Archangel is a mutant who has large, white wings. He can fly with bird-like ease, but has difficulty in carrying passengers or any additional weight with him. Archangel's eyesight is far greater than any normal human, being able to make out details miles away. Jean Paul has had basic combat training and uses a sword in battle. He is quick and agile.

Jean Paul Gaston was abandoned by his parents shortly after birth and placed in a French orphanage. As a young child he was adopted by Dr. Yvette St. Germaine, who later went on to found L'Institut Thoth in Switzerland. Archangel did not respond well to her authoritarian ways and not only broke ties with Dr. St. Germaine, but had his name legally changed back to that of his parents. After an ill-fated recruitment attempt by IMAGE, Archangel left Europe and wandered the world for several years. During this time he met and was befriended by Gladiator. Later when Gladiator started the Young Champions, Archangel joined the team. Archangel considers his wings to be just a normal part of him, and has an irrational fear of losing them.

Personally, Archangel comes across as arrogant and abrasive. In reality this is behavior is used to over compensate for his unusual appearance. Jean Paul was routinely teased as a child for being different. Archangel is rapidly gaining a reputation as a woman chaser. However he has yet to catch any female and his reputation for being rebuffed is growing as well. Because of his upbringing, Archangel can be vindictive and petty when he feels he has been wronged.

Recently, Archangel has encountered a Japanese woman born with wings like himself. Calling herself Black Raven, this mystery woman has introduced herself to Jean Paul. The effect on Archangel was immediate and he appears to be greatly attracted to Black Raven.
