design. By giving someone a drawing of the staring pattern, we could easily trade teleport coordinates of enough detail to keep the risk factor in the top 2 categories. As an added precaution, to foul up those of evil persuasions, many of the patterns incorporated the symbol of one or more of the good gods prominently."
"So, as you can see, a person doesn't care when he's teleporting to one of these towers if the spell wavers. If he comes in low, he's inside the tower and falls onto a bed of hay. If he comes in high, well, it's a bit more risky, but he does have the cistern of water to aim for. A cold dunking being preferable to smashing against the pavement any day."
As Sharadin explains his theory about the Gatherer, Pad lets out a smug, "Hah!" Turning to Armon he says, "I told Validar he was jumping to conclusions about the things purpose too quickly."
Pad will go down to the market and locate the Alchemist. To save trouble explaining his appearance, he'll ask Sharadin to provide him with a letter indicating that Pad is indeed a powerful mage. After getting through the initial disbelief, Pad will ask the Alchemist what he knows about homoculi.
Pad will attempt to get coordinates for Validar's jump home. If successful, he'll remind Val that a small possibility for accident does exist in the spell. If Val decides to go this way in spite of the small danger, Pad will cast the spells needed to do it as safely as possible. Before leaving Validar, Pad will tell him that he'll check up on him every week. "If you are ready to come back to Gateway, just give me a signal. Maybe you could tie a white handkerchief around your left wrist or something."
Where Pad conducts his experiment depends on the size of the animals involved. If they're cats or the like, he'll do it in his room. (After carefully stowing away anything that could be damaged by a bunch of hyperactive cats.) If they are larger, he'll take the animals outside the city and perform the experiment in some convenient field.

Armon also sits down for the meal with the Sharadin clan, smiling delightfully at the mage's daughters, but thinking better of mentioning the night before unless the subject is breached by Sherry.
When Padraig mentions the new information he's uncovered, Armon decides its time to speak up. "Yes, Sharadin. I'm not sure if your research uncovered similar information or not, but I was able to uncover the locations which the other teleporters lead to- approximately, at least. I don't know if either you or Pad here have a spell or device which could blindly scry to the location, or not. If necessary, I'm willing to search the local taverns and inns for any travelers who have come from those areas."
Armon squirms when Pad turns the conversation to events over his head. When the opening comes, he quickly retaliates..."By the way, Sharadin, I understand you were once a warrior... did you ever fight in anything resembling this upcoming war?"
The young bard will assumable leave when Padraig does, being uncomfortable in the presence of Sherry AND her father. He will politely excuse himself, sneaking in a wink if possible.

Carefully investigating the pillars, he will carefully transcribe the symbols therein onto a piece of parchment. Then he will thank the guards, and leave.

I shoot a strange glance at the boy when he mentions going to attend a wizards meeting. He certainly doesn't look old enough to cast spells! I don't say anything though.
Inside the first person I come across is Claudius. 'I'm from the north lands of the kingdom. My parents settled down in a small village. A nice and peaceful place to grow up. I've only been in Gateway a few days now.'
I listen closely as he tells me to see this Validar person so that he can approve of me joining. 'Uhm, could you kindly point him out?'
Once I do locate Validar, I will pretty much repeat what I said earlier.
I try to make away around the group, quickly picking up on the names and the profession that goes with them.
At his convenience, I speak to Validar. 'There's not a whole lot for me to tell. My mother is a Priestess of Mystra and an elf. My father was a human mage. I'm following in their footsteps, being a half-elven novice priestess and mage. Mystra planted the suggestion in my mind that I come here. I am ready to help the group out as best I can.'
One afternoon I chat with Pad. I smile as he weaves his tale. 'I do believe you, Padraig. The Lady of Mysteries works in mysterious ways. Is that not one of the joys of magic? No matter how much you know there is always something new to learn. In a world filled with great fire breathing dragons and other fantastic creatures, discovering a mage that is youthful in appearance is not that unbelievable. As I mentioned before, I am looking to apprentice myself to a mage. My parents could always teach me so much, but my studies must be finished by another. I was my mother's wisdom who decided this. She sited that I being their child, they may go easy on my training. A thing that could easily spell disaster out in the wilds. Would you be interested in having a sixteen year old half-elven lady apprentice?'
I offer what minor clerical magic that I can pray for the item identification. 'I can supply you with the Bless and Detect Poison. The other spells are beyond my current ability.'
When the process gets going I will silently watch as the more experienced mages go to work. I watch in wonder at the new spell. 'I does appear to be a color code of sometime. The simplest one to decipher is the aura about the magical weapons. It would appear that red is the color of Enchantments. The various hues appear to be an indication of power.'
I chase after Dani when he turns to leave. 'Hold fellow Mystran! These are good people. I'm sure that they would take you in. There is much going on right now. Be patient and relax. My name is Tania. I'm also new.'
In the days that follow I hang around the other spellcasters taking great interest in what they are working on. 'What are these strange symbols that you are working on, Claudius. I've also heard talk of Elder Artifacts. You've discovered one?'
I try to talk to Zynara as much as I can. 'I heard about the circumstances of your son's birth. Truly, the Lady of Mysteries was watching over you that day!'

General Logan smiles when Validar offers the Seekers as an advance group in the war.
"Fear not, Validar. The Seekers shall have an important role in the battles to come. That role has yet to be determined, but it will be of vital importance."
At Sharadin's place, the girls giggle amongst themselves as the meal progress. It's as if there's an inside joke going around that only they know. They both smile sweetly at Armon.
Sharadin and Pad continue to talk. (And Sharadin is definitely a lad.)
"An interesting and useful concept this teleporting tower. Magic and magicians are not so united in this portion of the world. Many powerful mages died in the war. It took many years for those who followed to gain power and hone their art. There are few known powerful mages known in this area. I'm sure that many secret themselves away from public watch. As it is, an official mages guild does not exist in this area. Perhaps this situation should be rectified."
Sharadin provides Pad with a letter of introduction for Pendral.
"He's a feisty old elf, but he knows his stuff."
When Armon brings up the question about Sharadin's warrior days.
"No, nothing on this scale. I was born a few years after the war. I had an accident of sorts during an adventure. More like a blessing in disguise. Me and my companions were battled a Red Dragon far to the north. It was a fierce battle, no quarter was offered on either side. Unexpectedly, the cavern floor collapsed. Myself and the dragon plunged into the darkness and landed in a pool of glowing water. I later learned that it was a Pool of Power. The dragon fled after the dunking. Later I realized that my intelligence was greatly increased. To my dismay, so was that of the dragon. Magic became very easy to me. I hung up my sword and began my career as a wizard. I've had several inconclusive encounters with that dragon in the years since. He too was altered. He used magic as a human mage might. A fearsome combination. I was must pleased to learn that my gift was inherited by my daughters. They both have an incredible aptitude for magic."
When Armon mentions that he figured out where the locations for the teleporter in the ruins go to, Sharadin gives him a look of mild surprise.
"Do you intend to keep this a secret? Tell us."

Claud works on translating the elder symbols into Keln and Common. It's a painstaking task. It could very well take months to complete decipher the language. (It is difficult to learn after all.)

I am going to be off Q-Link for an as yet undetermined time. That is the main reason behind Validar's temporary departure. Hopefully, once I get myself resettled back in Albuquerque, after having spent the past 7 months here in PA, I will have my system up and running and Validar will be able to rejoin the Seekers. Until then, fare well.
Spectrum's Comments: And that was Validar's last post. As he noted, he was moving crosscountry again and taking the time off to resettle and get back into the swing of things. At this time he did plan to return to the game. Alas, it never happened. We originally figured that he'd be gone for a few weeks and it turned out to be a few months. By that time, most of the other characters that he enjoyed playing the game with were gone as well. So Validar never did return. It was probably for the best as he was on and off Q-Link until the network shut down anyway. Twelve years later we picked up with Validar's adventuers in the New Frontiers game in the forum. Over there you can see why he was called back home and what it all led to.

Armon listens attentively to Sharadin's tale. When he comes to a stop, the inquisitive bard quickly darts out some questions.
"So this dragon is still around? And the pool?"
When prompted for the information, Armon doesn't hesitate to provide it.
"According to my information, the Elder words key to different locations. Magus is the word that leads here, to Gateway. Wolde leads to Shadowkeep. Radle leads to New Keln. Cruth is the word which leads to North Ending. Lenic takes you to High Watch. Sokob goes to an island in the southern sea. I won't pretend to know where all of these locations are, and I realize these are just broad analysis's...but it is a starting point."
Later, while the debate over the new party leader is still alive, Armon will wait until the majority of the party is gathered in one room, then endeavor to gather everyone's attention, counting on his bright cape and natural 'charm' to do the trick.
"Now, as I understand it... and I pride myself on understanding my tales correctly... the Seekers formerly had two leaders, before one departed. Since the differences between mages and warriors have become increasing undeniable recently... and lo and behold, we happen to be missing a leader... why not make co-leaders again, one mage, one warrior?"

The days pass and I greet the newcomers as they arrive. Until Carnery that is!
"Ugh! Not another druid!!"
[Out of Character note here. Steph had a huge disagreement with a former PC druid. Simply put he was a twit. So she has a dislike of druids. No offense, Cirius. ;D]
When I learn how Pad is going to take Val home I get an idea. One night I'll try to corner Pad.
"Uhm, excuse me. I know that we have not always seen eye to eye. Like Fin said, I kinda act without thinking. Thinking makes my head hurt. I have a huge favor to ask you. Could you take me and Finrod to my home?? I can give you a good description of the farm where I grew up. I'm sure that my father would like to meet my husband. Could ya do it?? Please?"
When Armon brings up his ideas on leadership...
"Sounds good to me. Originally, the Seekers had one leader. A Priest of Heiron-something-or-the-other by name of Cereld was the leader. Later on Val became the co-leader. Mainly to avoid arguments. [Yes, we've had lots of interesting arguments in the Seeker's history.] But ever since Cereld, Dar and Araduin disappeared it's been Val. With them gone, that only leaves Fin, Val and myself from the original Seekers. Perhaps we are making too much of all of this. To Steph, "You understand that the Teleport spell is not without risks. It is not something I use frivolously. I offered Validar the opportunity, because the dangers of using the spell were less than the danger for a single man riding all the way back to his home alone. If it is not imperative that you go see your parents, I would advise that you not ask to be teleported there."
To Tania, "I don't think I am the right person for you to apprentice yourself to. I am a specialist mage, myself. "Aye, I got the time, mage.", Pendral tells Pad. "Ye be speakin' of 2000 gold for the task. Since ye've come this far, then you 'ave the necessary spells? I'll be needin' some of your blood."
When questioned by Armon, Sharadin adds:
"The dragon still lives. Goes by the name of Heatstroke. The impact of the dragon into the Pool shattered the ground underneath. The Pool drained away into the earth."
A look of great interest comes over Sharadin's face when Armon lists the believed destinations of the pillars.
"I've heard of most of those places."
He rummages throw a stack of scrolls and finally pulls out a map of the Keln lands.
"Shadowkeep was the palace of the Kelnar himself, the Emperior of Keln. That's where the final battle of the war took place. We still don't know what really happened there. I've heard tales since that no one has been able to locate the palace since. It's as if it no longer exists. If this pillar does go into Shadowkeep then this one may merit investigation."
"Northending? That would have saved them some time. Too late now. Northending was the barony of Lord Karn, the last know possessor of an Elder Artifact called the Sword of Doom. We sent an adventurer group up there to try and locate it. Haven't heard from them since."
"From what I've heard of Highwatch, it was an mountain outpost between Keln and the barbarian lands to the north."
"There are many islands in the southern sea. It could be any of them."
"And the last pillar goes to New Keln. Where the enemy is gathering its forces."

Pad pulls out a small pouch and dumps a handful of small gems into Pendral's hand. "Ok, let's get to work. The Seekers are probably going to want to head out again soon. I'd like too get this finished before then."
"By the way, do you also make ink for magic scrolls? And would you be interested in the carapaces from a couple of land sharks?"
Pad rolls up his sleeve and prepares to give some blood.

I smile slightly when Claudius agrees.
"I guess that would be a good place to start. Seeing if we can go to New Keln. Would be a big help."
"Since everyone seems to be involved with their own projects right now, why don't we wait a few weeks before going on. Will give us time to rest and I can get my bow finished."
Upon seeing how much money is available, I summon all of the Seekers for a distribution.
"No sense in letting all this money sit around. All the older Seekers will receive 1000 gp to do with as you wish. This does include buying new equipment and such. The new Seekers will recieve 500 gp. This will give you some money to buy any additional equipment and in the case of Rooster some new clothes." ;D
"Oh, is this okay, Claudius??"
Assuming that it is, I go to lay down for awhile. All this thinking has made my head hurt. ;D

'Bummer!' I say when I can only learn a few of the spells I desired. 'Lady Mystra must not wish for me to learn those spells. Perhaps one day I shall understand her reasoning.'
My spirits perk up noticeably when Claudius shows me his own spell book.
'Oh thank you! Thank you!' I'm so excited that I give him a small kiss on the cheek and then go off to study once more.
I'll give Color Spray and Protection from Evil another shot.
When Lady Stephanie decides to hand out money to use newbies, I get even more excited. 'I'm gonna like being a Seeker!'
After hearing Claudius talk about teleporters and needing mage power to use them, I try and corner him to talk. 'Please, Mage Claudius, could you tell me about this artifact you spoke of? I am greatly curious.'

Claudius nods rather dumbly when Steph hands out the funds for purchasing equipment. His head is starting to hurt also.
When Tania kisses him on the cheek, he looks rather surprised. When she uses the term 'mage' with his name, as if a title, he flushes slightly.
Trying to look worldly beyond his years, quite a feat (or lesson in futility) one might add, he speaks: "We discovered some teleporters scattered through the land, including under Gateway. They were erected by the Elder, a race that lived long before any of us. It is powered by magic, and will send anyone who uses it to a certain predetermined place. The problem is, we don't know where the predetermined place is, and I'm suggesting we find out before some bright militia officer sends his army through and winds up in say...Shadowkeep."
