Tracking Down Dobah (Episode 9)

Post by GM Fang »

Having learned of the hideout of their quarry: the crime boss Bandin Dobah, the crew set off to bring him to justice. In a rented Landspeeder, the quintet close in on the coordinates of Dobah's hideout in the caves near Beggar's Canyon. As the Sullustan pilot Proiah Pron maneuvered the vehicle through the twisty canyons, suddenly they were beset by fire from above.

A number of solid projectiles bounced off the hood and fairing of the landspeeder, but none did any serious damage other than some dents. Pron did his best to make evasive moves, but was limited by the caverns themselves. Fortunately he was able to outrun the Sand People ambush without any damage to the speeder and no wounds to the team.

Before long the cavern opened up to a wider plain to the left. Keeping close to the cavern walls, the speeder advanced cautiously. Then a figure was spotted by Spanner. It was some form of sentry droid. Pron slowed the speeder as the droid came closer. Tense seconds passed. After about a minute, suddenly the droid rushed forward and opened fire. The cannon that it possessed was clearly meant for vehicle combat and an accurate shot caught the speeder squarely in the engine compartment, causing the speeder to nose-dive and crash into the sandy desert.

The sentry droid was quickly dispatched by fire from FL-AR3 and Killian. However, now they wondered if they no longer had the advantage of surprise. Making their way to the canyon across the open flats, the group found a couple of cave openings and proceeded to explore.

It took some time wandering the cavernous passageways to finally come across something tangible. And there it was: a ship! The cavern the ship rests in is a flat expanse of exposed rock. The pressure curtain generator is tucked into one side of the cavern, and there is an arc light array on either side. Simple chairs and tables were set up nearby. A pair of binary load lifter droids stomp back and forth, picking up some simple cargo and supplies, and shuffling it around. There are also three cargo pods, each with two containers.

The group starts to make their way into the cavern as stealthfully as possible. Pron leads the way, followed by Kilian and Spanner. While Garet hides behind the cargo pods, the droid FL-AR3 stands guard initially. On approach, Kilian notices that while the cockpit appears to be at the top and fore of the ship, there are no windows into the cockpit. FL-AR3 will note in response that the YV-666 configuration had a virtual cockpit view of the area outside, which better protected the pilot and co-pilot. Once more, they did not know if they were being watched, but no active response to their presence had resulted as yet.

Entering the ship through the lower level cargo doors, Pron was first to see inside. The cargo bay is piled high with boxes and crates and strewn with all manner of detritus. Most of these are empty or filled with plastic packing and shredded paper. An elevator provides access to shelves near the roof of the bay, though the boxes stored here are all empty.

He makes his way to a forward bay with a closed entry ramp. This seems to be used as a machine shop. This area of the craft also appears to serve as the armory. Moving up the ladder to the next level, the is simply a ladder well with doors going fore and aft. Cautiously the trio works their way up single file.

Reaching the third level, a corridor heads in both directions to the front and rear and the ladder reaches still further up to the lounge and cockpit area. Pron reaches the top and the thugs there notice him quickly. "Hey, what's that guy doing here?"

Proiah tries to play it off as though he is doing an inspection, but their remote location does him no favors. One of the thugs approaches and shoves the Sullustan against the wall. Following up, Kilian moves up the ladder and tosses a Stun grenade, from Spanner, catching one of the crew in its effect and disorienting them. And so by mutual consent, the battle began.

The first mate in the cockpit fired and closed the door to the ship's controls. Pron took out one of the thugs. Kilian became embroiled in a game of cat and mouse as the Nikto in the cockpit kept trying to use his surroundings for cover. Kilian suffered a serious wound. Meanwhile, FL-AR3 began making his own way up the ship's interior. Eventually, the Nikto was defeated and the team had secured the bridge.

Just then, FL-AR3 took a shot to the back of his head. An Aqualish had ambushed him. Was this Bandin Dobah?

The droid engaged in a battle with the Aqualish, hitting him squarely and the large-toothed, black-eyed scoundrel made an unsteady break for it. Kilian came down the ladder and managed to put a final shot into the enemy, stunning him unconscious. The team had captured Bandin Dobah. Or had they?

As the team was making plans to secure the ship, a Rodian came down a corridor. Seeing the Aqualish unconscious and being secured, the Rodian held up his hands and turned away. "This is not worth it," the Rodian muttered and disappeared as quickly as he had appeared.

Taking stock of the ship, they found that it contained seven containers of glitterstim. It took some time to find the seventh as it was secured in a hidden compartment. Those were all quickly unloaded into the cavern.

Basic but functional kitchen facilities are positioned to one side, with a rather unhygienic-looking shower and lavatory to the other. A vending machine in the galley produces fairly decent cups of hot caf. The cabins are small and spare, consisting of a bunk, chest, and dresser. The escape pods provide enough room for four people to sit in relative comfort. Near the rear of the top level, the tools and devices needed to service the ship's various engines and systems are neatly stored here. A ladder from the engineering section allows a gunner access to the ship's laser cannon turret.

The ship is found to be under the ownership of Erdric Garallia. The crew that were captured have no idea who this is and claim to have never heard the name before. Contacting Tara Nightshade, the crew confirm that they have captured the nefarious crime boss. They explain the situation with the ship and the glitterstim they found. Tara confirms bringing Dobah to her and asks if they want to run the glitterstim to Nar Shaada or some shadowport, but the team declines.

Discussing the now-captured ship, Tara recommends against flying it to Mos Espa as the authorities will impound it. That would leave no opportunity for claiming it for themselves, which everyone seemed excited to do. Asking her about the process to change a title and a transponder setting, the team offered her the coordinates of the glitterstim for a contact who could do the requested work on the captured ship.

Tara told them to fly the ship to Mos Shuuta as Teemo had better control over the Imperials there and his people could get them landed without complications. She provided the name of a contact that could deal with the ship in the manner they needed in exchange for their current coordinates. Tara would make a quick substantial profit as a finder's fee, selling that information to another smuggler.

That just left them with the problem of what to do about the damaged landspeeder. And a quick flight to Mos Shuuta. And then....
