Cr 571 July Through August

GM Notes: The Seekers are on their way back to Gateway following the Hextorite army looking to conqueror it! There was a lot of down time following the Siege of Gateway, so I combined July and August.

July 3rd –

(Stephanie's Tale) The Seekers come across a battle between hobgoblins and orcs. The orcs are part of the Hextorite army, while the hobgoblins see them as an enemy invading their territory. After letting the enemies fight each other for a time, the Seekers slay and drive off those that remain.

GM Notes: A side encounter along the way to Gateway. Most humanoid races don't get along as it is and if you saw an army crossing your lands you'd have to expect trouble.

July 8th -

(Stephanie's Tale) The Seekers reach Sven's Stop and find that it has been attacked by the goblin army. The workers there were caught off guard, as the goblins marched at night and attacked while most were still asleep. The goblins are holed up in the buildings to spare them from the bright light of day. The Seekers move in and take the goblins out. The Seekers rest at Sven's Stop after their victory.

GM Notes: Since I added all those caravans stops on the way out, made sense to use them on the return trip as well.

July 10th –

(Stephanie's Tale) The Seekers find Wykroft's Waystation has also been attacked by the enemy forces. It has taken heavy damage and a few survivors are hiding in the ruins. They had fled during the attack to the forest, but came back once the army had moved on. The Seekers aid the survivors as best they can and rest up for the evening, as tomorrow they will reach Gateway and the army.

July 11th -

(The Frontier) The Seekers close in on Gateway. As they get closer they can see smoke in the sky in the direction of Gateway. Bernice, Dar and Finrod ride ahead to scout out the situation. They found that a roadblock has been set up and that it is being guarded by men in leather armor. The scouts decide on a plan of action. Dar sneaks past the guards to scout the situation up ahead, while Finrod spies on the guards. Bernice rides back to the main group to alert them of the danger. Dar finds that no fighting is going on right now, but the Hextorite army is camped in the area below Gateway. They have siege machines at their command and their army includes orcs, goblins, ogres and even a few giants. Having learned all that they could, the scouts return to the main body of the group. Battle plans are hatched and the Seekers split into two groups. One group is a stealth unit whose mission is to infiltrate the enemy camp and cause chaos. The second unit will ride in several minutes later with the goal of taking out the enemy command structure. The Seekers ride past the sentries and get closer to the enemy camp. Then they test Zynara's rod to see if it will take everyone and their mounts into the paradise realm. It does and the group returns to the real world.

As night begins to fall, the Seekers move out. The scouts move among the command tents taking out sentries as they go. Bernice sprinkles oil on several tents, cuts the ropes supporting the tents and then sets them on fire. In a different tent, Bernice finds a chest much like the one Finrod found earlier and takes it. Finrod targets the leaders' tent with a Fireball. The tent erupts in flames and several explosions follow. With the camp in chaos, the remaining Seekers ride into camp. Lord Vanarkus impales a Hextorite with his lance. Stephanie and Blod take out more of the vile priests and their followers. Dar and Finrod move to destroy the siege machines. Hill giants emerge from a large tent and Lord Vanarkus attacks with his lance once more. Stephanie shatters Lightning while fighting a Hextorite warrior. She picks up a sword from a fallen foe and continues to fight. Having caused enough damage, the Seekers withdraw. However, not everyone reaches the meeting area. With the enemy getting closer, the Seekers are forced to withdraw to the paradise realm. Those inside the realm can't help but wonder what happened to their companions. (TF#53-59)

Roster of the Seekers: Validar (PL), Arocken, Bernice, Blod, Claudius, Stephanie, and Zynara.

GM Notes: Only those players currently active at this time made to the rendezvous point safely. Given what tended to happen to those who just faded from the game, the players had every right to be worried.

July 12th –

(The Frontier) The Seekers rest in the paradise realm. Much to their surprise, their wounds heal much faster in this place. They examine the spoils looted from the attack. (TF#59-60)

July 13th –

(The Frontier) The Seekers continue to rest in the pocket dimension and plan their next move. Blod puts on a pair of cursed gauntlets. (TF#60)

July 14th –

(The Frontier) The Seekers return from the paradise realm and find the Hextorites waiting for them. Much to their shock, the priest that Validar lanced and his warrior body guard, Stephanie took his sword to replace her own, are both alive! Backing up the enemy are many goblins and a few giants. Battle ensues and Finrod returns casting spells on the enemy from the trees above. The goblins are quickly dealt with, as are the giants. With their support gone, the enemy leaders go down. The Seekers then mount up and move to a new location. They plan to continue to attack so that the enemy won't have time to recover. Starkin joins the Seekers, he was part of a different adventuring band who engaged the enemy army. He is unsure of their fate. Reaching the main enemy camp, the Seekers move in with the intent of destroying the mind-numbing potions and causing more chaos. As the Seekers attack, the gates of Gateway are opened and riders come forth to aid in the battle! The enemy is overrun and victory is had! Cereld, Araduin and Dar appear among the new arrivals. Cereld explains that when the time to retreat came, they couldn't reach the rendezvous area so instead made for Gateway. Based on the papers that Cereld had taken from Mesilva, a cure for the mind-numbing potion was created and then used on those in Gateway. Selinda of Azrella removes Blod's cursed gauntlets. Wearily, the Seekers finally return to a grateful Gateway at dusk. (TF#61-66)

Roster of the Seekers: Validar (PL), Arocken, Bernice, Blod, Claudius, Finrod, Starkin, Stephanie, and Zynara.

July 15th –

(The Frontier) The Seekers rest and clean up from their battle efforts. Cereld tells the Seekers that he, Araduin, Dar Thaltus and a squad of soldiers are making the journey back to Mesilva to rescue Jason and those left behind as he had promised. Other adventuring bands set out to hunt down the escaping enemy army. Finrod hires more servants for the manor. Stephanie finds a fancy dress in her room after bathing. A servant girl helps her put it on and she wears it for the group dinner that night. That night, after supper, Finrod purposes to Stephanie. She accepts. Bernice volunteers to be the Maid of Honor. General Logan visits the Seekers Mansion and announces the Crown's rewards for their efforts against the Hextorites. A feast is planned to be held in several days. Arocken has some new gear made for him. The mages learn new spells and focus on other pursuits. (TF#66)

GM Notes: Cereld's promise to those back in Mesilva was an easy way to move him and the other faded players out of the game, but keep them for later use. Another large chunk of downtime follows so things are spaced out over many days.

August 7th –

(Cynalon Knights, New Frontiers) Those being escorted by Araduin and Dar Thaltus are attacked by Hextorite forces returning from Gateway. They are captured and given the mind-numbing potion so that they can be controlled easier. They are taken to the main Hextor Temple in New Keln. (CK#4, NF#104)

August 8th –

(The Frontier) Blod and Zynara are married by Selinda of Azrella. They depart on their honeymoon for several days. (TF#68)

August 10th –

(The Frontier) The dwarven warrior Thengor Bayar joins the Seekers. (TF#68)

Roster of the Seekers: Validar (PL), Arocken, Bernice, Blod, Claudius, Finrod, Omni Tuens, Starkin, Stephanie, Thengor Bayar and Zynara.

August 13th –

(New Frontiers) Cereld, Jason and Andara reach Whispering Hollow but continue on past it to where the Seekers battled Wendy and the Mountain Monster. They find that the graves of the fallen Seekers have been exhumed. (NF#104)

GM Notes: Given how Validar has seemingly returned from the dead, Cereld wondered if the others had as well. He had an attraction to Dalliance and had to find out if where she was buried had been disturbed. While never mentioned specifically in the games, Wendy's dad was the Zombie Master who would turn up in the Sword of Doom game. That I knew back in these days. It wasn't until later that the connection they have to the DeVilles was established. The Zombie Master is the son of Thelma Deville, so he, and his daughter Wendy are both tieflings. Wendy just didn't have any outward signs of her demonic heritage.

August 14th –

(The Frontier) Arocken's new gear is completed. (TF#69)

August 15th –

(New Frontiers) Returning to Whispering Hollow, Cereld discovers that Hextorites and goblins have returned to their temple and are threatening the locals. Outnumbered, Cereld begins to use hit and run tactics against the Hextorites with the assistance of Jason and Andara. (NF#104)

August 22nd –

(The Frontier) Late in the evening the Seekers are alerted that one of boys who help out in the kitchen was out getting water from the local well with another boy when he was pulled into the well. The Seekers quickly reach the well and scouts are sent down it. They find that there is a small lake of water underneath the city and that numerous tunnels lead off from it. Empty potion bottles are found, this was where the city was affected by the Hextorites mind numbing potion. Tracks lead seemingly everywhere and no one path seems better than the others. Thundron Bloodshoulder pitches in and later joins the Seekers. The heroes split up to search for the missing boy. Several find that a man-made wall had been breached. Kelnish writing is found nearby saying, “Disturb ye not, the Gatherer of Souls.” Elsewhere in the caverns the dead bodies of goblins are found. Most likely they dated back to the Siege of Gateway. Finrod and Stephanie come across Mercy, a half-drow Priest of Mortidus who joins them. Other Seekers come across a strange formation of pillars. The pillars suddenly become filled with magical energy and a young boy appears from seemingly nowhere. The boy is actually a powerful invoker by the name of Padraig. In spite of his youthful appearance, Padraig is much older than he looks. The many tunnels lead to an area where the Seekers find the missing boy. He is laying on a stone altar seemingly unconscious. Behind him a dark armored figure stands his hands stretched out and in contact with two glowing pillars. The armored figure nearly disintegrates Finrod with strange beams coming from his eyes. The armored figure quickly falls to the Seekers blades and the boy is rescued. Vonte of Ehlonna appears too. A mist covers over the Gatherer and it reappears in a sarcophagus. Finrod accidentally activates it again and again it goes down under the Seekers' attacks. The armor does not seem to reform, so the Seekers go home and intend to report the incident to City Council next morning. (TF#68-76)

Roster of the Seekers: Validar (PL), Arocken, Bernice, Blod, Claudius, Finrod, Mercy, Omni Tuens, Padraig, Starkin, Stephanie, Thengor Bayar, Thundron Bloodshoulder, Vonte and Zynara.

August 23th –

(The Frontier) Next morning, Lord Vanarkus, Omni Tuens, and Padraig visit the Gateway Council about the strange Gatherer of Souls. Lord Vanarkus relays what transpired, while Padraig speaks to Lord Sharadin. The two mages come to the opinion that Padraig is not from this world. Lord Sharadin theorizes that the Gatherer is a construct of some type, while Selinda of Azrella notes that it only acted to defend itself. Durn of Heironeous thinks it to be a Hextorite trick and it should be destroyed. It is decided that Lord Sharadin and Selinda of Azrella go and inspect the Gatherer in person tomorrow morning. That evening Padraig spends time with Lord Sharadin and his family. (TF#77)

August 24th –

(The Frontier) Lord Sharadin and Selinda of Azrella journey down into the tunnels underneath Gateway and inspect the Gatherer of Souls. They also explore all the tunnels and find that one does eventually lead to the outside. Its the same cavern that Raeden camped in months ago. The goblins broke the wall down during their mission to put the mind-numbing poison into the water. Omni and Arocken visit the taverns and participate in open bard night. Vonte wonders why there is a war against the Hextorites. Lord Vanarkus gets a letter from home. (TF#78)

August 25th –

(The Frontier) Council makes their choice about the Gatherer of Souls. The tunnels around the Gatherer are to be sealed and magical alarms placed. The outside entrance is to be sealed off again. Lord Sharadin handles most of the work. The Seekers discuss what to do next, now that the summer is starting to wind down. The sacrifice that the Hextorites plan to do has been thwarted for now. With the location of New Keln now known, the forces of Cynalon will march on it next spring. In the meantime, the Seekers decide to return to the ruins of Mesilva to find out what happened to Cereld, Dar, and Araduin as they have yet to return. They also plan to explore past the stone doors found in the back of the dragon lair. The great mule debate occurs. (TF#79-80)

GM Notes: And that brings us to the end of August. September is a rather busy month as several other games start up. The timeline is about to get crowded.
