Waylaid in the Wilderness (Episode 23)

Post by GM Fang »

Needing to locate the datacard to presumably exonerate Lt. See Bonuda, the team had to waylay the transport caravan. The best opportunity to steal anything from the convoy was to attack it as it traveled through the Rodian swamplands. A land speeder was rented and the team split up with Roona, Zavi and Irdis on the speeder and Ymira and Xander on the Archelon, with R5 assisting.

The convoy was composed of three types of vehicles. Large personnel and cargo carriers, armored but lightly armed, used for transporting non-prisoners or evidence. Medium-sized prisoner transport speeder, used to transport convicts. Smaller escort swoop bikes, used for scouting and pathfinding.

The swoop bikes were the first to be encountered. The vanguard was far ahead of the rest of the convoy and the team attacked. One swoop bike was blasted from the sky and the other ran off to alert the convoy. Xander worked to scramble and jam the communications network, causing confusion among the convoy. Zavi meanwhile shot down another swoop bike from the sky.

An ion grenade brought the repulsor system of the first APC to a halt. Meanwhile, the bikes were being whittled down and eventually the remaining few flew off. The Archelon engaged the second APC with its firepower and started pounding the heavy armor, causing damage. Another ion grenade brought the other APC to a halt as well. As the convoy started to pile up on itself, a new player entered the game.

This was a group of heavy speeders with heavy weapons mounted on the back. They hit the transport speeder and it crashed into the back of one of the halted APCs. Roona had radioed to the rest of the crew that she had contacted the Sarlacc Syndicate when they learned that a prominent gang leader was on that prisoner transport. The SS fortunately brought some heavy firepower of their own.

With the first APC halted, the second APC came up heavy fire from the Archelon and the guards surrendered before being destroyed. The third APC had also taken several smaller damaging shots from the Syndicate speeders. Satisfied with the rescue of their members and gang leader, the Syndicate split off, but not without the possibility of future business between them and the Archelon crew. There was still the matter of getting 40 blaster rifles to Arda II.

With the civilian guards of the convoy sufficiently cowed, the team went to work finding the datacard in question. Unlike the PSF these guards were much more susceptible to threats and considerable damage had been done to their vehicles. The guards were happy to be escaping with their lives intact and Irdis was quick to emphasize that fact. Xander accessed the computer system of the second APC which is the one that housed the digital material evidence.

Finding a case that housed the datacard needed, Irdis decided to confiscate all of the material evidence files. When Roona pointed out that this might allow certain criminals to go free without the evidence, Irdis smiled a toothy grin and packed up the case. Quickly making their way out of the conflict zone, the team boarded the Archelon and set off for Karsteeku once more. Zavi did some repairs on the landspeeder that had taken minimal damage during the battle. The Archelon's heavy armor was only scored and not even scratched by the light weaponry that the APC's had possessed.

Working out of Tora Nunn's apartment, the group took the time now to review that information. Ymira in particular pointed out that since Lt. Bonuda was specific about not opening it, that it must have something they should see. While he implied that their actions might corrupt the file, Xander was confident he could access even the encoded files without danger.

After a few moments of slicing into the encoded datacard, Xander activated a holo record. Everyone crowded around to watch.

The holorecording flickers to life, showing the view of a darkened office. In one corner of the room, a messy pile of clothes sits at the foot of a couch, turned makeshift cot.

The glow of a nearby computer terminal shines across the face of the form on the bed – it is the recently murdered scientist. You can see the Rodian woman tossing and turning in her sleep, a data cylinder clasped tightly in her left hand.

Suddenly, a sliver of light extends through the bottom of the recording, and then it disappears just as quickly. Another Rodian enters the view of the recording, a larger figure than the woman, wearing the sharply cut grey and green of the Rodian PSF.

The new figure moves quickly to the desk and computer terminal, hurriedly searches through the computer’s files.

As the light of the monitor dances across the room, however, you can see the Rodian woman slowly wake up and look at the source of the activity, and then her eyes go wide. She sits up straight and says something, and the Rodian at the computer squares off to her and draws a small holdout blaster.

The woman backs up further into the couch and offers her hand forward, the data cylinder extended. The Rodian with the gun looks at it, considering, and then with a swift motion, grabs the cylinder and shoots the woman twice in the chest.

The holorecording ends as the assailant walks out of the room, and as he turns, you can clearly see his face – the face of Lt. Bonuda.
