The Frontier # 5 - 6

Spectrum's Comments: Putting the Mage Merlin fiasco behind us, it was time to move on. The Seekers arrive in the city of Gateway that became their base of operations. Many of the Gateway characters reappear multiple times in this series and in the other games as well.

With these posts, you start to see group cliques begin to form. Its a natural occurance when ever you get a good sized group of characters together. There also seems to be a lot more free-form roleplaying in the D&D games than in the Champions. Not sure why that is, but it just seems to be the way of things.

The Frontier #5

The battle with the bandits, and the shouting, is over. Using tools provided by Trevor, several graves are dug. (Several members of the caravan died in the attack before the party arrived.) In a quiet ceremony, Merlin and their bodies are laid to rest.

Upon hearing Finrod's plea for the spellbook, Cereld decides to allow him to keep it.

That task complete, those with healing skills tend to the parties and caravaners wounds.

Flint, Dalliance and Finrod find the treasure on the bandits and the cleric. Finrod examines the box, searching for a method to open it. He plays with it for many hours, but cannot open it.

Cereld examines the remains of the Cleric of Hextor for himself. He produces a flask of Holy Water and pours a few drops on the evil clerics Holy Symbol. The Holy Water acts as acid and quickly destroys the symbol.

Trevor suggests that the caravan move on, just in case of another attack. After two hours of travel, the train puts up for the night. Camp is made next to a stream and dinner is served.

"You are all more than welcome to share in our meal", Trevor says. "I fear that a finical reward is out of my hands. This caravan is in the employ of the Crown. However, I am sure that General Logan will give you a reward on your arrival at Gateway."

The night passes without incident. Next morning, Dalliance memorizes Detect Magic. She casts her spell on the items found. She discovers that the cleric's armor, shield, flail and the box are all magical.

That evening, while around the campfire, Trevor speaks of Gateway.

"As you know, Gateway is the home base in the expansion into the Old Keln Empire. The city was reclaimed two years ago. A military force battled a goblin clan over the city. Since then, much remodeling has occurred. The city has been totally fortified from it's run down state."

"As adventurers for the Crown, you'll be given a mansion to use as quarters. Now, don't let the sound of that fool you. The mansions in Gateway date back to the Keln occupation. The walls and roof have been repaired, but you'll be lucky to have furniture."

The rest of the trip passes without event. During the afternoon of the fifth day, you arrive at the City of Gateway. Gateway is situated on a cliff overlooking the lands of the Frontier. The cliff averages only fifty feet in height. Roads going north and south lead from Gateway down the cliff face. The city itself is walled. As Trevor suggested, the wall is a mixture of old and new construction.

GM Notes:

Well, you've made it to Gateway. The Party's account will be opened once Cereld reports to General Logan. The party's account will have 1300 gp in it. 1100 for the party and 200 as a reward for driving the bandits off. Prices are as per the Players Handbook, but not every item may be available. You might wish to discuss what items to buy.

Then there's the distribution of the magic items found and the mysterious box.

Also, for you spellcasters, please list your current memorized spells. All the party has healed during the uneventful journey with the caravan.

SUBJ: Flint (R) FROM: Sir teske 09/10/89 S#: 92818

"I do not have any need of equipment save for provisions for our journey." as for the magic items I am too short to wear the armor and don't have prof. in flail and I have both hands full so I can't use the shield. Perhaps one of the magic users has identify to use in he box?"

SUBJ: Dar Thaltus....... FROM: Kazaroth 09/10/89 S#: 106132

....upon entrance to the city Dar will immediately seek out a bowyer and replace his shortbow with a fine longbow. When he returns to the company of the other party members he will first look to Cereld and say...."Well we are here! Now what??"

With that Dar will sit back and relax waiting for a response or actions by others. At the first opportunity Dar will memorize 2 CLW's and 1 Magical Stone

SUBJ: Dalliance FROM: Random0 09/11/89 S#: 822509

I will purchase a longbow, 24 sheath arrows, 12 flight arrows, a quiver, and small saddlebags. I will also visit the Mages' Guild and Fighters' Guild.

Regarding the priest's things, perhaps we should take them to the Mages' Guild and have them examined. Unless Finrod has Detect Evil. We don't need any cursed items....

In any case, alas, I am also too small to use the armor, and the shield would interfere with casting. Perhaps another of the group could use them.

I will memorize Magic Missile as my current spell, as soon as possible.

SUBJ: Items (R) FROM: FINROD 09/12/89 S#: 86909

I have busied myself over the items we found, and as far as I can tell, none of them are cursed. The Box is a Box of Holding, but I haven't yet found the command word to open it.

My suggestions for the split:

Armor: Stephanie- she fought well and bravely against the Ogre bodyguards, and her AC could stand the improvement.

Shield: Ti-cat or Validar-although Ti-cat has both lower hit points and a worse AC, Validar could easily argue that he did the most damage to the Cleric, so...

Flail: Anyone proficient with one? It is a very good weapon, but alas, my elven heritage encourages me to use bow and longsword. :) If no one is proficient with one I suggest Cereld be given it to use and he could begin studying it.

The box: Whoever gets it will either have to pay to get a more complete analysis than my IDENTIFY could reveal, or spend the time figuring it out (and maybe never succeeding). I would like this item for myself, as it has aroused my curiosity, and also, if I can get it to work, is ideal to my preference to travel light. Of course, if I get it to work, and it turns out to be big enough for a lot of stuff, the whole party would be welcome to place things in it...

Now, about the IDENTIFY...that cost me a 100GP gem out of my own pocket. If the party could pay me to replace it I would be most grateful.

As to shopping, I just need 75 gold for a horse, and 10 GP for personal equipment. The other 15 Gold can go into the party kitty for such tings as lanterns for the humans. Also, if whoever gets the magic shield could pass their old one along to me, it occurs to me that while traveling a horse, it would behoove me (pun intended) to use a shield.

When we select rooms at the 'mansion' I will try to get one next to Stephanie's. :) Also, I think the elves should be spread evenly throughout the house, because our light sleep and keen senses make us more likely to detect intruders. It might not be a bad Idea to mount a guard at night. With this many people, it would only take 1/2 hour apiece.

My default spell will be sleep whenever I do not specifically state otherwise. Since Merlin is gone, I will need to be carrying an offensive spell instead of an Util. ('till 2nd lvl, that is)

SUBJ: Dalliance FROM: Random0 09/12/89 S#: 792073

(Hiding a grin behind a serious expression) "At this point, I feel the armor and weapons should be divided according to need. As to the box, I have no desire to own it: Finrod is welcome. As for the 100gp gem, Finrod, we should recompense you for identifying something YOU want? I bow to the decision of Cereld on this matter." This is not personal, Fin, just cynical...

SUBJ: Stephanie

'My thanks for your suggestion about the armor, Finrod. But I'll leave that decision to Cereld.'

Upon entering the city, Steph will look around. Looks like this is going to be a fun place. It's so big...

'Hey, wait up Dar! I'm interested in gettin' a bow, too. I've you're not busy, perhaps you can help me pick one out. I'm not really sure I can pick out a good one.'

Once Cereld has meet with the city leaders and we are shown to our mansion, I'll wander the building.

'Wow... I've never seen a place like this... Never had anything like this at home...'

Guess I'll have to find the fighters guild and train.

'Now what are we gonna do, Cereld?'

Spectrum's Comments: Anyone want to bet who gets involved with helping Steph get a bow?

SUBJ: Raeden FROM: Belrek 09/13/89 S#: 787085

(Raeden appears very ill at ease upon entering the fortress with a more rapid pulse and sweating [like a claustrophic person in a closet])

"Excuse me, Cereld, but I must respectfully request that I may find myself a safe haven outside the fortress; it is not the company but rather the environment that puts me ill at ease. As to possessions, all I request is a good riding horse and some provisions for both the horse and myself. I need/desire nothing else. I will await your decision and then be on my way. I will tell you how to contact me as soon as I have found a proper place. I feel that Obad-Hai will be with me while I am living on the land, so you need not worry about my safety."

Spectrum's Comments: Apparently, he's allergic to cities too...

SUBJ: ti-cat FROM: JP TiCat 09/14/89 S#: 409033

"Cereld," says Ti-Cat when he sees him alone, "I'll not ask you for much in the way of funds.

"If you see fit to give me the shield we've taken, I'll accept gladly. But Validar fought well, and sure he is an honorable man. I'll not begrudge him it.

"I'd like gold to buy splint mail, if I may, and the makings of some good arrows... nobody's arrows fly like mine," he explains, stroking the striped cat fur on his shoulders.

"Oh... and perhaps a few coppers... for flowers?" he asks, with a nervous little smile.

SUBJ: Cereld FROM: Lanceson 09/14/89 S#: 429366

"Well Raeden you are more than welcome to stay with us, but if that is your wish, so be it. I would ask that you wait however until we find out how long we will be here though.

As to the division of the magic items, I feel that the armor should go to Ti-Cat. His armor could use more improvement than anyone else in the party, and as he is good with that bow of his, he will be less likely to use the shield.

As to the box, Finrod it is yours. I think you should also get the money you need to have it opened from the party as what is inside may be helpful or harmful to the party and we should know about it now instead of when you yourself can afford it. I would like to be there when it is opened however, as this did belong to a cleric of my enemy. As to replacing your gem, I think that should come out of party funds for the same reason as I mentioned giving you the money for opening the box. We may need your spell again and it would be a shame if you weren't able to cast it because you didn't have the money.

As to the shield, (Cereld picks up the shield and walks over to Validar) I would like you to have this Validar as a peace offering. Words were said by the both of us in a stressful time, that I know weren't completely meant. Although I must ask that you curve your impetuousness from now on, I hope that there are no hard feelings between us. (At that Cereld hands Validar the shield and holds his hand out for his.)

Now since no one can use this flail, and no one has said that they wish it, if there are no objections I will keep it for myself, as it seems to be a very interesting weapon. Since we have had first choice of magic, the rest will get first choice when we find some more.

As to money, I think that all the money we found be divided by all in the party, including the two new comers. I do think that we should keep the pay that we are getting and the reward in a group fund for now at least so that all may benefit from it. This fund can be used for such things like opening the box and getting us all horses as well as replacing any broken weapons and arrows. These things will benefit us all in the long run, and should be paid for by the group. If there are any objections to this however I will reconsider it.

Now I have to go check in with General Logan and get us all squared away. I ask that Validar and Sir Radagast accompany me in this endeavor as to lend me their wisdom. If there is nothing immediate that the General wishes us to do, I would like to remain here a week for us to settle in and get all that needs to be done, done before we leave. Agreed?"

SUBJ: Arafel (R) FROM: Kityana 09/14/89 S#: 813102

Well...the only thing I'll be needin is a horse, unless ye prefer me to keep ridin double with someone...

::looks at Val::

I don't mind either way

::smiles::

SUBJ: Thanks, Cereld, and all... FROM: FINROD 09/14/89 S#: 435078

Of you. What you say is quite true, Cereld, about opening the box, and getting it useable, but I feared to appear greedy, and was quite willing to tote around a useless box for however long it took to save the money or figure it out on my own. I am sure that Dalliance merely spoke everyone's first thoughts when she said that just getting an item should make me happy and I should shut up and take what was given without asking more. Let me know when you are free to go to the Mages guild with me, I need to check in there anyway.

In the meantime, yes, Stephanie, I would be most honored to aid you in picking out a bow, though I am sure Dar would not allow you to be cheated if he were around. I'll also go with you to the Fighter's guild, as that is another place I have to touch base with, then arrange to train in my...er...Scout skills! Yeah, that's it! Scout skills, so that I may continue to better serve the party in the...er...More delicate areas of operations. :)

Since I am sure that Validar will not wish to give up the shield he has carried for so long to a mere common Mercenary, especially considering it is blazoned with his family crest, I withdraw the request that whoever gets the magic one pass his old one along. I can wait 'till we gather some loot to get that shield benefit. I wouldn't be using it very often anyway.

Dar, Steph, ready to go?

Spectrum's Comments: You guessed it!

GM Notes:

The party can add money to the expense account also. It works similar to a bank account. Thus, including the currency from the bandit encounter, the party has a grand total of:

1327 gp, 40 sp, 3 ep, 30 cp

According to my notes, only 5 of you have horses. Six horses will cost you 450 gp. That does not include any riding gear.

A knock spell to open the box will cost 200 gp.

The purchase everything mentioned thus far will lower the party's account

to:

439 gp, 3 ep, 17 sp, 30 cp

I should also mention that Arafel and Ti-Cat both have the bowyer/fletcher proficiency. In one week, a bowyer can make a shortbow, a longbow, or 7d6 arrows. The raw materials for these items is 1/10th the cost of the finished product.

SUBJ: Well! I guess that solves..(R) FROM: FINROD 09/15/89 S#: 405137

our archery problem. 22.5 gold is much easier on the account than 225. :)

Assuming, of course, the bowyers are willing. Can you guys whip off a powerful longbow and 7d6 arrows, or would you rather carouse the week away?

:)

Dumb question.

SUBJ: Raeden (R) FROM: Belrek 09/15/89 S#: 396731

Raeden looks directly at Cereld after hearing his words (Cereld can see the great pain in Raeden's eyes), "Cereld, I understand but I must leave now! I will meet you at the main gate this evening and you may inform me as to how long we will be staying. I will meet you in the same manner every night of our stay here, until I have trained my "messenger". I will fill you in when the messenger is ready. Raeden will then hurry off in the direction of the gate by way of several of the local stores to purchase the necessary provisions and his "messenger".

SUBJ: Dalliance (R) FROM: Random0 09/15/89 S#: 789169

The allocations of items and funds are fine with me. Cereld's reasons for paying Finrod's costs out of party funds are quite reasonable.

"Fin, just be careful when the box is opened; the previous owner was a person of great evil."

"Ti-cat, if you think you will have the time over the next few weeks, I would be happy to pay you to make me a longbow. I'd much rather have one made by a friend than a stranger. And I'd also prefer to give my money to you than an unknown armorer. I can purchase arrows to start with, to avoid tying up too much of your free time."

If Ti-cat agrees, I will still visit a few armorers' shops, to browse the edged weapons. Also, as stated, I will visit the Fighters and Mages Guilds, and do some general sightseeing. Anyone who wants to accompany me is welcome.

"Raeden, let me know if there's anything I can pick up for you in the city."

SUBJ: Dar Thaltus FROM: Kazaroth 09/15/89 S#: 92829

Looking first to Steph then Finrod, Dar stands up briskly and readies his meager possessions in preparation for the venture into the city. Before he goes Dar will ask the party's bowyers to fashion a longbow for him as well noting that he feels a shortbow to be inadequate. If anyone decides to shop for mounts Dar will gladly volunteer his help in finding the choicest horses, as he is adept at that through his training and empathy with animals.

SUBJ: Validar FROM: Panther13 09/16/89 S#: 794434

Validar will take the shield and the hand offered to him by Cereld.

"I do not hold grudges, friend Cereld. We simply had a difference of opinion and the matter is long since ended. However, I will gladly accept this shield taken in battle from our enemy."

"You are correct, Finrod. I have NO intention of giving up the shield that I have carried and not only because it bears my coat of arms. I fully intend to keep my regular shield in use. I have trained with it and it is like a part of me. To part with it, at this time, would not be a wise move, I feel."

"Arafel, you are more than welcome to continue to ride with me, if you so desire. Just remember our arrangement..." Validar smiles in return.

I intend to pay a visit to a suitable trainer to take advantage of the experience accrued to this point. Also, I will spend my free time looking into the fashioning of a suit of full plate armor, either in exchange for the magical shield, or sell it to an interested party and purchase the armor. I will however also purchase a replica of the shield that belonged to that soulless slug, and have it emblazoned in the same manner as a memento of sorts.

Spectrum's Comments: Ah-ha! Secret arrangements! Who knows what else went on behind the scenes here? And here I've been saying that Finrod was the smooth one... :D

SUBJ: ti-cat (R) FROM: JP TiCat 09/16/89 S#: 405582

Ti-Cat approaches Dalliance. His face reddens as he says, "I would be pleased to make a longbow for you. I cannot accept the money of a person who may save my life, or her own, one-day with my handiwork. If you will pay for the raw materials, I will pick them out myself and make for you the best bow of which I am able."

Later, he speaks to Finrod. The message is much the same, save that he will begin on Finrod's bow as soon as he has finished Dalliance's.

With money supplied by the party members, Ti-Cat will go out to find or buy the raw materials. First he will make a longbow for Dalliance, then for Finrod. Should he have time after that, he will make arrows for both of them and for himself. With any spare time (if there is any) each day, he will practice his own archery.

SUBJ: Arafel.. (R) FROM: Kityana 09/16/89 S#: 422965

Well being Dal is so busy, I would be happy to make you a bow and some arrows Dar...shall we go pick out the materials?

::looks at Dar::

SUBJ: Dar Thaltus..... FROM: Kazaroth 09/16/89 S#: 842441

.....offers a faint smile towards Arafel and agrees to her suggestion.

"Perhaps we might find a mount for you as well? I would gladly help you pick a horse to suit both your needs and your tastes."

With that Dar extends an arm to Arafel and heads off into the city in search of materials, a mount and perhaps some adventure.....

Spectrum's Comments: Or does the fair Arafel have another suitor??

SUBJ: Dalliance (R) FROM: Random0 09/16/89 S#: 792665

Brushing an errant strand of black hair from my face, I look into Ti-cat's eyes.

"You are a true friend, and I shall not demean your offer by insisting you take payment for your work. Here are 50gp for materials. Please let me know if you need more. for such a piece of craft and skill, I don't wish you to skimp." I reach out my hand, touching his arm. "And, thank you. Such...friendship...is not often found."

Since Ti will not take payment, I will think long on a gift for him to return his friendship.

SUBJ: ti- cat again FROM: JP TiCat 09/17/89 S#: 438099

Speechless, Ti-Cat busies himself picking lint from his tunic. He drops the gold pieces on the floor, and scrabbles to pick them up as he waits for Dal to go away. When she does, he gazes after her until she leaves the room.

Spectrum's Comments: Perhaps another romance brewing? This is almost like a soap opera!

The Frontier #6

The Seekers have arrived at the City of Gateway. Riding through the town, the party can see that it is a curious mixture of old and new. The town is full of life. A boomtown would be the best description.

The party follows the main road into the center of town. The middle of town is a large field. Many booths and hawkers fill the area.

While the rest of the party explore the city, except for Raeden, Cereld, Radagast and Validar visit the General.

The command center to the exploration force is a large mansion in the northeast corner of the city. After being showing the papers given to Cereld, they are shown into a large room.

Seated behind a long table are four people, three men and a woman. The man in the middle stands.

"I am General Logan. Welcome to Gateway." Upon seeing Validar, the man breaks into a wide grin. "Validar! The last time I say you, you were knee-high to a goblin!"

The General goes on to explain that he and Validar's father served together in the war. After a brief reunion, the General continues on.

"Please forgive my manners. Permit me to introduce the rest of the Council of Gateway. Sharadin, high mage of Gateway, Selinda, Abbess of Azrella and Durn, Patriarch of Heironeous."

After a brief discussion, the General concludes the meeting.

"You're account is now set-up. I'll have an aid escort you to your quarters. We generally don't assign missions until after the summer festival. However, if you wish to fullfill your required mission now, you may request an assignment. You can also check of the message boards outside the mansion. Several missions are posted there. You can also go out on your own."

Also, when the Box is mentioned, Sharadin suggests that you bring it to his private residence. He would be more than happy to assist in opening it for small fee.

Afterwards you are shown to your own mansion. The mansion you are given lies along the eastern edge of the city, along the cliff side. The house is surrounded by an 8' wall. There are two gates. There is a sizeable stable and a corral on the grounds. The house itself is 'H' shaped. It has 25 rooms, 2 floors and a basement. There is plenty of room in the courtyard for an archery range.

The house itself is structurally sound. There is little furniture and the only room that you are sure of its purpose is the kitchen.

Meanwhile, the rest of the party takes in the city. Several interesting taverns are found as well as various equipment shops.

There really isn't a true fighters or mage's guild. The city is simply to new to have one founded. However, there is a Crown sponsored training hall. Here experienced fighters, mages and thieves are paid to train adventurers. Thief training is available here to prevent formation of an active Thief's Guild in the city.

Later the party reunites to settle into their house.

That night, a light rain falls. Outside the city, Raeden locates a small cave for shelter. In the rear of the cave, he discovers some odd writing of the wall. He cannot understand it.

Next morning, the women of the party find flowers before their doors. While several of the party run individual errands, such as collecting material for the bows, etc., Cereld, Finrod, and whoever wishes to join them travel to Sharadin's residence.

The door is open by an attractive young woman with blonde hair and blue eyes. She introduces herself as Sherry, Sharadin's daughter. She escorts you to her father's lab. In the lab you find the Mage with his other daughter, Sherry's twin, Terry.

"Well, what do we have here, gentlemen?" he says. When shown the box, he places it on a worktable. "Do you know what you got here? I believe it's a Chest of Security."

Sharadin mumbles a few words, and the box springs open.

"Aha! That did the trick. I was right. It is a Chest of Security."

He turns to chest towards the party. As impossible as it may seem, there is an area beyond the opening of the box. In this area are several items.

Sharadin reaches in and pulls the items out. There are 2 scrolls, a dagger, a ring, a bundle of 19 arrows, a pearl necklace and a longsword.

"You've made an interesting discovery here. All the items are magical!"

GM Notes: After purchasing the material for the bows and arrows and the horses, the party's account now stands at 783 gp.

Cereld, your training will have to take place at Heironeous' temple.

To complete everything that the group intends to accomplish will take 3 weeks.

Spectrum's Comments: And twins! Sherry & Terry turned out to be very popular with the lads of the Seekers. At least two of them tried to put the moves on the lovely lasses. Of course, given their father's an archmage there was some element of danger invovled. Sharadin is another descendent of my Victor the First characters family.

General Logan was named after a favorite henchman to Victor the First. I believe he was acquired via a Deck of Many Things. Selinda was a priestess I had used before as well. The flowers outside the womens door was left by Ti Cat.

Mail From: FINROD Date: Sunday 17-Sep-89 21:44 EDT

Could Sharadin be so kind as to explain to me a little of the function of this

Chest of Security? Thanks; --JIM

Spectrum's Comments: A Chest of Security was basically a Bag of Holding that could be locked shut. Sharadin used a Knock spell to open it up. Much to Cereld's chagrin the command word to open the chest translated into "Hail Hextor!"

SUBJ: Oh, Just Grand! (R) FROM: FINROD 09/17/89 S#: 73820

Just what we need! Seven more magic Items of unknown function! :)

Well, Cereld, I guess we can at least check some of these out ourselves. The scrolls should be immediately determinable as Clerical or Magical. If magical, I can take Read Magic tomorrow and let you know what is on them. Then you can decide whether to destroy them (if evil), give them to Dalliance, or what. If they are Clerical, there are only two of you among us.

The longsword and dagger could be carried into battle by any one of our courageous fighters (myself, if none else have the courage) after a quick detect evil to possibly catch evil intent. The arrows could possibly be split among the archers.

But those items of jewelry....I know I don't want to be the one that necklace goes around first! :)

Perhaps our best option would be to offer our illustrious Archmage his pick of one item to identify the whole kit and caboodle, then you would know where best to place the items in the party. Except the scrolls, of course. You and I can do those.

You must make your own decision where to allocate the items, but I might point out that Stephanie could probably benefit from a better sword, and Ti-cat and Arafel could probably DEVASTATE an enemy with really good arrows to enhance their not inconsiderable skill.

The other stuff will probably be really hard decisions. Boy, I'm glad YOU ended up with the tough job! I'd hate to be in your shoes. :)

SUBJ: On another note... FROM: FINROD 09/17/89 S#: 74456

I guess we better see to at least beds, footlockers, cookware, and a trestle table with benches. The bare essentials of barracks life, worthy of any mercenary band!

It would probably be much cheaper to hire a live-in cook and purchase food and drink in bulk, than to eat out all the time. That would also be someone to look after the place when we are away. It also helps the camaraderie of the group if we share meals together.

Oh, and Ti-cat... the Bow we need is for Stephanie, not myself. The one I have is adequate to the task, but Steph needs one of her own if I am to properly teach her the art of the archer. No doubt you could aid me in instructing her, as you seem to be familiar with some pretty esoteric bow techniques....

SUBJ: items FROM: Sir teske 09/18/89 S#: 427493

I would like either the sword or some of the arrows. As for the rest due to my nature as a dwarf I would have a hard time getting them to work properly.

SUBJ: Validar (R) FROM: Panther13 09/19/89 S#: 70723

I wish to examine this board of adventure to see what sort of format it has and what is available. I also think that it might be in our interest to take advantage of the offer to complete our obligatory mission for the crown. The sooner done, the sooner we can be on to other things!

I also wish to go about the few things that I indicated earlier (as per our conversation, MAD).

SUBJ: Raeden FROM: Belrek 09/20/89 S#: 430175

Raeden, after establishing himself in the cave and making note of the strange writing for possible translation by one of the other party members or someone in the city, will go to the gate to meet with Cereld to find out the length of the parties stay and to talk with him, "Cereld, I have my friend Femar here (holding pigeon), he will function as my link with you. I have instructed him that it will be one of his tasks to come to you bearing messages and return to me with them. It will take about a week or so for him to get fully accustomed to his ask and the surroundings.

I will be training him on how to find your dwellings and to identify you, so I would appreciate a little of your time each day, if possible so that you can help in the training. Also, I need to know where it is exactly where you are staying.

Here (hand him parchment) look this over and show it around the party, it is a copy of the strange script that was written on the back of the cave that I am staying in. I would appreciate knowing what it means, if anything. Thank you!

If you don't mind now, I think it is best if we hurry on the quick tour of the city route to your home; my stomach and cities are not in agreement, if you know what I mean (attempt at half-smile)."

SUBJ: GM Notes: The Mission Board(R) FROM: Mad DM1 09/21/89 S#: 817907

Current listings on the mission board.

Posted by the Crown:

'50,000 gp reward to the party bearing proof of elimination of the Mountain King.'

'10,000 gp reward for locating the stronghold of the New Keln alliance.'

'25,000 gp reward for dealing with the threat of Emerald, the Dragon.'

'20,000 gp reward for complete exploration of the so-called Dungeon of Death.'

Posted by the Temple of Azrella:

'10,000 gp reward for the hearty souls who vanquish the Zombie Master.'

Posted by the Temple of Heironeous:

'10,000 gp reward for the location of the main Temple of Hextor.'

'75,000 gp reward for destruction of said temple.'

There are a few other postings. Most deal with such menial tasks as guard duty, etc.

However, while looking the board over, Validar notices a young woman post a message and disappear into the crowd. Her message reads:

'The aid of the party of adventurer's is sought. Quest: Location of missing father. I fear I have little to offer in the way of reward. But I desperately need assistance. Contact Wendy at the Farway'd Inn.'

Spectrum's Comments: I had no idea what some of those missions involved. I would only worry about that if they actually looked into them. I learned in my earlier live gaming days to only design what I knew for sure would actually be used. Anything else could just be ideas and rough notes. I would imagine that by the end of the game, the reward on the Zombie Master would have gone up considerably...

SUBJ: ti-cat the bowyer FROM: JP TiCat 09/21/89 S#: 841165

As Ti-Cat spots Dalliance crossing the courtyard, he stands and holds up her hand to her. She comes over to him with a smile.

"Here," he says, "see what I've bought." He holds out a five-foot length of pale wood for her inspection. As she takes it, he says, "It's ash. Many there are who prefer yew, and yew is a fine bow-wood. But this is as fine a length of ash as I've seen; it will be the bow you deserve."

Dalliance hands the wood back to him. "I'm sure you will make it a fine bow, Ti," she says, restraining a smile as she notes the eagerness in his two-colored eyes.

"I have to measure you now," he says, pulling a length of cord from his pack.

"Measure me?" the slender elf replies.

"Stand straight," Ti-Cat says, "and hold your arms straight out to the side, please."

She does, and he stands there foolishly, wondering how to measure her reach without standing against her, her face buried in his midsection. Finally, he says brusquely, "Turn around." He blurts "Please!" to cover his embarassment.

She turns, and he stands behind her, stretching the cord so that the ends touch her middle fingers. He is careful not to stand too close, relying on his much longer reach to stretch the cord taut while remaining away from her. Still, despite himself, he inhales the scent of her hair.

Silently, Ti-Cat reaches for a knife as he carefully holds the cord at the place her finger reached. He cuts the cord there.

When he can speak, he says, "About four and a half feet, I should think. Give me a few days, please, and you'll have your bow. Then we'll need to see how heavy a pull you'll need."

Looking over her shoulder at him, Dalliance says, "Thank you, Ti. You are a good friend. Are you done?"

"Done," he murmers.

"Thanks again. See you!" she smiles, and is gone.

Ti-Cat gazes after her and wordlessly turns to begin forming the white ash into a bow.

Spectrum's Comments: This was what I meant by free-from role playing. Simply doing things in character that didn't require GM monitoring. That seemed to happen more with the D&D players than the Champs players. Ti does seem rather smitten with our lady elf

SUBJ: flint FROM: Sir teske 09/21/89 S#: 791423

"I say we should try to find the girls missing father. After all we may just bump into the other missions posted. As for dragon hunting I doubt our parties ability to vanquish the creature.

(PERHAPS AFTER WE GAIN SOME LEVELS however I would be MORE THEN WILLING TO KILL THE MF!)

SUBJ: Stephanie

I agree with Flint. There is someone in need and we must help. Perhaps me and Val can go question the girl?

In the meantime I will continue my daily training at the training hall.

Upon moving into the manor, I'll secure a stall for my horse, Thunder. I'll enter the market place and get him some carrots to munch on.

When Cereld and Fin go to the mage's house, I'll tag along. I've never met a powerful mage before! (No offense, Fin and Dal!) When the box is opened and the area behind found, Steph will be amazed.

'WOW!! This is incredible!'

She sticks her arm in the box and feels around the area inside.

'I never seen anything like this back home!'

Home, it's so far away now... For a brief moment, the woman in scarlet misses life on the farm... But only for a moment. So far, the adventurers life is too much fun!

Upon seeing the magic sword, Steph picks it up.

'This is truly a fine blade. So light. So perfectly balanced. The weapon of a warrior.'

Steph will place it back on the table, but continues to stare at it.

Spectrum's Comments: How's that for a subtle hint?

SUBJ: Charity already? FROM: FINROD 09/22/89 S#: 845993

I dislike working for nothing when our coffers are so low.

Still...she does appear to need help. I suppose it would be a worthy mission, if not a profitable one. I will follow wherever Cereld leads, and remain at Stephanie's side through whatever danger she chooses to face. :)

Is this what we're going to do, then?

SUBJ: Dal's bow FROM: JP TiCat 09/23/89 S#: 822712

Ti-Cat surveys his handiwork. He has tested Dalliance's strength to put the right pull on the bow, he has finished the shaping of the wood, and he has, unknown to Dalliance, carved two designs into the bow.

At the grip, he has carved and stained her initial in the elven script, intertwined about a rose with thorns. At the end of the bow, he has carved, but not stained, his signature, a tiny, striped wildcat face.

He finishes coating the bow to protect it, satisfied with his work. He hopes Dalliance likes it as well. After presenting it to her, he will begin working on Stephanie's bow.

Spectrum's Comments: All of the special stuff to the bow was Ti's idea.

SUBJ: Cereld (R) FROM: Lanceson 09/23/89 S#: 405322

Cereld picks up both scrolls after the box is opened. The one that is magical he quickly puts back down. The other one, however, he stares at intensely and then says, "Sacrifice? Heironeous protect us all! Finrod, Stephanie, put everything back in the box, except the necklace and ring. I'll take them with me and try to find out what they are. We'll divide them up later. Finrod, just in case, could you get what you need to cast a couple of those identify spells of yours? I have to run right now, but I want EVERYONE at the house tonight. We have some discussing to do. Sharadin, thank you for your help. Sherry, Terry it was nice meeting you and I hope to see you again."

With that Cereld places the non-magical scroll, the necklace and the ring carefully into his sack. He then heads out the door as quickly as he can. He practically breaks into a run on his way to the temple of Heironeous. When he is there, he will burst in through the doors.

"Forgive my rudeness, but I must see the master at once. It is a matter of what I feel is dire consequences."

At that Cereld will hopefully be brought to Durn, "Durn, we found something in that box that was mentioned at our meeting, that I felt you must see. I need your wisdom and skill to figure out what to do about it. I hoped that you might ask Heironeous for some guidance in this matter."

With that I carefully take out the scroll and hand it to him.

After this discussion, Cereld will bring up the fact that he needs training. He will also make a peculiar request, "Durn, I also have some magic items found in that same box. I would like to try them on here, as to try to determine their nature, so that if they are tainted, you could help me remove them. If you agree to this, please understand that I want to remove them as soon as I am finished, so do not listen to me otherwise when they are on." If it is agreed upon, Cereld will first try the ring, and then the necklace. "Thank you Durn for your help, I will return in the morning to begin my training."

About this time it should be time to meet Raeden. After the druid explains what he intends to do, Cereld adds, "Perhaps it would be better then if you train two messengers, this way we could both have one at our locations. Also we are all getting together for a meeting now. Since I feel that it is also a good idea for all of us to know how to get to your cave if need be, wait here a moment while I get the others and we will meet out there. This way you can show everyone the strange writings at the same time."

At that Cereld quickly heads back towards the house and gathers the others. After arriving at Raeden's cave and settling down after everyone tries read the writing on the wall, and the requests that Flint and Steph have to help the girl, Cereld will start,

"Ok now we have a lot to discuss here. First of all, let me tell you what was on that scroll that Finrod no doubt has told you about by now. It was nothing magical, but rather part of the plans that the priests of Hextor have. Later this summer, they intend to gather a massive amount of magic items at this city here (show them map) and sacrifice them to their evil god for some sort of immense power. After a discussion with Durn, a priest of my god, we figured out...(add whatever the priest says here).

Now about what we are going to do right now, I am going to be tied up at the temple for at least a week. Finrod, your idea for hiring a cook is good and I'll go you one step further. Let us see if we can hire some family preferably one where the husband can keep up the place while we are gone, and his wife and children can prepare our meals when we are home. Now normal wages for this work would be about 3 maybe for gold a month, but we are hardly a normal group, so I say we offer the family 10 gp besides room and board. Dar can you make up a notice of employment and hang it on the board in the morning, but don't say how much we will pay on the sign. I would also wish that you and Dal screen out the would be applicants, as the offer will probably draw all types and I am sure you realize that we wish to have a family of a good nature for the job.

Finrod, could you and Flint, during the next few days go and purchase us some furniture at least. The bare floor of our abode is starting to wear on me already.

Now about the girl, Validar, perhaps you and Steph should find out some more information from her and then we'll see what we can do to help.

Last but not least, the magic items that we found. Finrod, can you open that box again. (Cereld winces at the command word) Please say that with a note of sarcasm in your voice if you can. I would appreciate it if you could learn that spell that Sharadin used to open that box as soon as possible so you don't have to say that anymore.

Ok where were we? (Cereld will reach in and pull out the sword) Steph since I saw you admiring this so much it is yours.

Dal, this scroll contains mage work, I hope you can use it.

Flint, you and Arafel can divide up these arrows here; use them sparingly as they are all we have for the moment.

As soon as Finrod helps to tell me what this ring and necklace are, I can decide who they will help the best.

That's all I have to say except, was anyone able to read what is written on that wall over there?"

Spectrum's Comments: And that's how you get what you want around here!

SUBJ: Raeden FROM: Belrek 09/23/89 S#: 799447

Raeden listens to Cereld's suggestion of a second pigeon and agrees. "It seems like a wise choice, but I will need your help in getting the birds accustomed to you and in teaching them to abide you."

When the party is together again, in the cave, Raeden will approach Dalliance before the meeting begins, "Dalliance, it is nice to see you again. I remember that you said when I last saw you that if I needed something in town you would be happy to assist. Well, I am respectfully requesting your assistance now. I am not in need of supplies as much as assistance. You see I am currently training a messenger (looking to the pigeon) that shall deliver messages between Cereld and myself, and he has asked that I train another, so that each of us may have such a messenger with us. Well, anyway what I need is assistance. The birds are not as much the problem as the environment. As you know, I am not well-taken to cities and they tend to be disagreeable to me; well the birds tend to share the same feelings for city-life so I need an extra set of hands to manage/calm them during the training. I can think of no better assistance in such an endeavor than one of Elven kind, but if you are too busy or don't desire to assist then I will understand" (will await response)

(After Cereld's speech) Raeden speaks up, "I think that assisting the girl might be the best path, for what is more important preserving the greatest treasure, life or padding our coffers. I will abide by the decision of the party, but will do "missions for money" with a bitter taste in my mouth. I understand that others may be guided in life by such cause and that the party needs currency to function/survive, but I personally don't think we should be selling our "souls" to the highest bidder. I have said too much and don't wish to force my personal beliefs on the party. I will tend to my duties and await the parties' decision. I, humbly request that you forgive me for my outburst, but my beliefs are my life and thus are constantly in my thoughts, words and actions."

(Raeden will then remain silent so that others may now say their piece)

SUBJ: Certainly, Cereld,... (R) FROM: FINROD 09/23/89 S#: 809986

I can indeed work on identifying the nature of the necklace and ring, however, the process will take a couple of days, and cannot begin until I complete my training. Since I will only be training for a week, and we seem to have about three weeks worth of things to do, that shouldn't be a problem, should it?

I will need you to fill me in on EXACTLY what you did, saw and felt when you tried the items on, as that will greatly enhance the IDENTIFY.

As to Raeden: there is no need for pointed remarks, friend, as I also feel the importance of doing good deeds and saving lives...I just think that we should always receive enough recompense to cover the value of our skills. If we are always working for charity, we will always be lacking ourselves. I hardly think that equates with either "lining our pockets" or "selling our souls to the highest bidder".

Cereld, are you sure you want a couple of soldiers like Flint and I shopping for furniture? We will get you the maximum value for money spent, to be sure, but our idea of comfortable and others' ideas of comfortable my not quite coincide. :)

SUBJ: Dal (R) FROM: Random0 09/23/89 S#: 70955

After being measured by TiCat for my bow, I am quite flattered by his enthusiasm for the project, and can hardly wait to hold it. I am sure that it will be a Fine piece of craftsmanship.

Returning from my shopping and Guild visits, I listen to Cereld's comments.

"I will be happy to help screen applicants. A hard-working, pleasant, and trustworthy group will certainly make or time spent in Gateway more pleasurable, and we will know that all will be well in our house while we are gone. And, that things will be ready when we return from our adventuring." I will study the scroll carefully. If necessary, I will find a place to use my Magic Missile spell, so that I can memorize Read Magic, to use in my study.

Later, speaking with Raeden, I answer, "I will be delighted to help you train your pigeons. Just tell me what you need done to accustom them to the city, and I will do it."

I also tell Cereld and the others "I am glad that you seem to favor helping the lass. I have no doubt we will find some financial reward whatever we do, but we may be the only chance this girl and her father have. The gods will look well on this, and we can use all the help we can get from that direction."

I will divide my time among the various duties mentioned above, plus getting my gear ready for our first mission, and arranging suitable stabling for Rhymer with Thunder. I will devote at least 3 hours each evening to studying the scroll, and my own spells. I will spend at least 10 hours a week practicing my martial skills, either at the house or with others at the Guild center.

SUBJ: VALIDAR FROM: Panther13 09/23/89 S#: 799890

"I have no problem with approaching the young lady to determine the nature of her problem. There may not be much monetary reward involved, however there is much honor in accepting such a task."

Validar will go to the meeting place as soon as Stephanie is able.

Also, in addition to everything else, I will also make suitable stabling arrangements for Havok, my warhorse.

Spectrum's Comments: Havok was a standard name for a mount for Muskateer's characters.
