The Frontier #54
The main group of Seekers continues to ride towards Gateway, unaware of the barricade ahead of them. They mostly talk amongst themselves as they ride.
Several miles ahead, the scouts have encountered a blockade. Dar suddenly comes up with a plan to deal with the guards. He proposes to have Bernice to lure the guards into an area trapped by an Entangle spell. He awaits her response.
See last post for full details.
GM Notes:
Again, not much for the rear group to do. Assuming that the plan of attack is decided upon in the next few days, I'll have a full update posted on Sunday. (Can't do it earlier due to uncontrollable circumstances; i.e. work.)
Take it away!
SUBJ: Bernice FROM: Modesty1 08/23/90 S#: 809803
(Sorry, Dar, didn't sign up for a few days and missed your post) :(
Bernice looks at Finrod as if to say "We've got to talk sense into him".
When Dar stops talking Bernice begins "Dar, Dar, Dar. We're a SCOUTING party. Remember? Find the trouble and report it. That's it. No heroics! This is too big a job for just us. Cereld TOLD me to keep an eye on you, and for just this reason." She attempts to pat his shoulder. "I can't let you do this. Sorry, partner, but we've GOT to go around." Bernice trys to get a commanding look on her face (Don't laugh, she's serious!) "So, I'M going around and getting a better look. You coming?"
Bernice will turn around and moves silently in a wide arc around the guards. (Hides in shadows too if possible.) She glances back to see if Dar and Fin are coming, but keeps going. She'll attempt to get closer to the city, but turns back in time to met the main group as planned.
Striking out on her own,

The handsome Elf's features brighten when Dar suggests his plan, but darken guiltily when the little halfling brings up the fact that they are just a Scouting party... he had indeed almost fallen into his accustomed action-oriented ways.
"Bernie, you are right: we need to gather more info on this group before taking action...Dar and I both thank you for setting us straight on that point. Here is my suggestion... you sneak back through the wood line and stop the main party before they get close enough to be discovered. Dar and I will remain here, and sneak closer to the roadblock and try to learn more. After all, these ARE humans, they may be friendly, or even able to be influenced."
If Bernice moves out as he suggests, and goes back to halt the main party, then Finrod will turn to Dar, and outline the following plan:
"Dar, we should split up: we make less noise that way. You sneak deeper into the woods, and then around beyond the guards, to find out what is beyond them and see if you can find out more about Gateway itself. I will, meantime crawl up on my belly closer to these guards, and try to overhear and observe more closely their purpose and intent... there is no guarantee that they are unfriendly, and I do not wish to attack them unnecessarily. Also, even if they ARE unfriendly, if there is a path by which we can sneak the main party past them without getting involved in an unnecessary and draining fight, then we should avoid them. Remember, we cannot fight the entire besieging army alone, and any unnecessary fighting makes that more likely to happen. Let us heed our wise halfling friend and do our job of reconnaissance."
"So, what say you, Bernie, will you go back and warn the others? And you, Dar, will you sneak around and see what lies beyond this barrier? I will essay to gather more on the barrier and it's manpower."

looks sheepishly at Bernice as she proceeds to 'set him straight'. With a heavy sigh he agrees with her and Fin casting a glance towards the men even as his hand strays to his sword hilt. Dar smiles and speaks.." Ahh Bernice, you are correct in your assessment of this situation. Cereld did want us only to scout and I wish to thank you for 'saving me from myself' as well."
Dar's expression turns more serious at Fin's proposed plan that he eagerly accepts. He winks at Bernie.. "And I promise.... no fighting along the way or return ok?" Dar then turns and quickly vanishes among the brush and trees to seek his way as planned.
Spectrum's Comments: Bernice is a fierce little halfling when riled up! No one wants to cross her.
GM Update:
The plan to attack the guards as been ditched. Finrod then proposes as secondary plan, and assuming that Bernice goes along with it, is put into action.
The scouts split up. Bernice scurries back to warn the main group of the blockade ahead.
Finrod goes to give the guards themselves a closer examination. Crawling silently towards them, he is able to come within 20 feet of them.
He watches them for many minutes. The guards themselves appear unskilled. They're keeping a poor watch on the road and mostly talking amongst themselves. The average age is very young. The symbol of Hextor is emblazed on their shields.
Further on, Dar moves towards Gateway. He makes good time covering the rolling hills. Finally, he reaches the top of a hill and is able to see all before Gateway. No fighting is going on at this moment.
Two large groups of goblins are camped not too far away from the north and south of the city.
To the west and away from the base of the cliff, more goblins are camped. Several siege machines are seen; ballista's and heavy catapults.
About half a mile from the city is a large impromptu camp. Many tents make up this small village. Mostly seen in this area are humans, warriors and priests of Hextor. Ominously, several ogres and hill giants are spotted.
Elsewhere, Bernice reaches the main party. She quickly tells them of the guards lurking ahead of them.
Your turn again!
SUBJ: VALIDAR (R) FROM: Panther13 08/26/90 S#: 845315
When Bernice returns to the advancing main group of Seekers, Validar will stop and dismount, asking Bernice to tell her story.
Upon hearing that there is an impromptu guard post up ahead, Validar will address the rest of the Seekers.
"We should continue on from this point off the road. Our scouts may have been able to get closer to the guard post, but this many men and horses will be noticed at a further distance, even if those guards are not the keenest."
"I believe, however, that unless Gateway has already fallen these guards will be of minimal skill at best. The Hextorites are not the most skillful of strategists and are likely to commit their best forces to the assault itself. We should be able to route these guards with little or no trouble. I suggest we allow Bernice to lead us to the hiding place from which our scouts sighted this post and use a two-pronged attack to destroy the guards quickly. This post is far enough away from the main group that its destruction may well go completely unnoticed."
"We could have those of us with missile weapons move around to the other side of the post and begin raining missiles upon them, while the remainder ride in on horseback from the other direction and crush them between us, much like a hammer and anvil. I doubt that they will be expecting any attack from this direction. The post is probably set up as a stop for the reinforcements we destroyed at the orc stronghold."
"Let us ride!"
SUBJ: FINROD FROM: SGT STONEY 08/26/90 S#: 94803
Lying quietly in the brush near the guards, Fin listens mostly to glean information from the conversations of the guards. How long have they been out here? When do they expect to be relieved? Is there a roving patrol that will stop at each post to check in as it moves, and if so, how often do they expect it? What is the overall state of morale in the Hextorite army? Are they being well fed? Do they expect an easy victory, or are they settling in for a long siege? What is the common soldier's opinion of the spell-casting elite of the army, and do they keep to themselves, or mingle freely among the troops?
All of these questions can often be answered just from the idle chitchat and banter of common soldiers, and each answer offers a little insight into the probable tactics and strategies of the leaders. Finrod draws on his Mercenary background as he listens, putting himself in the place of the young guards. If only Validar could acknowledge the value of such experience... :)
After twenty-five or thirty minutes listening to and observing the guards, Fin carefully pulls back to the pre-arranged meeting spot, to provide Val and Cereld with input for plans based on what, if anything, he has gleaned from his scouting.

Welcome back Fin! :*
SUBJ: GM Notes
Finrod does get answers to some of his questions:
How long have they been out here? Too long! They make mention have having 5 more hours on this shift. They seem pretty cheerful, in spite of this boring duty. It doesn't appear that they have missed many meals. They seem to expect an easy victory in a week, perhaps two.
SUBJ: FINROD FROM: SGT STONEY 08/27/90 S#: 79330
Upon meeting up with Dar, Bernie, and the two leaders, Fin listens intently to what Dar found further along, then adds the info he gleaned from observing the guard post. After some thought, he offers his opinion of the best course of action.
"Cereld, Validar, I submit that these guards are unimportant to the main task at hand- namely the easing of the siege of Gateway. Let us take advantage of their relaxed demeanor to sneak around them, and get closer to the main camp. They will probably get more vigilant as the time for thier relief gets closer, so the sooner we accomplish that, the better.
"Once we have gotten past the guards here, we will be within the outer ring of their security, so there will be somewhat less danger of discovery. We can find a good hiding place and lie low until dusk.
"With the gathering darkness, we could approach the main camp, where the spellcasters, ogres, and giants seem to be concentrated. That would seem to me to be our main target. We could hit them with a quick, sharp raid, cause as much confusion and destruction as possible in a short time, then withdraw amid the confusion of the awakening camp. We can pull back, find a good place to hide a couple of hours' ride into the forest, and then hit them again tomorrow night. Tomorrow we could make our target to fire the siege engines, then do nothing for a night, just to let them worry what we're up to, then hit their supplies. This will have a cumulative erosion effect on the morale of their whole army.
"We cannot expect to defeat such a foe as this on our own, but we can certainly have an effect on them out of all proportion to our small size, if we do it right.
"I do suggest that under cover of tonight's raid, we have two of our best members sneak up to the walls of the city and try to make contact and gain admittance. Once within the city, those folk could coordinate with the people in charge within the city, so that they will know who is out here doing all this, and what our general plan of action is. In this fashion, they would be able to plan sorties from the city to coincide with our own attacks, thus multiplying the effect. Also, if the leaders within the city desire us to join the garrison within the walls, then the two we send in could once again sneak out and meet us at some pre-arranged spot to let us know what is going on.
"What say you, noble leaders: shall we provide these villains a taste of guerrilla war?"

"I must say I wholly approve of Finrod's plan. If we can avoid detection, we should be able to make a devastating raid upon the enemy encampment. The only point I would make is that we might want to try to destroy as many of the siege engines as we can on the first raid, in addition to attacking the Hexorites. I'm not as convinced as Fin is that after our first attack we'll get a second chance; knowing that we are out here will likely cause them to tighten their camp security."
SUBJ: Arocken FROM: Wildchilde 08/28/90 S#: 817164
I agree with Araduin that the siege machines should also be a focus of our attack substantially weakening the ability to attack the city.
SUBJ: FINROD (R) FROM: SGT STONEY 08/29/90 S#: 827863
"Ah, but, my friends, Siege engines may be rebuilt, while dead leaders, spellcasters, and Giants may not. Also, the death of those types creates a much greater morale effect on the lower ranks than would the mere firing of a few machines.
"Another consideration is that we do not have the strength of personnel or magic to attack in two places at once...no, I definitely feel that to attempt too much at once would be courting certain disaster.
"You may have a point about the tightening of security, but let us not forget that time is always on the side of the besieged, not on the side of the besiegers. We can wait and watch a couple of days for a good opening to present itself. We are in no hurry. And if the Hextorites should choose to send some of their number into the forest to try and hunt us down, we can lead them into an ambush and cut them down, thus defeating the enemy in detail if he is foolish enough to keep sending patrols in after us."

She nods when the new plan is laid out. "Sounds good, guys," she says condescendingly. "I'll go back and tell Validar and Cereld. Just leave it to me." She almost bounces back to the main party when out of sight of the guards. (Scurries, Mad? Bernice is offended!) ;)
Back with the main party, she'll tell the story her own way. When Cereld or Validar tell her to 'stick to the facts, she'll give them the bare bones version.
Finally she'll lead the party back to the rendezvous, sitting very straight and trying to look wise.

The Frontier #55
The Seekers have reunited and the scouts delivered their findings to the main group.
Validar suggests attacking the guards at the barricade. Finrod offers his own plan of attack. Ignoring the guards and proceed to the enemy camp. From there engage in guerilla warfare tactics to slow the army down. This plan has gain acceptance from many Seekers.

"Not to put any damper on any of the plans that are being made, but anyone approaching the city would be repelled as attackers. Remember they are under siege and the Hextorites could try a sneak attack like that. Now if we set at least one siege engine on fire, those in the city could figure out they have help out here. That way we may be able to send a message in some night and they might believe it. If we attack, send one of our great scouts; Bernice looks good to me, to torch one of the siege engines. The rest of us could attack the leaders camp as the guards rush to put out the fire and search for the culprit who did it. In the confusion, we could probably do some major damage to the giants and such."
I pause long enough to hear what the others have to say to this idea. I then continue, "As for how often we attack and when, well I am a human and can't move that quiet even in the day time. I don't even have that clanking metal armor our fighters wear. I do think we could hit every night though. Just hit a different camp each night, maybe even one twice to keep them guessing. Hitting only the leaders every time will lead to us getting caught. The solders will lose some moral because they are losing their leaders but they may think themselves safe. If we hit them also, they may decide it isn't as safe as their leaders say. This could lead to some inner squabbles within the lower ranks."

If given the time/opportunity Dar's spell list will change to the following:(1st) CLW*2, Entagnle*3 (2nd) Dust Devil, Obscurement, Produce Flame***

SUBJ: FINROD (R) FROM: SGT STONEY 09/01/90 S#: 426457
I anticipated that anyone sent to make contact with the defenders would have to convince them that they are not a sneak attack or treachery. That is why I said 'two of our best'...I would like to be sure that they can talk fast to keep themselves alive.
As to sending only one of our number to torch only one siege engine- I do not like EVER sending only one lone person into such danger. Doctrine says always send two, to watch each other's back. Also, when we attack the Leaders' camp, I plan to create enough noise and confusion that no one within the walls could doubt that an attack is going on... oh, they will know we are here, alright!
I never said that we should attack the leaders over and over... I said attack the leaders FIRST. That has the greatest most immediate effect. THEN we can hit the siege engines on the next night, and so on. If we were to attack any siege engines on the first night, it would tip our hand to the leaders of the hextorites. As long as we have not attacked them, they may hope that we are not smart enough to realize their worth. We can correct them on night #2. ::Smile::
As to hitting every single night, I think that the decision each night should be made on the basis of what we see them doing... if they are too vigilant for us to pull off a successful raid, then we wait a night, and try again. we are in no hurry, and can wait for the openings to present themselves.

SUBJ: Cereld FROM: Cereld 09/01/90 S#: 434516
"I too like Finrod's plan. The guards first should be ignored and avoided, which from what you say, should be easy. There is no need to spend the time and resources at our disposal destroying unskilled labor.
The main camp, the one with the Hextorites, which should be our goal. This would not only let our 'friends' know that we are here, it might also let those inside the city know we are back. Attacking that encampment will create an incredible amount of confusion. I think we should also take advantage of that. Bernice, if you feel up to it, I would like to give the most important job to you. While we are attacking, I would like you to try and get into Gateway. We MUST get word inside in order to coordinate any future plans of attack. Zynara is right though. You will probably be thought of as a spy at first, so you will have to do some fast-talking. This may give you some credibility though. (If Bernice agrees to the job, Cereld will hand his holy symbol to her. Also if we were given anything designating us as servants of the crown, those go to her also.) Well Validar, what do you think?"
SUBJ: Stephanie
Stephanie is silent as the talk of attacks continue.
'Whatever we do, it should be done soon. I have no problem in ignore the lackeys at the post. We are skilled warriors and slayers of dragons, amongst other things. Let us take the battle to these pig-priests! Let their warriors and giants defend them. They shall all fall before our might!!'

Regardless of what plan is adopted, Steph will do her best to follow orders. As long as she remembers them... ;)
SUBJ: VALIDAR FROM: Panther13 09/02/90 S#: 825256
"It seems that we have the beginnings of a working plan, but there are a few other things to be addressed as well."
"We can avoid the guards or not, it makes no difference to me. Their number is irrelevant. As long as a force of our number can circle the post and not hit any other, then this is acceptable."
"However, I feel I must point out one factor: this horde is also composed of goblinoids, which are increasingly active at NIGHT. Our best times for raids may be during the daylight hours when these forces tend to stay out of the sunlight."
"I do agree that the leaders are the biggest threat and should require our strongest attention. We can attack the siege engines, as a diversion during our attacks, but I feel that they are less important than the troops themselves. After all, if there is no one to operate them, they are no danger whatsoever."
"I also feel that our numbers and strength is sufficient to split our group in two, at times, and still remain safe. This way, we can cause more damage in more places. If we show that there is but one group attacking and harassing them, they may simply decide to rise up and crush us. But if they think it many groups, they may instead try simply to keep us out."
"I feel that this proposed mission for Bernice be postponed for at least a day or two. If the Hextorites have acted as I fear, the citizens of Gateway will not be accepting to anyone coming from outside. For safety reasons, this should wait. Gateway is not going anywhere and has some skilled commanders. They will know how to take advantage of our efforts, and we can make contact then."
"Finally, if this item of Zynara's is usable by all of us at once, we have no need to hide in the forests, but can hide anywhere we wish. It will also give us an advantage in this hit & run war. Perhaps we should spend some time experimenting with it to be certain."
"One last thing: the Hextorites will not be expecting an attack from without. We need to be as organized as possible and hit as many targets as possible on our first attack. It is then that we will have our greatest advantage and we must put it to the most use."
SUBJ: Cereld (R) FROM: Cereld 09/03/90 S#: 93340
After everyone has returned, and all tales are told, Cereld and Validar go into their council of war (with curious eyes from Dar and Claudius). After a? brief? discussion they return to the group. Cereld addresses all, "We have come up with a working plan. Here's how it goes. First off, it is agreed that the outpost here will be avoided. We need not waste time here if we can get around unseen and unheard.
When we arrive at Gateway, we are going to split into two teams. Group 1 will consist of Dar, Arathron, Arocken, Bernice, Finrod and Renard. This group will try and infiltrate the leader camp, our target for tonight. While they are there, they will use whatever means they have to hamper and confuse the enemy. Things like webbing tents together, flaming sphere here and there come to mind off the top of my head, but I leave the details up to you. Finrod, we would like you to try and attempt to read the Fireball spell we have in that spellbook. Aim it at the main tent of leaders. After about, what do you think 3 minutes Validar, you are to get out of there and head for the place near the woods where you left. There you are to prepare to ambush any pursuit.
Group 2, which consists of everyone not previously mentioned, will wait until 5 minutes after group 1 has left, and then start charging straight for the tent area that, hopefully, is now ablaze. There we will attempt to kill and destroy as many of the foul leaders as we can before having to retreat. We will be as loud and destructive as possible, to cover whatever group 1 is doing. Hopefully this maneuver will catch everyone by surprise. The moment they even look like they are starting to get organized, we are out of there and heading for a meeting with group 1. Then we find a good place to hide from the mob that will be after us. Zynara your wand would come in nice here, if it could take us all. Maybe we should experiment with it before the attack.
That is the basics people. Any questions, comments? Did I leave anything out Validar? Claudius I want to see you before we leave."
When Cereld and Claudius get together, Cereld hands Claudius his wand, "Here this may be of more benefit to you than me this battle. I think I will be to busy with my axe to use it. Use it for all our health."
SUBJ: Claudius FROM: CatKnight 09/03/90 S#: 833763
"Aye..", the young mage says grimly, seizing the wand in his hand, "It will be as you command."
Claudius did not have much experience in war, and so he had listened rather numbly as the leaders outlined the plan of attack. When told his role, the mage had at first objected, fearing that a member of "group 2" would be stuck defending him if things got rough. Reassured by the wand, and the truth that his own measly spells, *magic missiles* can do much, he was reassured.
Claudius went off to be alone after his talk with Cereld, and sat down to think. Looking at the sieging army, he began to scowl. "All I ever wanted..", he whispered to himself, "..was a quiet library, a good book, and the time to research what I desired. Evidently, they have other ideas.."
Seizing the wand again, he places it within his belt for easy access, having the effect of a scabbard, though lacking the safety of a "basket". When he rejoins the group, his eyes smolder, and his face is tense.
"Let's do it."

"I think I needn't remind everyone to be careful during this attack. I would like to see everyone survive a battle for once. Let us each remember to stay under control during this attack and to always watch out for your fellows' backs."
"May each of you strike strong and strike swift."

When the plan is put up, I offer no more complaints, ideas or such. When the idea of using the wand I have as a hiding place comes up, I turn to Blod with a smile. Then it is mentioned that we test it before hand to make sure all will fit. "Excuse me. I know little of magic compared to those others in our group that uses magic, but don't wands have a limit? Remember, we acquired the wand from some other nasties and I already tested it to find out what it is. I don't know how much power it has left. Wouldn't it be better to trust the gods and use it sparingly?"
If Cereld still believes we should test it, I will test it as he outlines.
When we go into battle, I will always be at Blod's side. My first spell cast will be 1 of my acid arrows at the largest living target I can hit. I will then cast my second one at another target unless I see a human. If I see an enemy human, I will cast my charm person spell then the other acid arrow. If Blod is in need of help or I get into melee, I will cast Chill Touch and teach some boxing to the enemy. :)
