The Frontier #33
Two days pass as the party heals from their confrontations with the Mountain Monster and the wench Wendy. By the end of those two days, everyone is at maximum hit points.
During one of the days, Cereld casts Know Alignment on Wendy. His reading indicates that she is of Neutral Evil bent.
Wendy remains pleasant during the two days, occasionally babbling on about this and that. By listening, you get the feeling that she doesn't know anything about the other evil fractions here in the Frontier. She was acting on her own.
The group carries out various personal tasks in preparation for the upcoming journey. In a response to the party agreeing to leave their fallen comrades equipment be, Finrod writes his 'will'.
While this is going on, several would be adventurers approach the party. Inspired by what the Seekers have accomplished in Whispering Hollow, they wish to join up with the group.
GM Notes:
Several new players will be joining up this week! Be nice to them Fin... ;)
Once you do get on your way back to Gateway, which route do you wish to take?
You can...
A. Take the same route back that you took here.
B. Backtrack until you come to the path taken by the Goblin Army and then follow their trail.
C. Or you can take the North Road until it reaches the Main Road, the road you took into the Frontier.
As far as you can tell, all three routes would probably take about the same amount of travel time. Of course, dangers encountered along the way will have something to say about that!
Also, they are six extra horses available to the group. I assume that you didn't bury them with their owners!
Spectrum's Comments: Now the Seekers get back to that path the goblin army made. They had encountered it way back in Frontier #12. Since the Seeker's roster was way down, it was time to recruit new players to the game.
SUBJ: FINROD (R) FROM: FINROD 03/30/90 S#: 109875
But Mad- I'm ALWAYS nice to the new players! Now you'll have them thinking I'm some kind of Ogre who eats young characters for snacks! ];)
********
"Well, brave companions, I for one am all in favor of accepting the petition of these youngsters for membership in The Seekers... at least conditional on how they perform in the first couple of weeks."
"Well met, little ones! May you bring us fortune on our trail!"
::Touch of Irony in the voice, since most of these 'little ones' are probably much bigger than Fin.:: :)
"Seekers; I propose that we choose the route which follows the trail of the Goblin army toward Gateway... well-mounted as we are, we can no doubt overtake them in a couple of days if we push it. Then we can, if we can remain undetected, harry their support trains no little as we progress toward Gateway, thus slowing their advance, and forcing their leader to commit more of his combat troops to guarding the trains. This will, in turn, weaken the vanguard, which we can gallop a couple of miles wide of and get around in front to ambush them, and do a little more morale damage. Then we can gallop like the wind to bring the news to Gateway. With any luck, the blows we strike to their organization and morale along the way can combine with a powerful sortie of troops and spell-casters from Gateway to wreak destruction, and break the advance well in advance of any chance of their setting up a siege. For once they are in place as besiegers, it will be much tougher to do them harm."
"Thus, to summarize, I advocate:
1) Follow the Goblin Army
2) Upon reaching their trains, conduct raids (hit and run only) enough to force a redeployment of combat troops.
3) Galloping around to set an ambush for their vanguard, again refusing decisive engagement, only harrying
4) Dashing on ahead to Gateway to warn the residents and urge the mounting of an expedition to break the Goblin advance well short of the City."
"There is, of course, plan B, which is whatever anyone else can come up with. You will forgive me if I get excited, but this sort of Campaigning is what I entered the Mercen... er... Adventuring trade for, in the first place."
Finrod looks about at his companions with a small smile.
"Steph- you are a warrior born and trained: does not this course of action appeal to you? And Cereld, Friend, Cleric of a God of War- Cannot you, too, see a certain glorious elation in such a plan?"
SUBJ: Araduin FROM: Deslock 03/30/90 S#: 12099
I give Finrod a sidelong glance.
"While we're at it why don't we simply annihilate the entire goblin army?"
I attempt to stifle my smile as I continue.
"Your plans are bold indeed, Finrod. Although they would not have been my first thoughts on the matter, your ideas have merit. And if we are to embark on so bold a course of action, then if would seem wise to increase our ranks. What say you, Cereld?"
SUBJ: Arathron FROM: RAD DWEEBE 03/31/90 S#: 87472
Arathron will walk around and talk to the new members of the party, and try to get acquainted with them.
Being the quiet type, he will just do what he's told.

A large man wearing chain mail and carrying a 2-handed sword on his back approaches you and says, "Me Blod. Me like to fight! Me wanna join with heroes!"
Spectrum's Comments: Meet Blod. He was the prototypical big, dumb, and strong fighter. He was even more intellectually challenged than Stephanie. Some of his characters comments were quite humorous.
SUBJ: eagle (R) FROM: Perpbuster 03/31/90 S#: 81801
I approach the party and introduce myself as eagle, a follower of Heironeous.
"If you have any room I wood like to accompany you and fight by your side. Your fame has reached me and I think we fight for the same cause." With that said I await a response from the members.
Description: A human male wearing splint mail, carrying a mace and his holy symbol in front of his chest.

SUBJ: "Boy oh Boy"... (R) FROM: Modesty1 04/01/90 S#: 33400
'I just gotta thank you for the opportunity of traveling with you adventurers. This is gonna be soooo fun. Name's Bernice, but everybody back home calls me Bernie.' gushes the small furry footed halfling as she approaches each character and earnestly shakes their hand.
She is dressed in a pretty average looking gray cloak, fastened with an almost gaudy brooch. In rare quiet moments she fondles it. A lute is strapped to her back, and a short sword is visible in a scabbard at her side.
"Thought I'd go out and see the world before settling down. So many things to do, places to see....", her voice wanders and her eyes gaze a bit, but she quickly recovers. "Great Uncle Bernie (I was named after him.) Taught me a bit of thieving skills 'fore I left home...Thieving such a crude word for one of the more noble professions. You folks talking about a battle? Now, Uncle Bernie, boy did he have some stories. One night, we were all huddled around the hearth and he said....' and she rattles on and on and on....'
Oh so happy to join you,
Bernice
(but friends call me Bernie)
Spectrum's Comments: This is Bernice, whom Muskateer & myself have spoken of on the forum. She's probably the most beloved character to have appeared in this game. Her interaction with the other players was priceless at times!
SUBJ: Araduin FROM: Deslock 04/01/90 S#: 514316
A smile crosses my face as I am approached by the bubbly Halfling. As I shake her hand, I'll greet her in her own tongue.
"Well met, Bernie. You're presence will surely enliven our group."
SUBJ: Stephanie
'Hail and well met, new Seekers!'
This comes from a large, powerfully built young woman. Steph has black eyes and long black hair. Standing over 6' tall, she is an imposing figure. Thigh high black boots cover her legs. She wears chain mail over a scarlet red blouse.
'It appears my concern of having a smaller party for the return trip is unfounded. Your plan sounds good to me, Fin, but tactics of battle are not well known to me. Let's let Cereld decide on that.'
As they newcomers are introducer I'll briefly chat with each of them.
'Well met, Blod, may we have may great battles ahead!'
'Hail, Eagle, another priest of Heironeous is always welcome. Our leader, Cereld, is of your brethren.'
When it comes to the perky halfling, Bernice, I find that I must agree with the mage.
'Yes, she will no doubt lighten spirits within our band. Many grim things have happened of late... We could use it! Welcome to the Seekers, Bernice!'
'Better watch out Fin! Looks like you got some competition in the 'acquiring' field.'
Steph will greet the other newcomers in a similar fashion. She is eager to begin the trip back to Gateway.

I've heard much tell of the SEEKERS exploits, and i to would like to offer my services against this foul horde of able the goblins have assembled!
Spectrum's Comments: Another new player. What is it with first level characters wanting to call themselves demonslayer?
SUBJ: Kaan (R) FROM: Xent6 04/02/90 S#: 490336
While you are talking a young fellow with leather armor and an old long sword runs along. He is blond and seems very young (16-17). He looks at you for a second, wondering how to introduce himself. Then he pulls out a flute and starts to play a little song. As soon as he has your attention, he bows and introduces himself as Kaan. " I was employed in the local inn. Totally boring. I want to go on adventures. This is the sword of my dad, I have practiced with it a lot." :)
He bows again.
You just met Kaan, the Bard. ;)
Spectrum's Comments: Yet another new player.
SUBJ: Dar Thaltus.... FROM: Kazaroth 04/02/90 S#: 505342
Turns to face each new member of the Seekers. "Well met fellow adventurers! You are a welcome sight.....we've a need for some new faces."
Dar smiles upon seeing the halfling as his hand reaches towards his money reflexively.
"A cheerful addition indeed I certainly hope that you will remain with us for the duration."
As to the course of action Dar will relapse into his normally quiet self, awaiting the decision of the others. As has been the case Dar once more will volunteer to act as point for the group. Noticed by anyone paying attention is the small smile that plays across Dar's face at the mention of any plans to engage in combat with goblinoid types.
****************************************
For the new members a brief description:
Dar Thaltus is an elf of average (5'2")ht and (101#) wt. His amber eyes take in every detail at a glance....and you notice that his eyes are always in motion. His golden blonde hair is close cropped, rather unusual for an elf.
At his side a longsword hangs, a green hue emanates from it and etchings can been seen near the hilt. He also carries a spear, longbow and arrows, and wears a suit of studded leather armor that has seen much action. Around his neck swings a small silver unicorn horn.....the symbol of Ehlonna, goddess of Rangers.
Greetings to all newcomers! Good luck and good adventures!!
SUBJ: Rathin o'picklock FROM: Sir Derek 04/03/90 S#: 465274
While the new members are being introduced, a figure emerges from the shadows....The figure resembles a human Greetings fellow seekers! I am Rathin O'Piclock.....I'm sure you can tell what my profession is by my name! As the rest of the party looks over him they see that he is indeed human. He is wearing a flat black suit of leather armor. The companions see a long sword strapped to his back, but in a beautiful jewel encrusted scabbard. An item someone was nice enough to "give" me remarks Rathin.
He is 6'0 tall 150 lbs...He has blackish brown hair and cold steel blue eyes. He also carries a shield strapped to his arm, and two exquisitely made throwing daggers in each boot. More "gifts" he remarks slyly...;)
Spectrum's Comments: You guessed it! Another new player!
The Frontier #34
At last, the Seekers depart Whispering Hollow. Several of the inhabitants have joined their ranks, swelling the Seekers to over a dozen in number. Several new adventurers arrive at virtually, the last second.
The trip to the trail made by the goblins takes two days. The group arrives in late afternoon. No hazards are encountered along the way.
The goblin trial is a wide track of trampled forest made by the passing of the goblin army a few weeks back. The Seekers encountered this trial en route to Whispering Hollow.
Suddenly, everyone's attention is attracted to screeching coming from the sky. A pride of griffons are circling overhead. Having smelled to party's mounts, they are preparing to attack in a feeding frenzy....
GM Notes:
You'll have 1 round to prepare for the incoming Griffons.
I need the spells lists for Eagle and Demonslayer ASAP!
Fin, what kind of arrangements are you going to have in taking Wendy back to Gateway?
I'm assuming that you're having guards during the night. I would appreciate if you could tell what kind of rotation you have.
With all the new players, here is an updated party listing. A couple of the new players did not make the post deadline and are included below. I don't know the name of Kid Texas' character yet.

House Rules:
The following are rules and variations in use in this game:
Encumbrance is used.
I do NOT require Spell Components
I use individual initiative rolls for the Seekers and Group Initiative for like groups of monsters. Weapon speed figures into to Initiative and Magical Weapons reduce Weapon Speed.
I use the Exceeding Level Limits option on Demi-Humans.
Mages do not automatically gain new spells when they gain a level. There should be enough spells on hand, from captured spell books and scrolls, to get a descent selection.
Characters advance and train on the 'Advance now, Train Later' method. The Crown supplies free training to the Seekers back in Gateway. I allow characters to advance in levels automatically, but they still must make up the training at a later date. Training takes 1 week per level gained. Thus, once the party is safely back in Gateway, some players will have to spend as many as four weeks in make-up training. New players won't really be affected by this, since they can be trained by the older players of the same class.
Hovering at Death's door is used.
Weapon breakage: In my off-line game, we devised an easy system to check for weapon breakage. Without really thinking about it, I've used it in this game. Whenever a natural 1 is rolled on an attack roll, I immediately re-roll the dice. If a 2nd 1 comes up, the weapon in question has broken. This does not occur very often, but just enough to add spice to the game. It also seems to always happen at the wrong time...
And lastly about magic items. Wands, Staffs and Rods all require command words. More often then not, they words are written on the object, but Read Magic is needed to comprehend them. Magical swords DO NOT emit light.
Also, I do not label magic items. That is, if you find some magic items, I do not reveal exactly what they are up front. 'The sword is magical, the chain is magical, etc.' No pluses are ever given. My feeling is that the player really has no way of knowing which sword is +1 and which is +2. They can determine which is stronger, but no pluses will be given. The nature of other items can eventually be determined. For example, Araduin has a Ring of Protection. Of course he doesn't know what the plus is! When the nature of an item is determined, I usually tell what the item is. Like in the example above.
Spectrum's Comments: In hindsight, some of my house rules changed over the years, even during the time on Q! The weapon breakage rule dates back to Muskateer and mine live games in the days before Q. Still use it to this very day!
SUBJ: Blod FROM: Begal 04/05/90 S#: 84095
Staring appreciatively at Stephanie, Blod is heard to mutter," Me gonna like fighting with these heroes! Yes, Me gonna *LIKE* it!"
Spectrum's Comments: It's funny, but I never noticed Blod's interest in Stephanie before! Her thoughts of romance were directed towards another character anyway.
SUBJ: Arathron FROM: RAD DWEEBE 04/05/90 S#: 62057
Arathron will ready his Bow, and fire at the hovering griffons, then draw his sword, and wait till they attack.
SUBJ: Kamreill (R) FROM: Kid Texas 04/06/90 S#: 424253
^name of char. Well, I suppose that I'll ready my battle-axe and attack whenever possible.
Spectrum's Comments: This was that paladin who thought he was a ranger mentioned in the forum during the discussions about Raeden. In hindsight, he seemed to play his character for laughs, which didn't fit particularly well since this was a fairly serious game. What humor there was came about from character interaction and the situation, not slapstick.
SUBJ: Aarghhh! (R) FROM: Xent6 04/06/90 S#: 416297
Kaan will try to duck any attacking Griffons. He jumps off his newly bought mule and holds it tight. If he can he will try to hold any other mount near him.
SUBJ: FINROD (R) FROM: FINROD 04/06/90 S#: 99619
Before leaving town, arrangements will be made for traveling with Wendy. She will be bound gently but firmly at the wrists. I will carefully explain that her 'sickness' causes her to have 'fits', and that we do not wish her to hurt herself. Because of these 'fits', she cannot ride alone, she might fall off... she will have to ride in front of Fin. (Sorry, Steph, it's the best I could come up with.) We are both pretty light, and carry little equipment outside of the chest, so the horse should have little difficulty in carrying us.
When the griffins circle to begin their attack, Wendy and I will dismount, and Wendy will be told to hold and calm the horse while I defend the three of us. This should take up most of that initial round.
While all this is going on, I shall be looking for two trees, at about the proper distance apart to anchor a WEB spell. When the Creatures swoop to attack, I shall attempt to foul as many as possible in my WEB. This should (I hope) bring one or more to the ground, and befoul their wings enough to keep them there. I have no illusions that they will be stuck IN the web for more than a round or two, but once on their wings, it should keep them from taking off for quite a while. On round two, I plan; if possible to use COLOR SPRAY to further discomfit the closest one or two of the beasts, then will wade in to hand-to-talon combat with them, using shortsword and dagger.
"DAMN the loss of my bow--I hate not being able to attack at a distance and at these beasts while they are flying! I can only hope I can succeed in bringing a couple down where I can de-claw them, and keep them there!"
"Keep that Gelding quiet, now Wendy! It's an important job, and he'll be wanting to break and run from these things!"

Welcome to the Party, Newcomers! I am Finrod, and I provide the baser side of of our group with inspirational leadership. I am a charming elf of average build and height, with blue eyes and blond hair, dressed in black garments of fine make when you first meet me in town. Later, when we are ready for the road, I am dressed in fine quality studded leather armor, but whenever the threat factor is low, I prefer to go (apparently) unarmored, though always armed. I keep the party's captured spell-books safe in a locked chest of fine manufacture, but anytime you Magic-using sorts desire to copy a spell, let me know. We have an 'open book policy' here, and fully share our books with each other. If any of you fledgling fighters need training, I'm glad to help, but Steph is better. But don't get any Ideas--She's way to rough for any of you. :)
SUBJ: Blod (R) FROM: Begal 04/06/90 S#: 86267
"Yay!! A Fight!!!" Blod will draw forth his mighty 2-handed sword and prepare for combat. He will stay mounted.

SUBJ: Eagle FROM: Perpbuster 04/06/90 S#: 479238
Seeing the Griffons circling around overhead, Eagle removes his mace and get ready for their attack. If one of the griffons lands on the ground I will cast an entangle spell on it, Hoping to keep, it from taking off again. If anyone falls during the battle I will rush to their side and CLW on them

SUBJ: Before the griffons... FROM: Modesty1 04/07/90 S#: 35700
Bernice follows Araduin around pestering him with questions. 'How did you guys get the name Seekers? Funny name Seekers. what are you Seeking? You've run into these goblins before? Nasty bunch, huh? Where's this army from? Who are they fighting? Where is this Gateway? Big town, huh? Always wanted to see a city? Is it a CITY? Boy, all those stores...and rich people just walking the streets, ummmm.' After a pause 'Ha ha ha, just kidding.' and she smiles a big smile showing several crooked teeth.
When she sees the Griffons, Bernice will let out a short scream and then clamp her hand over her mouth. Muttering to herself, 'Gosh they're big and pretty scarey too! Be brave...be brave.' She tumbles off her horse and runs to the nearest cover. From there she'll attempt to stop shaking and use her sling.
Trembling in the shadows,

Good job Bernice. What are you seeking, and what are those goblins doing.....
SUBJ: Stephanie
'You misunderstood what I spoke of early, Dar. I wish to near the head of the party, not to lead it on the return trip. Your superior skills leave no doubt who shall lead us on this journey. I merely wished to near the front so that I could quickly engage an enemy who dared to attack us.'
I'm somewhat amused at Fin's handling of the foul mage.
'I'm beginning to suspect that you have feelings towards the wench, Fin. The way you look after her and ride with her and all. She is a devious one, more devious then you... Yes, that is the root of all this isn't it! Why, Fin, I believe you might have found the perfect woman!' :)
'I may be rough, Fin... Perhaps too rough even for you. Is that correct, little friend?'
With a huge smile on her face, Steph draws up to her full height, standing almost a full foot over Finrod.
When the 'big turkeys' attack, looks like you shall fit in quite well, friend Blod, I shall guide Thunder to a place of safety. No overgrown bird is going to eat my horse!
'Be gone foul creatures! Les you taste the bit of Lightning!'
Drawing my magic sword, I'll attack the nearest monster.
Spectrum's Comments: That was a nice zinger Steph got in on Fin. And, no, she couldn't let the big turkey remark pass without comment.
SUBJ: Araduin (R) FROM: Deslock 04/09/90 S#: 53537
"Really, Bernice, we must do something about your shyness... As to our name, well, when we find it, we'll know. But really, I think each of us here seeks something, otherwise we would not be here. I personally seek knowledge, and to do what good I can with the knowledge I gain. Those vermin goblins we follow are controlled by the evil religion, whose local control we have only just broken. We have met them before, or at least some of their ilk. They took one of our party captive, and we have not seen him since. There is a large band on it's way to Gateway, and if they should surprise that outpost, then they may well overthrow it and break out into the lands beyond, for Gateway, as it's name implies, guards the passage between the peaceful lands beyond, and the remains of the evil which used to rule the lands in which we now travel."
When the griffons are spotted, I'll throw my Magic Missile at the nearest, and then ready my quarterstaff. I shall remain mounted, and defend my mount as best I can from the winged beasts.
Araduin is an averaged sized, attractive Elven male. His clothes are normal fare, all in greens and browns. A headband holds his long raven hair back from his green eyes. He travels lightly, the quarterstaff his only apparent weapon, the rest of his gear sitting into his backpack.
SUBJ: Cereld FROM: Lanceson 04/09/90 S#: 412450
"Welcome new Seekers, my name is Cereld, cleric of Heironeous, and leader of this band. (Sorry I could not great you last post, but time just ran out on me.) You are all more than welcome to join us in our adventures. Eagle, it is a pleasure to have someone else in our band who teaches the ways of our just lord, Heironeous. Perhaps later we could get together and discuss the blessings that he has bestowed on each of us. Bernie, your sense of humor is most welcome in this party, especially now. We have had many a tragedy lately, and have lost a few of our friends, and your cheery spirit is a well-needed relief. As is also your music, Kaan. I look forward to a time when you can play for us. Blod, Demonslayer, Telinos your fighting arms are more than needed especially in the times that quickly approach us with the upcoming battle with the goblins and a special mission that we have next summer. Rathin, I expect that you will add that extra bit of stealth that any well-balanced band of adventures could use. And last but not least Kamreill. I welcome your guidance and wisdom in the coming journeys. May our new found alliance be full of adventure and reward, and serve the greater good of Heironeous."
A brief description of Cereld is that of a somewhat plump (not overweight, but could easily get there) human male who is about 5'7" tall, with black hair and a white complexion. He is wearing plate armor to which he proudly displays the holy symbol of Heironeous on the outside. He carries an impressive looking battle-axe which also bears this symbol. When Cereld talks he usually speaks rather loud, almost on the verge of shouting, and even if he is reminded of this, he will quiet down for a few seconds and then his excitement will get the best of him. Cereld is a very jovial man, who is very good tempered and humored, but he also is very passionate about the things he believes in. When we spot the griffons preparing to descend upon us, Cereld raises his Battle Axe in the air. "Heironeous hear the plea of your humble servant and grant your blessing on this band that is about to fight against that oncoming beasts. Ready Seekers, at them foul flying beasts. Drive them quickly off so we can continue on our quest."
Last thing is that I think I should set some sort of guard for when we sleep. Each shift will be for two hours each.
1st - Arathron, Eagle, Kaan
2nd - Araduin, Bernie, Kamreill
3rd - Cereld, Demonslayer
4th - Rathin, Stephanie, Dar
5th - Blod, Finrod, Telinos
If anyone would like to change shifts for whatever reason, just let me know. Also I will warn everyone anytime we set up camp for the night. Every night I will cast Wyvern Watch on the area, so do not leave it for any reason.

If things go very badly for the party in the opening rounds of combat Dar will resort to using his Obscurement spell to lay a covering haze over the largest group of needy members.
Spectrum's Comments: Next time out the combat with the griffon's and the return of Validar! Wait a minute... Wasn't he dead?
