The Frontier # 28 - 30

Spectrum's Comments: The Seekers are on the trail of Wendy once more. They are arriving at Akbar's tower to search for her.

The Frontier #28

Cautiously, Cereld, Finrod, Finius, Stephanie, Araduin, Dantar, Dalliance and Arafel enter the tower. The building creaks and moans as they enter, but what remains seems to be sturdy enough. As you travel along, it becomes apparent that the tower has taken some fire damage. Most of the damage appears to have been made by the creature.

The first floor of the tower is totally in ruins. All the rooms have been previously searched and trashed. Nothing remains intact. Ceilings have collapsed in several areas.

Only the thieves have the skills to explore the second floor of the tower. Again, not much remains.

Having nowhere else to turn, the explorers proceed down stairs into the basement of the tower.

The basement is in better shape than the tower above it, but not much better. The whole basement is a mage's workroom. Workbenches and bookcases fill the room.

Almost all of been destroyed. The bookcases have been ransacked. Most of the books burned by indication of a large pile of ashes in the far corner of the room. Broken glass from smashed beakers covers the floor.

There are footprints down here. Arafel believes them to be Wendy's. A few scraps of paper are found. They appear to be torn pages from a diary. They read:

'...uncontrollable. To late I realize my folly. My creation nearly destroyed me. I must stop it.'

'A truly great prize... If the process works. All indications that it will...'

'I have assembled almost all the parts. Only the giant remains.'

'Power is in my grasp. The creature shall serve me well. Woe to those who oppose me...'

Nothing else of interest is found.

Having searched the tower, the Seekers continue on the trail of the Mountain Monster. Approximately one hour later, the trail leads into a abandoned mine. Many tracks are around, including those of Wendy. The fresh tracks all lead into the mine.

GM Notes:

Are you ready to enter the lair of the Mountain Monster? What is the Mountain Monster? Heh-heh...

Cereld, the following occurs when you grasp the battleaxe:

Suddenly, a vision appears before. You can see a mighty warrior bathed in a wondrous light before you. It is to bright to clearly see him.

'Hail, my son. Use this tool to further the Cause. This tool shall increase your might when in battle against the Foe. When raised to the sky and my prayer is recited, thy comrades shall receive my blessing. Use this tool wisely, my son.'

The vision then fades. In your mind you know that the Blessing spoken of can be done 3 times a day. In addition, half of your valuables need to be tithed to remain in possession of this tool.

SUBJ: Validar FROM: Panther13 02/24/90 S#: 819929

Outside with Dar:

"My uncle had a weapon similar to that one, Dar. I learned that sometimes enchanted blades will give a clue to their powers through various engravings or markings on the blade. My uncle's blade was similar but the color was different. I was very young before that blade was destroyed, but I will never forget the sapphire-like shine to its blade. It was destroyed in killing the dragon, Azure. Mayhap you also have a dragon-slayer!"

SUBJ: Stephanie

'I don't like the sound of those pages... What did he do here?'

Steph looks around, searching for an answer but none appears.

Later, at mine opening.

'It appears the answers to our questions lie within... Shall we proceed?'

SUBJ: Dantar FROM: Falcon9 02/25/90 S#: 395179

I don't like the idea of chasing some 'mountain monster' into his home ground. I feel like this is very bad and we should try to get the 'monster' out here on our terms! Say sending a few of you down there to lure it out and then spring a trap to bring it down?

Send the fighters in after it and when it comes out have the thieves (including me) backstab it and the M-Us and clerics blast it from a safe distance and let the fighters finish hacking it to bits!

A nice plan I would say!

SUBJ: Araduin FROM: Deslock 02/26/90 S#: 792958

"It may not be necessary to place such a grave danger upon the warriors. If we merely wait in ambush, I'd say we had a good chance of encountering the beast. That way, in addition to the backstabbing and spells, those fighters who are skilled at such will have the opportunity to use missile weapons against it. Also, should Wendy emerge, we will have the chance to capture her and find out her part in this matter."

SUBJ: Plans. (R) FROM: FINROD 02/27/90 S#: 811348

I think any plan to have a thief try to backstab a creature of unknown body type, structure and origin, is doomed from the start to result in some dead thieves. They would serve much better in case of armed conflict with this vile creation as missileers and as hand-to-hand men, or, in the case of some of us, as spell-casters.

The plan to send fighters clanking in there to draw it out is likewise more likely to produce high-protein food for the monster than the desired results.

Perhaps the best I have heard so far is just to wait out here until it comes out. That, however presumes that:

1) There is no other way in or out through which the creature might move at will while we sat here for days watching an empty hole.

2) Wendy is guilty of whatever nebulous charge we might feel she deserves, and should be left in there to fend for herself.

3) Wendy is incapable of controlling the beast herself, and using precious time while we sit here, and she learns the fine points of bending it to her whims.

I do not like the paths both explored and unexplored that those assumptions lead us down. Therefore, here is my suggested improvement to the plan:

We lay here in ambush in case the creature, Wendy, or both emerge. We send a small party of thieves in to explore, gather info, RETURN, and REPORT, so that we can then make an informed decision on what to do further. This seems to cover all the bases as safely and thoroughly as possible.

What say you all? Shall we do it?

SUBJ: Arathron FROM: RAD DWEEBE 02/27/90 S#: 409500

I greatly agree with Finrod's plan. It seems to be the most likely to work. so far.

This Wendy must not be liked, eh?

SUBJ: Dar Thaltus.... FROM: Kazaroth 02/28/90 S#: 43327

eyes widen at Val's comment. "A dragon slayer eh?! My that would be a prize indeed!!" Dar will continue scrutinizing the blade while awaiting the return of the rest of the party. He will pay particular attention to any markings or runes around the base of the blade....especially near the hilt and quillons.

Occasionally Dar will pause and glance in the direction the other group took....wondering how much success they are having in their endeavor. He feels a bit left out....knowing his scouting skills could be put to better use than sitting around staring at his new blade...........

SUBJ: Cereld FROM: Lanceson 03/01/90 S#: 431527

"Finrod your plan is well thought out and quite sound. I too am a little wary of going charging into this situation without knowing a little more information. There are too many variables here. What exactly is this mountain monster? I think it is safe to reason that it was created in the tower, but we still have no idea what we are fighting. And how exactly does Wendy fit into all of this. I am beginning to agree more and more with Validar about Wendy's guilt in misleading us. It seems quite obvious that she entered this mine willingly and not as some prisoner. No I think it for the best if we wait out here in ambush while our stealthier side tries to gain us a little more information. This way when they return, we will know better how to proceed in this matter."

The Frontier #29

Deciding to send scouts into the mine, Finrod, Finius, Dantar and Dar Thaltus cautiously enter. It is easy for Dar to follow the creatures' tracks in the torchlight.

The shaft leads further back into the mine. After 60', the tunnel turns towards the left.

A few dozen feet after that, a passage appears leading to the right. The most recent tracks appear to continue on.

Shortly after that, the explorers come to a four-way intersection. There is a great deal of tracks in this area.

Wendy's tracks are also present. The freshest tracks of either Wendy or the Monster lead into the left hand passage.

After 30 feet, the explorers enter a cavern. Old mining equipment fills the room. Most of it has been smashed. Another passage leads away from this cave.

Noise can be heard down the passage. Suddenly, a good-sized rock is hurtled out of the tunnel!

It strikes Finius in the chest, driving him to the cave floor. There is what sounds like a reptilian hiss and moving feet. At the edge of the torchlight, a large figure can be seen coming closer...

GM Notes:

The Monster is not fast moving. You could probably out run it.

The others at the entrance of the cave heard the hiss of the creature, but nothing else.

Finius is 0 of 6 in HP's.

Now what explorers?

SUBJ: Oh, Heck! FROM: FINROD 03/01/90 S#: 834738

"Dantar! Dar Thaltus! Quickly, Grab Finius and get him out of here! I'll slow down the pursuit, but we must make sure we all get out alive!"

::Finrod readies his COLOR SPRAY spell::

"Don't worry about me, I don't plan any heroic last stands, I'm just gonna get a look at this thing, blind it, and run. I'll be right on your heels before you get outside. No dead heroes here! But go, quickly!"

SUBJ: Dantar (R) FROM: Falcon9 03/02/90 S#: 412381

Run like the wind!

SUBJ: Arathron FROM: RAD DWEEBE 03/02/90 S#: 840324

Arathron, being chilled by the cold hiss of the creature will wait for the scouts to get out, then get back against the right side of the cave entrance ready to backstab the creature when it comes out, or just attack it straight on if it is not possible to backstab.

SUBJ: Stephanie FROM: Schar 03/03/90 S#: 453190

Upon hearing the cry of the creature, Steph draws her sword.

'The beast is near! We must go aid the others!'

Steph will then rush into the mines, unless held back.

'But, I must go in there! My friends are in there! Fin is in there!'

If allowed into the mine, I'll seek out the source of the noise and engage it.

Spectrum's Comments: Looks like Steph is starting to get some feelings towards Fin too.

SUBJ: Araduin FROM: Deslock 03/03/90 S#: 793904

"Stephanie, little will be gained by rushing in there. The creature will be in its element, while our ability to attack it will be limited. We should wait here for it to emerge, then all of us may assault the beast."

Should the beast come forth, I shall color spray it, and then draw forth my quarterstaff. I'll leave the fighting to those more qualified, unless there is room, or they start to fall.

SUBJ: Dar Thaltus..... FROM: Kazaroth 03/04/90 S#: 394418

scoops up his fallen comrade and shoots a look at Fin....."Take Care and be swift in your escape!"

Dar will call to the cowardly Dantar to slow his pace and aid in carrying our friend from the cave. Regardless of Dantar's assistance or lack thereof Dar will retreat as quickly as possible and once outside will quickly cast a CLW on Fin.

Dar will then tell everyone to clear a space for the other Fin as he should be right behind. Also this space will serve as the area of effect for an ENTANGLE spell to be cast at the creature if/when he/she/it appears. Dar will make sure EVERYONE is aware of the spells entangling effect, its area of effect and the fact that this spell DOES NOT DISTINGUISH between friend and foe. If this tactic succeeds then Dar will place shaft to bowstring and proceed to rain feathery death upon the foul beast. If the spell doesn't affect it then Dar will draw his new magical blade and swing at the beast giving no quarter nor expecting any.

Post Continued:

Dar scoops up Finius and rushes out of the cavern.

Finrod cast Color Spray at the approaching monster. The beasts' features are briefly illuminated by the power of the spell. It is not a pleasant sight.

The creature resembles nothing he has ever seen. Its legs seem unnaturally short and are furry. Its torso is incredibly huge. It's right limb ends in a pincer. It has a reptilian head. The monster slows for a moment due to the effect of the spell.

Turning, Finrod runs for safety. Moments later, he emerges from the mine.

The creature is following, but is very slow. It will take several minutes to reach your position...

SUBJ: Back into the sunlight... FROM: FINROD 03/04/90 S#: 6308

Rushing back into the sunlight behind his companions, Finrod shouts, "Here it comes! It's a conjured or created creature, and no mistake. It's got one crab-claw that looks as if it'd take off your head if you don't stay clear! One good thing: it seems slow, so we have a couple of minutes to prepare, I'd reckon."

Finrod draws his sword and dagger, and takes a place beside Stephanie to take part in the ambush. If he becomes severely wounded in the fighting, he will attempt to disengage and begin feathering the creature with arrows, otherwise he will melee relentlessly against this abomination. Should Steph fall, or become seriously wounded, getting her safely away and bandaged will become the highest priority.

SUBJ: Stephanie

Great relief comes over me as I see Finrod emerge from the mine.

'I was so worried!'

After hearing the description of this beast, Steph again draws her sword.

'I do not understand what you mean by conjured or created, Fin. It is a monster isn't it? Sounds like a nasty one to me!'

Once the battle begins, and the spells are cast, I'll rush the beast. Counting on the magic of my armor to protect me and the power of Lightning to fell this beast.'

SUBJ: Dar Thaltus...... FROM: Kazaroth 03/05/90 S#: 798948

seeing that he has time before the creature will appear once more reminds everyone of his spell's effects.

"I suggest that we encircle the area just outside of the ENTANGLE spell and wait to see what if any effect it has on the creature. During this time we should attack with missile weapons. From Finrod's description the ENTANGLE spell will probably only hold it for a short time at best...perhaps only slowing it a bit more. Once it has moved out of the spell area then we can all concentrate our melee attacks against the beast, preferably from all directions at once. This should serve to distract it enough to minimize both its offensive and defensive capabilities. MOST importantly.....REMEMBER the spell area!!! I'd hate for anyone to become a victim of this mindless spell as it could take anyone out if they aren't careful."

Dar will then reach down and pick up three pebbles and cast MAGIC STONE upon them if time permits. Dar will throw them at the foul denizen of Darkness after casting the aforementioned ENTANGLE spell. If the creature is still held motionless by the ENTANGLE spell then Dar will ply his longbow to the best of his ability. As soon as it becomes necessary Dar will wield his enchanted blade and engage in melee with the monster.... making certain that he avoids the ENTANGLED area.

The Frontier #30

The Seekers preparations complete, they await the Mountain Monster to exit from the mine. Minutes slowly drag pass, until the creature finally shows itself!

In full light, the creature is even more hideous then Finrod could describe.

The beast is 12 feet tall. It can now be seen that the various body parts have been sewn together!

The legs can only be that of a bugbear. The torso is that of some giant. The left arm belonged to an ogre. The original owner of the left limb is unknown. It is crab-like, ending in a large pincer. The head is that of a lizard man.

The monster rushes to that attack.

Dar's Entangle spell goes off, but does little to hinder the monster. There is not enough vegetation in the area near the mine opening to hold the beast.

Araduin hits the beast with a Color Spray, but it does not stop the monster.

Finius attempts to sneak in and backstab. However, he unwittingly enters the Entangle effect and is grabbed by the foliage. Firmly held, the monster whirls, slapping him with its pincer. The sound of bones breaking can be easily heard. The archers fire shaft after shaft into the beast, but they do little to slow it down.

Finally, it is out of the area of effect and everyone attacks.

Validar slices into the beast with his sword. Dalliance casts a Magic Missile, further wounding the monster. Dar throws one of his Magic Stones, but it sails over the beasts' head. Finrod slides in and swings at the pincer. There is a metallic snapping sound as his longsword shatters upon contact.

The monster returns the favor. The pincer grabs onto Finrod's arm. The flaying ogre arm smacks Cereld.

With renewed vigor, the Seekers continue to attack. Stephanie, Arafel, Dar, Validar and Finrod all land sword thrusts to the beast.

Finally, it begins to weaken. It pincer latches onto Dar, but he frees himself with little damage.

Arathron, Cereld and Arafel all connect again in rapid succession. Stephanie finishes the issue with two powerful swings. With a reptilian hiss, the Mountain Monster falls to the Seekers.

Before you have time to recover, fire explodes around almost all of the party. Those who are still up are drawn to a shrieking voice.

'You fools! Do you have the slightest concept what you have done?!?!'

Turning, you can see Wendy just inside the mineshaft....

Yes, I'm doing some house cleaning!

Okay, the due to the effects of the Fireball many items were destroyed. The following is a list of items that each of you STILL have. The following is only the active PC's. You can all assume that you have clothing! ;)

Araduin - Quarterstaff, Magic Ring, 3 Belt Pouches, Spellbook

Arathron - Magic Longsword, Chain Mail, Magic Shield

Cereld - Magic Battleaxe, Magic Plate Mail, Shield, Holy Symbol, Wand of Fear

Dar Thaltus - Magic Longsword, Studded Leather Armor, 50' Rope, Holy Symbol

Finrod - Magic Shortsword, Dagger, Spellbook, Magic Studded Leather, Magic Broach, Thieves Tools, Chest of Security (All items in the chest are also safe!)

Stephanie - Magic Longsword, Dagger, Longbow, Magic Chain Mail, Magic Shield, Large Belt Pouch, Platinum Bracelet.

All the parties' mounts are safe, as is their equipment.

Strangely enough, Cereld didn't take any damage from the Fireball.

For those of you who are curious, the Mountain Monster is a Monstrous Golem. A Flesh Golem made out of monster body parts!

Now what are you going to do about Wendy?

Spectrum's Comments: Basically I was doing D&D version Frankenstein here with the Monster Golem. At last the Seekers come face to face with Wendy, and the results are NOT pleasant! Muskateer was gone from Q once more and so was Validar. So the number of players was rapidly dwindling down to a mere 6.

SUBJ: Cereld FROM: Lanceson 03/08/90 S#: 821155

"Everyone, curve your tempers and remember the spell that is in effect in front of the cave opening. Scatter so she may not get us all with the same spell."

"Foul witch, we bring you here and this is how you repay us. It is bad enough we were lied to. You will pay for this act of treachery and deceit. Now look into the eyes of your judge, noble Heironeous, and cower in fear. Perhaps, then, he will show you more mercy than you have shown my friends."

With this Cereld raises the wand and points it at Wendy, muttering the words of command.

SUBJ: Wench Wendy FROM: FINROD 03/10/90 S#: 787910

Finrod wipes the trickle of blood from the corner of his mouth, gazing from where he lies on the ground at the source of all this trouble. He then looks briefly at all the carnage and mangled bodies around him.

"Villainess, I know not from what hole you crawled, but I will put you in another one before this day is through. Many gods will look with disfavor on your actions, but for now, I need only the aid of Morpheous to hold you in place until I can get past the Entangle. You must SLEEP!" And Finrod scatters a handful of sand in front of himself, as he drags himself to his feet.

I don't really expect this spell to faze her, but her ego will probably make her stick around gloating about it long enough to let me throw my dagger into her ample chest, and follow with dragging myself through the Entangle.

And to think I actually fell for her charade! That galls more than any other!

Spectrum's Comments: Actually, almost everybody fell for Wendy's story. At least at first.

Post Continued:

Cereld utters the command words to his Wand of Fear. A ray shoots out for a split second, covering Wendy. However, she seems to be unaffected by the wand.

Finrod quickly throws a Sleep spell at her, but that too fails to affect the mage.

Validar rises to his feet enraged. "Vile witch! You shall pay dearly for your actions!", he shouts. Wendy merely smiles, mumbles some words and a trio of Magic Missiles end the noble warrior's life.

"You've destroyed the life's work of my father!", Wendy shouts. "I am his instrument of revenge!"

Suddenly, Finrod throws his dagger, plunging it into Wendy's chest.

Wounded, Wendy retreats into the mine.

Spectrum's Comments: I can only assume that Muskateer wasn't planning on returning to Q. Otherwise, I would have just left him as an NPC and instead of getting rid of him like that.

SUBJ: Stephanie

Stephanie stands stunned for several moments. What had appeared to be a great victory turns into a terrible tragedy in mere seconds. She stares at the faces of her fallen comrades. While perhaps not on the best of terms with some of them, she considered them all friends.

'Vengeance shall be ours!'

Remembering the magic still in effect, Steph will wait until it is safe. Then she will join those left in the hunt for this foul enchantress. While waiting, she casts an angry look at that coward of a druid, safely out of the injury. That should be him laying there in eternal sleep, not these valiant warriors!

Spectrum's Comments: No, Steph's not one to let go of a grudge. :D

SUBJ: Dar Thaltus..... FROM: Kazaroth 03/10/90 S#: 416091

.....is flung to the ground by the force of the blast. Shaking his head Dar staggers to his feet and breathlessly watches what transpires next.

After Wendy disappears into the cave Dar stands motionless for a moment taking in all the havoc wreaked upon the Seekers. "My Friends...I suggest that we finish our foul enemy before she gets the chance to regroup and worse...recover from Fin's dagger wound. I doubt she has had time to trap the caves...so I think we should make all haste to catch up to her. Anything she may have had before has most likely been triggered by the beast's passage through."

"Perhaps I should scout ahead and try to catch her unawares.....between my Ranger training and my elven heritage I should be able to accomplish this somewhat.....but I must go ALONE. If anyone were to follow then the surprise would be ruined. I suggest that the rest of you follow at a discreet distance.....approximately 95 ft behind. After my attempt you can rush forward and hopefully close the distance in time to help me vanquish the fiendish Wendy. Wish me Good Fortune........."

Dar will then proceed forward, using his infravision to guide him. He will keep his glowing sword sheathed to prevent detection and will move silently as his fathers before him had shown him allowing no sound to precede his presence.

Upon catching up to Wendy, if Dar succeeds in doing so, he will attack swiftly, using a normal longsword until he is discovered. When he becomes known to Wendy, Dar will switch to his magical blade and cry out to the others to join in the offensive.

Before Dar goes after Wendy he will ask the other members pf the Seekers to loan him a dagger. This he will use as a secondary weapon against Wendy when the time comes, feeling that a shield would be useless at this time.

SUBJ: Cereld FROM: Lanceson 03/11/90 S#: 836971

"Hold it a moment Dar, we will all go in together. This Wendy has been here a little longer than we have, and she was able to stay in there with this beast. I fear that the mine might still have a surprise or two left in it, and I think it best if we find them together rather than alone. Too many of my friends have died today, and I do not wish to see any more meet their fate. I would appreciate it if you would take the point however, as your elven eyesight might give us an advantage that we might yet exploit. " As soon as the entangle spell has worn off, he will rally together his friends.

"Come let us finish this adventure once and for all. Its toll already is much to high." Raising his battle-axe into the air, Cereld will shout out, "Heironeous hear your humble servant. Grant us your blessing in the struggle we are about to engage in so that we might claim justice for the lives of our fallen friends." With that Cereld will lower the battle-axe and gently kiss the blade before entering the mine.

SUBJ: Dar Thaltus..... FROM: Kazaroth 03/11/90 S#: 418639

listens intently to Cereld's words and smiles grimly.

"There is much truth and wisdom in your council Cereld. I will do as you ask and take point duty."

With those words spoken Dar will once again start into the cave with rest of the party in tow... still keeping the 95' distance as stated earlier and blade sheathed. However, anything of interest that Dar finds he will report to Cereld before acting upon. If at all possible Dar will track Wendy to further help in finding her, noting any unusual patterns in her trail, which may give away the presence of any tricks or traps that await the pursuing party.

SUBJ: Wench Hunt.... (R) FROM: FINROD 03/14/90 S#: 428177

Dar, you are, indeed a quiet fellow, but do not deceive yourself...as I can tell you from my own experiences of overconfidence, silence is not to be confused with invulnerability. :)

I think you should stay with the rest of us.

As for using SLEEP spells on this wench, I advise you to save them for other opponents. My own casting was more in the line of confirming my suspicion that Wendy is 5th level. She cast Fireball, a 3rd lvl spell, but there are many items that could have allowed her to create a fireball. No sooner had I confirmed my suspicions by her immunity to my SLEEP, than she gave away to us a GOOD fix on her level. She fired 3 magic missiles, which means 5th or 6th level. If she had been sixth, she would have had access to another fireball, or a lightning bolt, or other 3rd lvl biggie, and would have finished us all on the spot with it. No, I am convinced that she is exactly fifth level, so you would be wasting your SLEEP to cast it. Concentrate on causing damage. Hit points and armor-class are her biggest weaknesses, and even if you only hit her with a dart or two, you are doing more than your sleep could. As I figure it, she probably has three more first level spells and a pair of seconds to hit us with, assuming she is not a specialist. If she is a specialist, I am relatively sure she is not an invoker. We are all vulnerable to the low-level effects of her 1st and 2nd lvl spells, so we cannot afford to let her get one off. We must ruin her concentration every round until she is dead. If any of you are carrying MAGIC MISSILE, then this is a good use for it. It cannot miss, and will assure us of breaking her concentration that round.

If she proves to have other minions at her beck and call, Cereld, you should, I think, designate at least two or three of us to keep zipping her with missile weapons to keep her spells in check while you better fighters finish off the lesser critters.

All of this respectfully submitted, of course, Cereld for your approval.

Hey, while we're killing time waiting for the entangle to fade, anybody got a CURE LIGHT to spare? I'm feeling a bit fragile right now. :)

SUBJ: Wench hunt cont.... (R) FROM: FINROD 03/14/90 S#: 428201

DM: when once we have joined battle with Wendy, I will be keeping a close eye on her using my Spellcraft NWP. If she appears to be beginning any area of effect spells, I'll shout a warning for everyone to scatter, so she cannot catch us all in the same area.

Since all my missile weapons have been destroyed in the plethora of lightning's and fires of late, except the one dagger that I was so generous as to loan to Wendy as a broach (chuckle), I will of necessity be rushing her with drawn shortsword when we see her once again. I need to relocate that lovely ornament I added to her chest... :)

"Again I state that Cereld's words hold much wisdom... I have no plans on becoming another inanimate statistic at this time. Therefore I will only be SCOUTING...and will report anything of interest to Cereld and the rest of the party before acting."

Once again...Dar heads off into the darkness as stated twice before......

SUBJ: Araduin FROM: Deslock 03/14/90 S#: 430006

"Finrod, if it is as you say, and Wendy is immune to my spells, then I fear that my only support in the coming battle will be moral. Quarterstaffs make poor missile weapons, and in the confines of the caves, it is unlikely I will be taking up what little room is available to assault her physically."

While waiting for the party to proceed into the mines, I shall pick through the charred remains of my belongings, salvaging what I can. If, as it appears, all our food and water has been destroyed, we'll need to return to town shortly. If there is time, I shall inspect the ring I recently acquired, attempting to determine how to activate it and it's function.
